Muddy at Maclay

It's a meet with an identity crisis. This year it was called the "city championship," an odd name for an event that included teams from schools as far flung as Marianna, which isn't even in the same time zone as Tallahassee. A couple of years ago the same meet was billed as the "Big Bend Championship," which was somewhat more accurate, but the name didn't last. The course has always been around the Maclay School campus, but changes from year to year. This year it was a multi-loop affair, with a gesture at being "real" cross country by routing the runners through a mud-filled holding pond. On the other hand, the five-kilometer course also included over a kilometer of running on the Maclay School track, which probably falls outside of the mud-lovers' definition of "real" cross country.

The runners seemed unconcerned with event names or the true meaning of cross country. Those issues certainly weren't plaguing the mind of Maclay's Jana Stolting when she leaped immediately to the front of the field at the start of the high school girls' 5K race. Stolting ate up grass, mud, synthetic running track surface, and dirt indiscriminately to clock 18:59, finishing well ahead of runner-up Stefanie Kurgatt (19:47) of Maclay. The two were joined in the top five by their teammates Shelby Salimone (21:00), Kristen Sweeney (21:44), and Lindsey Sanders (22:29) in scoring a winning fifteen points--the best possible score in high school cross country. Aucilla Christian, the second-place team, was well back with 67 points, just ahead of third-place Florida State University School's 73 points.

The high school boys' 5K wasn't settled as early. The initial leader in that race was North Florida Christian's Daren Evans, who flew through the first quarter-mile in 75 seconds. When Evans's early exuberance had worn off, the lead fell to Dieumy Duclos of Godby, Terrell Bryant of Godby, and Robert Abellera of Florida State. Passing the half-way point in 8:50, Duclos moved out in front for good, winning the race in 17:37. Bryant beat out Abellera for second place, 17:55 to 17:59. The team title, however, went to Maclay School, as the Marauders put four runners in the top ten and beat second-place Godby 38 to 59, with Lincoln a few more points back at 67.

After the first two races had churned up the muddy sections of the course it was time for the middle school two-mile event. Jack Rutledge, runner-up at the Owl Run earlier this season, moved early into the lead. He was unchallenged and ran away from the field to win by over 50 meters in 13:11, with Alex Pittman of Christ Classical Academy second in 13:25. Team honors went to Maclay, scoring 25 points over Florida State's 32. No other schools fielded a full team in the race. In the middle school girls' competition,Kasey James of Wakulla ran 14:21 for the win, finishing well ahead of the battle for second place between Tamani Wilson (14:44) and Caroline Willis (14:46), both of Maclay. Maclay was the only school to field a full girls' team in the race, therefore winning the title with a perfect fifteen points.

For the high schools, the post-season begins the week after this meet, starting with FHSAA district competitions. District 1-1A will be hosted by Maclay on this course, or some muddy variation thereof.

Poole, Bartlett victorious at Holy Comforter

Maclay School's Lindsey Poole covered a three-kilometer course in 13:35 to run away with the girls' race at a middle-school cross-country meet at Tallahassee's Holy Comforter Episcopal School on Thursday, 22 October 2009. Poole finished almost a minute ahead of runner-up Liza Ray, also of Maclay, who ran 14:32. Maclay dominated the girls' race, capturing the first six places and putting all eight of their runners in the top ten.

In the boys 3K race, Bennett Harrell and Jared Grigas of Holy Comforter moved into the lead near the end of the first kilometer. Behind them, however, Cornerstone's Avery Bartlett was moving up through the pack. By the end of the second kilometer Bartlett had closed on Harrell and Grigas. During the third kilometer Bartlett began building his own lead, going on to win the race in 12:39. Harrell was second in 12:50, just ahead of third-place Grigas's 12:51.

Holy Comforter Episcopal School's cross-country course is in a meadow behind the school's campus on Fleischmann Road, formerly a cow pasture on Welaunee Plantation, the same property from which the nearby Miccosukee Greewnway was carved. A shallow ravine cuts the meadow, so runners climb and descend several slopes as they loop around the meadow. There are very few trees so the runners don't get much shade, but spectators can see almost the entire course, especially if they bring a pair of field glasses.

Snyder and Fleming are winners at FSUCares 5K

Aaron Snyder led a field of 363 runners to the finish line at the annual FSUCares 5K on Florida State University's Tallahassee campus on Sunday afternoon, 25 October 2009. Snyder's winning time was 16:22, putting him nearly a quarter mile ahead of runner-up Kyle Harris of Bainbridge, who finished at 17:37. Snyder broke his competition by the end of the first mile, and spent the last two miles of the race building up his lead. Snyder is a former track and cross country runner for Iona College (c/o 2008) and an Oklahoma high school state champion in the 800m and 1600m. The top master finisher was Joel Piotrowski, finishing sixth overall in 18:28.

The class of the women's competition was Mary Catherine Fleming, a former Orlando (Florida) Boone High School (c/o 2008) distance runner. Fleming was 26th overall in 21:18, forty seconds ahead of Alexis Gouldman, the next woman across the finish line. Gouldman was also a distance runner in high school, competing for Gulf Breeze High School (c/o 2008) in northwest Florida. Lisa Cox was the top woman master at 50th overall in 22:57, her third master win in the month of October.

The course started on West Call Street in front of the Florida State University medical school and wandered about the west side of the main university campus, ultimately arriving next to Langford Green. The afternoon was bright, with dry air and a temperature that everyone wants their home to be at. The race is put on by FSUCares, a student organization dedicated to bringing health care to the needy both here and abroad.

Mucchetti and Taylor grab wins at the 2009 Sundberg 5K

After a long hard struggle with Jay Wallace, Steve Mucchetti clocked 16:57 for the win at the eleventh annual Alan Sundberg Memorial 5K in Maclay Gardens State Park on 24 October 2009. Wallace was second and the to master finisher in 17:01. In the women's division the win went to Florida State University sophomore Kara Taylor, who beat out her fellow FSU runner Emily Ness 18:38 to 18:39.

It was a cool, damp morning, and seemed to get cooler as the race progressed. There was, of course, the usual mad dash off of the starting line near Lake Hall, but by the time the dust had settled around half a mile into the race, Mucchetti held a significant lead on the field while being stalked by Wallace and Tony Guillen. Going into the second mile, Guillen faded and was eventually picked off by David Altmaier. In the meantime, Wallace pursued and overtook Mucchetti on the unpaved section of the course on the Lake Overstreet Trail. Climbing the hill up from the Lake Overstreet Trail, Wallace built up a lead on Mucchetti. Wallace was still ahead with less than a mile to go when the pair reached the main road through the park. But Mucchetti made up the ground during the return to Lake Hall and finished the race with a four-second advantage over Wallace. Back in 17:21, Altmaier emerged as best of the rest.

The women's division was even more hotly contested. Kara Taylor led early, but three-fourths of a mile into the race, Emily Ness, Kelsey Scheitlin, and Sheryl Rosen were all within striking distance. Back on the Lake Overstreet Trail during the second mile, Scheitlin passed Ness to move into second, but Ness reclaimed the runner-up position early in the third mile. The runner passed the gardens entrance around two-and-a-half miles with Taylor, Ness, Scheitlin, and Rosen within seconds of each other. From this point, however, Scheitlin and Rosen began to fade, while Taylor and Ness raced back to Lake Hall. It was Taylor over Ness at the finish line, but only by a second. Scheitlin ran 18:59 to hang onto third, with Rosen but a few yards back in 19:04. The top master finisher for the women was Nancy Stedman, 53rd overall in 22:24.

The Sundberg 5K is an annual benefit for the Florida Skin Cancer Foundation in the name of Alan C. Sundberg, Jr., who died of skin cancer in 1998 at the age of 33.

Run, Bike, and...Swing?

"Run, Bike, and Swing for the Cure" was the name of the event that Boot Camps to Go held on 24 October 2009 as a benefit for the Sharon Ewing Walker Breast Health Center of Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. Swing? In America, run-bike-and-swim triathlons are common, and run-bike-and-canoe events are not unheard of. What athletes were swinging that morning at the Industrial Drive location of Boot Camps to Go was kettlebells. To the list of exercise weights including dumbbells and barbells, add the kettlebell. A kettlebell is a heavy lump of metal with a handle attached. Track and field fans will find it reminiscent of the implement used during indoor season for the thirty-five-pound weight throw, but everyone else will look at it and see the profile of a cauldron or a kettle--hence "kettlebell."

"Marathoners have taken a full two minutes off of their times by adding kettlebell exercises to their training," I was assured by Laurel Blackburn of Boot Camps to Go. I neglected to ask whether the marathoners were going from 2:12 to 2:10 or from 5:01 to 4:59.

After an instruction period for novices on how to do kettlebell swings, the athletes started the event. First, they ran a loop of about 0.6 miles around Industrial Drive. After completing that lap, they bicycled around the same loop. After bicycling a lap, it was onto the gym floor for a set of swings with the kettlebell. After you put down the kettlebell, it was out the door to repeat the whole run-bike-swing formula again. The number of run-bike-swing circuits each athlete completed from 11:00am to 11:40am was recorded. The flyer promised "...one of the most intense workouts ever." After a couple of laps, most of the participants looked as if they would agree. And most everyone was there for a workout. You didn't see a whole lot of racing shoes or carbon-fiber-and-gossamer racing bicycles, just good solid equipment that you could build up a sweat with.

By noon everyone had returned to the gym floor for awards. The top team award went to a group of four athletes who accumulated thirteen run-bike-swing laps among themselves. Their teamwork, however, fell short of agreeing on a team name. "Name? I dunno," they shrugged. Cheryl Derstine was the top woman with three laps, and Paul Peavy the top male, also with three laps. At the end of the awards ceremony, Laurel Blackburn presented Judi Taber of the TMH Foundation with a generous check for the Sharon Ewing Walker Center.

Boot Camps to Go plans to make this annual event. Next time I'll show up early enough to learn how to swing a kettlebell.

Wins for Kurgatt and Swain at Panhandle Championships

Maclay School freshman Stefanie Kurgatt outran her teammate, Jana Stolting, 17:48 to 17:54, to win the varsity girls 5K race at the Panhandle Cross Country Championships in Marianna, Florida on Saturday, 24 October 2009. It was Stolting's first loss of the 2009 cross-country season. Although Maclay took the top two spots in the race, Chiles runners Lily Williams (18:09), Carly Thomas (18:22), and Kendall Andrews (19:04) took the next three places plus twelfth and eighteenth to win the team competition with a low score of 42 points, just ahead of runners-up Fort Walton Beach at 50 points. Maclay took third with 62 points.

In the varsity boys 5K race, defending FHSAA-1A state champion and Maclay senior ran a winning time of 15:51, finishing nearly 90 meters ahead of his closest challenger, Gabriel Holguin of Bay. Holguin's time was 16:07. The next three places, though, went to Pensacola Washington runners Ian Bordelon (16:13), Jacob Kotick (16:15), and Thomas Arnold (16:15), leading a charge that gave Washington the team title with 45 points. Second place in the team standings went to Fort Walton Beach, again a bridesmaid with 78 points.

After the Panhandle Championships, less than two weeks of the cross-country season remain before the first District meet in the FHSAA state championship series.

Chase Harris wins 2009 AIDS 5K

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Tallahassee's Tom Brown Park, Chase Harris of outran all comers at the 18 October 2009 AIDS 5K run, held by Big Bend Cares. At 19:16.97, twelve-year-old Harris finished comfortable ahead of runner-up and top master, Jonathan Hunt, who ran 19:32. The top woman finisher was Lynn Masimore of Tallahassee, tenth overall with a time of 23:10.90. Lisa Cox finished as top master at thirteenth overall in 24:17--her second straight weekend in that position after having won top master honors at the FSU Invitational open 5K eight days earlier.

The race more closely resembled a cross-country run than a road race; the runners went twice around a loop that included the paved Goose Pond Trail and some of the park's natural trails through the woods. Big Bend Cares had more than a few course marshals directing the runners, but perhaps they could have used one more--race winner Harris mentioned that he taken a wrong turn along the way.
