Ryan Kelly and Elizabeth Smith display mastery at the James Eunice Legacy 5K

Saturday, 13 April 2019, was a day for master runners at the eighth annual James Eunice Legacy 5K. Half of the first ten finishers in the Valdosta, Georgia road race were master runners. More significantly, the overall male winner and the overall female winner were both master runners. Lake Park, Georgia master runner Ryan Kelly took the men's crown, coming in first overall at 19:24. Elizabeth Smith of Valdosta was the first woman in the race, placing third overall in 22:29.


Kelly, the Valdosta High cross-country coach, had been third in the 2018 Eunice Legacy 5K, but ran ten seconds faster in his 2019 win. Daniel Carver of Hahira, Georgia was the overall runner-up, running 19:52. Hahira Middle School distance runner Connor Lites took third in the men's standings and fourth overall in 22:46. Nathan Smith edged Steve Plymale for the fourth men's spot, 22:58 to 23:00. The two Valdosta master runners were fifth and seventh overall.


Pinetta, Florida master runner Tracey Cole placed second in the women's division, finishing right between Smith and Plymale at 22:59. Natalie Ochoa of the USAF was the third woman and tenth overall in 24:23. Currently stationed at Moody Air Force Base, Ochoa was a high school cross-country runner back home in Arizona. She finished just ahead of a high school cross-country coach, Lowndes High's Martha Mazurkiewicz, the fourth woman and eleventh overall in 24:26.


80 athletes finished the 2019 James Eunice Legacy 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.

Tracy and Smith were a cut above the rest at the "Don't Run With Scissors!" 5K

On Saturday morning, 17 March 2018, Ryan Kelly and Dan Butzin were on the starting line of the ninth annual "Don't Run With Scissors!" 5K. Butzin was the defending champion of the race, having won in 2017. Kelly was a four-time champion of the Scissors 5K, with wins in 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2016. But neither Butzin nor Kelly was first across the finish line in 2018. Justin Tracy had that honor, winning the race in 18:07. Elizabeth Smith of Valdosta took the Scissors 5K women's title for the second year in a row, placing eighth overall in 21:46.


Until recently Justin Tracy was a Maine athlete, running cross-country and track first at Mount Blue High School and then at the University of Maine. He is definitely already making his mark on Valdosta distance running--Tracy's 18:07 is the fastest Scissors 5K winning time since 2011.


80 meters behind Tracy, Ryan Kelly was second in 18:25. Parker Childree was third in 19:06, and Parker Jackson, an eighth-grader on the Valdosta Middle School cross-country team, took fourth in 19:11. Rick Mazurkiewicz was the fastest master runner in the race, placing sixth overall in 19:56. Scissors 5K defending champion Dan Butzin was seventh in 20:48.


Kelly Lunceford was the second woman and tenth overall in in the women's standings, Valdosta High sophomore cross-country runner Katelyn Lancaster was the third woman and tenth overall in 22:25. Valdosta High sophomore cross-country runner Katelyn Lancaster was third in the women's standings and thirteenth overall in 22:35.


195 athletes finished the 2018 "Don't Run With Scissors!" 5K. The race is an annual fundraiser for the art department of Sallas Malone Elementary School.

Butzin and Smith spare the scissors but not the speed

Valdosta Middle School's Don't Run With Scissors 5K has graced the racing calendar in Valdosta, Georgia annually since 2010. I don't know whether or not in the first eight years of the event anyone ever appeared on the starting line with a pair of those giant golden scissors that politician use at ribbon cuttings for bridges, highways, and wastewater treatment plants. I do know that on Saturday morning, 18 March 2017, Valdosta athlete Dan Butzin won the eighth annual Don't Run With Scissors 5K by over 150 meters, running 19:31. Elizabeth Smith took the women's title, placing fifth overall in 21:39.


Butzin had placed second at the Scissors 5K in 2015 and third in 2016, but this was his first win at the race. Parker Reid Jackson, a cross-country runner on the Valdosta Middle School team, was second behind Butzin in 20:08. Kasey Taylor took third in 20:34. Alan Sanderson was the first master runner in the race, coming in sixth overall in 22:07.


Like Butzin, women's champ Elizabeth Smith had some history at the Scissors 5K. Smith had placed second to master runner Alice Smoot in the women's standings of the 2016 race, running 21:57. Returning in 2017, Smith trimmed eighteen seconds off her previous year's time to claim the women's crown. Kelly Davis was second to Smith on the women's side, placing seventh overall in 22:59. Pollyanna Bass was the top woman master and third female finisher, ninth overall in 23:06.


136 athletes finished the 2017 Don't Run With Scissors 5K. A Course/Line, LLC of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.

Kelly and Smith forge wins at the Cast Iron 5K

The sixth annual Cast Iron 5K was part of that Quitman, Georgia festival on 15 October 2016. Ryan Kelly won the Saturday morning race, covering the 3.1-miles through the streets of Quitman in 18:37. Elizabeth Smith of Valdosta, Georgia took the women's title, placing fifth overall in 21:33.


It was the first Saturday in some time that Kelly was able to race. Most Saturdays during the autumn of 2016 the Lake Park, Georgia athlete was busy coaching the Valdosta High cross-country team. This weekend, though, Kelly was free to travel to Quitman for another duel with his rival on the South Georgia roads, Valdosta runner Dan Butzin. Butzin was second in the Cast Iron 5K, running 18:52. Thomasville, Georgia's Chad Johnson was the fastest master runner in the race and third overall in 20:15.


On the women's side, it was the second Cast Iron 5K win for Elizabeth Smith; she had also won the race in 2014. Kelly Davis of Valdosta, Georgia was second in the women's standings and seventh overall in 21:33. Hahira, Georgia athlete Brandy Van Jura was the third woman and ninth overall in 23:48. The previous year's women's champion, Beverly Johnson of Thomasville, was fourth in the women's competition, finishing thirteenth overall in 24:08. Traci Newton from Saint Simons Island, Georgia was the top woman master and fifth female finisher, fourteenth overall in 24:24.


68 athletes finished the 2016 Cast Iron 5K. Timing and finish line services were provided by A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia.

Pyle, Smith prove no flash-in-the-pan at Skillet Festival's Cast Iron 5K

Skillet Festival BannersIn the Quitman, Georgia, Cast Iron 5K on Saturday morning, 18 October 2014, Thomasville, Georgia, athlete Gareth Pyle made it to the finish line only just ahead of Rose City Tri Club's Chad Johnson. But Pyle did edge out Johnson, 20:16 to 20:18, winning the race and successfully defending his 2013 title in the race. Pyle's time for the 3.1-mile course was over half-a-minute faster than his winning time the previous year. Johnson's 20:18 earned him the top master spot in the standings.


Coming in third overall at 21:36, Elizabeth Smith of Valdosta, Georgia, topped the women's standings. Alison Thornhill of Valdosta was the women's runner up, placing fifth overall in 22:19. Valdosta's Debbie Green was the first woman master, finishing sixth overall in 22:31.


Put on by the Boys And Girls Club of Valdosta, the Cast Iron 5K is part of the Brooks County Skillet Festival. The annual festival is held in Quitman, Georgia, on the third Saturday of October. Finish line and timing services were provided by A Course / Line, LLC, of Valdosta. 59 athletes finished the 2014 race.

Leisey and Smith get wins at Get-A-Mammy 5K

Hahira athlete Kyle Leiser led a field of 87 athletes around the streets of Valdosta, Georgia, to win the fourth annual Get-A-Mammy 5K on Saturday morning, 27 September 2014. Finishing almost half a kilometer ahead of the next runner, Leisey's time for the 3.1-mile race was 19:47. Adam Gatzemeier of Valdosta finished runner-up in 21:50.


On the women's side, Valdosta's Elizabeth Smith didn't finish with as big a lead as Leisey, but she still won the women's title by a comfortable margin of over 100 meters, placing third overall in 22:04. Valdosta master runner Melanie Ellis was second in the women's standings, coming in fourth overall in 22:37.


Since 2010 the race has been an annual fundraiser for Get-A-Mammy, Inc., a non-profit whose programs include providing and administering funds for free mammograms to those who need financial assistance in obtaining a mammogram. 87 athletes finished the 2014 Get-A-Mammy 5K.

"Cross Country is Fun," so fun that Kelly and Smith are back for a second year

Ryan KellyThe results for the 2014 "Cross Country is Fun" 5K came with a disclaimer: "The event was held on an actual XC course, not a road course."


This may seem odd, but in 2013 the first "Cross Country is Fun" race was held on the streets around the Valdosta State University campus. Next year it may very well be a 5000-meter race on the track, but the 2014 race was held on a true cross-country course over the turf and trails of Freedom Park in Valdosta, Georgia. The very same course was used immediately afterwards for the high school races of Valdosta High's Wildcat Cross-Country Invitational.


Ryan Kelly is the cross country coach for the Wildcats, but before his squad took the course he posted a winning 19:18 5K in the "Cross Country Is Fun" race. It was Kelly's second straight win in the annual race; he had also won the first "Cross Country Is Fun" 5K in 2013. Brishen House of Valdosta took second in 20:35, and Valdosta's Decker House placed third in 20:51.


Valdosta runner Elizabeth Smith won the women's title, finishing fourth overall in 23:27. Smith had placed fourth in the women's standings in the 2013 edition of the race.


Terry Adams was the fastest master in the field, finishing seventh overall in 23:57. Just behind Adams, women's runner-up Melanie Ellis placed eighth overall in 24:00, the first master woman in the race.


47 athletes completed the 3.1-mile route through Freedom Park.

Fast times add up to wins for Hall and Smith

Cumulative 5KSuppose that you have a recurring nightmare where you're back on your high school track team, scheduled to double in the 1600 and the 3200, and your coach walks up to you and says, "I know it's not your event, but we need you to run the 200." Well, if that haunts your dreams at night, then the Cumulative 5K is not for you. In the event, runners race a 3200, line up for a 200 after a short rest, then do a third and final 1600-meter race. Standings are determined by the sum of the three times each runner recorded while racing a total of 5000 meters.


For Valdosta State cross-country runner Josh Hall, though, the Cumulative 5K is exactly the stuff that dreams are made of, good dreams. On Saturday morning, 26 July 2014, Hall won the third annual Cumulative 5K in Hahira, Georgia, covering 5000 meters of running on the Valwood School track in 16:50.2. Valdosta's Rick Mazurkiewicz was the best master runner in the Cumulative, placing fourth in the overall standings with a 19:34.0 total. Elizabeth Smith of Valdosta was the top woman in the event, coming in seventh overall with a 21:03.1. Alice Smoot, the women's champ at the 2012 Cumulative, was this year's top woman master, tenth overall in 21:44.6.


Josh Hall wasted no time getting out front in the 2014 Cumulative. During the opening race he lapped the entire field, posting 11:01.9 for the 3200--the fastest 3200 leg in the history of the Cumulative. Hall followed up with the fastest 200 meters of the morning, a 29.6, and concluded his efforts with a 5:18.7 1600, the fastest 1600 ever run at the Cumulative. It all went to add up to a Cumulative 5K record of 16:50.2.


Behind Hall, Valdosta High cross-country coach Ryan Kelly ended the 3200 in second place at 12:39.4, 12 seconds up on Rick Mazurkiewicz (12:51.6), and 17 seconds ahead of DeShon Taylor (12:56.3). Kelly logged a 35.4 200, losing ground to Mazurkiewicz (32.1) and Taylor (31.9), but holding on to second. Taylor concluded the Cumulative with the second best 1600 of the day, 5:55.2, overtaking Marzurkiewicz in the standings. Taylor's time wasn't fast enough to catch Kelly, though; the coach's 6:02.5 gave him a second-place sum of 19:17.3. Taylor was third in 19:23.4 and Mazurkiewicz fourth in 19:34.0.


Elizabeth Smith had the fastest women's times in each of the three races--13:44.5, 38.1, and 6:40.5--clearly giving her a winning total of 21:03.1. In the battle for second place in the women's standings, Debbie Green edged Alice Smoot in the 3200, 14:14.1 to 14:16.7, then again in the 200, 36.5 to 41.2. It came down to the 1600, where Smoot made up the 7.3-second deficit and more, outrunning Green 6:46.7 to 7:03.7. At 21:44.6 Smoot was the second woman and first woman master; Green was third woman and second woman master at 21:54.3.


28 athletes completed the 2014 Cumulative 5K.
