Vince Molosky and Katie Sherron add to their Indianhead victories at Nene Fest

Vince Molosky was on familiar ground at the fifth annual Nene Fest 5K, even though he had never run the race before.

The Nene Fest 5K has always been run on the same course through Tallahassee, Florida's Indianhead Acres neighborhood as Gulf Winds Track Club's Women's Distance Festival--a September event that Molosky has raced frequently over the years. In 2010 Molosky won the men's 5K at the Women's Distance Festival, running 16:34. More recently, he ran 17:21 in the 2017 WDF 5K, placing third in the men's standings. So on Saturday morning, 28 April 2018, it was just another fast turn around Indianhead for Molosky when he won the Nene Fest 5K in 17:02. Katie Sherron had even more experience on the Indianhead course, having won the Women's Distance Festival in both 2015 and 2017; she also came into the 2018 Nene Fest 5K as the defending women's champion. She successfully repeated, running 19:16 to finish as the first woman and seventh overall.

Up front, Chris O'Kelley finished the Nene Fest in 17:07, just a few steps behind Molosky. Seven month earlier at the 2017 Women's Distance Festival, the margin betweeen O'Kelley and Molosky had been about the same, but in that earlier race O'Kelley had been ahead, 17:17 to 17:21. Ryan Truchelut edged Brad Busboom for third in the Nene Fest, 17:45 to 17:48, and Kurt Dietrich was fifth in 18:02. Jim Halley, the 2017 Nene Fest 5K winner, took sixth in 18:42. Paul Guyas was the top master runner in the race and the ninth male finisher, placing tenth overall in 19:42.

Brittney Barnes, racing her first Nene Fest but not her first run on the Indianhead course, was second in the women's standings and fifteenth overall in 21:10. Angela Dempsey was the first woman master and third female finisher, twentieth overall in 21:42. A few ticks after Dempsey crossed the finish line, Monica Toth came in as the fourth woman and 22nd overall in 21:46.

159 athletes finished the 2018 Nene Fest 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee chip-timed the race.

Chance Logan makes a fast trip to Tate's Hell And Back

Tate's Hell And Back 5KThe legend has it that nearly two hundred years ago, Cebe Tate got lost in the swamps near his home in Sumatra, Florida. His experiences were so horrific that he died soon after finding his way out near Carrabelle. In memory of his tale, the swamp is called "Tate's Hell."

According to Will McLean's version of the story, Tate was twelve days--"a full week and then five days more"--making it into the swamp and back. Present day travelers spend less time getting in and out of Tate's Hell, sometimes less than twenty minutes. On Saturday morning, 28 April 2018, Chance Logan won the third annual Tate's Hell And Back 5K in Carrabelle, running 18:23. Chelsea Marshall-Hirvela was the first woman in the race, placing tenth overall in 26:17.

Arden Olson was the fastest master runner in the 5K; he was second overall in 22:05. Austin Gray, a frosh year cross-country runner at Franklin County High, took third overall in 22:16.

Just a few seconds behind women's champ Chelsea Marshall-Hirvela, Laura Garey was second in the women's standings and eleventh overall in 26:22. Christine Lamia was the top woman master and third female finisher, placing fourteenth overall in 27:18.

89 athletes finished the 2018 Tate's Hell And Back 5K. The race is one of the events of the annual Carrabelle Riverfront Festival, so look for the fourth annual Tate's Hell And Back 5K on 27 April 2019.

Chris Haynes and Ann Centner repeat at Rose City

"This is the best day for running we've had in quite a few years," declared Dr. Jim Story before the start of the Rose City 10K.

Dr. Story should know. Including the first race in 1978, there have been 41 annual Rose City Runs in Thomasville, Georgia, and Dr. Story has directed each of them. But if you don't believe Dr. Story, then look at the performances of Chris Haynes and Ann Centner. Leading from wire-to-wire, Haynes won the Rose City 10K on Saturday morning, 28 April 2018, running a career best time of 31:43 and repeating as the race's champion. Centner also ran a career best, 38:27, placing second overall and winning the women's title for a second year in a row. Haynes ran over a minute faster than his winning time in 2017; Centner improved more than two minutes on her 2017 showing. You don't see performances like that on a crummy day.

Chris Haynes and Ann Centner
Chris Haynes and Ann Centner

It was indeed cool, clear, and bright when the race got started at 8:00 AM. The athletes made their first turn about 600 meters into the run, making a left from Broad Street onto Smith Avenue. At the turn the field had already separated into two different races--Chris Haynes and everyone else. It was uncharted territory for Haynes; he was running faster than he ever had before in a 10K, even going back to his college running days at the University of North Florida.

"I had never broken 32:00 on the track before, let alone the road," said Haynes.

Chris Haynes
Chris Haynes

But Haynes got into a rhythm, and the distance flowed by.

"I didn't run a mile under 5:00," said Haynes. "But I didn't run a mile over 5:10."

That included the last mile, which featured the notorious Clay Street climb, "Heartbreak Hill."

Geb Kiros
Geb Kiros

"I felt Heartbreak," admitted Haynes.

But there was just over half a mile left to run after cresting that final hill, and Haynes rolled through that remaining distance, crossing the finish line in a winning 31:43. It was the first sub-32:00 performance at Rose City since 2007, when Alan Black won the race in 31:21. But there's no resting on his laurels for Haynes.

Philip Sura
Philip Sura

"I've got a lot more work to do," said Haynes. "I'm happy with today's time, though."

Haynes went unchallenged for the entire ten kilometers; his run was virtually a time trial. That wasn't the case at all for Ann Centner. Haynes had been all but alone going around the first turn on the course, but at that same point Centner was just a few steps ahead of Sheryl Rosen. Rosen is a three-time Rose City women's champ, with a best time of and she ran 36:51 on the course during her 2012 win. After the turn, Rosen pulled even with Centner.

Sheryl Rosen and Ann Centner
Sheryl Rosen and Ann Centner

"I kept throwing in short surges trying to throw her off," recalled Centner. "But I didn't want to kill the pace because I was already running my fastest 10K time ever. Even at the 5K mark she was right with me."

During the second half of the race, Centner began to pull ahead of Rosen. Rosen wasn't going away, though.

"I could hear people cheer for me, and right after I went by I'd hear them cheer for her. So I knew she was right behind."

Ann Centner
Ann Centner

At five-and-a-half miles Rosen was only six seconds behind Centner. But Rosen wasn't coming back. Centner widened the gap as the race closed, beating Rosen to the finish line 38:27 to 38:36.

Haynes works at Leon High School in Tallahassee, Florida, while Centner works at the University of Georgia Extension Office in Blakely, Georgia. Both won their second straight Rose City Run title, both ran their best 10K at the 2018 Rose City Run. Haynes ran long distance at North Florida while Centner ran middle distance at Georgia, but they did have one bit of common ground in their college athletic careers.

"We had same college coach, Jeff Pigg," said Haynes. "He left Georgia to come to UNF."

Sheryl Rosen

"We talk about that a lot," said Centner.

Florida A & M University professor Geb Kiros was the first master runner in the race and second in the men's standings, finishing fourth overall in 39:20. Florida State University professor Philip Sura was the third man in the race and fifth overall in 41:17. Erika Hango of Tallahassee was the third woman and fourteenth overall in the 10K, running 43:46. Leon High frosh cross-country runner Lilly Unger was fourth in the women's standings and seventeenth overall in 44:34. Shelby Augustyniak of Tallahassee was the first woman master and tenth female finisher, 54th overall in 49:58.

310 athletes finished the 2018 Rose City Run 10K, while another 151 finished the kids' mile run. Both races were chip-timed by Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee. And if you're looking for another fast 10K on another perfect day?

"The 42nd Rose City Run will be next year on April 27," said Dr. Story.

Myles Gibson has a record Run For The Ranch in Moultrie

The long race at the Moultrie, Georgia Run For The Ranch is 10K, 10,000 meters. On Saturday morning, 21 April 2018, things were going well for Donalsonville master runner Myles Gibson in that long race. Or at least they were going well for the first 9,600 meters. With the finish line nearly in sight, Gibson was leading the race by almost 3,000 meters. Then things went wrong.

"My left calf pulled real sharp with 400 meters remaining," reported Gibson.

Nevertheless, Gibson made it to the end, winning the third annual Run For The Ranch 10K in 38:38. It was faster than the 38:42 he had clocked seven weeks earlier at the Bainbridge River Run 10K. It was also more than two minutes better than the previous Run For The Ranch 10K record, set in 2017 by Colin Prinsloo. Mary Sue Thompson of Moultrie was the top woman in the race, placing third overall in 53:43.

Moultrie's Jason Pittman was runner-up in the 10K, posting a 53:17. Valdosta, Georgia master runner Rodney Elam was the third male finisher and fifth overall in 57:21.

Just ahead of Elam, Laura Little of Doerun, Georgia was the second woman in the race, placing fourth overall in 57:18. Whitney Pilgrim of Moultrie took third in the women's standings and seventh overall in 58:55. Tammy Curran of Tifton, Georgia was the first woman master and fifth female finisher, ninth overall in 61:25.

Tallahassee's top 5K road times in 2018 (through April 21)

Tallahassee has a new top road 5K performance for the year after Saturday morning, 21 April 2018, and Gulf Winds Track Club's 44th annual Palace Saloon Road Race. Justin Garrard won that race in 15:15, exactly a minute faster than the previous best for 2018. On the women's side, there's a new number two performance; the 18:05 that Ani Veltcheva ran at the Palace Saloon.

The Palace Saloon 5K has always been a rankings-wrecker of a race, and this year's event was no exception. If you look at the men's top 25, all of the top three times were run at the Palace and four of the top five. Garrard's 15:15 is number one, Chris Haynes is second on the list with his 15:21 from the Palace, Andrew Smith's Palace time of 15:52 puts him third on the list, and Caleb Carmichael went 16:33 at the Palace to rank fifth in the men's top 25. In all, fifteen of the top 25 men are ranked because of their performance at the Palace Saloon 5K.

In the women's rankings, Adriana Piekarewicz still leads with the 17:59 she posted at the Run For The Cookies 5K. But Ani Veltcheva moves into second with her 18:05 at the Palace, her first race on the Tallahassee roads this year. Veltcheva has Tallahassee's top road 5K on the women's list in 2017, a 17:35 at the Run For The Cookies. Ann Centner also made her first appearance on Tallahassee's 2018 road 5K rankings, debuting at fourth with her Palace time of 18:28. Sheryl Rosen took two ticks off her best time of the year, running 18:45 at the Palace. Rosen is fifth on the women's list. Lauren Poulos (7th, 19:30), Jamila Allen (12th, 20:32), Amanda Sava (15th, 21:02), Corinne Porcher (20th, 21:29), and Elisha Boggs (23rd, 21:41) also hold spots in the women's rankings on the basis of their Palace Saloon 5K times.

In spite of master runner Tony Guillen's 18:03 at the Palace, Carter Hay continues to hold the top master runner spot on the men's list with the 18:00 he posted at the Run For The Cookies 5K on 10 February 2018. Going into the Palace Saloon 5K, Corinne Porcher was the top master runner on the women's list, ranked 24th on the basis of the 22:30 she ran at the Shamrock Scurry 5K on 3 March 2018. Master runner Elisha Boggs ran 21:41 at the Palace, challenging Porcher's position as top master. However, Porcher had already finished the Palace, running 21:29. 20th on the list, she's still Tallahassee's leading woman master in the road 5K for 2018.

The Palace Saloon 5K traditionally showcases quality athletes running quality performances, and 2018 upheld that tradition. That's not to say, though, that someone couldn't put up a ranking-wrecker of a time at another Tallahassee 5K on a USATF-certified course. It could happen at any race meeting these criteria:
  • The race has to be in Tallahassee (anywhere in Leon County is fine)
  • The race has to be run on a USATF certified course
  • The race has to have published results
  • I have to see the results
The next such race is the fifth annual Nene Fest 5K in Indianhead Acres on Saturday morning, 28 April 2018. While we're waiting to see how that event impacts the rankings, here are the current lists:
