Tallahassee's top 10K road times in 2017

When it came to 10K on the roads in Tallahassee during 2017, Justin Garrard had the fastest performance of the year, running 32:42 at the Tallahassee Turkey Trot. Ani Veltcheva had the top women's time in Tallahassee, running 37:21 at the Springtime 10K.


Races come and races go, but each year there seem to be several ten kilometer races in Tallahassee. One or two are on the track, a few are cross-country, and several are on the road. During 2017 Thomasville Road Baptist Church canceled their 10K road race, but Saint Peter's Anglican Church inaugurated a new 10K on the roads. In all there were four road races in Tallahassee on USATF-certified ten-kilometer courses during the year.

First up was the oldest and the largest of the four, the 42nd annual Springtime 10K on 1 April 2017. Chris Haynes won that race, running 32:51. No one bettered that time at the Run 2-1-1 10K on 3 June 2017 or the Saint Peters's Anglican Church 10K on 17 June 2017. But on 23 November 2017, Garrard ran 32:42 in the Turkey Trot 10K, knocking Haynes from the top spot in the rankings. It was the second year in a road that Garrard had led Tallahassee's road 10K men's performance list.


After Garrard's mark, all the other times in the men's top ten for 2017 came from the Springtime 10K, including the best mark by a master runner--the 36:37 run by Mickey Moore. Moore's time is ninth on the men's list for the year.


When Ani Veltcheva stepped to the starting line of the Springtime 10K, she had already run the fastest women's time for a road 5K in Tallahassee during 2017--a 17:35 at the Run For The Cookies 5K on 11 February 2017. When she crossed the finish line at Springtime, she also had the leading women's time for a road 10K, a 37:21. Both times were still at the top of the women's lists at the end of the year. Between the two races, Veltcheva also went 17:17 at the Clermont, Florida Parkrun 5K on 18 March 2017, a single-age world record for twelve-year old girls.

Adriana Piekarewicz grabbed second on the women's road 10K list, running 38:03 at the Tallahassee Turkey Trot on 23 November 2017. Katie Sherron and Sheryl Rosen ended the year ranked third and fourth after posting times of 38:49 and 39:28 at the Springtime 10K. Renee Cox ended the year fifth on the women's list on the strength of a 40:28 at the Tallahassee Turkey Trot.


Carrie Seiberlich edged Donnelly Howard for top woman master honors at the Springtime 10K, 41:57 to 41:58. At the end of the year, Seiberlich was seventh on the women's list, her 41:57 the best time by a woman master in Tallahassee during 2017.


Veltcheva's 37:21, by the way, was the fastest women's road 10K in Tallahassee since 2013. Here are the city's top road 10K times, year by year, from 2013 to 2017.

For each of those years, performances meeting these criteria were considered:

• The race has to be in Tallahassee (anywhere in Leon County is fine)
• The race has to be run on a USATF certified course
• The race has to have published results
• I have to see the results

Also meeting those criteria, here are Tallahassee's top marks in the road 10K during 2017, 25 deep for men and 25 deep for women.
