Ryan Kelly and Ruth Holiday win more at "Run More, One Less"

November road-racing in Valdosta, Georgia opened on Saturday morning, 7 November 2020 with the second annual "Run More, One Less" 5K. Master runner Ryan Kelly won the 3.1-mile event by 300 meters with a 19:14, and Ruth Holiday was the first woman in the race, placing eleventh overall in 28:25.


Aiden Keen of Valdosta took the runner-up spot in 20:28. A ninth-grader at Highland Christian, Keen runs for his school's cross-country team. Samuel Newhart of Melrose, Florida ran 21:12 for third.


Thirteen-year-old Suanna Morris of Ray City, Georgia came in second in the women's standings with a 28:50, good for twelfth overall. Another Ray City athlete, Lauren Thomas, was the third woman and fourteenth overall in 29:11. Beth Ford of Valdosta was the first woman master and fifth female finisher, seventeenth overall in 30:58.


73 athletes finished Covenant Baptist Church's 2020 "Run More, One Less" 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.

Whole hog in Adel--Ryan Kelly and Kylie Downs win the Hog Jog 5K

By late October Georgia's 2020 high school cross-country season was nearly over. The State Championship was coming up on 6 November 2020. Before State, the Valdosta High Wildcats had only the Region 1 meet on 29 October 2020 scheduled. So on 24 October 2020 the Wildcat coach, Ryan Kelly, had a rare free Saturday morning. Why not head up to Adel, Georgia for a road race?


He did. Coach Kelly won the Hog Jog 5K in 18:30, finishing more than 400 meters ahead of the next runner. Adel's Kylie Downs, a sophomore on the Cook High girls' cross-country team, took first in the women's standings, placing nineteenth overall in 24:34.


Bonaire, Georgia master runner Jared Hammond finished second overall with a 20:07. The race for third place was a showdown between two cross-country runners--Caden McDaniel, an eighth-grader on the Cook Middle School boys' cross-country squad, and William Garcia, a junior who races with the Lowndes High boys. Both athletes went 20:18, but McDaniel took third while Garcia had to settle for fourth.


Kylie Downs' Cook High teammate, junior Maggie Gregory, finished runner-up in the women's standings, placing 21st overall in 25:22. Shonna O'Quinn of Adel was the first woman master and third female finisher, 22nd overall in 25:29.

Ryan Kelly and Kate Merritt were tough on the trails in General Coffee State Park

Two US Highways run through Coffee County, Georgia, but General Coffee State Park isn't located on either of them. The park isn't on what you'd call the beaten path. It was even less accessible on Saturday morning, 29 February 2020--according to the park website, a bridge across the Satilla River was closed, shutting down one of the more direct routes to General Coffee. The website further reported that:

The East River Swamp Trail is partially closed due to high water levels in the Seventeen Mile River. This closure does not affect the planned race route for the Heart to Heart 5/10 K.

Perhaps the park was remote, and maybe some trails were flooded, but more than a hundred athletes still made it for the Heart-to-Heart Run. In the ten-kilometer event, the fastest on the trails was Lake Park, Georgia master runnner Ryan Kelly, who posted a winning 38:17. The first woman in the 6.2-mile race was Kate Merritt, fifth overall in 48:55.


For years, Coffee Regional Medical Center had hosted the Heart-to-Heart Run on the streets of Douglas, Georgia. 2020 was the first year CRMC moved the race six miles east to the trails of General Coffee State Park. Some years the Heart-to-Heart Run had included both a ten-kilometer and a five-kilometer race; other years there had only been a five-kilometer event. Before 2020, the most recent Heart-to-Heart 10K had been the 2018 race, won by Valdosta State University cross-country runner Caleb Watson. When the 10K returned in 2020, Watson was there, and so was Valdosta High cross-country coach Ryan Kelly, who had won the Heart-to-Heart 5K in 2013.


Harriers Watson and Kelly left the rest of the 10K field far behind, but Kelly reached the finish line first, beating Watson 38:48 to 38:58. Miguel Rivas took third in 46:42. Master runner Bret Campbell finished fourth overall in 48:45.


In 2019 the 5K was the longest option available at Heart-to-Heart, so Kate Merritt raced that, winning the women's title. In 2020, just months after her frosh year cross-country season at Coffee High, Merritt moved up to the Heart-to-Heart 10K. She was the top woman in the longer race, running 48:55. Caitlin Mixon edged Katie Roberts for the runner-up spot in the women's standings, 53:03 to 53:04. Mixon and Roberts were ninth and tenth overall. Maria Highsmith was the top woman master and fifth female finisher in the 10K, placing nineteenth overall in 1:02:37, just ahead of female master runner Stephanie Deas (20th, 1:02:43).

Cameron Watson, a junior-year cross-country runner at Coffee High, won the Heart-to-Heart 5K for the third year in a row, covering the 3.1 mile in a winning 19:00. Another Coffee High harrier, sophomore Carter Young, placed second in 19:28, a step or two ahead of Ryan Campbell (3rd, 19:30). Allen Travelstead was the fastest master runner in the 5K, placing tenth overall in 23:01.


Ellie Perkins, a senior on the Coffee High cross-country team, was first in the women's standings of the 5K, placing 14th overall in 28:08. Master runner Heidi Hines was the women's runner-up, sixteenth overall in 28:35. At 29:11, master runner Trish Watson was the third female finisher and eighteenth overall in 29:11.


82 athletes finished the 2020 Heart-to-Heart 5K.

Ryan Kelly and Tracey Cole finish the Valdosta running year with Ugly Sweater 5K wins

After 2016, the New Year's Eve 5K disappeared from the Valdosta, Georgia running scene, leaving the Valdosta-Lowndes Parks and Recreation Authority's Ugly Sweater 5K as the year's racing finale for the city. On Saturday morning, 14 December 2019, the fourth annual Ugly Sweater 5K brought another year of distance running competition to a close in the Azalea City. Lake Park, Georiga master runner Ryan Kelly won that curtain call event by over 300 meters, running 19:48. Tracey Cole, a Pinetta, Florida master runner, was the first woman in the race for the second straight year, coming in third overall in 23:47.


Ruben Pule of Valdosta took the runner-up spot with a 21:17. Valdosta's Brennan Gallagher placed third in the men's standings and fifth overall in 25:04.


Kiley Matheson, a junior on the Lowndes High cross-country team, took second in the women's standings and fourth overall in 24:53. Hahira, Georgia master runner Libra Moses-Holland was the third woman and ninth overall in 26:55.

Ryan Kelly and Traci Ferris put the sting on the competition at the Honey Bee 5K

Honey bees aren't native to the Americas. You could even call them an invasive species, especially if they're nesting in the chimney or the attic of your house. But during the five centuries that honey bees have been in the New World, they've become an important part of the economy. At one time, this was especially true in Hahira, Georgia, which as a town was a major supplier of queen bees. That heritage is celebrated in Hahira's annual Honey Bee Festival, especially the Honey Bee 5K. On Saturday morning, 5 October 2019, Lake Park, Georgia master runner Ryan Kelly won the latest edition of the Honey Bee 5K, running 18:42. Traci Ferris of Valdosta, Georgia was the first woman in the race, placing eighth overall in 22:54.


It was the fourth Honey Bee win for Kelly; the Valdosta High cross-country coach had also won the race in 2012, 2013, and 2015. Hahira's own Colin Prinsloo finished runner-up to Kelly in 19:54. Ruben Pule of Valdosta took third in 20:40. Cason Register, an athlete on the Lanier County High cross-country team, edged Chad Northcutt of Quitman for fourth, 21:04 to 21:05.


Unlike Kelly, Traci Ferris hadn't won the Honey Bee 5K before, but she had posted a win in another Hahira race just seven days earlier, taking the women's title at the ninth annual Get-A-Mammy 5K. Amber Cardoza of Midland, Georgia placed second in the women's standings and tenth overall in 24:27. Hahira's Sarah Gatzemeier squeaked into third just ahead of Jamie Brown of Valdosta, 24:40 to 24:43. Gatzemeier and Brown were eleventh and twelfth overall. Leesburg, Georgia athlete Beth Cowles was the top woman master and nineteenth female finisher, 41st overall in 28:59.

Give Coach Kelly an 'A' for the B-1 5K

Finishing nearly half a kilometer ahead of the next runner, master runner Ryan Kelly won the fourth annual B-1 5K in Valdosta, Georgia on Saturday morning, 7 September 2019. The Valdosta High cross-country coach covered the 3.1-mile course in 20:10. Cyndi Spell of Valdosta was the first woman in the race, placing sixth overall in 26:33.


Ruben Pule of Valdosta ran 22:07 to take the runner-up spot behind Kelly. Another Valdosta athlete, Haydon Stone, was third in 24:12.


Mackenzie Stone of Valdosta placed second in the women's standings and ninth overall in 30:49. Sheri Swader of Lake Park, Georgia was the top woman master and third female finisher, tenth overall in 31:58.


22 athletes finished the 2019 B-1 5K for The Awareness and Prevention of Youth Suicide. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the event and provided finish line services.

Winning is the prescription for Ryan Kelly and Allie Brown at the Barnes 5K

In a match-up of two South Georgia master runners, Ryan Kelly edged Myles Gibson 18:50 to 18:53 for the top spot in Valdosta, Georgia's eleventh annual Barnes 100 Years 5K. Allie Brown of Cordele, Georgia took the women's title in the Saturday morning, 13 July 2019 race, placing fifth overall in 21:19.


As in each of the eleven years of the race's history, the 2019 Barnes 5K started from the downtown Valdosta headquarters of Barnes Healthcare. Kelly, the coach of the Valdosta High cross-country team, took the lead almost immediately. Donalsonville, Georgia's Gibson was able to keep Kelly in sight, but could never close with the leader.


"He had a much better kick at the end," admitted Gibson.


Kelly's kick earned him his fourth Barnes 5K victory. He has also won the race in 2013, 2016, and 2018, but 2019 was his first Barnes title as a master runner. Gibson improved on his own previous Barnes 5K showing, a 19:06 third-place performance in the 2018 race. Behind Kelly and Barnes, Chad Northcutt of Quitman, Georgia took third with a 20:29.


In contrast to the ages of the master runners who led the men's competition, women's champ Allie Brown is a sixteen-year-old rising junior on the Crisp High cross-country team. The first master runner on the women's side was Tracey Cole of Pinetta, Florida, the second female finisher and tenth overall in 23:20. Mary Alice Smoot placed third in the women's standings and eighteenth overall in 24:20--well off the 20:12 she had posted in the 2013 Barnes 5K, where she had finished first on the women's side.


118 athletes finished the 2019 Barnes Healthcare 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.

Ryan Kelly and Tracey Cole were exceptional in the Super Dad 5K

If you run a 5K road race faster than anyone else in the field, you're the winner. If you do it while pushing your two sons in a stroller, you're a dad. Ryan Kelly checked off both of those boxes on Saturday morning, 15 June 2019, winning Valdosta Main Street's inaugural Super Dad 5K on the streets of Valdosta, Georgia. A cross-country coach at Valdosta High, Kelly ran the 3.1-mile race in 19:44. Pinetta, Florida master runner Tracey Cole was the first woman in the race, placing fourteenth overall in 23:53.


Kelly was also the first master runner in the race, held on the day before Father's Day. Carl Hook of Valdosta took second behind Kelly in 20:05. Hahira, Georgia athlete Nicholas Roberts was third in 20:27.


Josie Long of Warner Robins, Georgia placed second in the women's standings and 23rd overall in 26:08. Tifton, Georgia's Maria Camacho was the third woman and 26th overall in 27:09.


The race started and finished in front of the Georgia Beer Company--"a Georgia Beer Co. COLD Beer when you cross the finish line!" was one of the advertised enticements for the race, one that many dads must have appreciated. It's unknown how many availed themselves of the brew, but 103 athletes finished the 2019 Super Dad 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.

In Adel, 2019 is 2014 all over again for Ryan Kelly and Shonna O'Quinn

It was a day for the master runners in Adel, Georgia on Saturday, 18 May 2019. That morning, Lake Park, Georgia master runner Ryan Kelly won Adel's tenth annual Daylily City 5K by just over 200 meters, running 17:54. Another master runner, Shonna O'Quinn of Adel, was the first woman in the 3.1-mile race, placing thirteenth overall in 23:34.


It was also a morning for repeat winners. Of the ten Daylily City 5K runs, this was Kelly's fifth win--the Valdosta High cross-country coach had also placed first in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2017. On the women's side, O'Quinn had previously won the Daylily City 5K in 2014.


Kelly's winning time of 17:54 was just four seconds off the event record of 17:50, a record Kelly himself had set in the 2015 race. Behind that 17:54, Cody Pezent of Adel finished runner-up in 18:31. Closely following Pezent, Johnny Artiaga, another Adel athlete, was third in 18:38. Artiaga is a frosh-year cross-country runner at Cook High, where Pezent is a graduating senior.


Victoria Garcia, an eighth-grader on the track team at Hahira Middle School, took second in the women's standings, placing sixteenth overall in 25:31. Adel master runner Angela Pezent was the third woman and seventeenth overall in 26:51.


77 athletes finished the 2019 Daylily City 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia timed the race and provided finish line services.

Ryan Kelly and Elizabeth Smith display mastery at the James Eunice Legacy 5K

Saturday, 13 April 2019, was a day for master runners at the eighth annual James Eunice Legacy 5K. Half of the first ten finishers in the Valdosta, Georgia road race were master runners. More significantly, the overall male winner and the overall female winner were both master runners. Lake Park, Georgia master runner Ryan Kelly took the men's crown, coming in first overall at 19:24. Elizabeth Smith of Valdosta was the first woman in the race, placing third overall in 22:29.


Kelly, the Valdosta High cross-country coach, had been third in the 2018 Eunice Legacy 5K, but ran ten seconds faster in his 2019 win. Daniel Carver of Hahira, Georgia was the overall runner-up, running 19:52. Hahira Middle School distance runner Connor Lites took third in the men's standings and fourth overall in 22:46. Nathan Smith edged Steve Plymale for the fourth men's spot, 22:58 to 23:00. The two Valdosta master runners were fifth and seventh overall.


Pinetta, Florida master runner Tracey Cole placed second in the women's division, finishing right between Smith and Plymale at 22:59. Natalie Ochoa of the USAF was the third woman and tenth overall in 24:23. Currently stationed at Moody Air Force Base, Ochoa was a high school cross-country runner back home in Arizona. She finished just ahead of a high school cross-country coach, Lowndes High's Martha Mazurkiewicz, the fourth woman and eleventh overall in 24:26.

Ryan Kelly and Alexandra Sayre were racing fast at Racing Mason

In the United States, indoor track season is in the winter. Outdoor track season is during the spring. Cross-country season comes in the fall. But every day of the year is running season. So even though Georgia's high school cross-country season had ended two weeks earlier with the GHSA State Championship Meet, On Saturday morning, 17 November 2018, there were more than a few cross-country runners racing on the streets of Valdosta, Georgia at the inaugural Racing Mason 5K. Valdosta High cross-country coach Ryan Kelly won the race by more than 400 meters, covering the 3.1-mile course in 18:29. Alexandra Sayre, a junior on the Lowndes High cross-country team, took the women's title, placing fifth overall in 22:47. 52 athletes finished the first-year race.


Mason Thompson, a sophomore harrier at Valdosta High, finished runner-up in the 5K with a 20:13. A Lowndes High harrier, senior Micahel Kelly, placed third in 20:20. Austin Bruhl, another senior on the Lowndes High squad, took fourth in 22:30. Rick Mazurkiewicz was the fastest master runner in the race, placing fifth in the men's standings and sixth overall in 22:48. Mazurkiewicz is a community coach for the Lowndes High cross-country team.


Tracy Cole was the second woman in the race and tenth overall in 24:11. Casie Ward was the third woman and sixteenth overall in 27:04. Lowndes High frosh Bianca Anderson placed fourth on the women's side and eighteenth overall in 27:21. Nicole Anderson was the top woman master and fifth female finisher, nineteenth overall in 28:00.


Proceeds of the Racing Mason 5K and one-mile fun run are earmarked for new playground equipment for Mason Elementary School in Valdosta.

Ryan Kelly and Kelly Lunceford take first in the tenth Barnes 5K

When Charles W. Barnes opened his drug store in 1909, I don't know if his vision for the business included the dream that it would one day host an annual road race. If it did, his successors realized that dream in 2009 when they staged the first Barnes Healthcare 5K in Valdosta. Nine years later, on Saturday morning, 14 July 2018, Barnes Healthcare was hosting the race for the tenth time. Ryan Kelly picked up his third Barnes 5K title that morning, running a winning 18:21. Kelly Lunceford, the women's champ ten days earlier at the Valdosta Independence Day 5K, won the Barnes 5K women's title in 21:30, placing fifth overall.


Ryan Kelly, the Valdosta High cross-country coach, had been first in the Barnes 5K twice before. Coach Kelly had won the 2013 race by only eight seconds and the 2016 race by less than four seconds. The 2018 event was similarly close, with Kelly finishing not quite 30 meters ahead of runner-up Nick Rosatti, 18:21 to 18:28. Myles Gibson of Donalsonville, Georgia was the top master runner in the race, third overall in 19:07.


Behind Kelly Lunceford, Brenna Clark was second in the women's standings. Clark, a rising sophomore on the Valwood High cross-country team, placed eighth overall in 23:29. Another Valwood High cross-country runner, rising sophomore Jolie Green, took third in the women's standings and fourteenth overall in 25:33. Debbie Green of Valdosta was the first woman master and fifth female finisher, nineteenth overall in 26:59.


115 athletes finished the 2018 Barnes Healthcare 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.

Ryan Kelly and Chandra Smith lead the way at the Sentinel Sprint 5K

Madison, Florida's annual 5K road race has been around for more than 30 years. Over the decades it has been called the Colin P. Kelly 5K, the Colin Kelly Fitness Run, and the Down Home Days Fitness Run. On Saturday morning, 21 April 2018, the race was back with another new name, the Sentinel Sprint 5K, and a new course on the North Florida Community College Campus. The 5K also crowned a new champion, Ryan Kelly of Lake Park, Georgia. Kelly, the Valdosta High cross-country coach, won the Sentinel Sprint by close to 700 meters, running 18:15. Master runner Chandra Smith was the first woman in the race, placing thirteenth overall in 28:20.


William Carter of Perry, Florida was the first master runner in the 5K, placing second overall in 21:13. Carter was the overall winner of the race in 21:13. Dylan Gulmette, who had been fifth in the 2016 race and third in 2017, took third in 2018 with a 22:04.


Master runner Mary Carter was second in the women's standings and fourteenth overall in 28:39. Another veteran of the race, Carter had been third in the women's standings in both 2016 and 2017. In a tight race for the third women's spot, Keisha Martinez (30:13) edged Tina Tucker (30:16) and Brandi Browning. Martinez, Tucker, and Browning were eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth overall.


52 athletes finished the 2018 Sentinel Sprint 5K.

Kelly and Purvis win the Jog With The Generals

Some 900 people live in Dasher, Georgia--fewer than a thousand. Somehow, that tiny city hosts four races each year, a pair of 5K runs, a 10K, and a half marathon. Measured either my miles or by events, that's a lot of racing per capita. But if you drive past Dasher on US 41, you might notice that the center of town is marked by a two-lane running track. Running seems to be in the soul of Dasher.


Two of those races, a 10K and a 5K, took place on Saturday morning, 3 February 2018, during Georgia Christian School's sixth annual Jog With The Generals. Lake Park, Georgia's Ryan Kelly won the 10K for the third time in four years, covering the 6.2 miles in 38:41. Tifton, Georgia master runner Gina Purvis won the women's title, placing ninth overall in 55:05.


Rick Mazurkiewicz of Valdosta, Georgia was the fastest master runner in the 10K as well as the overall runner-up, running 41:31. Alan Sanderson, another Valdosta master runner, took third in 46:52.


Before winning the women's division in the 2018 race, Purvis had been second in the women's standings in 2017. Naylor, Georgia master runner Lina Smidt had been the eighth woman in the Jog With The Generals 5K in 2017; in 2018 she moved up to the 10K where she was the second woman and eleventh overall in 58:04. Julia Florack of Valdosta was the third woman and twelfth overall in 58:15.

As an eleven-year-old, Parker Jackson had won the Jog With the Generals 5K in 2016. He finished third in the 2017 race, but in 2018 Jackson won again. An eighth-grader on the Valdosta Middle School cross-country team, this time Jackson ran 19:41, his best mark at the Jog With The Generals in four years. Bryce Jackson, a sophomore on the Valdosta High cross-country team, was just a few steps behind Parker Jackson, placing second in 19:44. Colton Baldwin, a frosh cross-country runner at Valdosta High, took third in 20:19.


Fourteen-year old Jacey Gaiss of Valdosta was the women's champ in the 5K, coming in twelfth overall in 27:37. Valdosta master runner Michelle Itturalde was the second woman and thirteenth overall in 27:53. Valdosta's thirteen-year-old Victoria Garcia was third in the women's division and fifteenth overall in 28:49.


Seventeen athletes finished the 2018 Jog With The Generals 10K and 64 finished the 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the races and provided finish line services.
