The People's Choice!

The American election season is approaching, with primary elections here in Leon County, Florida happening on August 24. This means that election advertising is everywhere, and you can hear people whining about the ubiquitous corrugated plastic candidate signs. The same people used to whine about the old printed cardboard candidate signs, and after the elections they'll go back to whining about traffic and the weather. You know who those people are.

I've never minded the signs. I used to stare out the window of the school bus on the way to and from Augusta Raa Middle School and count them, keeping records. Since then, I've occasionally pondered ways of recycling the signs after elections. This would be especially easy if a candidate named "Miles" were running for office. "Mile" would work, but "Miles" would be better. The candidate's signs would look something like this:

After the election, the signs could be collected from the roadside, and a little bit of paint would give them a long and useful second life marking road race courses. For example:

Preferably Miles would run for Congress or some other office that comes up for election every two years. I'd probably have to vote for Miles, because only Harold Stassen can be depended upon to stand for election time after time without winning. I'd probably vote for a metric candidate, too, but how likely is that? "Janet Kilometer?" I don't think so.

But if you know of any aspiring politicians named Miles, let them know that they already have support among local race directors. Or at least a bunch of volunteers for post-election clean-up.
