Hot times on a cool day for Crowdis 5K winners Walker Elrod and Gabriella Baker

Dr. Crowdis RunSince the Crowdis 5K was revived in 2012, no athlete has broken 17:00 in Blakely, Georgia's oldest road race. That changed in a single morning. Walker Elrod of Bainbrdige, Georgia led a fast field through the streets of Blakely on Saturday, 3 February 2024, winning the 2024 Crowdis in 16:29. Gabriella Barker of Dothan, Alabama was the first woman in the race, placing fifteenth overall in 20:34.


2024 also marked the elimination of the Crowdis 10K. The Crowdis had been a 5K race since it was first run in 1981. In 2017 a 10K was added to the annual program. Dr. Patrick Whitehead, an Albany State University professor of psychology, had won the last 5K-only Crowdis in 2016, then gone on to win the Crowdis 10K in 2017, 2018, and 2022. With the elimination of the 10K in 2024, Whitehead was back racing the shorter distance. Tallahassee, Florida master runner Michael Martinez, the 2019 Crowdis 5K champion, was also in the 2024 field; as was Donalsonville, Georgia's Myles Gibson--the Crowdis 5K winner in 1993, 2014, and 2015. But the Crowdis veterans were up against a corps of youth.


Leading that youth movement was the race winner, Walker Elrod, a sophomore-year cross-country runner at Grace Christian Academy. The runner-up, Rush Hatcher, ran 16:43, joining Elrod in breaking 17:00. Hatcher is a sophomore on the Worth County High cross-country team. Wesley Warren, a frosh on the Brookwood School cross-country squad, took third in 17:09. The next two athletes across the line were likewise high school harriers--Crosspointe Academy senior Graham Harrod (4th, 17:23) and Tift County High sophomore Owen Davies (5th, 17:51).


The stream of young distance runners was finally interrupted by the first master runner in the race, Russell Coleman, who placed sixth in 17:59. Coleman had won the Crowdis 10K in 2020 and 2023. As for the other past champions, Dr. Whitehead was seventh in 18:10, Martinez was tenth in 19:47, and Gibson thirteenth in 20:28.


The women's division was also dominated by high school cross-country runners, starting with first-place female Gabriella Baker, a junior on the Dothan High team. Emmalee Johnson was runner-up to Baker on the women's side, placing seventeenth overall in 22:09. Johnson is a junior at Southwest Georgia Academy. Kali Nicholson, the third woman and twentieth overall in 22:36, is a junior on Lee County High's cross-country squad. Fourth, fifth, and sixth for the women were also ran cross-country for their school--Seminole County junior Geisha Smith (22nd, 23:01), Baconton sixth-grader Madison Miracle (24th, 23:09), and Grace Christian Academy frosh Tatiana Smith (25th, 23:09).


Carolyn Houston of Dothan was the first woman master and the seventh female finisher, 27th overall in 23:54. Houston had been the first woman in the 2018 Crowdis 5K as well as the 2021 and 2023 Crowdis 10K races.


77 athletes finished the 2024 Crowdis 5K.

Summer rules, and so do Samuel Hinga and Sharon Sason at Another Crowdis Run

Crowdis Run bannerTwo Doctor Crowdis Runs in Blakely, Georgia during 2021? Was it a compensation for 1996 to 2011 when the race wasn't held at all? Was it an anomaly due to the COVID-19 pandemic? Whatever the reasoning, Another Doctor Crowdis 5K was contested on the streets of Blakely on Saturday morning, 31 July 2021, and Samuel Hinga outkicked Walker Elrod for first, 19:41 to 19:42. Sharon Sason was the winning woman, placing sixth overall in 22:33.


The Doctor James Crowdis Run goes back to 1981. Since 2017 it has been a January race, but it was held in July from 2012 to 2016, so there's precedent for a summer Crowdis. Of course, Crowdis races has also been held in March, May, and September, so the calendar is clearly no obstacle to the athletes of Blakely.


Neither the calendar nor southwest Georgia's hot and sticky July weather were obstacles to hard racing between Samuel Hinga and Walker Elrod. Hinga couldn't entirely shake off Elrod, a thirteen-year-old from Bainbridge, Georgia, but he did manage to make it across the finish line at Blakely United Methodist Church a couple of steps ahead of the youngster in a winning 19:41. Elrod was a close second in 19:42. Both Hinga and Elrod had raced the Crowdis 10K on a much cooler morning, 9 January 2021, where Hinga had taken third in 40:01 and Elrod fifth in 42:25.

Landon Watts, a senior on the Bainbridge High cross-country team, was third in 19:57. Julio Garcia was the first master runner in the 5K, placing fourth overall in 21:09.


Hinga had a close race with Elrod, but in the women's competition Sharon Sason had no need to look back. And if she had she wouldn't have seen anyone--Sason's winning 22:33 put her more than 800 meters ahead of the next woman. Stephanie Odom was the first woman master in the race and the second female finisher, twelfth overall in 26:59. Patty Hamilton took third in the women's standings, placing sixteenth overall in 31:53.

Russell Coleman and Anna Haberzettl lead a mob of master runners at Crowdis

2018 Dr. James H. Crowdis Run 10K and 5K
On the streets of Blakely, Georgia on Saturday morning, 11 January 2020, the spotlight was on master runners. In the 10K race at the 24th annual Dr. James H. Crowdis Run, nearly every athlete in the entire field were master runners. That included the overall winner, Russell Coleman, who covered the 6.2-mile course in 39:02. Anna Haberzettl, the women's champ, was likewise a master runner. Haberzettl finished the 10K third overall in 46:06.


Donalsonville, Georgia master runner Myles Gibson took second in the 10K for the third year in a row, running 41:16. Although Gibson has never won the Crowdis 10K, he won the Crowdis 5K three times back when the shorter race was the only race offered at the event, logging victories in 1993, 2014, and 2015. Bainbridge, Georgia master runner David Braswell placed third in the men's standings, coming in fourth overall in 48:25.


Master runner Edna Reed finished runner-up in the women's standings, crossing the line ninth overall in 57:20. Master runner Kristi Holland was the third woman and eleventh overall, running 57:52.


30 athletes finished the 2020 Crowdis 10K. 25 of them were master runners.

Master runners weren't as dominant in the shorter race that morning, the Crowdis 5K. Thomas Rischar, a senior-year member of the Crisp County High cross-country team, won the race in 17:18, defeating the defending champ, master runner Michael Martinez. Martinez, a Tallahassee, Florida athlete, ran 18:18, more than half a minute faster than he had in the 2019 Crowdis.


The top two women in the 3.1-mile race finished nearly in a dead heat, with Brittney Skiles running 20:11 and McKenzie Taylor 20:12. Skiles and Taylor were third and fourth overall.


Shawn Harris was the third male finisher, placing fifth overall in 20:19.


Another Crisp County High harrier, junior Allie Brown, placed third in the women's standings and sixth overall in 21:06. Kellie Peterson was the top woman master in the 5K, the fifth female finisher and sixteenth overall in 27:30.


70 athletes finished the 2020 Crowdis 5K.

Antonio Marchi rocks a 31:41 in the Crowdis 10K

2018 Dr. James H. Crowdis Run 10K and 5K10K records just don’t last in Blakely, Georgia. After a 10K race was added to the city’s annual Dr James Crowdis Run in 2017, the course records have fallen each year. In 2018 Dr Patrick Whitehead rolled to a 35:59 win, breaking his own 2017 course record of 36:24. Ann Centner topped the women’s competition in 2018 with a 41:32, demolishing the women’s course record of 54:43, established in 2017 by Katie Sheppard.


And on Saturday morning, 19 January 2019, at the 23rd Crowdis Run Antonio Marchi ran the 10K in 31:41, winning the race by more than two kilometers. In case you haven’t been following, that was also a new course record. There was a new women’s course record as well; sixteen-year-old Viviana Schuyler took the women’s title in 41:22, knocking off Centner’s 2018 mark while placing third overall.


The Crowdis Run began in 1981 as a 5K. The 5K is still part of the Crowdis, starting at the same time and following the same course as the 10K. The 2019 races started from Blakely First United Methodist Church with Antonio Marchi quickly bolting out ahead of the entire field, 5K and 10K runners alike. There must have been some excitement back at the church when Marchi came back into sight at the end of his first five-kilometer loop, with the spectators thinking that they were about to see the first sub-16:00 at Crowdis since 1992. Instead, they saw Marchi ignore the 5K finish line and turn back onto the course for another five kilometers of running. The next time Marchi appeared at the church he did cross the finish line, astonishing the onlookers with his winning 31:41. Most of the 5K field was still out on the course.


Myles Gibson of Donalsonville, Georgia was the first master runner in the race, placing second overall in 39:00, his second straight year in the runner-up spot. A prominent figure in Crowdis history, Gibson had won the 5K in 1993, 2014, and 2015. Master runner Jay Wrenn was third in the men's competition and fourth overall, running 47:18.


Viviana Schuyler had finished second to Ann Centner in the women's competition at the 2018 Crowdis. Centner wasn't at the race in 2019, having since moved from Blakely to Tallahassee, Florida. But if Schuyler couldn't race Centner then she could race Centner's record. The Bainbridge High sophomore cross-country runner did just that, trimming ten seconds off the women's course record with her 41:22. Adrian Parker was second to Schuyler in the women's standings, placing eleventh overall in 55:59. Chandra Hanson was the first woman master and third female finisher, fourteenth overall in 64:49.


Eighteen athletes finished the 2019 Dr. James H. Crowdis 10K.

Alan Flores, a frosh-year runner on the cross-country team at Northview High, finihsed second to Martinez in 19:41. Headland High junior-year cross-country runner Will Scott was third in 19:55.


Dothan, Alabama master runner Carolyn Houston took second in the women's standings, placing twelfth overall in 23:44. Gail Morris was the third woman and fifteenth overall in the 5K with a 24:36.

Helms and Winkler win by moonlight in Kolomoki

Along the eastern seaboard of the United States, there was a full moon on Sunday evening, 29 April 2018, peaking exactly at 8:58 PM. However, according to Jesse Emspak at Space.com, "For casual observers, the moon looks pretty full a day before and a day after the actual full phase." So the moon looked "pretty full" at 9:00 PM on Saturday, 28 April 2018, when the Full Moon Glow Run started near Blakely, Georgia in Kolomoki Mounds State Park. David Helms won the race by just over 30 meters, running 19:44. Blakely master runner Margaret Winkler was the first woman in the race, placing sixth overall in 27:06. It was Winkler's third Moon Run women's title; she had also won the race in 2013 and 2014.


Mikhael Crispen, an eighth-grader on the Early County cross-country team, finished a close runner-up to Helms, running 19:52. David Forrester of Headland, Alabama took third in 23:24.


Jennifer Brown placed second in the women's standings and thirteenth overall in 31:06. Joanna Braswell was the third woman and fourteenth overal in 31:28.

Good Life City Runners Whitehead and Centner win the Crowdis

2018 Dr. James H. Crowdis Run 10K and 5KDr. Patrick Whitehead's first time at the Dr. James H. Crowdis Run was 2015. He dropped out a mile into the race.


As if to make up for that inauspicious debut, the Albany, Georgia athlete returned to Blakely, Georgia the next year and won the 2016 Crowdis 5K. Whitehead was back in Blakely for the 2017 Crowdis, winning the newly-added 10K race at the event. And on Saturday morning, 20 January 2018, Whitehead successfully defended his 10K title, running a course-record 35:59 at the 22nd Dr. James H. Crowdis Run. Ann Centner of Blakely won the women's title, placing third overall in 41:32.


The race had no sooner started than Whitehead was out front, rapidly leaving the field behind. When he dashed across the finish line with a sub-36:00 winning time, Whitehead had run ten kilometers before any other runner had gone nine. Donalsonville, Georgia master runner Myles Gibson took second in 39:55. Gibson is a three-time winner of the Crowdis 5K, picking up the first of those wins back in 1993. Haydn Griffin, a senior on the Bainbridge High cross-country team, was third in the men's standings and fifth overall in 44:07.


Ann Centner's winning 41:32 put her across the finish line almost 600 meters ahead of the next woman. It was Centner's first victory at the Crowdis Run; she had finished second to Sheryl Rosen in the 2016 Crowdis 5K. Behind Centner, Vivianna Schuyler was the women's runner-up and fourth overall in 44:07. Karen Wilson was the first woman master and third female finisher, eighth overall in 51:23.

It was the second year of the Crowdis 10K, but the 5K is the original race at the Crowdis Run, going back to the founding of the event in 1981. Dothan, Alabama's Alan Flores, a frosh on the Northview High cross-country team, won the 2018 Crowdis 5K in 19:20. Arnoldo DeJesus of Albany was second in 20:09, and Headland (Alabama) High sophomore cross-country runner Will Scott was third in 20:19. Dale Thomas was the top master runner in the 5K, placing fourth in 20:19.


Dothan, Alabama master runner Carolyn Houston was the women's champ in the 5K, placing fourteenth overall in 24:17. Master runners Stephanie Odom and Cathy Jones were second and third in the women's standings, eighteenth overall in 25:59 and nineteenth overall in 26:11.

Whitehead and Sheppard win the first 10K at the 21st Crowdis Run

2017 Dr. James H. Crowdis Run 10K and 5KA lot changed about the Dr. James H. Crowdis Run in 2017. After being contested twenty times over 37 years as a five-kilometer race, the main event changed to a 10K. After four years of running in July, the date of the Crowdis moved to the other end of the calendar, changing to 21 January 2017. The course changed. The starting line and the finish line changed.


It was still a Blakely, Georgia race, though. The run still started and finished at the First United Methodist Church. And the winner was still Patrick Whitehead. The Darton State College professor shrugged off the change from 5K to 10K and claimed his second straight Crowdis title, covering the 6.2-mile course in a winning 36:24. Katie Sheppard, a frosh on the Southwest Georgia Academy cross-country team, claimed the women's title, placing ninth overall in 54:43.


Enterprise (Alabama) High cross-country runner Michael Warner finished runner-up in 41:23. Bainbridge High junior Haydn Griffin took third in 44:03, and Baconton County sophmore Gregory Manning was fourth in 45:07. Dylan Hrncik was the fastest master runner in the 10K, placing sixth overall in 48:30.


Stephanie Odom of Colquitt, Georgia was the fastest woman master and second female finisher, eleventh overall in 55:29. Bainbridge, Georgia master runner Suzanne Angell was third in the women's standings and sixteenth overall in 57:56.

The 5K wasn't dropped from the program of the Dr. James H. Crowdis Run, though; it only lost top billing. Trevor Cleveland won the shorter event by nearly 400 meters. A junior on the Lee County High cross-country team, Cleveland completed the 3.1-mile course in 19:23. Alli Hay, a senior-year cross-country runner at Pataula Academy, was the top women and overall runner-up in 20:23. Dale Thomas was the fastest master runner in the 5K and fourth overall in 21:01. Debra Hunter-McCoy was the first woman master and sixth female finisher, 21st overall in 24:51. Hunter-McCoy had been the women's champ at the 2012 Crowdis 5K.


33 athletes finished the 2017 Dr. James H. Crowdis 10K, with another 58 completing the 5K.

Whitehead and Rosen bring speed to the Crowdis 5K

Patrick WhiteheadIn 2015 Dr. Patrick Whitehead didn't finish the Dr. James H. Crowdis 5K, dropping out just short of two kilometers into the race. On Saturday morning, 9 July 2016, however, the Darton State College psychology professor returned to the streets of Blakely, Georgia. This time Whitehead not only finished the race, he won, running the five kilometers in 17:07--the fastest time since the race was revived in 2012. On the women's side, Sheryl Rosen turned in a swift winning time of 19:14, faster than any woman had run at the Crowdis 5K since 1994.


Whitehead's victory ended Myles Gibson's Crowdis 5K winning streak. A Donalsonville, Georgia master runner, Gibson had won the race in 2014 and 2015. In 2016 he settled for second place behind Whitehead, running 18:26. Dustin Reynolds, a senior on the Seminole High cross country team, was third in 18:45. Albany, Georgia's Arnoldo DeJesus, runner-up at the 2015 Crowdis, took fourth in 20:05.


The Crowdis 5K was run annually in Blakely from 1981 to 1995. After that there was a seventeen-year hiatus before the event was resumed in 2012. During the original fifteen years more often than not the women's champion posted a winning time under 20:00. This wasn't the case after the race rebooted; Paige Braswell's 2013 winning time of 21:14 was the best mark in the new century. That is, it was till the 2016 race. Tallahassee lawyer Sheryl Rosen became the first woman to run sub-20:00 at the new Crowdis 5K, placing fourth overall in 19:14. Rosen wasn't the only woman to crack 20:00, either. Blakely's Ann Centner ran 19:48, finishing second in the women's standings and fifth overall. Kaderricka Adams, a senior at Dothan Northside Methodist Academy in Alabama, was third on the women's side and tenth overall in 22:39. Alford, Florida's Jill Wofsey was the top woman master and fourth female finisher, coming in twentieth overall in 24:54.

Gibson and Winkler repeat at Crowdis

Myles GibsonIn Blakely, Georgia, about 1400 meters into the 2015 Dr. James H. Crowdis 5K, there was a water table set up on Wyatt Jarrett Street. The race is out and back, so the athletes got to visit the table twice. Well after the leaders had gone by for the first time, one of the runners called out to the volunteers staffing the water stop.


"Those boys got out fast today!" he said.


"One of them did, anyway," was the response.


That one was Patrick Whitehead, who was leading by almost half a minute going by the water station. At the end of the race, though, it was Donalsonville, Georgia, master runner Myles Gibson who crossed finish line first, running 18:10 and winning the race for the second year in a row.


"I wasn't supposed to win today," said Gibson. "The guy in front of me was way ahead."


Arnoldo DeJesusNevertheless, win Gibson did. On the women's side master runner Margaret Winkler of Blakely was also a repeat winner, taking the women's title in 23:02.


The 19th Crowdis 5K started on River Street in front of Blakely First United Methodist Church Just after 8:15 AM. There was no sign that there would be a repeat of the rainstorm during the 2014 race; the sky was clear and the day promised to be hot. Patrick Whitehead, wearing the colors of the Albany, Georgia, Good Life City Runners, took the lead almost immediately. Bainbridge High freshman Caleb Harris trailed in second, followed by Good Life City Runner Arnoldo DeJesus and Crowdis 5K defending champion Myles Gibson.


"I didn't start racing till after the first mile," explained Gibson. "I felt really good after that."


There was a big surprise in the race just past the mile mark as Gibson started to close on Harris and DeJesus just past the mile mark. Whitehead dropped out.


Caleb Harris"He stopped and took his shoe off," recalled Gibson.


A foot injury had sidelined the leader. DeJesus passed Harris, becoming the new pacemaker. Gibson shadowed DeJesus. At the halfway point and turnaround on Westview Drive, Gibson moved into the lead. DeJesus steadily lost ground on Gibson until the runners turned back onto College Street. There, with over 600 meters from the finish line back at the Church, DeJesus began to close. But ultimately Gibson held on the last three seconds of his lead, enough to beat DeJesus's charge and win the race in 18:10.


"It's my best time in three years, so I'm really happy," said Gibson.


DeJesus was second in 18:13. Caleb Harris placed third in 18:48, while Bainbridge master runner Greg Waddell was fourth in 19:50.


Margaret WinklerIn addition to running his fastest 5K time since 2012, Gibson also ran two seconds faster than his winning time in the 2014 Crowdis 5K. Women's winner Margaret Winkler also bettered her Crowdis Run time from a year ago. In successfully defending her title, Winkler finished 19th overall in 23:02, significantly faster than her winning time of 23:24 in the previous year's race. Truett-McConnell College cross-country runner Lauren Tosky was second in the women's standings, placing 24th overall in 24:35. Megan Helms of Headland, Alabama, was the third female finisher, 28th overall in 25:17. Enterprise High cross country runner Annabelle Warner edged master runner Jill Wofsey for the fourth women's spot, 26:09 to 26:10.


107 athletes finished the 19th Crowdis 5K, the most since the race was revived in 2012. You'd have to go back to 1991 to find a larger Crowdis Run. Another throwback to the race's original years of 1981 to 1995 was USATF course certification. The Crowdis 5K course had been certified as accurate in 1988; 2015 was the first year that the new course was also certified. Look for another Crowdis 5K on the USATF certified course #GA15001WC in July of 2016.
