Jason Teitloff and Dana Cody proved fittest at Fit To Fight

No one has won Dothan, Alabama's Fit to Fight 10K as many times as Myles Gibson. The Donalsonville, Georgia master runner was the first finisher in the race in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, and 2018. And on Saturday morning, 4 May 2019, Gibson was back in Dothan for the eleventh annual Fit to Fight 10K, ready to add another victory to his total. This time, though, Dothan's Jason Teitloff took the title, running the 6.2-mile course in a winning 37:45. Dana Cody was the first woman in the 10K, finishing more than a kilometer ahead of her nearest competitor in 44:35 and placing fourth overall.


"Jason jumped out to a pretty good lead early," reported Mark McCarra. "Then when I saw him and Myles with a mile and a half to go, Jason was 21 seconds ahead."


Teitloff had come in second to Gibson in the 2015 Fit To Fight, but this time it was Gibson finishing second to Teitloff in 37:45. Eric Barnard of Midland City, Alabama took third in 43:51. Master runner Mark McCarra was the fourth male runner and fifth overall in 47:52.


Women's champ Dana Cody had her own history at Fit To Fight, winning the women's title in 2011 and 2012 before returning to add another win in 2019. Adriana Aldalpe was the women's runner-up in the 2019 10K, placing ninth overall in 49:23. Libby Mills was third in the women's standings and eleventh overall in 50:35. Anna Haberzettl was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, thirteenth overall in 52:00.

The Fit To Fight has always included a 5K race in addition to the 10K. In 2019, Taylor Johnson won the 3.1-mile event, running 20:02. Karrie Hart took top women's honors, coming in sixth overall in 22:23.


Northside Methodist cross-country alums Tanner Lotz and Blake Calhoun followed Johnson across the finish line, Lotz second in 20:29 and Calhoun third in 20:40. Dale Thomas, the champion of the 2018 Fit To Fight 5K, was the first master runner in the 2019 race, fourth overall in 20:58.


Sarah Lurie was the second woman in the 5K and tenth overall in 23:23. Ashley Dunn and Carolyn Houston were in a close race for third in the women's standings, with Dunn narrowly prevailing 24:00 to 24:02. Dunn was twelfth overall and Houston thirteenth. Houston, the Fit To Fight 5K women's champ in 2014 and 2018, was the first woman master in the 2019 race.

Good Life City Runners Whitehead and Centner win the Crowdis

Dr. Patrick Whitehead's first time at the Dr. James H. Crowdis Run was 2015. He dropped out a mile into the race.


As if to make up for that inauspicious debut, the Albany, Georgia athlete returned to Blakely, Georgia the next year and won the 2016 Crowdis 5K. Whitehead was back in Blakely for the 2017 Crowdis, winning the newly-added 10K race at the event. And on Saturday morning, 20 January 2018, Whitehead successfully defended his 10K title, running a course-record 35:59 at the 22nd Dr. James H. Crowdis Run. Ann Centner of Blakely won the women's title, placing third overall in 41:32.


The race had no sooner started than Whitehead was out front, rapidly leaving the field behind. When he dashed across the finish line with a sub-36:00 winning time, Whitehead had run ten kilometers before any other runner had gone nine. Donalsonville, Georgia master runner Myles Gibson took second in 39:55. Gibson is a three-time winner of the Crowdis 5K, picking up the first of those wins back in 1993. Haydn Griffin, a senior on the Bainbridge High cross-country team, was third in the men's standings and fifth overall in 44:07.


Ann Centner's winning 41:32 put her across the finish line almost 600 meters ahead of the next woman. It was Centner's first victory at the Crowdis Run; she had finished second to Sheryl Rosen in the 2016 Crowdis 5K. Behind Centner, Vivianna Schuyler was the women's runner-up and fourth overall in 44:07. Karen Wilson was the first woman master and third female finisher, eighth overall in 51:23.

It was the second year of the Crowdis 10K, but the 5K is the original race at the Crowdis Run, going back to the founding of the event in 1981. Dothan, Alabama's Alan Flores, a frosh on the Northview High cross-country team, won the 2018 Crowdis 5K in 19:20. Arnoldo DeJesus of Albany was second in 20:09, and Headland (Alabama) High sophomore cross-country runner Will Scott was third in 20:19. Dale Thomas was the top master runner in the 5K, placing fourth in 20:19.


Dothan, Alabama master runner Carolyn Houston was the women's champ in the 5K, placing fourteenth overall in 24:17. Master runners Stephanie Odom and Cathy Jones were second and third in the women's standings, eighteenth overall in 25:59 and nineteenth overall in 26:11.

Gibson and Smith gallop to victory at the Trot With S.W.A.T.

The annual Trot With S.W.A.T. 10K was back in Dothan, Alabama's Poplar Head Park on Saturday morning, 23 September 2017, and so was Myles Gibson. Running 39:39, the Donalsonville, Georgia master runner won the race for the second year in a row. Kate Smith took the women's title, placing tenth overall in 49:10.


Gibson was so far ahead of the rest of the field that he might have been getting lonely on the streets of Dothan; by the time he finished the ten-kilometer race he had a lead of nearly a kilometer and a half on the next runner. It was Gibson's third Trot With S.W.A.T. win; in addition to the 2016 race he had also won the inaugural Trot in 2007.


Eric Bernard was second in the 10K in 46:23. Master runner Bernardo Defarro was third overall in 46:33.


Tabatha Murdock edged Krystal Sheerun for the runner-up spot in the women's standings, 55:03 to 55:04. Murdock and Sheerun placed nineteenth and twentieth overall. Kristi Holland was the top woman master and fourth female finisher, 21st overall in 55:44.

The Trot With S.W.A.T. 10K has been around since 2007, but the 5K wasn't added to the event till 2009. Master runner Dale Thomas won the shorter race for the second year in a row in 2017, running 20:13. Richie Fernandez was second in 21:25, and master runner Mark Nichols third in 22:25.


Master runner Carolyn Houston was the women's champion in the 5K, placing fifth overall in 23:37. Rebecca Jewell was the women's runner-up and eighth overall in 25:14. Rachel David was third in the women's standings and fourteenth overall in 26:26.

Bailey and Houston "Go Wild" in downtown Dothan

After five years in downtown Dothan, Alabama, the Hog Wild 15K disappeared from the racing calendar. That doesn't mean, though, that downtown racing has disappeared from Dothan. Most recently, on Saturday morning, 5 March 2016, runners in the Go Wild 5K Run For The Murals were on the downtown streets of the Peanut Capital of the World. Master runners swept the titles, with Michael Bailey winning the men's competition in 20:14 and Carolyn Houston taking the top woman's spot in 22:36, finishing ninth overall.


Northview distance runner Alan Flores finished runner-up in 20:35, just a few steps ahead of Chad Edwards. Edwards was third overall in 20:40. Dothan High junior Michael Houston grabbed fourth in 21:09.


Master runner Kathy Gannon finished fourteenth overall in 23:46 to take second in the women's standings behind Carolyn Houston. Sylvia Grandstuff was the third female finisher, nineteenth overall in 25:00, and Kimberly Floyd was fourth for the women, twentieth overall in 25:32.

Gibson and Houston are fit to win at Fit To Fight

Dothan, Alabama, must practically be a suburb of Donalsonville, Georgia. At least you'd think that was the case because of the number of Dothan races won by Donalsonville master runner Myles Gibson. Gibson added another Dothan title to his collection on Saturday, 2 May 2015, when he won the seventh annual Fit To Fight 10K. Running the ten-kilometer road race in 37:00, Gibson finished almost and entire kilometer ahead of the next runner. Dothan athlete Jason Teitloff finished runner-up, covering the 6.2 miles in 40:52. Steven Romo of Dothan was third in 41:42.


Dothan master runner Carolyn Houston grabbed the top spot in the women's standings, finishing ninth overall in 47:16. Kelsey Kilinski was the second female finisher, twelfth overall in 48:51. Kimberly Floyd was the third woman in the 10K, coming in 17th overall in 50:52.


49 athletes finished the 2015 Fit To Fight 10K, but there were another 81 finishers in the concurrent 5K race. Dothan High sophomore Michael Houston was the fastest in the short race, running the 3.1 miles in 18:44. Dale Thomas was the runner-up and top master, running 22:32. James Wells edged Ty Nemish for third, 22:46 to 22:50. Carmel Rogers was the first female finisher in the 5K, coming in fifth overall in 22:56. Second in the women's standings went to the top woman master in the 3.1-mile race, Heather Perry. Perry placed twelfth overall in 24:51.


The Fit To Fight races started in 2009 as a fundraiser for the Dothan Fire Department to buy exercise equipment for their firefighters. Couch potatoes don't make good firemen--you have to be fit to fight fire. The event continues to this day, with the races starting and finishing at Dothan's central Fire Station.

Cagle and Houston add Brian Dowling 5K wins to their running resumés

I couldn't say where you would find the best cross-country venue in the entire state of Alabama. If you limit yourself to the southeast portion of the state, though, the best course would have to be the Larry and Ronna Dykes Trail in Dothan's Westgate Park. Which is probably why the 3.4-mile loop is the site for so many races, including high school cross-country meets, Dothan Runners Club events, 5K charity runs, and even an ultramarathon.


Justin Cagle is no stranger to the trail in Westgate, having competed their several times during the years he ran cross country on the Northview High team. Cagle put that familiarity to good use on Saturday morning, 18 May 2013, by winning the Dothan Runner Club's Brian Dowling Memorial 5K Trail Run. Finishing half a minute ahead of runner-up Nicholas Lewis, Cagle covered the 3.1 mile on the Dykes Trail in 21:00. Lewis came in at 21:33, just ahead of the 21:37 clocked by third-place finisher Ryan Brooks. Al Goudzwaard was the fastest master runner in the race, placing fourth in 21:49.


At the 2012 Brian Dowling Memorial 5K, Carolyn Houston lost the women's title by a fraction of a second to Abby Rogers, both runners clocked at 24:40. Houston had to be content with a runner-up finish and top woman master honors. But Houston wasn't going to settle for second best in 2013. Taking 19 seconds off of her time from the previous year, Houston finished as the women's champion, 15th overall in 24:21. The next two women's spots also went to master runners, with Jill Wofsey finishing 19th in 25:21 and Chris Fox placing 22nd in 26:10.


77 athletes finished the race. The event is an annual production of the Dothan Runners Club in memory of the late Brian Dowling, a runner and animal lover. Proceeds from the run benefit the Wiregrass Humane Society.

Green and Houston lead the 35th Winston Howell 10K

It's no secret that the oldest 10K road race in south Alabama is Mobile's Azalea Trail 10K, which was first run in 1978. But the second oldest 10K road race in south Alabama is hidden away in tiny Hartford. Dating back to 1979, the annual Winston Howell Road Race was held for the 35th time on Saturday morning, 9 March 2013. Troy University professor Dr. Michael Green added his name to the roster of Howell 10K champions, recording a winning 32:35 for the 6.2-mile race. Green finished almost 1500 meters ahead of the runner-up, David Seymour, who clocked a 38:09. Dothan's Michael Houston was third in 42:20, and Mark McCarra of Grand Ridge, Florida ran 43:27 to become the fourth finisher and first master. Dothan master runner Carolyn Houston was the first woman in the race, placing 13th overall in 49:49. And the race's namesake, 72-year-old Winston Howell, finished 36th in 72:34.
