Andy Merrill and Harlie Bassitt were tops at the Tortoise

The fourteenth annual Race The Tortoise 5K started in O'Leno State Park on Saturday morning, 9 March 2024, just ahead of the storm sweeping east across North Florida. The stormfront still hadn't arrived when Lake Butler's Andy Merrill crossed the finish line in a wiining 16:47, more than a hundred meters ahead of the next runner. Gainesville marathoner Harlie Bassitt was the first woman in the 5K, coming in sixth overall in 19:01.


David Yinh, a Palm Beach Gardens master runner, placed runner-up to Merrill with a 17:08. Griffin East, an alum of the Canterbury High cross-country team, took third in 17:20.


Lisa Johnson of Gainesville was the first woman master and second female finisher, eleventh overall in 20:22. It was Johnson's third year in a row as the Tortoise 5K's top woman master; she had also been the first overall woman in the 2021 race. Gainesville's Natalie Wright was the third woman and nineteenth overall in 22:38.


193 athletes finished the 2024 Race The Tortoise 5K. The event is a fundraiser for the Friends of O'Leno State Park, who use the proceeds to help provide for the creatures in the park's Nature Center and to help expand the center's exhibits. Timing for the 2024 race was provided by Endurance Sports Timing.

Jake Baldauf and Grace Kelly take the Tortoise in O'Leno

On 3 June 2023 it had been five years since anyone had broken 17:00 at the annual Race The Tortoise 5K. In fact, it had been five years and three months, because for the thirteenth annual 5K, the event went from a March race to a June race. The change in months may have done the trick, because on that Saturday morning in June, Winter Garden, Florida athlete Jake Baldauf went 16:43 for the win. Grace Kelly of Gainesville, Florida was the first woman in the race, running 19:31 on the course through High Springs, Florida's O'Leno State Park and placing seventh overall.


Baldauf's 16:43 put him across the finish line with a 160-meter lead. An alum of the West Orange High cross-country team, Baldauf has more recently been running for Team Florida Track Club Elite while studying at the University of Florida in Gainesville.


Gainesville's Ivan Ruchkin was runner-up in the 5K with a 17:16. At 17:32, Brian Frias of Summerfield, Florida took third. Lake City, Florida athlete Peter Laughlin was the first master runner in the race, placing fifth overall in 19:12.


Lisa Johnson of Gainesville, the 2022 Run For The Tortoise women's champ, was the first woman master in the 2023 race, placing second in the women's standings and eighth overall in 19:54. Ocala, Florida master runner Emma Luetgert was the third woman and thirteenth overall in 20:47.


193 athletes finished the 2023 Race The Tortoise 5K. The event is a fundraiser for the Friends of O'Leno State Park, who use the proceeds to help provide for the creatures in the park's Nature Center and to help expand the center's exhibits. Leonardo Canete and Addie Vaughan tear it up at the Trailblazer Trot

Saturday morning, 12 March 2022, was a cool one in the Florida Panhandle, less like spring and more like the kind of weather you expect during cross-country season. Fortuitously, that was the morning of the fifth annual Trailblazer Trot 5K Cross-Country Race in Ponce De Leon Springs State Park. Tallahassee, Florida master runner Leonardo Canete won the race for the second year in a row, running 18:13 to successfully defend his 2021 title. Eleven-year-old Addie Vaughan of Westville, Florida was the first female finisher, placing seventh overall in 29:25.


Master runner Toby Hauser was the second runner across the finish line, posting a 21:42 on the trails. Josh Hall took third in 23:36.


Westville's Candy Vaughan was the first woman master and second female finisher, coming in tenth overall in 30:42. Vaughan was just a step ahead of Kassyn Pope, third in the women's standings at 30:43. Pope was eleventh overall.


40 athletes finished the 2022 Trailblazer Trot 5K Cross-Country Race. Race Krewe of Auburn, Alabama timed the race.

Michael Rosato and Lisa Johnson make it a Gainesville sweep of the Race The Tortoise 5K

Gainesville, Florida triathlete Michael Rosato went 17:30 for 3.1 miles in O'Leno State Park on Saturday morning, 5 March 2022, winning the twelfth annual Race The Tortoise 5K. Finishing second overall behind Rosato, master runner Lisa Johnson took the women's title with a 20:00.


In a showdown of two athletes from High Springs, Florida, Timothy Guinn edged Soren Brockdorf for the second spot in the men's standings, 21:05 to 21:08. The two runners were third and fourth overall, and Brockdorf was the first male master.


In another close finish, master runner Rahn Huffstutler crossed the finish line fifth overall, just ahead of Mandy Harrell; both runners were clocked at 21:236. Harrell was second in the women's division. Third place on the women's side went to Tierra Dozier, tenth overall in 24:28. Thirteen-year-old Abbey Robinson was the fourth female finisher and thirteenth overall in 24:46. A seventh-grader, Robinson raced for the Ocala Distance Project during the 2021 cross-country season.


203 athletes finished the 2022 Race The Tortoise 5K. Start 2 Finish Race Management timed and scored the race.

Neither Ravi Kumar nor Lara Drondoski ran like a tortoise at the Race The Tortoise 5K

At Race The Tortoise 5K on Saturday morning, 7 March 2020, the athletes in the field found themselves chasing Ravi Kumar, who won the eleventh annual race by more than 250 meters. Kumar ran the 3.1-mile race through Florida's O'Leno State Park in 17:08. In the women's competition, Lara Drondoski and Rebecca Pieters also raced more like hares than like tortoises, finishing just a second apart. Drondoski got the women's title, edging Pieters 19:51 to 19:52. The two athletes were fourth and fifth overall.


Nicholas Barnett came in runner-up to Kumar in 18:04. Barnett is an eighth-grader on the cross-country team at Abraham Lincoln Middle School in nearby Gainesville, Florida. Another Gainesville cross-country runner, Buchholz High sophomore Wrigley Longstreet, took third in 18:37. Soren Brockdorf was the top master runner in the 5K, holding off master runner Rahn Huffstutler 21:38 to 2142. Brockdorf and Huffstutler were seventh and eighth overall.


Jess Morey took third in the women's standings, crossing the finish line eleventh overall in 22:43. Darcie Burde was the fourth woman and fifteenth overall in 23:26. At 23:41, Loretta Engler was the first woman master and fifth female finisher, placing seventeenth overall.


219 athletes finished the 2020 Race The Tortoise 5K. Start 2 Finish Race Management timed and scored the race.

Cody Pezent and Constance Thomas win big at Little River

Georgia's Reed Bingham State Park isn't in any town. It's far enough off the beaten path that it's on the border separating Colquitt County and Cook County. But Reed Bingham is closest to Adel, Georgia. And in the park on Saturday morning, 20 April 2019, it was an athlete from Adel, Cody Pezent, who won the Little River Run 5K. Runner-up in the 2018 edition of the annual race, Pezent ran 19:42 to take first in 2019. Nashville, Georgia master runner Constance Thomas was the first woman in the race, placing eleventh overall in 27:01.


Aidan Evans, an eight-grader and cross-country runner for Tift Middle Schools, finished second in the 5K, running 22:35. Tom Thomas of Nashville, Georgia was third in 22:56. Karl Brown of Valdosta, Georgia was the first master runner in the race, placing fourth overall in 24:20.


Adel master runner Angela Pezent placed second in the women's standings and twelfth overall in 27:21. Catherine Jones, a master runner from Thomasville, Georgia, was the third woman and thirteenth overall in 27:58.


29 athletes finished the 2019 Little River Run 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.

Ivan De La Cruz caps track season by winning the Coach Post 10K

In 2017, Ivan De La Cruz ran 42:44 in the fourth annual Coach Post 10K, finishing second to Ezra Swanson. In 2018, De La Cruz ran 40:38 in the fifth annual Coach Post 10K, finishing second to David Shearon. On Saturday morning, 13 April 2019, De La Cruz cracked 40:00 in the sixth annual Coach Post 10K, lowering his time to 39:51. This time the the Mosley High cross-country runner was second to no one, winning the 6.2-mile race around Saint Andrews State Park by close to 800 meters. Mary-Rosalyn Taylor was the first woman in the race, placing third overall in 44:56.


The day before the Coach Post Run, De La Cruz had finished up his junior year track season, running a 5:05.70 1600 and a 2:07.66 800 at the 3A District 2 Championships. When the season is over, though, if you're a runner then you keep running. De La Cruz certainly demonstrated that he was a runner at the Coach Post race. Mohamed Abdeldaim took second in the 10K, running 43:11. Felix Chen placed third in the men's standings and fourth overall in 45:32. Jason Dence was the first master runner in the race, just edged for fifth overall by Chad Prescott, 46:48 to 46:49.


Heather Salyars finished runner-up on the women's side, coming in tenth overall in 49:39. Improving on her 2018 Coach Post 10K mark of 51:08, Mariia Solomonova ran 50:45 to place third in the women's standings and thirteenth overall. Lynne Carlson was the first woman master and fifth female finisher, nineteenth overall in 52:39.


52 athletes finished the 2019 Coach Post 10K.

While Ivan De La Cruz was finishing runner-up in the Coach Post 10K in 2017 and 2018, Nicolas Waddell was right behind him, placing third both years. For the 2019 Coach Post, Waddell decided to try the 5K race. He won the shorter event, running 19:52. Tom Dever was the first master runner in the 5K, second overall in 20:06. Jeffery Bylsma took third in 23:22.


Panama City, Florida's Ashley Worl was the 2019 Coach Post 5K women's champ, crossing the finish line thirteenth overall in 26:51. Danielle Cureton was the second woman and fifteenth overall in 27:17, Michelle Waldrip the third woman and sixteenth overall in 27:35. Eve Phillips was the first woman master and fourth female finisher in the 5K, eighteenth overall in 27:53.


121 athletes finished the 2019 Coach Post 5K. Both the 10K and the 5K were chip-timed by Alta Vista Sports.

Reid Hatcher edges Rory Claussen for the Trailblazer Trot title

There's a disagreement about the Apalachee Regional Park Cross-Country Course. Some people say that ARPXC the best place to run cross-country in Florida. Others reject this claim. They say that it's the best place to run cross-country in the United States.


One of the strengths of cross-country as a sport is that you can run anywhere. So you don't have to race at Apalachee Regional Park; you could race at, say, Ponce de Leon Springs State Park near Bonifay, Florida. You don't have to race during autumn, cross-country season, either. You could run in the spring, instead. Perhaps on Saturday morning, 9 March 2019.


That's exactly what nearly 50 athletes did at the second annual Trailblazer Trot 5K Cross-Country Race, an event sponsored by the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office. Reid Hatcher and Rory Claussen were the fastest athletes in the field, with Hatcher eking out the win over Claussen 19:36 to 19:37. Hatcher was the first overall male and Claussen the first overall female.


Steven Bratten took the runner-up spot in the men's standings, finishing third overall in 21:41 and taking first in the men's 15 to 25 age group. Donal Marsh was the third male finisher, placing fourth overall in 22:48. Marsh was the top finisher in the men's 36 to 45 age group.


Amy Jones was the second overall woman and first in the age group for women 15 to 25, placing fourteenth overall in 26:15. Michelle Huskey Smith was the top woman master and third female finisher, fifteenth overall in 26:31.


49 athletes endured the sand, narrow bridges, and other challenges of the Ponce de Leon Springs State Park paths to finish the 2019 Trailblazer Trot 5K Cross-Country Race.


Hats off to Joe Edgecombe for tracking down the results of the race for me. Thanks, Joe! Joe ran 26:04 in the race, placing twelfth overall and finishing just one spot out of the men's top ten.

Hutson Rapier and Courtney Rouse weren't just terrapin at the Race The Tortoise 5K

It took eleven years, but the tenth annual Race The Tortoise 5K came to Florida's O'Leno State Park on Saturday morning, 2 March 2019, hosted by the friends of O'Leno State Park. Hutson Rapier of nearby Gainesville, Florida won the landmark race, going 17:03. Courtney Rouse, another Gainesville athlete, was the first woman in the race, placing fifth overall in 19:35.


Just 30 meters behind Rapier, Rich Smith was the first master runner in the 5K. The overall runner-up, Smith ran 17:10. Kenneth Harland, an alumnus of the Mandarin High cross-country team and a first-year student at the University of Florida, took third in 17:23.


Gainesville's Angela Nadler placed second in the women's standings and seventh overall, running 19:57. Nadler improved over a minute on her performance in the 2018 Race The Tortoise, where she had run 21:09, finishing seventh in the women's division. Katie Avery of Gainesville was the third woman and thirteenth overall in 21:48. Victoria Wolpert was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, 24th overall in 24:38.


239 athletes finished the 2019 Race The Tortoise 5K. The event is a fundraiser for the Friends of O'Leno State Park, who use the proceeds to help provide for the creatures in the park's Nature Center and to help expand the center's exhibits. Timing for the 2019 race was provided by Milestone Race Authority of Jacksonville, Florida.

Helms and Winkler win by moonlight in Kolomoki

Along the eastern seaboard of the United States, there was a full moon on Sunday evening, 29 April 2018, peaking exactly at 8:58 PM. However, according to Jesse Emspak at Space.com, "For casual observers, the moon looks pretty full a day before and a day after the actual full phase." So the moon looked "pretty full" at 9:00 PM on Saturday, 28 April 2018, when the Full Moon Glow Run started near Blakely, Georgia in Kolomoki Mounds State Park. David Helms won the race by just over 30 meters, running 19:44. Blakely master runner Margaret Winkler was the first woman in the race, placing sixth overall in 27:06. It was Winkler's third Moon Run women's title; she had also won the race in 2013 and 2014.


Mikhael Crispen, an eighth-grader on the Early County cross-country team, finished a close runner-up to Helms, running 19:52. David Forrester of Headland, Alabama took third in 23:24.


Jennifer Brown placed second in the women's standings and thirteenth overall in 31:06. Joanna Braswell was the third woman and fourteenth overal in 31:28.

Fulp and Lohr race through two counties to win the Little River 5K

The Little River Run 5K is run entirely inside Georgia's Reed Bingham State Park, but the race still takes place in two different counties. The park straddles the Little River, which marks the boundary between Colquitt County and Cook County. So the race starts in Colquitt County, but most of the running is done in Cook County before the runners return to the west side of the river and finish back in Colquitt County.


Cook and Colquitt had to each take a back seat to another county, though, on Saturday morning, 21 April 2018, when Lowndes County resident Cavan Fulp won the Little River Run 5K in 20:25. Fulp, a student at Lowndes High, lives in Hahira, Georgia. Melanie Lohr, a master runner from Elkton, Florida, won the women's title, placing sixth overall in 25:48.


Finishing less than 30 meters behind Fulp, Cook High cross-country runner Cody Pezent took second in the race, running 20:31. Daniel Carver of Hahira was third in 21:35.


Adel, Georgia master runner Angela Pezent was the second woman and eighth overall in 26:35. Langley Wooten, a frosh-year member of the Thomas County Central cross-country team, was third in the women's standings and twelfth overall in 27:54.


Allen Wooten of Thomasville, Georgia was the first male master runner in the race, placing eighth in the men's standings and tenth overall in 26:52.


40 athletes finished the 2018 Little River Run 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.

A repeat win for Shearon and a record run for Nelson at the Coach Post 10K

Each April, the Coach Post Run takes places near Panama City Beach, Florida in Saint Andrews State Park. Obviously, the race isn't named after David Shearon. Nevertheless, the master runner from Panama City Beach manages to frequently put his name on it. Most recently, on Saturday morning, 14 April 2018, Shearon ran 40:13 in the fifth annual Coach Post 10K, winning the race for the third time in five years. Panama City, Florida master runner Jennifer Nelson won the women's title, setting a new course record for women of 43:02 and placing fourth overall.


Ivan De La Cruz, a sophomore on the Mosley High cross-country team, placed second in the 10K, running 40:38. It was a better than two-minute improvement on the 42:44 that he had run in the 2017 race, where De La Cruz also placed second. Just two days before this latest effort, De La Cruz had ended his high school track season with a 5:07.31/11:33.46 double in the 1600/3200 at the District 2 meet. Nicolas Waddell, a Mowat Middle School sixth-grader who has been spotted racing cross-country in a Rutherford High uniform, placed third in 42:43.


Port Saint Joe, Florida master runner Dana Black was second in the women's standings and fifth overall in 45:59. Another master runner, Amy Helms of Panama City Beach, was the third woman and tenth overall in 50:18.

The Coach Post 10K course makes two loops of Saint Andrews State Park; for athletes who only want to do one loop there's the Coach Post 5K. Kaden Jones won the shorter race, running 19:33. Jones is a frosh-year runner on the Mosley High cross-country team. Like 10K runner-up De La Cruz, Jones finished up his high school track season at the District 2 meet two days before the Coach Post Run. Jones also doubled at that meet, running 5:04.52 in the 1600 and 2:09.06 in the 800. Andrew Bahati of Lynn Haven, Florida took second in the 5K, running 22:39. Joseph Cloutier was the first master runner in the race, placing third overall in 23:47.


Sanford, Florida athlete Zanetta Barnes was the first woman in the 5K, coming in twelfth overall in 26:17. Allison Blomquist of Panama City was second in the women's standings and sixteenth overall in 27:22. Danielle Cureton was the third woman and eighteenth overall in 27:55. Heather Webb of Sterling, Virginia was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, nineteenth overall in 28:05.


136 athletes finished the 2018 Coach Post 5K. Both the 10K and the 5K were chip-timed by Alta Vista Sports.

Molosky and Mathis win through 50K of river bluffs and rain showers at Draggin' Tail

It isn't the case that weather never affects the Draggin' Trail Ultra Trail Challenge. Why, as recently as 2009, the race had to be delayed for a month because of wet conditions. Of course, those wet conditions were that the Apalachicola River had risen out of its banks, covering a great deal of Florida's Torreya State Park, its trails, and the race course with several fathoms of floodwaters. For anything less severe, the race has always gone on as scheduled.


So the eleventh annual Draggin' Tail Ultra Challenge, the 50K as well as the 25K, went on as scheduled on Saturday morning, 7 April 2018, even though the forecast called for heavy rains and high winds. Tallahassee, Florida's Vince Molosky won the 50K for the ninth time in eleven years, running 5:13:30. Verity Mathis of Gainesville, Florida was the first woman in the 50K, pacing fourth overall in 6:47:05.


Despite the warnings of meteorologists, the rain didn't really start in earnest till after 11:00 AM, by which time the race was well under way and Molosky was nearly finished. In the history of the Draggin' Tail Ultra Challenge, Molosky is one of the few runners to have finished the in under five hours; at the 2018 race he was the only athlete to run it in less than six hours. Kenneth Hart took second place in the 50K, running 6:05.28. Jason Seitz was the first master runner and third overall in 6:46:22.


Heather Davenport was the first woman master and second female finisher, eighth overall in 7:24:59. Master runner Paula Lunt was third in the women's standings and tenth overall in 7:43:04.


Fourteen athletes finished the 2018 Torreya Draggin' Tail Ultra Trail Challenge 50K.

Matthew Rowan of Quincy, Florida was the top master runner in the 25K, finishing runner-up in 2:39:12. Ken Thrasher, the first master runner in the 2017 Draggin' Tail 25K, placed third in the shorter race in 2018, running 2:48:27.


Tallahassee master runner Monica Judd won the women's title in the 25K for the second year in a row, finishing eighth overall in 3:05:17. Judy Alexander, another Tallahassee master runner, took second in the women's standings and eleventh overall in 3:11:21. Lacey Randolph was the third woman and seventeenth overall in 3:27:24.
