While working on the 2013 list of Tallahassee's top 5K times on certified courses, I started wondering why there wasn't curiosity about the fastest times at other distances. I eventually decided that it's not that no one cares, it's that their curiosity is easily satisfied. For example, do you want to know the fastest marathon ever run in Tallahassee? Look up the past winners of the Tallahassee Marathon. There aren't any other marathon-length races in town. Similarly, if you're wondering about the fastest 10 mile, you'd look at the Gulf Winds Track Club's Ten-Mile Challenge, the only 10 mile in town. There are many different 5K events on the roads of Tallahassee, but there has never been more than one 12K, 20K, half-marathon, 30K, or marathon. Look at the history of those solitary events, and you'll know the city's best times at those distances.
That's not the case with the 10K, though. Ten-kilometer races haven't proliferated like 5K runs, but there has always been more than one or two around. In the Tallahassee area there were four 10K races on USATF certified courses in 2013: the Thomasville Road Baptist Church 10K in March, Gulf Winds Track Club's Springtime 10K in April, the Conley Yellow Jacket Swarm 10K in early November, and GWTC's Tallahassee Turkey Trot 10K in late November.So finding the ten fastest 10K times in 2013 isn't as simple as listing the top ten finishers in the Springtime 10K.
But it isn't impossibly complicated, either. So here are Tallahassee's top 10K performers and their performances for 2013 through the Tallahassee Turkey Trot 10K on 28 November 2013. Unless someone suddenly stages a race on a certified course, these are the final rankings for the year.
