Ireland and Bokenfohr winners at this beach party

Providence Christian School cross-country coach Nicholas Ireland ran 17:52 on the trails of Westgate Park to win the "Life is a Beach" 5K on 21 August 2010 in Dothan, Alabama. Ireland finished over half a kilometer ahead of the runner-up, Dothan's Tyler Scheidt (20:02). Theron Carter of Brundidge, Alabama ran 20:11 to place third and take the top master spot. Competition was much tighter in the women's division, with Katrina Bokenfohr (11th, 21:50) crossing the finish line just a few steps ahead of her twin sister Kristina Bokenfohr (13th, 21:52). The Bokenfohrs are sophomores and runners on the cross-country team at Enterprise (Alabama) High School. Melissa Unrath (17th, 22:21) of Enterprise was the first woman master and third woman overall.

There were 113 recorded finishers in the "Life is a Beach" 5K. The run was held on Westgate Park's Larry & Rona Dykes Trail, a 3.5-mile course that sees a lot of races. The Pilgrim Chase Trail Run, the Last Gasp Trail Run, The Leprechuan Chase Trail Run, the Five-A-Day, the Minuteman Trail Run, the Brian Dowling Memorial 5K, and the entire Hot Summer Nights series are among the events staged on the loop at Westgate. The course is convenient. Traffic control is not a problem. And it doesn't hurt that it's one of the best cross-country courses in the region.
