Cool wins for Mines and Johnson at Chipley's Hot Trot

On 23 April 2015 Ethan Mines was a high school junior running the 3200 for the Mosley Dolphins at the Region 1 track meet. On 5 September 2015 Mines will be a senior racing for Mosley in the Dolphin Dash cross-country meet. Between those two dates, on Saturday morning, 27 June 2015, Mines was in Chipley, Florida, winning the 37th annual Hot Trot 5K road race by more than 150 meters. Mines's time for the 3.1-mile run through the streets of Chipley was 17:16. Chris Keegan, a member of Fort Rucker's Army Ten-Mile team, finished runner-up in 17:49. Two other Fort Rucker athletes took the next two places, Alex Carpenter in 18:28 and John Janigian in 18:42. Baker, Florida, athlete was the top master runner in the race, placing fifth overall in 19:28.


Marianna, Florida, athlete Kristi Johnson was running fourth in the women's field early in the Hot Trot 5K, then moved up, taking the lead at about the halfway point. Chipley master runner Jennifer Strickland challenged Johnson for that lead twice during the last mile of the race, but Johnson held her off, winning the women's title in 22:39 and placing 14th overall. Strickland edged another Chipley runner, Toby Murray, for the second women's spot, 22:45 to 22:46. Strickland and Murray were 15th and 16th overall. 17th overall went to the fourth female finisher, Eden Keene of Enterprise, Alabama. Keene finished the race in 23:04.


106 athletes finished the 2015 Hot Trot 5K. The race was the opening event of the Saturday program of the Panhandle Watermelon Festival.

Martinez wins a duel on the Greenway

The American collegiate track-and-field world was busy the weekend of Saturday, 16 May 2015. Many of the major players were in the middle of their conference championship meetings, including the ACC in Tallahassee, the Atlantic Sun Conference in Jacksonville, the SEC in Starkeville, the Pac-12 in Los Angeles, and the Can't-Count-Very-Well Conference in East Lansing. You didn't have to be at one of those tracks to see some exciting racing, though. For instance, on the Blountstown Greenway Trail in Blountstown, Florida, that Saturday morning, you could have seen the finish of a down-to-the-wire race in the fourth annual Catfish Crawl 5K, where Michael Martinez eked out a win over Tom Dever, 17:47 to 17:49.


"He was a machine!" Martinez said of Dever. "He was chatting out there."


Dever wasn't carrying on a monologue, though; Martinez was part of the conversation. Once the other athletes had fallen back, the two master runners agreed to take turns at pacing duty during the rest of the race. Dever was leading about 600 meters from the finish line, where the trail took the runners under State Road 20 and onto a boardwalk.


"He [Dever] said the footbridge was slippery so I made my move there," said Martinez. "But he came back on me. So I waited until about a tenth to go and then we kicked it out."


Of the two master runners Martinez had the better kick that day, making it over the finish line a few meters ahead of Dever. Blountstown High frosh Jesse Boyd was third in 19:26. Deerlake Middle School seventh-grader Spencer Amsellem was fourth in 20:36 and Mariana master runner Mark McCarra placed fifth in 21:33.


There weren't any finish-line dramatics in the women's competition, but it wasn't a cakewalk, either. Kristi Johnson led the women's field at the mile mark, but Tallahassee master runner Paula O'Neill was just a few steps back.


"I was running from Paula," said Johnson. "I knew she was back there and she's crazy fast so I was running scared."


Frightened or not, Johnson started to open a gap, eventually breaking contact. Johnson reached the finish line about 100 meters ahead of O'Neill, placing seventh overall in 22:41 and winning the women's title. O'Neill was ninth overall in 23:10, the first woman master and second female finisher. The 2014 Catfish Crawl women's champion, Wewahitchka master runner Lydia Miles, was third in the women's standings, coming in 16th overall in 24:07. Lessa Bates was the fourth female finisher, 20th overall in 24:49.


"I've only been running for six months so I've never run the Catfish Crawl before," said Kristi Johnson. "The course was beautiful, the trail is well maintained, the race is well organized, Ben Hall does a great job with everything. I just can't say enough good things about the race. It's probably one of the best races I've been to."


Testimonials don't get much more positive than that.


A record 135 athletes finished the 2015 Catfish Crawl 5K. The Blountstown Fire Department uses proceeds from the race for their scholarship fund, with which they award a deserving Blountstown High senior a full scholarship to the Chipola College Fire Academy. Timing and finish line services were provided by Warrior Race Timing of Panama City, Florida.

Garcia and Johnson win south Alabama's second oldest 10K

2015 hasn't been a good year for Winston Howell.


At the Dothan, Alabama, High Noon 5K Trail Run in January, Howell took a spill on the course, suffering injuries including a cut to the head, concussion, and a fractured vertebra. After that he was on his way to the hospital rather than the finish line, and it looked like the 73-year-old running icon would be missing finish lines for some time to come. It seemed especially likely that Howell would miss his namesake race, the 37th annual Winston Howell 10K on 14 March 2015. However, the Hartford, Alabama, race did go on, and as a measure of Howell's determination, he made it through a new 5K race that was added to the event this year.


The main event, though, was the original race, the second oldest 10K in south Alabama. Taylor, Alabama, athlete Julio Garcia won that 6.2-mile run through the countryside around Hartford, running 44:14. At 47:13, the next finisher was the first master runner in the race, Mark McCarra. Placing third overall in 50:45, Kristi Johnson was the first woman in the race. Karen Wilson was the first woman master runner in the race and the third woman finisher, placing ninth overall in 55:51.


23 athletes finished the 10K at the 2015 Winston Howell Road Race, and another 51 completed the 5K. Bonifay, Florida, master runner Val Lichner was the fastest in the shorter event, covering the 3.1 miles in 24:14. Hartford's Joshua Bedsole, 14, was the runner-up and first overall male finisher, running 24:59. Winston Howell himself placed 51st, crossing the finish line in 50:25.


The Winston Howell Road Races are sponsored by the Hartford Civic Club; all proceeds benefit Hartford Boy Scout Troop 32.

Sununu and Johnson tops at the return of the Tulip Trot

Trevor Sununu hadn't planned to run a race on Saturday morning, 31 January 2015.


"I was in the middle of my long run and I saw them setting up traffic cones in front of my house," said Sununu.


The cones were for the Tulip Trot 5K, a benefit for the National Parkinson Foundation.


"I had already run ten miles," said Sununu. "But the race was for a good cause and my grandmother had died from an advanced case of Parkinson's. Fortunately I had an emergency twenty dollar bill with me."

The FSU freshman ran down to Cascades Park and entered the race with his emergency cash. Almost instantly after the 9:00 AM start of the Tulip Trot, Sununu was in the lead. 3.1 miles later he had won the race by more than 600 meters, running 17:53. James Thompson took second with a 20:24. Chiles High junior Drew Starnes picked up several places during a strong second half, placing third in 20:48. Mark McCarra of Marianna, Florida, was the top master runner in the field, finishing fourth overall in 21:03.


On the women's side, Hope Hoffman set the early pace. About two kilometers into the race, though, Kristi Johnson pulled even with Hoffman. After that it was Johnson's race as she pulled steadily away from Hoffman, eventually building up a 150 meter lead. Johnson finished the 5K in a personal best time of 23:26, winning the women's title and placing twelfth overall. Hoffman was second in the women's standings, coming in 14th overall in 24:08. Vanessa Reinhardt was the third woman finisher, coming in 17th overall in 24:49. Fran McLean edged out Nancy Proctor 24:54 to 24:55 for the top woman master and fourth in the women's division.


For Sununu the Tulip Trot was his first competition since the 50-mile race at the Tallahassee Ultra-Distance Classic last December, a run that had left Sununu's heels rubbed raw and bloody.


"I've got some pretty nice scars from that," said Sununu. "I haven't been able to get the bloodstains out of my shoes."


Scars, stained racing flats, and all, Sununu's next race will be the Run For The Cookies on 14th February 2015. Well, maybe. "I'm 90% certain," he says. After all, you never know when some other event is going to set up traffic cones in front of your house.


The Tulip Trot 5K was first held in Tom Brown Park in 2010 and 2011. After those first two races, there was a hiatus of nearly four years before the event returned in 2015 with a new USATF-certified course in Cascades Park. 202 athletes finished the revived Tulip Trot 5K.

Harris and Jackson sail to victory in the River Run 10K

As a distance runner for the Berry College track team, Kyle Harris gets to run all sorts of unusual events. The 10,000 meters isn't that unusual a race, but on the track it's a bit odd--25 times around a 400-meter track. Harris has done that merry-go-round of a race for Berry; his best time is 34:07.06. On Saturday, 3 January 2015, Harris ran 10,000 meters in a less dizzying setting--the 11th annual Bainbridge Kiwanis River Run 10K on a road course around Earle May Boat Basin Park in Bainbridge, Georgia. He successfully defended his 2014 title at the event, posting a winning 39:28. That's a bit slower than his track time for 10,000 meters, but Harris was so far ahead in the River Run 10K that if it had been run on a track, he would not only have lapped the field, he would have lapped the next runner three times.


Mark Tombrink finished second in the 6.2-mile race, beating Max Coady for the runner-up spot 45:56 to 46:23. Kaitlin Jackson of Monticello, Florida, took the women's title, finishing fourth overall in 52:00. Nancy Elam was the first master runner and women's runner-up, fifth overall in 53:08. Kevin Angell took top male master honors, placing sixth overall in 55:32.

In the River Run 5K the 2014 champion was also back to defend his title--Bainbridge High senior Chase Harris. Having also won in 2013, Harris was going for a third win in a row. Additionally, he was the course record holder with a 17:14 set in the 2013 race. However, Arnoldo DeJesus wasn't going to be influenced by any of those credentials. DeJesus had finished third behind Harris in 2014, but not this year. Finishing close to 80 meters ahead of Harris, DeJesus won the 2015 River Run 5K in 19:29. Chase Harris took second in 19:47 and Caleb Harris was third in 20:20. Mark McCarra was the top master in the 3.1-mile race, placing fourth overall in 21:24. Kristi Johnson won the women's title in the shorter race, coming in fifth overall in 24:22. Paula Grollman was the women's runner-up and top woman master, finishing ninth overall in 26:26.
