Brittney Crain and Domanic Enriquez win at Westgate in the Run For The Wiregrass

Westgate ParkAnyone desiring to establish a new race in Dothan, Alabama has a ready-made course--Westgate Park's Larry and Ronna Dykes Trail. When it comes to a 5K course, you could do worse. Certainly, it would be hard to do better. Many races have taken advantage of the trail, too many to list. One such was the race that the Junior League of the Wiregrass initiated on Saturday morning, 5 April 2025, the Run For The Wiregrass 5K. Dothan's Brittney Crain won the race by over 200 meters, running 21:06. Domanic Enriquez was the first male finisher, placing second overall in 22:06.


Jennifer Taylor was the second woman in the race, coming in third overall in 25:24. Jolie Byrd of Newville, Alabama took third in the women's standings and ninth overall in 32:14.


Robert Lawrence placed second in the men's standings and fouth overall with a 25:56. At 27:39, William Manns was the third male and fifth overall.


30 athletes finished the Junior League of the Wiregrass' inaugural Run For The Wiregrass 5K.

Cole Smith and Brittney Crain were in the clover at the Shamrock Scamper

Shamrock Scamper 5KSaturday, 15 March 2025 was in the middle of the high school track and field season for the Providence Christian Eagles. That, however, didn't prevent Eagle senior Cole Smith from slipping over to Dothan, Alabama's Westgate Park Trail that morning to defend his 2024 title in the 2024 Shamrock Scamper 5K Cross-Country Race. And defend it he did, outkicking his fellow Eagle, sophomore Cash Mullins, for the win, 17:57 to 17:58. Brittney Crain of Dothan was the first woman in the Scamper, coming in third overall in 21:27.


First place in the men's standings was hotly contested, but so was the third spot. Taking that third spot, Dothan's Billy Champion finished just ahead of Drew Johnston of Midland City, Alabama, 24:52 to 24:54, while McLain Kingry of Dothan was just another step behind in fifth at 24:55. Not much farther behind was the first master runner in the race, Dothan's Steve Hoekenga. Hoekenga the sixth man and seventh overall in 25:08.


Isabelle Walker of Midland City was the women's runner-up, ninth overall in 26:40. Lindsey Marco edged Sibel Yilmaz for third in the women's division, 27:10 to 27:12. Marco and Yilmaz were eleventh and twelfth overall; Yilmaz was the first woman master.


39 athletes finished the 2025 Shamrock Scamper 5K. River Region Timing of Central Alabama timed the race.

Cole Smith and Lyndsay Daigle tore up the trails at Dothan's Shamrock Scamper

Shamrock Scamper 5KCross-country season in North America in in autumn. Cross-country season in Europe is in winter. In Dothan, Alabama you can run cross-country you can go to the Westgate Park trail and run cross-country any time of year. That includes Saturday morning, 16 March 2024, when Dothan Leisure Services hosted the Shamrock Scamper 5K on the trail. Cole Smith, a cross-country runner in his junior year at Providence Christian High, won the Scamper in 17:28, finishing well nearly 150 meters ahead of his nearest challenger. Lyndsay Daigle was the first woman in the race, placing ninth overall in 23:06.


Cole Smith doesn't just run cross-country for Providence Christian; he runs it well. Smith took sixth in Alabama's class 4A state championship on 11 November 2023, leading his team to a state title. Nor was Smith the only top high school talent in the Shamrock Scamper. Landon Davenport, a sophomore on the Wicksburg High cross-country squad, grabbed runner-up spot at the Scamper with a 17:59; Davenport had been ninth in the Alabama class 2A boys' high school cross-country championship.Cash Mullins, a frosh on Providence Christian's 2023 state championship team, placed third at the Scamper in 18:23. Myles Gibson of Donalsonville, Georgia was the first master runner in the race, coming in fifth overall in 20:51.


McKenzie Davenport, an eighth-grader and the ace of the Wicksburg High girls' cross-country team, took second in the women's standings at the Scamper, finishing eleventh overall in 24:11. At 25:51 Nicole Reyes was the third woman and fourteenth overall. Cindy Lunsford was the first woman master and tenth female finisher, 30th overall in 33:16.


63 athletes finished the 2024 Shamrock Scamper 5K. River Region Timing of Central Alabama timed the race.

Fort Rucker athletes Wendell Grouby and Sharon Sason catch some wins at the Pilgrim Chase

Wendell Grouby and Sharon Sason--they came to Westgate Park in Dothan, Alabama on Saturday morning, 30 November 2019. They came from Fort Rucker and the were the overall winner of the Dothan Runners' twentieth annual Pilgrim Chase 5K Cross-Country Race. Grouby was the first man in the race, placing first overall in 20:35. Sason was the first woman, coming in fifth overall in 23:26.


Grouby didn't go unchallenged in the 5K. Nathan Handley crossed the finish line a single second behind Grouby, placing second overall in 20:36. Handley had logged some racing time on the Westgate Park course back in 2014 as a senior on the Dothan High cross-country team. Fairhope, Alabama's Ray Hix outkicked Marc Peters of Southside, Alabama for the top master runner's spot in the race, 22:04 to 22:06. Hix and Peters were third and fourth overall.


The first woman master in the race was Kim Jones of Valparaiso, Florida, the second female and fifteenth overall in 27:33. Dothan master runner Kristi Holland placed third in the women's standings and sixteenth overall in 27:56.


51 athletes finished the 2019 Pilgrim Chase 5K. Look for the 21st annual Pilgrim Chase 5K to return to Westgate Park on 28 November 2020.

John Eiland and Rory Claussen lead the Chase in Dothan

The Dothan Runners don't have an annual February race in Dothan, Alabama's Westgate Park, but more often than not they do host a 5K there in February. In 2011 it was the Mardi Gras 5K Trail Race. On 22 February 2014 the Dothan Runners welcomed athletes to Westgate for the Winter Olympics 5K Trail Race. On 14 February 2015 they brought the 'Stache Dash 5K Trail Race to the park. And on Saturday morning, 16 February 2019, the Dothan Runners staged the Cupid Chase 5K Trail Race at Westgate Park. Master runner John Eiland won the 3.1-mile cross-country run, covering the course in 20:38. Rory Claussen, a seventh-grader who races for Panama City, Florida's Shaldera Track Club, took the women's title, placing second overall in 21:16.


"Rory killed it at the Westgate Trail Saturday," said master runner Mark McCarra. "I thought she was going to win for a while, she was still in range of the leader when we went into the woods."


Behind Eiland and Claussen's duel for the top spot, eleven-year-old Eli Butler and master runner Jimmy Russell fought for third. The youngster edged Russel for that spot, 23:09 to 23:15. Master runner Mark McCarra was the fourth male finisher, fifth overall in 23:42.


Jessica Jetton was runner-up on the women's side, placing thirteenth overall in 27:34. Chris Fox was the first woman master and third female finisher, sixteenth overall in 29:04.


41 athletes finished the Dothan Runners' 2019 Cupid Chase 5K.

John Eiland and CJ Parrish were first at the Last Gasp

Westgate ParkDothan, Alabama's Westgate Park Trail is a joy to run on. A loop nearly three-and-a-half miles long, the trail gives runners a break from pavement and from dodging vehicles. If there is anything wrong with the trail, it's that the red clay portions of the path don't hold up well during wet weather. After a heavy rain, those parts of the trail become an impassable morass.


During the December of 2018, it was unseasonably wet in Dothan. There was enough rain that the twentieth annual Last Gasp 5K Trail Run in Westgate Park had to be rescheduled. Delayed for a week, what was traditionally the last race of the year became the first race of 2019. First or last, the athletes were gasping out the miles in Westgate Park on Saturday morning, 5 January 2019.


Dothan master runner John Eiland, Jr., won the 3.1-mile cross-country race by nearly 200 meters, posting a winning time of 20:32. Finishing runner-up to Eiland was the 2017 Last Gasp 5K champion, John Strycker. A master runner from Greenville, Alabama, Strycker finished the race in 21:14. Taylor, Alabama master runner Dale Thomas took third in 22:01.


Dothan's CJ Parrish took the women's title, placing eighth overall in 26:08. Another Dothan athlete, Jessica Jetton, was the second woman and thirteenth overall in 26:51. Seven-year-old Ally Parrish of Dothan placed third in the women's standings and eighteenth overall in 28:53. Dothan's Mary Willis was the first woman master and fifth female finisher, 22nd overall in 34:53.


39 athletes finished the Dothan Runners' twentieth annual Last Gasp 5K Trail Race.

James Middlebrooks and Cori Harrell were in fast pursuit at the Pilgrim Chase

PilgrimsWhite Plains High School is in Anniston, Alabama. Anniston is far enough north in Alabama that you won't see the White Plains Wildcats cross-country team racing in Dothan--situated in the far southeast corner of the state. Nevertheless, on Saturday morning, 24 November 2018, two weeks after Alabama's cross-country season was over, Wildcat sophomore James Middlebrooks was in Dothan's Westgate Park competing in the Pilgrim Chase 5K. Middlebrooks won the ninteenth annual trail race, running 18:47. Cori Harrell of Brookhaven, Georgia was the first woman in the Chase, placing eighth overall in 21:57.


Michael Warner, a 2017 alum of the Enterprise High cross-country squad, took second in 19:10. Jose Perez of Moca, Puerto Rico was the fastest master runner in the Pilgrim Chase, placing third overall in 19:48. Scottsdale, Arizona master runner Ashley Folkes ran 20:30 for fourth overall.


Natalie Warner was second in the women's standings and fourteenth overall in 22:35. Another sophomore harrier, Warner runs for the Enterprise High cross-country team. C J Parrish of Dothan was the third woman and 23rd overall in 26:25. Right on Parrish's heels in 24th, Dothan's Kristi Holland was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, clocking 26:25.


63 athletes finished the 2018 Pilgrim Chase 5K. The race was hosted by the Dothan Runners Club. The Club will be back on the Westgate Park Trails on Saturday morning, 29 December 2018, for their twentieth annual Last Gasp 5K Trail Race.

Myles Gibson plays beat the Devil in Dothan

Westgate ParkIn Dothan, Alabama an old race got a new name. After seventeen years as the Life Is A Beach 5K, the Dothan Runners rebranded their event as the Run Like The Devil 5K. The Dothan runners also moved the race date from August to September. It was still the same course, though, the 3.1-mile route on the Dykes Trail at Westgate Park. Many of the runners were also the same--Myles Gibson, for example. The Donalsonville, Georgia master runner won the race as the Life Is A Beach 5K in 2003, 2007, 2014, and 2015. Unfazed by the name change, Gibson returned to win again on Saturday morning, 15 September 2018, running 20:42. Master runner Kristi Holland, back after finishing second in the women's standings at the 2017 Life Is A Beach 5K, was the first overall female runner in the Run Like The Devil 5K, placing eighth overall in 26:26.


Dale Thomas finished second overall for the second year in a row, this time running 21:33. Master runner Jay Wrenn was third overall in 23:22.


Mariah Self was the second woman finisher and twelfth overall in 28:54. Katie Barrentine took third in the women's standings and sixteenth overall in 31:23.


32 athletes finished the 2018 Run Like The Devil 5K Trail Race.

Mud couldn't stop the Brian Dowling 5K or Michael Warner

Brian Dowling Memorial 5K RunNothing stops the Brian Dowling Memorial 5K Trail Race, or at least nothing has since the Dothan Runners Club established the annual race in 2001. In 2018, though, nature came close to canceling the race.


The eighteenth annual Brian Dowling 5K was scheduled for 26 May 2018, but that came at the end of a week where nearly eight inches of rain fell on Dothan, Alabama. The course in Westgate Park was a mess. Rather than call off the race, though, the Dothan Runners Club rescheduled for a later Saturday morning, 16 June 2018. After three weeks the trails had recovered and the race was on.


Michael Warner won the five-kilometer cross-country race, finishing almost half a kilometer ahead of the next runner. It was Warner's second win in the Brian Dowling 5K; he had also finished first in 2016 when he was a senior on the Enterprise High cross-country team. Dale Thomas, the runner-up in the 2018 Dowling 5K, was also a past champion of the race, having won in 2014. Thomas was the fastest master runner in 2018, posting a 21:30 on the 3.1-mile tour of Westgate Park. Trevor Shaw, a rising junior on the Dothan High cross-country team, took third in 22:20.


Molly Crawford was the women's champ, placing sixth overall in 24:37. Wendy Jones was the first woman master and second female finisher, eighth overall in 25:39. Master runner Kristi Holland was third in the women's standings and thirteenth overall in 27:17.


45 athletes finished the 2018 Brian Dowling Memorial 5K Trail Race. Using race proceeds, the Dothan Runners Club will present a $1500 check to the Wiregrass Humane Society of Dothan, Alabama.

during a training run, struck by a hit-and-run driver. The
Woofstock 5K was started in his memory in 2001. In 2002 DRC
officially renamed the race the Brian Dowling Memorial 5K.

Strycker and Jetton close the curtain on 2017 at Dothan's Last Gasp

Westgate ParkFor the distance runners of Dothan, Alabama, the racing year isn't over until the Last Gasp--the Last Gasp 5K Trail Race, that is. The Dothan Runners Club's nineteenth annual Last Gasp ushered out the old year in Westgate Park on Saturday morning, 30 December 2017, and the first athlete to finish out the year was Greenville, Alabama master runner John Strycker, who covered the 3.1-mile cross-country course in a winning 20:47. Dothan master runner Dale Thomas was runner-up in 21:42, and Alford, Florida master runner Mark McCarra took third in 22:05.


Stephanie Jetton of Clio, Alabama was the first woman in the race, placing 22nd overall in 32:11. Dothan's Carol Goguen was the top woman master and second female finisher, coming in 23rd overall in 32:25.


42 athletes finished the Dothan Runners Club's 2017 Last Gasp 5K Trail Race.

No one catches Fox or Claussen at the Pilgrim Chase

PilgrimsThey may not all go "over the river and through the wood," but a lot of Americans return to their family home for Thanksgiving Day. Dothan, Alabama's Austin Fox relocated to Iowa City, Iowa, but he was back in Dothan on Saturday, 25 November 2017, two days after Thanksgiving, for the Pilgrim Chase 5K--the eighteenth annual edition of a race he had won twice before. When the race was over, Fox had picked up his third Pilgrim Chase win, covering the 3.1-mile cross-country course through Westgate Park in 17:47. Twelve-year-old Rory Claussen of Panama City, Florida won the women's title, placing tenth overall in 20:53.


Fox finished more than 150 meters ahead of the next runner. Behind him, Alan Flores and Chris Robbins battled for second. Flores, a Northview High frosh cross-country runner, prevailed at the finish line, running 18:23 to Robbins' 18:25. Bob Walker of Baker, Florida was the fastest master runner in the race, coming in sixth overall in 19:58.


Four weeks before the Pilgrim Chase, Rory Claussen had raced Florida's Middle School Girls' Cross-Country State Championship in Lakeland, Florida. A sixth-grader, Claussen had finished second in the three-kilometer race, running 11:21.77. She took an early lead over the women's field at the Pilgrim Chase, going out hard. After a more conservative start, Hannah Samuels caught up with Claussen about two kilometers into the race. Samuels was a junior on the Covenant College cross-country team, but Claussen was having none of that. She surged away from Samuels during the second half of the race, going on to win the women's competition in 20:53. Samuels was second in 22:41, placing fifteenth overall. Ashley Robbins of Eagen, Minnesota was third in the women's standings and 21st overall in 24:32. LaGrange, Georgia's Tanya Woodham was the top woman master and fourth female finisher, 25th overall in 25:24.


The 2017 Pilgrim Chase 5K Trail Race was hosted by the Dothan Runners. 64 athletes finished the eighteenth annual event.

Westgate wins for Caban-Woodham and Center at the Love 2 Run 5K

Love 2 RunOn the Westgate Park Trail in Dothan, Alabama on Saturday morning, 26 August 2017, Cristian Caban-Woodham outkicked Alan Flores for the win at Love 2 Run's Wounded Warrior 5K Trail Race. A few steps back, Ann Centner took the women's title, placing third overall in 19:15.


The tight race between the two leaders presaged some epic struggles during the 2017 high school cross-country season--Caban-Woodham is a junior on the Enterprise High cross-country team, and Flores is a frosh runner for the Northview High cross-country squad.


Myles Gibson was the top master runner in the race, edging Jason Teitloff for fourth overall, 19:33 to 19:36. Hailing from Donalsonville, Georgia, Gibson won the inaugural Love 2 Run 5K in 2014.


Laura Van Hout was second in the women's standings and thirteenth overall in 21:55. Eden Keen was the third woman and fifteenth overall in 22:57. Lurlesia Roberson of Webb, Alabama was the first woman master and sixth female finisher, 31st overall in 26:04.


Love 2 Run, the host of the Wounded Warrior 5K Trail Race, is a running specialty store in Dothan, Alabama. All proceeds of the race went to the Wounded Warrior Program.

Scott and Smith blast by the Beachgoers in Dothan

Westgate ParkOn standard calendars the seasons, in order, are winter, spring, summer, and fall. But in athletics, the season following summer is cross-country season. And in Dothan, Alabama when the Life Is A Beach 5K Trail Race comes to Westgate Park, you know that summer is almost over and cross-country will soon be here.


Heralding the approach of another cross-country season, the Dothan Runners Club held the seventeenth annual Life Is A Beach 5K on Saturday morning, 19 August 2017. Will Scott won the race in 20:42, while Kate Smith took the women's title, placing third overall in 23:11.


Scott is heading into his sophomore year at Headland, Alabama's Headland High, where he runs on the school's cross-country team. This was his second year racing the Life Is A Beach; in 2016 he had finished runner-up to Ashlee Romani in 22:06. Twelve months later, Scott trimmed nearly a minute and a half from that time to earn his first Life Is A Beach win, finishing close to 40 meters ahead of the next runner, Dale Thomas. Thomas, the 2005 Life Is A Beach 5K champion, was the fastest master runner in the 2017 race, running 20:52. Brooks Newell edged master runner Mark McCarra for the third spot in the men's standings, 23:15 to 23:17.


Kristi Holland was the first woman master and second female finisher, placing tenth overall in 27:21. Jennifer Wade was the third woman in the 5K and eighteenth overall in 31:59.

When Sean Kent is a repeat winner, he's really a repeat winner

Brian Dowling Memorial 5K RunHere's a story that has an eerie, time-travel feeling to it. Maybe the SyFy channel would be interested.


A runner wins a cross-country race in his hometown, finishing 31 seconds ahead of the next runner. It's an annual race, but he doesn't return the next year, or the next. The years roll by. Then, after a six-year absence, he returns to the race and wins again, by the same 31 second margin. His time is even the same both years. Is he caught in a time loop? Are we caught in a time loop?


The runner was Sean Kent and the race was the Brian Dowling Memorial 5K Trail Race in Dothan, Alabama during 2011 and 2017. Admittedly, Kent didn't log exactly the same winning times both years; he ran 18:50 in 2011 and 18:49 in 2017. Or maybe his performances actually were the same, and the one-second difference is a timing error.


Uncanny.


Sean Kent did win the 17th annual Brian Dowling 5K in Westgate Park on Saturday morning, 3 June 2017, though. And although he was a junior on the Northview High cross-country team when he ran the race in 2011, in 2017 Kent's win came just three weeks after he ran his last race for Troy University, a 10:28.89 in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the Sun Belt Conference Championships. There was no loop; time marches on.


Jason Teitloff was second in the Dowling 5K, running 19:20. Will Scott, a rising-sophomore on the Headland High cross-country team, placed third in 21:21. Dale Thomas was the first master runner, placing fourth overall in 21:37. Thomas was also in that 2011 race.


Charlotte Haberstroh was the first woman in the race, placing tenth overall in 26:43. Kristi Holland was the top woman master and second female finisher, thirteenth overall in 27:29. Master runner Carol Goguen placed third in the women's standings and 22nd overall in 32:11.


41 athletes finished the 2017 Brian Dowling Memorial 5K Trail Race. The event has been presented annually by the Dothan Runners Club since 2001.

In 2000 Dothan Runners Club member Brian Dowling was killed
during a training run, struck by a hit-and-run driver. The
Woofstock 5K was started in his memory in 2001. In 2002 DRC
officially renamed the race the Brian Dowling Memorial 5K.
