Helms and Winkler win by moonlight in Kolomoki

Along the eastern seaboard of the United States, there was a full moon on Sunday evening, 29 April 2018, peaking exactly at 8:58 PM. However, according to Jesse Emspak at Space.com, "For casual observers, the moon looks pretty full a day before and a day after the actual full phase." So the moon looked "pretty full" at 9:00 PM on Saturday, 28 April 2018, when the Full Moon Glow Run started near Blakely, Georgia in Kolomoki Mounds State Park. David Helms won the race by just over 30 meters, running 19:44. Blakely master runner Margaret Winkler was the first woman in the race, placing sixth overall in 27:06. It was Winkler's third Moon Run women's title; she had also won the race in 2013 and 2014.

Mikhael Crispen, an eighth-grader on the Early County cross-country team, finished a close runner-up to Helms, running 19:52. David Forrester of Headland, Alabama took third in 23:24.

Jennifer Brown placed second in the women's standings and thirteenth overall in 31:06. Joanna Braswell was the third woman and fourteenth overal in 31:28.

41 athletes finished the 2018 Kolomoki Mounds Full Moon Glow Run 5K.

Cushing and Winkler are super even if the Moon isn't

Several sources have annointed the full Moon of 10 August 2014 as a supermoon. This means that the Moon is full near the time that it is also closest to Earth (perigee). Closest is relative, though, the Moon will still be 221,765 miles away. The supermoon will not cause earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, skunky beer, or other natural disasters. It has been shown, though, that the supermoon causes athletes to race around during the night in Kolomoki Mounds State Park, near Blakely, Georgia. This was demonstrated conclusively on Saturday, 9 August 2014, at the Kolomoki Mounds Super Moon Run 5K.

The fastest of the moonstruck runners was Eli Cushing, a distance specialist at Early County High. Cushing ran 22:57 for the 3.1-mile road race, finishing nine seconds ahead of the 23:06 posted by runner-up and top master Rich Cellino. Close behind Cellino was Early County High junior Caleb Brown, third overall in 23:10. Early County frosh Brandon Womble took fourth in 23:16, and Early County junior Will Winkler was fifth in 23:33. Cushing, Brown, Womble, and Winkler could all be running in Kolomoki Mounds State Park again this fall, but off pavement and in the daylight for the Early County Bulldogs cross-country team.

Blakely master runner Margaret Winkler repeated as the women's champ in the 5K Moon Run, finishing seventh overall in 24:08. 11-year-old Meg Houston was also a returning runner from the 2013 race; in the 2014 Moon Run Houston ran 28:15 to finish 16th overall and runner-up in the women's standings. Kristen Hudgins took third on the women's side, 19th overall in 28:59.

71 athletes finished the 2014 Kolomoki Mounds Super Moon Run 5K, and another 42 completed an earlier one-mile fun run.

Ancient mounds and young runners at Kolomoki

Travet WitherspoonThe home cross-country course of Early County High School in Blakely, Georgia is probably the oldest in the state. The Bobcats race at Kolomoki Mounds State Park, which archaeologists have concluded was first inhabited 3,000 years ago. The temple mound complex in the park is only about half that age, but that's still pretty old. Obviously, the Bobcats haven't been running there all that time, but the mounds still make an impressive background for athletics--it's like running by Stonehenge, or the Pyramids, or the Athenian Parthenon. And it also doesn't take much imagination to picture native American races around the plaza in some bygone century.

On Tuesday morning, 29 October 2013, though, it was a more contemporary group of athletes competing in the shadows of the mounds when Early County hosted the GHSA Region 1-AA cross-country championships.

Rachel SmithRacing opened at 10:30 AM with the girls' 5K race. Thomasville High senior Rachel Smith led the 41 athletes from six school away from park headquarters and out onto the plaza. The defending Region 1 champion, Smith's lead went unchallenged throughout the 3.1-mile run, and she won her second straight regional title in 21:05. Berrien County junior Emily Boyd was second in 21:46, and Pelham freshman Monica Webb took third in 22:33. After that it was all Thomasville, with Rebekah Smith (4th, 22:45), Jacara Hayes (5th, 22:57), Mareike Haaren (6th, 23:08), and Rebecca-Jane White (7th, 23:30) giving the Bulldogs a team total of 23 points and their sixth Region 1 win in the past six years. Pelham was second with 54 points, Berrien County third with 74, and Cook County fourth with 101. The top four teams advanced to the GHSA state championships in Carrollton on 9 November 2013. For everyone else, the season was over.

Guthrie EdwardsThe boys' 5K followed at 11:00 AM. Once again it was a defending champion taking the lead, as Pelham senior Guthrie Edwards charged to the front. Thomasville's Will White led the pursuit, and by the halfway mark Travet Witherspoon of Thomasville had moved into third. Those three athletes held their positions through the second half of the race, and Edwards won his second straight region title, running 17:12. White was runner-up in 17:30, and Witherspoon placed third in 18:20. Edwards and Witherspoon were soon joined by Thomasville runners Andrew Jackson (4th, 18:37), Ian Ward (7th, 18:44), and Neil White (9th, 19:18), giving the Bulldogs the Region 1 team title with a mathematically unbeatable score of 25 points. The win qualified Thomasville for the state championships. The other qualifiers were Berrien County (second with 72 points), Cook County (third with 88 points), and Fitzgerald (fourth with 103 points). Pelham's Edwards qualified as an individual. The rest of the field would have to wait till next year.
