Nevin Swanson and Tracey Cole were on fire at the Blaze The Day 5K

They came to Valdosta, Georgia. They came from the north, they came from the south. They came on Saturday morning, 24 August 2019, for the fourteenth annual Blaze The Day 5K.

From the north--Douglas, Georgia--Nevin Swanson came to win the race, finishing 200 meters ahead of the next runner in 19:42. From the south--Pinetta, Florida--master runner Tracey Cole came to capture the women's title, placing fifth overall in 23:48.

Only a week before his Blaze The Day win, Swanson, a high school frosh, had finished his first cross-country race as a Coffee High Trojan. Swanson's victory made it the second year in a row that a Coffee harrier had won the race--Trojan sophomore Cameron Watson was the 2018 Blaze The Day champ. Behind Swanson, Valdosta's Quin McGlamery outkicked Chad Northcutt of Quitman, Georgia for the runner-up spot, 20:34 to 20:35. Jim O'Connor of Hahira, Georgia was the fastest master runner in the 5K, placing fourth overall in 21:08.

Tracey Cole, the first overall woman, was also the first woman master. Thomasville, Georgia master runner Catherine Jones took second in the women's standings, placing eleventh overall in 26:51. Master runner Pollyanna Bass of Pavo, Georgia was the third woman and twelfth overall in 26:58.

54 athletes finished the 2019 Blaze The Day 5K. The race was a fundraiser for the Valdosta State University Blazer cross-country teams. Each participating athlete received a Valdosta State Cross-Country bumper sticker, a way for them to display their support for the program. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.

Ryan Kelly and Tracey Cole were exceptional in the Super Dad 5K

If you run a 5K road race faster than anyone else in the field, you're the winner. If you do it while pushing your two sons in a stroller, you're a dad. Ryan Kelly checked off both of those boxes on Saturday morning, 15 June 2019, winning Valdosta Main Street's inaugural Super Dad 5K on the streets of Valdosta, Georgia. A cross-country coach at Valdosta High, Kelly ran the 3.1-mile race in 19:44. Pinetta, Florida master runner Tracey Cole was the first woman in the race, placing fourteenth overall in 23:53.

Kelly was also the first master runner in the race, held on the day before Father's Day. Carl Hook of Valdosta took second behind Kelly in 20:05. Hahira, Georgia athlete Nicholas Roberts was third in 20:27.

Josie Long of Warner Robins, Georgia placed second in the women's standings and 23rd overall in 26:08. Tifton, Georgia's Maria Camacho was the third woman and 26th overall in 27:09.

The race started and finished in front of the Georgia Beer Company--"a Georgia Beer Co. COLD Beer when you cross the finish line!" was one of the advertised enticements for the race, one that many dads must have appreciated. It's unknown how many availed themselves of the brew, but 103 athletes finished the 2019 Super Dad 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.

Isaac Chambers and Timmy Evans take it to the homestretch at the Valiant 5K

Valiant 5KIn 2018, Valwood School's fourth annual cross-country race was called the Homestretch 5K. The women's competition wasn't nearly as close, with Pinetta, Florida master runner Tracey Cole winning by more than 250 meters, placing fifth overall in 24:15.

Not burnin' love, but Blazin' Love for Cameron Watson and Tracey Cole in Valdosta

VSC Cross Country 1975By Saturday morning, 16 February 2019, not only was Saint Valentine's Day over, and all the chocolate that had gone on sale the next day had been gobbled up. Love was still in the air, though, and the Blazin' Love 5K was on the roads of Valdosta, Georgia. Cameron Watson won the fourth annual race, covering the 3.1 miles in 17:16. Tracey Cole of Pinetta, Florida was the first woman across the finish line, placing fourteenth overall in 23:39.

A Douglas, Georgia athlete, Watson is a sophomore on the Coffee High cross-country squad. Running for the Trojans, he won the class 6A Region 1 boys' race during the 2018 season. The cross-country connection was fitting; the Blazin' Love 5K is a benefit for the Valdosta State University cross-country program.

Justin Tracy of Lake Park, Georgia took the runner-up spot in the 5K, running 17:29. Tanner Reid, a first-year Valdosta State University student and recent alum of the Perry High cross-country team, nabbed third with a 17:43. Lake Park's Ryan Kelly, the cross-country coach at Valdosta High, was the fastest master runner in the race, placing fourth overall in 18:56.

Martha Mazurkiewicz was the top woman master in the 5K and the second female finisher, eighteenth overall in 24:30. A Valdosta runner, Mazurkiewicz is a cross-country coach at Lowndes High. The next two runners in the women's standings were just a few steps behind Mazurkiewicz--Maryann Rowe (19th, 24:33) and Natalie Chandler (20th, 24:38). Both Rowe and Chandler are junior-year athletes on the Berrien County High cross-country team.

82 athletes finished the 2019 Blazin' Love 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.
