Canaan Ponce, Kelsey Ricci nab 10K wins at Grace Wins

Grace Wins Road RaceHahira, Georgia's Grace Wins races were in April in 2022, in September in 2023, and in November in 2024. But if holding one race per calendar year counts as an annual event, then the third annual Grace Wins was on Saturday morning, 16 November 2024, and Canaan Ponce won the 10K by 800 meters, running 37:21. Hahira's own Kelsey Ricci was the first woman in the 10K, placing tenth overall in 56:46.


Just eight days before the Grace Wins race, Canaan Ponce had turned a 29:02 8K at the Southern States Athletic Conference Cross-Country Championships in Oakville, Alabama while racing for Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. Behind Ponce, Alexander Ayala of Adel, Georgia took second in 40:45. Another Adel athlete, Gabriel Ponce, was third in 42:10. Jim O'Connor of Hahira was the first master runner in the race, coming in fourth overall in 44:29.


Carson Oliver took second in the women's standing, placing eleventh overall in 57:08. Jamie Brown of Valdosta was the first woman master and third female finisher, twelfth overall in 57:13.


33 athletes finished the 2024 Grace Wins 10K.

In 2022, the first year of the Grace Wins races, the sole event was the 5K. The 10K was added in 2023 but the 5K persisted and in 2024, Jayden Hauser of Adel won the shorter race. A frosh harrier on the Cook County High team, Hauser posted a 19:32 winning time in the 5K. Carlos Garcia, an eighth-grader and the ace of the Cook Middle School cross-country team, finished runner-up to Hauser in 21:16. Jim Carter of Sparks, Georgia came in third in 27:10.


Hahira's Austin McDonald was the top woman in the 5K, and fifth overall in 27:48.Another Hahira athlete, Jenny Cornett, was the second woman and eighth overall in 27:57. At 28:40, Sofia Guevara was the third woman and ninth overall.


51-year-old Spencer Corbett was the first master runner in the 5K, the ninth male and twelfth overall in 30:28. Jennifer Wood of Lake Park, Georgia was the first woman master, the fifth female finisher and fourteenth overall in 30:56.


36 athletes finished the 2024 Grace Wins 5K.

Wins by Canaan Ponce and Jenna Stilwell had Hahira buzzing

Hahira Honeybee FestivalSaturday, 7 October 2023, was an open weekend for the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College men's cross-country team, leaving frosh harrier Canaan Ponce free to race Hahira, Georgia's annual Honey Bee 5K. Ponce made the most of the opportunity, winning the 3.1-miler in 17:50. Hahira's Jenna Stilwell was the first woman in the race, placing twelfth overall in 21:54.


Two high school harriers taking a break from the cross-country season battled for second. Highland Christian senior Ty Milligan narrowly beat Caden McDaniel, a Cook County junior, to the finish line, 18:28 to 18:29. Carson Bassett of Hahira was the first master runner in the race, placing ninth overall in 21:24.


Another Hahira master runner, Anne Milligan, was second in the women's standings, finishing twentieth overall in 23:51. At 23:54, a few steps behind Milligan, Kendall Folsom of Valdosta was third in the women's standings and 21st overall.


166 athletes finished the 2023 Honeybee 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia timed the race and provided finish line services.

Ryan Kelly and Traci Ferris put the sting on the competition at the Honey Bee 5K

Hahira Honeybee FestivalHoney bees aren't native to the Americas. You could even call them an invasive species, especially if they're nesting in the chimney or the attic of your house. But during the five centuries that honey bees have been in the New World, they've become an important part of the economy. At one time, this was especially true in Hahira, Georgia, which as a town was a major supplier of queen bees. That heritage is celebrated in Hahira's annual Honey Bee Festival, especially the Honey Bee 5K. On Saturday morning, 5 October 2019, Lake Park, Georgia master runner Ryan Kelly won the latest edition of the Honey Bee 5K, running 18:42. Traci Ferris of Valdosta, Georgia was the first woman in the race, placing eighth overall in 22:54.


It was the fourth Honey Bee win for Kelly; the Valdosta High cross-country coach had also won the race in 2012, 2013, and 2015. Hahira's own Colin Prinsloo finished runner-up to Kelly in 19:54. Ruben Pule of Valdosta took third in 20:40. Cason Register, an athlete on the Lanier County High cross-country team, edged Chad Northcutt of Quitman for fourth, 21:04 to 21:05.


Unlike Kelly, Traci Ferris hadn't won the Honey Bee 5K before, but she had posted a win in another Hahira race just seven days earlier, taking the women's title at the ninth annual Get-A-Mammy 5K. Amber Cardoza of Midland, Georgia placed second in the women's standings and tenth overall in 24:27. Hahira's Sarah Gatzemeier squeaked into third just ahead of Jamie Brown of Valdosta, 24:40 to 24:43. Gatzemeier and Brown were eleventh and twelfth overall. Leesburg, Georgia athlete Beth Cowles was the top woman master and nineteenth female finisher, 41st overall in 28:59.


152 athletes finished the 2019 Honeybee 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia timed the race and provided finish line services.

Ben Barwick and Traci Ferris hustle through Hahira at the Get-A-Mammy 5K

Regular mammograms are vital for the early detection of breast cancer. The mission of the non-profit Get-A-Mammy, Inc., is to make sure that all women have the wherewithal to get mammograms. To this end, in 2011 Get-A-Mammy started holding an annual fundraising road race, the Get-A-Mammy 5K.


Ben Barwick won the ninth annual Get-A-Mammy 5K in Hahira, Georgia on Saturday morning, 28 September 2019. A second-year engineering student at Valdosta State University, Barwick ran the 3.1-mile race in 17:38, finishing nearly 100 meters ahead of the next runner. Traci Ferris of Valdosta, Georgia was the first woman in the race, placing sixth overall in 22:49.


Another Valdosta State undergrad, first-year student Rio Espinoza, took second behind Barwick in 17:38. Caleb Watson, a Valdosta State senior, was third in 18:15.


Women's champ Traci Ferris had run the Get-A-Mammy 5K two years earlier, finishing ninth in the women's standings in the 2017 race. At her return in 2019, though, she ran more than two minutes faster than she had in that first appearance. Valdosta State frosh MacKenzie Sullivan was the women's runner-up in the 2019 race, coming in seventh overall in 23:41. The 2018 women's champ, Darby Jones of Hahira, was the third woman and ninth overall in 25:19.


Tifton, Georgia athlete David Pollock was the fastest master runner in the 5K, placing tenth overall and seventh in the men's standings at 25:28. Valdosta's Mary Scott Lincoln was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, eleventh overall in 25:33. Lincoln had been the second in the women's division in the 2018 Get-A-Mammy.


71 athletes finished the 2019 Get-A-Mammy 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.

Isaac Chambers and Timmy Evans take it to the homestretch at the Valiant 5K

Valiant 5KIn 2018, Valwood School's fourth annual cross-country race was called the Homestretch 5K. When the Hahira, Georgia school hosted the fifth annual race on 11 May 2019, the name had changed to the Valiant 5K. The actual competition that Saturday morning came down to a homestretch struggle between Isaac Chambers and Timmy Evans, but Chambers proved the more valiant of the two--or at least the faster. The Hahira Middle School eighth-grader outkicked Evans for the win, 20:01 to 20:02. The women's competition wasn't nearly as close, with Pinetta, Florida master runner Tracey Cole winning by more than 250 meters, placing fifth overall in 24:15.


Matthew Herndon, a frosh-year distance runner on the Valwood track team, took third in 21:26. Jim O'Connor of Hahira was the first master runner in the race, placing fourth overall in 24:00.


Jordan Green, a sophomore on the Valwood cross-country team, took second in the women's standings and tenth overall in 25:34. Two more of Valwood's sophomore harriers, Brenna Clark and Jolie Green, were the third and fourth female finishers, placing twelfth and thirteenth overall. Clark ran 25:46 with Green close behind in 25:51.


95 athletes finished the 2019 Valiant 5K and another 46 completed a one-mile fun run. A Course/Line, LLC of Valdosta, Georgia timed the races and provided finish line services.

In 2018 the race was called the Homestretch 5K.

Alec Munger and Kelly Lunceford take care of beeswax in Hahira

Hahira Honeybee FestivalIn 2017 a Berrien County High cross-country runner, Morgan Bolmer, won the Hahira, Georgia Honeybee 5K. In 2018 a Lowndes High harrier took a turn. LHS sophomore Alec Munger won the 3.1-mile race on Saturday morning, 6 October 2018, running 17:29. Kelly Lunceford of Valdosta, Georgia was the first woman in the race, placing fifteenth overall in 20:51.


Sometimes success comes through specialization. Jefferson County, Florida didn't build an agricultural empire by growing watermelon, but by producing watermelon seeds. Likewise, Gadsden County, Florida achieved greatness not by simply producing tobacco, but by growing shade tobacco, a variety specifically used for the outer wrapper of cigars. Hahira, Georgia didn't just produce honey or honey bees, the Lowndes County village made its mark through raising queen bees.


As well as these endeavors served their communities, the industries are all gone now. But Monticello, Florida still has an annual Melon Run 5K as a reminder of the great days of watermelon seed production. Hahira still has a Honeybee 5K. Quincy, Florida, however, doesn't even have a Tobacco Trot or a Stogie Run.


Munger's 17:29 wasn't a Honeybee 5K record, but it was the fastest time at the race since 2010, when Scott Gardner won the race in 16:46. Ryan Kelly, a three-time winner of the Honeybee 5K and the cross-country coach at Valdosta High, took second in the race, running 18:08. Gene Davis of Hahira placed third in 18:20. Valdosta's Rick Mazurkiewicz was the fastest master runner in the Honeybee 5K, coming in eleventh overall in 20:25.


Daun Carauna, a junior on the Lowndes High cross-country team, was second in the women's standings and 38th overall in 23:11. Martha Mazurkiewicz of Valdosta was the first woman master and third female finisher, 43rd overall in 23:23.


220 athletes finished the 2018 Honeybee 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia timed the race and provided finish line services.

Parker Childree wins the eighth annual Get-A-Mammy 5K

In Hahira, Georgia on Saturday morning, 29 September 2018, Valdosta athlete Parker Childree won the eighth annual Get-A-Mammy 5K Road Race, running 19:31 and finishing more than 300 meters ahead of the next runner. Hahira's own Darby Jones was the first woman in the race, placing ninth overall in 25:17.


Kerry Underwood of Ty Ty, Georgia was the fastest master runner in the race, placing second overall in 21:00. Valdosta, Georgia high school student Drew Francis placed third overall in 22:04.


Mary Scott Lincoln of Valdosta was second in the women's standings, finishing twelfth overall in 25:43. Jennifer Denham was the first woman master, edging Heather Patrick for third in the women's standings, 26:44 to 26:46. Denham and Patrick are both from Valdosta; they placed fifteenth and sixteenth overall.


101 athletes finished the 2018 Get-A-Mammy 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.

Berrien County's Bolmer and Chandler each taste sweet victory at the Honeybee 5K

Hahira Honeybee FestivalA pair of Berrien County High sophomore cross-country runners were prominent on the streets of Hahira, Georgia on Saturday morning, 7 October 2017. Morgan Bolmer took first in the Honeybee 5K, part of Hahira's annual Honeybee Festival, running 18:58. Rebecca Chandler was the first woman and second overall in 20:43.


It's October. Don't you guys have a cross-country meet somewhere?


Eric Little of Maitland, Florida was the fastest master runner in the race and the second male finisher, placing third overall in 20:46. A flurry of school-age athletes were next over the line--Highland Christian's Jonathan Daniely (4th, 21:40), Lowndes High sophomore Jackson Lawson (5th, 21:42), Highlands Christian senior Alden Lisse (6th, 21:43), and Hahira Middle School eighth-grader Ryan Carter (7th, 21:45). For a few moments, it looked like the finish chute of a cross-country meet.


In addition to sixth overall, Lisse was also runner-up in the women's standings. Pollyanna Bass of Pavo, Georgia was the top woman master and third female finisher, eleventh overall in 22:43.


129 athletes finished the 2017 Honeybee 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia timed the race and provided finish line services.

Butzin repeats and Spry wins at Hahira's Get-A-Mammy 5K

Finishing just over a minute ahead of the next runner, Valdosta, Georgia's Dan Butzin ran a winning 20:08 in the seventh annual Get-A-Mammy 5K on Saturday morning, 30 September 2017. It was the second victory in a row at the Hahira, Georgia road race for Butzin. Vanessa Spry of Valdosta took the women's title, placing fifth overall in 22:25. 138 athletes finished the race.


Johathan Daniely, a Highland Christian Academy cross-country runner, was second in 21:08. A few steps behind Daniely, Thom Bateman of Winnetka, Illinois finished third in 21:11, the fastest master runner in the race.


Another Highland Christian cross-country runner, Alden Lisse was second in the women's standings and eighth overall in 22:45. Just seven days earlier, Lisse had won the women's division in the Above The Rim 5K. Pollyanna Bass of Pavo, Georgia was the top woman master and third female finisher, tenth overall in 23:09. Gabriell Mann, a frosh on the Citizen's Christian Academy cross-country team, was the fourth woman and fourteenth overall in 24:36


Proceeds of the annual event benefit Get-A-Mammy, Inc., a non-profit that provides funds for mammograms, reconstructive surgery, and cancer research. The organization also works to increase awareness of the importance of regular mammograms in the early detection of breast cancer, urging all women to "get a mammy." A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia provided timing and finish line services for the seventh annual Get-A-Mammy 5K.

Watson and Price gallop to victory at the Julep Jog

Julep Jog 5KThe past and the future of Coffee High cross-country were on display in Hahira, Georgia at the third annual Julep Jog 5K on Saturday morning, 6 May 2017. Representing the past was Coffee alumnus Caleb Watson, now on the cross-country team at Armstong State University. Representing the future was Coffee Middle School eighth-grader Cameron Watson, who will be a frosh at Coffee High this fall. The future prevailed over the past, as Cameron Watson won the Julep Jog, running 18:23 on the five-kilometer cross-country course on the Valwood School campus. The past didn't do so badly, though; Caleb Watson was second in 18:45.


Deshon Taylor, a junior on the Valdosta High cross-country squad, was third in 18:46. David Burnett of Valdosta, Georgia was the fastest master runner in the race, placing fourth overall in 20:38.


Cameron Watson's 18:23 was a new Julep Jog record, eclipsing the mark of 18:49 set by Ryan Kelly in the 2016 race. In the women's competition Valdosta's Anne Price also set a new record, winning the women's title in 22:07 and placing fifth overall. The previous best for a woman at the Julep Jog was the 22:44 posted by Amy Sharon in 2016.


Abby Arnett, a frosh on the Coffee High girls' cross-country team, was second in the women's standings and eighth overall in 22:34. Coffee Middle eighth-grader Gracie Woods was the third female and ninth overall in 24:07. Valwood eighth-graders Brenna Clark and Madeline Castor took the next two spots on the women's side, finishing tenth overall in 25:09 and eleventh overall in 25:27. Castor had been the Julep Jog women's champ in 2015. Kelly Yates of Valdosta was the first woman master and seventh female finisher, sixteenth overall in 26:11.


43 athletes finished the 2017 Julep Jog 5K Cross-Country Race. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.

In Hahira, Butzin and Davis lead the race to Get-A-Mammy

Dan Butzin bested a field of 101 athletes on Saturday morning, 24 September 2016, running 19:03 to win the sixth annual Get-A-Mammy 5K. The 3.1-mile road race was run from Bethany Baptist Church in Hahira, Georgia.


Butzin is a Valdosta, Georgia, athlete, as were the next three finishers. Rob McGhin was second in 20:54, and Jim Simoneau was third in 22:30. Heath Martin, an alumnus of the Valwood School cross country team, ran 22:49 for fourth.


Kelly Davis of Valdosta took the women's title, placing fourth overall in 22:53. Another Valdosta runner, Lauren Bewley, was runner-up on the women's side and seventh overall in 24:18.


Valdosta's Jim Dawkins was the fastest master runner in the race and fifth overall in 24:00. Gina Purvis of Tifton, Georgia was the first woman master and third female finisher, eighth overall in 24:35.

Kelly and Sharon beat the odds at the Julep Jog

Julep Jog 5KEach spring, Louisville, Kentucky marks the first Saturday in May with a sporting event that the locals must regard highly, because they've been holding it annually since 1875. There's also an event in Hahira, Georgia each year on the first Saturday in May, although that tradition started 140 years later than the one in Kentucky. Hahira's race is the Julep Jog 5K, and the second annual iteration of that race took place on Saturday morning, 7 May 2016.


The 3.1-mile race was contested at Valwood School on a two-loop cross-country course around the campus. Lake Park, Georgia athlete Ryan Kelly won by almost 160 meters, running 18:49. Dan Butzin of Valdosta, Georgia took second in 19:26. The 2015 Julep Jog runner-up, Valdosta's David Burnett, placed third in 19:45. Matthew White of Valdosta was the fastest master runner in the race, coming in fourth overall in 20:37.


Valdosta master runner Amy Sharon took the women's title, finishing sixth overall in 22:44. Debbie Green, another Valdosta master runner, was the second in the women's standings and eighth overall in 23:51. Master runner Kelly Yates, also from Valdosta, was the third woman and tenth overall in 24:32.


The 2016 Julep Jog was part of Valwood School's 44th annual Derby Day. 51 athletes finished the 5K, while another 47 completed a one-mile fun run. A Course/Line, LLC, provided timing and finish line services for the races.

A honey of a run in Hahira for Kelly and Lancaster

Hahira Honeybee Festival2014 Honeybee 5K champion Nick Rosatti was on the Hahira, Georgia, starting line of the 3 October 2015 edition of that annual race. But Ryan Kelly of Lake Park, Georgia, was also there that Saturday morning, and Kelly had won the race in 2012 and 2013. And when the 2015 race was over, Kelly had a third Honeybee 5K title.


Kelly, a cross country coach at Valdosta High, ran 18:16 to win the 3.1-mile race through the streets of Hahira. Valdosta athlete David Burnett finished runner-up, not far behind Kelly in 18:25. Defending champ Rosatti fought off Pine Grove Middle School eighth-grader Carson Locke for third, 19:13 to 19:14. Lorenzo Gomez of Omega, Georgia, was the fastest master runner in the race, placing fifth overall in 20:28.


In a battle of cross country runners from rival schools, Valdosta Middle School eighth-grader Katie Lancaster outkicked Pine Grove Middle School seventh-grader Jessica Locke, 22:44 to 22:45, for first place in the female standings. Lancaster and Locke were 15th and 16th overall. Not far behind them there was another close race, with Debbie Green edging Amrie Lisse for the third women's spot, 22:52 to 22:53. Green, a Valdosta runner, was the first woman master in the race, placing 17th overall. Lisse, also a Valdosta athlete, was 18th overall.


There were 196 recorded finishers in the race, part of Hahira's annual Honeybee Festival.
