McPherson and Floyd champs at the 38th annual Winston Howell Road Race

Winston HowellFinishing the race almost 600 meters ahead of the next runner, Adam McPherson won the Winston Howell 5K Road Race on Saturday morning, 12 March 2016, in Hartford, Alabama. McPherson covered the 3.1-mile course in 18:56. Kimberly Floyd was the women's champ, placing tenth overall in 25:10. 62 athletes finished the race.


Henry Walter took second in the 5K, running 21:28. Close behind Walter, Garrett Keller was third in 21:36. Mark McCarra was the fastest master runner in the race, finishing fifth in 22:20.


Sandy Turner was the top woman master and second female finisher, 21st overall in 28:52. Codi Clemons was third in the women's standings, placing 25th overall in 30:02.


The Winston Howell Road Race was first held in Hartford in 1979. The 1980 United States Census reported that a year later there were 2,648 people living in Hartford. The most recent Census in 2000 found that the city had 2,369 residents. The population didn't change much, and the Winston Howell Road Race continued each year. But that first race in 1979 was a 10K, and so were the next 35. Then in 2015 a 5K was added to the program. In 2016 the 5K continued, but the 10K was dropped. The second-oldest 10K road race in South Alabama was gone.


Whatever the future of the Winston Howell Road Race, the 2016 race was sponsored by the Hartford Civic Club, with proceeds benefiting Hartford Boy Scout Troop 32.

Garcia and Johnson win south Alabama's second oldest 10K

2015 Winston Howell Road Race2015 hasn't been a good year for Winston Howell.


At the Dothan, Alabama, High Noon 5K Trail Run in January, Howell took a spill on the course, suffering injuries including a cut to the head, concussion, and a fractured vertebra. After that he was on his way to the hospital rather than the finish line, and it looked like the 73-year-old running icon would be missing finish lines for some time to come. It seemed especially likely that Howell would miss his namesake race, the 37th annual Winston Howell 10K on 14 March 2015. However, the Hartford, Alabama, race did go on, and as a measure of Howell's determination, he made it through a new 5K race that was added to the event this year.


The main event, though, was the original race, the second oldest 10K in south Alabama. Taylor, Alabama, athlete Julio Garcia won that 6.2-mile run through the countryside around Hartford, running 44:14. At 47:13, the next finisher was the first master runner in the race, Mark McCarra. Placing third overall in 50:45, Kristi Johnson was the first woman in the race. Karen Wilson was the first woman master runner in the race and the third woman finisher, placing ninth overall in 55:51.


23 athletes finished the 10K at the 2015 Winston Howell Road Race, and another 51 completed the 5K. Bonifay, Florida, master runner Val Lichner was the fastest in the shorter event, covering the 3.1 miles in 24:14. Hartford's Joshua Bedsole, 14, was the runner-up and first overall male finisher, running 24:59. Winston Howell himself placed 51st, crossing the finish line in 50:25.


The Winston Howell Road Races are sponsored by the Hartford Civic Club; all proceeds benefit Hartford Boy Scout Troop 32.

Kimberlin and Wofsey leave Hartford with Winston Howell 10K titles

Jill WofseyTexas native Rick Kimberlin of the Kentucky Army National Guard is a maintenance test pilot and an instructor pilot. He has completed Ironman triathlons and three overseas deployments. And as of Saturday morning, 8 March 2014, Kimberlin can add Winston Howell 10K Road Race champion to that resume. Kimberlin ran 43:20 to win the 36th annual running of the Hartford, Alabama, race. Dothan, Alabama, master runner Mike Houston finished runner-up in 44:03, with Brooks Newell right behind him in third place at 44:11.


Alford, Florida, master runner Jill Wofsey finished second in the women's standing of the 2013 Winston Howell 10K. 2014 would be different. This time around Wofsey placed 14th overall in 52:44, improving on her previous year's time by 43 seconds and winning the women's title. Less than 40 meters behind Wofsey, master runner Kristina Bennett of Dothan, Alabama, was second in the women's standings, coming in 15th overall in 52:56.


47 athletes finished the 6.2-mile race, including the event namesake, Winston Howell, who was 45th overall in 1:30:56. The race is held annually by the Hartford Civic Club, with all proceeds going to benefit the Hartford Boy Scouts.

Green and Houston lead the 35th Winston Howell 10K

It's no secret that the oldest 10K road race in south Alabama is Mobile's Azalea Trail 10K, which was first run in 1978. But the second oldest 10K road race in south Alabama is hidden away in tiny Hartford. Dating back to 1979, the annual Winston Howell Road Race was held for the 35th time on Saturday morning, 9 March 2013. Troy University professor Dr. Michael Green added his name to the roster of Howell 10K champions, recording a winning 32:35 for the 6.2-mile race. Green finished almost 1500 meters ahead of the runner-up, David Seymour, who clocked a 38:09. Dothan's Michael Houston was third in 42:20, and Mark McCarra of Grand Ridge, Florida ran 43:27 to become the fourth finisher and first master. Dothan master runner Carolyn Houston was the first woman in the race, placing 13th overall in 49:49. And the race's namesake, 72-year-old Winston Howell, finished 36th in 72:34.

Dobson and Unrath rule the roads in the 33rd annual Winston Howell 10K

It sometimes seems like the Winston Howell 10,000-meter Road Race has been around Hartford, Alabama as long as Winston Howell himself, but the run is actually only about half the age of the runner. Still, the race goes back to 1979, making the 12 March 2011 running of the event the 33rd annual 10K.


Master runner Matt Dobson of Jay, Florida won this time around, running 35:01. Dobson finished nearly 800 meters ahead of the defending champion, Tallahassee's Kevin Sweeny, a master runner who covered the course in 38:03. Melissa Unrath placed 8th overall in 44:44 as the first female and the first female master; the Fort Rucker, Alabama runner finished as the second woman and first woman master six weeks earlier at Dothan's Hog Wild 15K. 300 meters behind Unrath, Beth Sutkowy (9th, 46:08) was the women's runner-up.


The race was run on a USATF certifed course (AL96005JD) that started and finished near the National Guard Armory in Hartford, Alabama. The Hartford Civic Club sponsors the race, and all proceeds are benefit Hartford's Boys Scout Troop 32.
