DeJesus and Ostrander do it again at the Resolution Run

If there is a runner in the Albany, Georgia area who hasn't made a New Year's resolution for 2018, that runner should perhaps consider making a resolution to beat Arnoldo DeJesus in the 2019 Resolution Run 5K. It's possible that an athlete has resolved to do so in the past. If so, it hasn't worked. DeJesus won the race when it was first held in 2016 and again in the second running in 2017. When the race returned for it's third edition on Monday morning, 1 January 2018, DeJesus won it again, running 19:58. There was a repeat winner on the women's side as well when master runner Sara Ostrander successfully defended her women's title with a 22:15, good for fourth place overall.


Behind DeJesus, Edward Ostrander, an eighth-grader on the Lee County High cross-country team, was second in 20:26. Ostrander's time was more than two minutes faster than he had gone in the race the previous year, when he finished third. Eric Crump was the fastest master runner in the Resolution Run 5K, placing third overall in 21:17.


Alisa Simonova was runner-up in the women's standings for the second year in a row; this time she was seventh overall in 23:16. Amy Sliwinski was third in the women's standings and tenth overall in 23:52. Karen McNally was the top woman master and fifth female finisher, thirteenth overall in 24:43.


49 athletes finished Albany's third annual Resolution Run 5K.

Henry Plowden and Ann Centner lead Albany's Jingle Bell Jog

In 2016, Henry Plowden won the 5K at Albany, Georgia's 28th annual Jingle Bell Jog. On Saturday morning, 9 December 2017, Plowden returned to Tift Park for the 29th annual Jingle Bell Jog, but this time the sophomore cross-country runner from Westover High was racing 10K. He was just as successful at the longer distance, winning in 38:51. Blakely, Georgia's Ann Centner continued her habit of winning women's title all over Southwest Georgia, running 39:50 in her first Jingle Bell Jog 10K to place first in the women's standings and second overall.


Dennis Moore of Leesburg, Georgia was the fastest master runner in the 2017 Jingle Bell Jog 10K, placing third overall and second in the men's standings at 41:56. Three years earlier, Moore had been the top master runner in the 2014 Jingle Bell Jog 10K. Ashton Donahue, a senior on the Baconton High cross-country team, was the third male finisher and fourth overall in 42:00. Two-time Jingle Bell Jog 10K champion Patrick Whitehead was the fourth man and sixth overall with a 43:46.


Also clocked in 43:46 but finishing just ahead of Whitehead, Jennifer Perkins was the second woman and fifth overall. Perkins had been the top woman in the 2016 Jingle Bell Jog 10K. Sarah Harris was the third woman and eleventh overall in 46:25. Lynn Varner was the first woman master and eighth female finisher, 23rd overall in 51:14.


141 athletes finished the 2017 Jingle Bell Jog 10K.

While the defending champion of the Jingle Bell Jog 5K, Henry Plowden, was racing the 10K, Arnoldo De Jesus was winning the shorter race, running 19:30. Trevor Boeckman took second in the 5K with a 19:41. Jon Durham, an eight-grader on the Deerfield Windsor cross-country team, was third overall in 19:49.


Sara Ostrander was the fastest master runner as well as the first woman in the 5K, placing tenth overall in 21:44. Kristen Scheuter took second in the women's standings and eleventh overall in 22:29. Meghan Pate was the third female finisher, coming in twentieth overall in 23:56.


Gordy Bonner was the first male master and fourteenth male finisher in the 5K, sixteenth overall in 23:18.


372 athletes finished the 2017 Jingle Bell Jog 5K. Both the 10K and the 5K were timed by Orion Racing of Atlanta, Georgia.

New Year, same old story; DeJesus wins Resolution Run

If you were hoping that 2017 would be different from 2016 then you might be disheartened at the running news out of Albany, Georgia. On 1 January 2017, just like on 1 January 2016, Arnoldo DeJesus won Albany's Resolution Run 5K. This time around, DeJesus won the race in 20:38. Hope for change came in the women's competition, where master runner Sara Ostrander won for the first time in 22:35, placing fourth overall. 23 athletes braved wet streets to finish the Sunday morning race.


400 meters behind DeJesus a battle brewed for second place. David Evans, Edward Ostrander, and Sara Ostrander were all clocked in 22:34.6. Evans got the nod for second, while Edward Ostrander, a seventh-grader on the Lee County Middle School cross-country team, was third.


Fourth went to the top woman, Sara Ostrander. Alisa Siminova was second in the women's standings and fifth overall in 22:50. The 2016 Resolution Run women's champ, Karen McNally, was the third female finisher and ninth overall in 26:26.

De Jesus and McNally open 2016 with Resolution Run wins in Albany

The Flint River was in flood stage in Albany, Georgia, on 1 January 2016. Most of Riverfront Park was underwater, as was the Flint River Greenway Trail and a few city streets. But neither a little floodwater nor some seasonally cool weather could prevent 61 athletes from running the Resolution 5K that Friday morning. They were apparently determined to start the new year right.


Arnoldo De Jesus won the race by more than 250 meters, running the 3.1 miles in 19:03. Dennis Moore was the top master runner and overall runner-up with a 20:05. Lee County Middle School cross country runner Ben Phillips was third in 20:58, and Colquitt County Middle School harrier Case Gregory took fourth in 21:15.


Albany master runner Karen McNally was the top woman in the Resolution Run, placing ninth overall in 24:26. Ildico Babica was second in the women's standings, tenth overall in 24:52. Lee County Middle School cross country runner Emily Phillips was the third female finisher, twelfth overall in 24:54.

DeJesus and Foster are animals at the Run Through The Zoo

North of Albany, Georgia, Chehaw Park has miles upon miles of trails where you can do a long run nearly every day of the year. Since 2012, though, there is one day of the year that you can run in the Chehaw Park Zoo, past camels and cheetahs and kangaroos. It's a race, and it's quite simply called the Chehaw Through The Zoo 5K.


The fourth annual Chehaw Through The Zoo 5K was Saturday morning, 19 September 2015. Good Life City runner Arnoldo DeJesus led the charge past the animals, winning the race in an event record of 18:55, breaking the 2012 mark of 19:29 set by Josh Fix. Robert McCoy was the runner up and top master runner, running 19:06. Master runner Robert Nolasco was third in 20:11.


Tatiana Foster was the first woman in the race, placing eleventh overall in 24:53. Madye Carter (14th, 25:26), Leslie Clemons (18th, 26:05), and Nichole Graham (20th, 26:12) took the next three places in the women's standings. Jolie Grace was the top woman master and the fifth female finisher, coming in 23rd overall in 26:41.


155 athletes finished the 2015 Chehaw Through The Zoo 5K. Timing services were provided by Milestone Race Authority of Jacksonville, Florida.

Two wins for DeJesus and one for Cauthen at Miles For Missions

There were certainly a lot of miles run at Miles For Missions in Albany, Georgia. The inaugural event on Saturday morning, 15 August 2015, included 8K and 5K races as well as a one-mile fun run--a total of over nine miles of running. Good Life City Runner Arnoldo DeJesus did more than eight of those miles, winning the 8K in 32:27 after placing second in earlier 5K race. Former Tiftarea Academy cross country runner Allison Cauthen won the women's title in the 8K, placing fourth overall in 36:39.


DeJesus wasn't the only one in the 8K who had also run the warm-up race. Lauren Freeman placed second in the 8K with a 36:20 after running 21:57 in the 5K. Mitchell Sinyard also had raced the 5K before returning to take the top master runner spot in the 8K, placing third overall in 36:30.


The women's standings, however, were dominated by 8K specialists. Overall women's winner Allison Cauthen only raced the longer race, as did runner-up and top female master, Karen McNally. McNally was 12th overall in 40:54. Angela Gattie was the third female finisher in the 8K, coming in 14th overall in 42:24.


30 athletes finished the 8K race.

The first race of the morning, though, was the 5K. Ethan Merritt, a sophomore cross country runner at Albany Deerfield-Windsor School, won the 3.1-mile race in 17:45. Runner-up DeJesus was left more than 60 meters behind in 17:59.Westover Middle School cross country runner Henry Plowden took third in 18:10.


Southwestern Georgia State University cross country coach Brittney Skiles took the women's title in 18:46, placing fourth overall. Jennifer Perkins was runner-up on the women's side, coming in sixth overall in 19:57. Deerfield-Windsor sophomore cross country runner Camryn Bridges was the third female finisher in the 5K, tenth overall in 20:59.


Mitchell Sinyard was the fastest master runner in the 5K, getting his first master title of the morning by placing eleventh overall in 21:03. Maryann Plowden was the first woman master runner and sixth female finisher, 35th overall in 26:07.


92 athletes finished the 5K. Rhema Word Cathedral hosted the inaugural Miles For Missions to raise funds for Stand Up Again Outreach.

Harris and Jackson sail to victory in the River Run 10K

As a distance runner for the Berry College track team, Kyle Harris gets to run all sorts of unusual events. The 10,000 meters isn't that unusual a race, but on the track it's a bit odd--25 times around a 400-meter track. Harris has done that merry-go-round of a race for Berry; his best time is 34:07.06. On Saturday, 3 January 2015, Harris ran 10,000 meters in a less dizzying setting--the 11th annual Bainbridge Kiwanis River Run 10K on a road course around Earle May Boat Basin Park in Bainbridge, Georgia. He successfully defended his 2014 title at the event, posting a winning 39:28. That's a bit slower than his track time for 10,000 meters, but Harris was so far ahead in the River Run 10K that if it had been run on a track, he would not only have lapped the field, he would have lapped the next runner three times.


Mark Tombrink finished second in the 6.2-mile race, beating Max Coady for the runner-up spot 45:56 to 46:23. Kaitlin Jackson of Monticello, Florida, took the women's title, finishing fourth overall in 52:00. Nancy Elam was the first master runner and women's runner-up, fifth overall in 53:08. Kevin Angell took top male master honors, placing sixth overall in 55:32.

In the River Run 5K the 2014 champion was also back to defend his title--Bainbridge High senior Chase Harris. Having also won in 2013, Harris was going for a third win in a row. Additionally, he was the course record holder with a 17:14 set in the 2013 race. However, Arnoldo DeJesus wasn't going to be influenced by any of those credentials. DeJesus had finished third behind Harris in 2014, but not this year. Finishing close to 80 meters ahead of Harris, DeJesus won the 2015 River Run 5K in 19:29. Chase Harris took second in 19:47 and Caleb Harris was third in 20:20. Mark McCarra was the top master in the 3.1-mile race, placing fourth overall in 21:24. Kristi Johnson won the women's title in the shorter race, coming in fifth overall in 24:22. Paula Grollman was the women's runner-up and top woman master, finishing ninth overall in 26:26.

De Jesus and Oslund flit through Gnat Days 5K

Two southwest Georgia road racing institutions, the Gnat Days 5K and the Rose City 10K, were just six days apart this year. You couldn't call them twin races, though. Almost everything the Gnat Days race has, the Rose City Run seems to have more. Gnat Days is 3.1 miles long, Rose City is 6.2 miles long. Camilla, home of Gnat Days, is well into the south part of Georgia, less than 40 miles from the Florida border. Thomasville, home of the Rose City Run, is 30 miles farther south than Camilla. 124 athletes finished this year's Gnat Days 5K on 2 May 2014. 463 finished this year's Rose City 10K on 26 April 2014. Gnat Days is an old race, going back to 1988. Rose City is older, going back to 1978.


Still, Camilla has the gnats, cloud-like swarms of them. Thomasville makes no claims on Camilla's gnats.


Arnoldo De Jesus of Albany, Georgia, had raced in the 2014 Rose City Run, and he was in Camilla for the 27th annual Gnat Days just six days later. Apparently De Jesus was recovered and ready to compete; he won the Friday evening 5K in Camilla in 18:32. De Jesus was one of several athletes who ran both races. For instance, runner-up Elena Oslund had finished second in the women's standings in the Rose City 10K this spring. In the Gnat Days 5K, Oslund won the women's title in 18:50.


Leesburg, Georgia, runner Dennis Moore hadn't been in Thomasville, but he was certainly in Camilla. Moore was third overall in 19:12, claiming the top master spot in the Gnat Days 5K. Albany master runner Kurt Anthony was fourth in 19:46. A Rose City Run veteran came out on top in a close race for fifth--Thomasville's Gareth Pyle ran 19:53 to edge out Camilla's Michael McGahee (6th, 19:55) and Thomasville's Chad Johnson (7th, 19:57).


Thomasville master runner Mary Anne Grayson, a three-time women's champ in the Gnat Days 5K, was the women's runner-up, placing 10th overall in 20:45.
