Helms and Winkler win by moonlight in Kolomoki

Along the eastern seaboard of the United States, there was a full moon on Sunday evening, 29 April 2018, peaking exactly at 8:58 PM. However, according to Jesse Emspak at Space.com, "For casual observers, the moon looks pretty full a day before and a day after the actual full phase." So the moon looked "pretty full" at 9:00 PM on Saturday, 28 April 2018, when the Full Moon Glow Run started near Blakely, Georgia in Kolomoki Mounds State Park. David Helms won the race by just over 30 meters, running 19:44. Blakely master runner Margaret Winkler was the first woman in the race, placing sixth overall in 27:06. It was Winkler's third Moon Run women's title; she had also won the race in 2013 and 2014.


Mikhael Crispen, an eighth-grader on the Early County cross-country team, finished a close runner-up to Helms, running 19:52. David Forrester of Headland, Alabama took third in 23:24.


Jennifer Brown placed second in the women's standings and thirteenth overall in 31:06. Joanna Braswell was the third woman and fourteenth overal in 31:28.

Gibson and Winkler repeat at Crowdis

In Blakely, Georgia, about 1400 meters into the 2015 Dr. James H. Crowdis 5K, there was a water table set up on Wyatt Jarrett Street. The race is out and back, so the athletes got to visit the table twice. Well after the leaders had gone by for the first time, one of the runners called out to the volunteers staffing the water stop.


"Those boys got out fast today!" he said.


"One of them did, anyway," was the response.


That one was Patrick Whitehead, who was leading by almost half a minute going by the water station. At the end of the race, though, it was Donalsonville, Georgia, master runner Myles Gibson who crossed finish line first, running 18:10 and winning the race for the second year in a row.


"I wasn't supposed to win today," said Gibson. "The guy in front of me was way ahead."


Nevertheless, win Gibson did. On the women's side master runner Margaret Winkler of Blakely was also a repeat winner, taking the women's title in 23:02.


The 19th Crowdis 5K started on River Street in front of Blakely First United Methodist Church Just after 8:15 AM. There was no sign that there would be a repeat of the rainstorm during the 2014 race; the sky was clear and the day promised to be hot. Patrick Whitehead, wearing the colors of the Albany, Georgia, Good Life City Runners, took the lead almost immediately. Bainbridge High freshman Caleb Harris trailed in second, followed by Good Life City Runner Arnoldo DeJesus and Crowdis 5K defending champion Myles Gibson.


"I didn't start racing till after the first mile," explained Gibson. "I felt really good after that."


There was a big surprise in the race just past the mile mark as Gibson started to close on Harris and DeJesus just past the mile mark. Whitehead dropped out.


"He stopped and took his shoe off," recalled Gibson.


A foot injury had sidelined the leader. DeJesus passed Harris, becoming the new pacemaker. Gibson shadowed DeJesus. At the halfway point and turnaround on Westview Drive, Gibson moved into the lead. DeJesus steadily lost ground on Gibson until the runners turned back onto College Street. There, with over 600 meters from the finish line back at the Church, DeJesus began to close. But ultimately Gibson held on the last three seconds of his lead, enough to beat DeJesus's charge and win the race in 18:10.


"It's my best time in three years, so I'm really happy," said Gibson.


DeJesus was second in 18:13. Caleb Harris placed third in 18:48, while Bainbridge master runner Greg Waddell was fourth in 19:50.


In addition to running his fastest 5K time since 2012, Gibson also ran two seconds faster than his winning time in the 2014 Crowdis 5K. Women's winner Margaret Winkler also bettered her Crowdis Run time from a year ago. In successfully defending her title, Winkler finished 19th overall in 23:02, significantly faster than her winning time of 23:24 in the previous year's race. Truett-McConnell College cross-country runner Lauren Tosky was second in the women's standings, placing 24th overall in 24:35. Megan Helms of Headland, Alabama, was the third female finisher, 28th overall in 25:17. Enterprise High cross country runner Annabelle Warner edged master runner Jill Wofsey for the fourth women's spot, 26:09 to 26:10.


107 athletes finished the 19th Crowdis 5K, the most since the race was revived in 2012. You'd have to go back to 1991 to find a larger Crowdis Run. Another throwback to the race's original years of 1981 to 1995 was USATF course certification. The Crowdis 5K course had been certified as accurate in 1988; 2015 was the first year that the new course was also certified. Look for another Crowdis 5K on the USATF certified course #GA15001WC in July of 2016.

Cushing and Winkler are super even if the Moon isn't

Several sources have annointed the full Moon of 10 August 2014 as a supermoon. This means that the Moon is full near the time that it is also closest to Earth (perigee). Closest is relative, though, the Moon will still be 221,765 miles away. The supermoon will not cause earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, skunky beer, or other natural disasters. It has been shown, though, that the supermoon causes athletes to race around during the night in Kolomoki Mounds State Park, near Blakely, Georgia. This was demonstrated conclusively on Saturday, 9 August 2014, at the Kolomoki Mounds Super Moon Run 5K.


The fastest of the moonstruck runners was Eli Cushing, a distance specialist at Early County High. Cushing ran 22:57 for the 3.1-mile road race, finishing nine seconds ahead of the 23:06 posted by runner-up and top master Rich Cellino. Close behind Cellino was Early County High junior Caleb Brown, third overall in 23:10. Early County frosh Brandon Womble took fourth in 23:16, and Early County junior Will Winkler was fifth in 23:33. Cushing, Brown, Womble, and Winkler could all be running in Kolomoki Mounds State Park again this fall, but off pavement and in the daylight for the Early County Bulldogs cross-country team.


Blakely master runner Margaret Winkler repeated as the women's champ in the 5K Moon Run, finishing seventh overall in 24:08. 11-year-old Meg Houston was also a returning runner from the 2013 race; in the 2014 Moon Run Houston ran 28:15 to finish 16th overall and runner-up in the women's standings. Kristen Hudgins took third on the women's side, 19th overall in 28:59.


71 athletes finished the 2014 Kolomoki Mounds Super Moon Run 5K, and another 42 completed an earlier one-mile fun run.

The Crowdis Run continues with wins by Gibson and Winkler

Over two decades ago in Blakely, Georgia, Donalsonville's Myles Gibson won the 1993 James H. Crowdis 5K. It was the thirteenth annual Crowdis, and anyone superstitious about the number thirteen will be interested to know that thirteenth race had to be rescheduled because of a severe winter storm. Sporting events don't often get snowed out in south Georgia. The thirteenth Crowdis 5K wasn't unlucky for Gibson, though, and neither was the eighteenth race on 19 July 2014 where the master runner picked up his second Crowdis title with an 18:12 victory. The Crowdis 5K had been on hiatus from 1996 to 2011 before being revived as an annual event in 2012; Gibson is the first runner to have won both the original race and the revived one. Blakely athlete Margaret Scarborough had also run in the original Crowdis 5K during the 1990s, finishing high in the women's standings but never at the top. As master runner Margaret Winkler, though, she won the women's division at the 2014 Crowdis, placing 16th overall in 23:24. It was the largest Crowdis 5K since the race's revival, with 103 finishers.


The race started just after 8:15 AM from in front of Blakely First United Methodist Church. The runners were sent on their way with a countdown by race director Tony Gilbert, the winner of the first James H. Crowdis 5K in 1981. Myles Gibson was out in front after the first 800 meters, with Bainbridge High runner Caleb Harris a few steps back with Ed Shattles. Davy Helms trailed Harris and Shattles. When the runners turned around at the halfway point to head back to the church, Gibson had a lead of nearly half a minute. Harris was still in second, but Helms had moved up to run with Harris and Shattles.


1200 meters from the finish line Gibson was still running away from the rest of the field Meanwhile Helms had dropped Shattles and Harris to take over second. Chasing Helms, Shattles had taken sole possession of third, leaving Harris behind in fourth.


Rain started to fall as Gibson approached the finish line. The Donalsonville master runner barely had time to get damp, though, before he raced home first in 18:12. When Davy Helms claimed second in 19:23, the pavement was just starting to get moist. Ed Shattles finished third in 19:42 and Caleb Harris fourth in 20:07 before the rain got heavy. It was a full shower, though, when Kurt Anthony placed fifth in 20:37.


Margaret Winkler got ahead of the women's field early and widened the margin steadily throughout the race on her way to her 23:24 win. Bonifay master runner Val Lichner was second in the women's standings for the second year in a row, placing 18th overall in 24:29. Likewise, Jill Wofsey had been third behind Lichner in 2013 and was again in 2014; Wofsey was 20th overall in 24:47.

Wildest hog of the herd, Morenus sets 15K record

Here in 21st century America, unique among the nations of the world, you can experience the frustration of trying to fit a 12mm socket over a 1/2-inch nut. The 13mm just isn't tight enough, you know? We never have warmed up to the metric system.


Except in athletics, that is. As fond as I am of miles and furlongs, road racing switched over to metric distances decades and decades ago. Years before World War II, back when the Amateur Athletic Union was running the show, all the national title races became metric. The 20-mile national championship became the 30K national championship, the 15-mile race became a 25K race, and the 10-mile title event was replaced with a 15K.


There are still non-metric races around, though, some of them quite prominent. For instance, the annual Army Ten-Miler in Washington, DC attracts tens of thousands of runners each year, none of whom seem put out because the race is 16.09 kilometers instead of some nice, round metric distance.


On 20 October 2013 Brian Morenus was at the 2013 Army Ten-Miler, where he ran 54:43 for the Fort Rucker team. On 25 January 2014 the West Point alumnus was back in Alabama at Dothan's Hog Wild 15K. You know, 15K, the slightly shorter metric sibling of the ten-mile run. Morenus didn't seem to mind the missing 1.09 kilometers at all, though. He won the race by more than two kilometers, setting a new Hog Wild record of 51:54, absolutely obliterating Sean Kent's old standard of 56:34.


For folks like me, whose high school track was 440 yards instead of 400 meters, 15K is right about 9.3 miles.


Ben McLain of Conyers, Georgia, finished runner-up in the 2014 Hog Wild 15K, running 60:46. Myles Gibson of Donalsonville, Georgia, was right behind McLain in third place at 60:52. It was the second year in a row that Gibson finished as top master in the Hog Wild. On the women's side, Margaret Winkler of Blakely, Georgia, edged out Dothan's own Carolyn Houston 74:04 to 74:24 to finish as both top woman and top master woman. Winkler and Houston were 27th and 29th overall.

Dothan's Hog Wild also includes a 5K option. Perry Waddell of Bainbridge, Georgia, is more than familiar with that metric distance, having just spent autumn running 5K races for the Bainbridge High School cross-country team. That experience didn't seem to hurt Waddell at all; he won the Hog Wild 5K in 19:38. Katherine Houle, another West Point grad stationed at Fort Rucker, was the fastest woman in the 5K, finishing fifth overall in 22:55. Eric Dueno of Havana, Florida, was the first master runner, placing seventh overall in 23:00. Bonifay, Florida, runner Val Lichner was the top woman master and second woman finisher in the shorter race, coming in 11th overall in 24:07.

Pate and Winkler conquer Kolomoki

Saturday, 17 August 2013 was a busy one for Dale Pate. That morning, the Worth County High School senior was racing with his school's cross-country team in Americus, Georgia, where he placed third in the Panther Prowl Invitational, running 18:18. In the evening Pate was outside Blakely, Georgia at Kolomoki Mounds State Park, where he won the inaugural Kolomoki Mounds Moon Run 5K. Pate's time for the 3.1-mile race was 19:36, putting him not quite 200 meters ahead of the runner-up, Jim Fenn. Fenn, who was also the top master runner in the race, ran 20:16. In fifth place overall at 23:20 was the first female finisher, Margaret Winkler of Blakely. Jennifer Brown was the first female master, placing 21st overall in 26:51.


Kolomoki Mounds State Park has been the site of more than a few cross-country races over the years, but the Moon Run was a road race, with an out-and-back course on the main park road, going from the museum to just past the swimming pool before returning. Although the moon that the race was named after was less than four days from being full, it was not much in evidence due to overcast skies that had dumped inches of rain on the region during the day. The rain had kept temperatures down, though, and inclement weather hadn't prevented 119 athletes from making it to the park to finish the 5K.
