Jeremy Collier and Georgina Hernandez were the fastest at The Farm in the NeSmith Way 5K

NeSmith Way 5K logoOn Saturday morning, 10 May 2025, cross-country running made its yearly return to The Farm north of Tallahassee, Florida in the form of the sixth annual NeSmith Way 5K. Jeremy Collier won the 3.1-mile run through the fields and forests of The Farm, running 18:04--the fastest time ever in the six-year history of the race. Georgina Hernandez was the first woman in the 5K, finishing fifteenth overall in 24:38.


Collier, who finished more than 200 meters ahead of the next runner, is no stranger to cross-country running. In his junior year at Community Christian School, Collier has been racing for the school's cross-country team for the last six seasons. Jackson Rowe, second to Collier in 18:54, is likewise an experienced harrier. Rowe spent the 2024 cross-country season racing for the George Mason University Patriots after years of running for Chiles High and Montford Middle School. Abel Adams, Abel Adams, a frosh on the Leon High cross-country team, took third in 19:41. Duane Evans was the first master runner in the 5K, coming in seventh overall in 22:11.


Abigail Stephens was second in the women's division, coming in 24th overall in 27:42. Stephens is an eighth-grader and distance runner at Maclay School, just across Meridian Road from The Farm. A step or two behind Stephens, Kiersten Kinsley was the first woman master and third female finisher in the race, placing 25th overall in 27:44.


52 athletes finished the 2025 Nesmith Way 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee chip-timed the race.

Brittney Crain and Domanic Enriquez win at Westgate in the Run For The Wiregrass

Westgate ParkAnyone desiring to establish a new race in Dothan, Alabama has a ready-made course--Westgate Park's Larry and Ronna Dykes Trail. When it comes to a 5K course, you could do worse. Certainly, it would be hard to do better. Many races have taken advantage of the trail, too many to list. One such was the race that the Junior League of the Wiregrass initiated on Saturday morning, 5 April 2025, the Run For The Wiregrass 5K. Dothan's Brittney Crain won the race by over 200 meters, running 21:06. Domanic Enriquez was the first male finisher, placing second overall in 22:06.


Jennifer Taylor was the second woman in the race, coming in third overall in 25:24. Jolie Byrd of Newville, Alabama took third in the women's standings and ninth overall in 32:14.


Robert Lawrence placed second in the men's standings and fouth overall with a 25:56. At 27:39, William Manns was the third male and fifth overall.


30 athletes finished the Junior League of the Wiregrass' inaugural Run For The Wiregrass 5K.

Adam Lassila and Annie-Grace Funderburg prevail on Payne-ful trails

2025 Trail Of PaynePayne's Prairie, a geographic oddity in Florida between Gainesville and Micanopy, has been home to camels, mastodons, giant ground sloths, bison, cattle-herding Seminoles, and (in the years when the prairie was flooded) steamships. Since 2011 Payne's Prairie has also been home to a trail race, the Trail Of Payne 10K, a tour of Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park. On Saturday morning, 29 March 2025, Gainesville athlete Adam Lassila won the thirteenth annual Trail of Payne 10K, finishing over a kilometer ahead of the competition in 38:57. Annie Grace-Funderburg of Orlando, Florida was the first woman in the race, placing third overall in 47:58.


William Cunningham, a sophomore on the Buchholz High cross-country team, was back for more Payne after first running the race in 2024. In the 2025 event, Cunningham took the runner-up spot in 44:37, improving on his time (49:40) and place (6th) from the previous year. Ocala, Florida's Lucas Burkley took third in 46:30. Jeff Carney of Gainesville was the first master runner in the race and the fourth male finisher, coming in fifth overall in 48:22.


It was Adam Lassila's first experience with Payne, but women's champ Annie Grace-Funderburg was a veteran of the race. Grace-Funderburg's debut at the Trail Of Payne 10K was in the 2022 race, where she finished in over an hour. The Orlando athlete was back in 2023, running 49:06 and placing runner-up in the women's division. In 2024 Grace-Funderburg was again second in the women's standings, this time with a 52:36. 2025 was her fastest as well as her most successful outing at the Trail Of Payne, as she went 47:58 for the women's title.


Lillian Hamman of Gainesville was second to Grace-Funderburg on the women's side, placing eleventh overall in 49:40. Another Gainesville athlete, Shauna Dixon, was the first woman master and third female finisher, seventeenth overall in 52:31.

In 2024 race management added a 5K to the program for any athlete who wanted a little less Payne. The Trail Of Payne 5K returned in 2025, and Toni Illaru of Finland won the race, running 21:19. Another master runner, Gainesville's Benjamin Wilkinson, ran 23:11 for second. Harlan Carney, a frosh on the track team at P. K. Yonge School, took third with a 23:49.


Master runners swept the top three places in the women's standings, with Andrea Galinski of Gainesville first. Galinski was Galinski was ninth overall in 27:42. Brandy Nethery of Micanopy, Florida was the second woman, tenth overall in 28:10. At 28:47, Kim Swinehart of Dunellon, Florida was the third woman and twelfth overall.


88 athletes finished the 2025 Trail Of Payne 10K, while another 83 completed the 5K.

Cole Smith and Brittney Crain were in the clover at the Shamrock Scamper

Shamrock Scamper 5KSaturday, 15 March 2025 was in the middle of the high school track and field season for the Providence Christian Eagles. That, however, didn't prevent Eagle senior Cole Smith from slipping over to Dothan, Alabama's Westgate Park Trail that morning to defend his 2024 title in the 2024 Shamrock Scamper 5K Cross-Country Race. And defend it he did, outkicking his fellow Eagle, sophomore Cash Mullins, for the win, 17:57 to 17:58. Brittney Crain of Dothan was the first woman in the Scamper, coming in third overall in 21:27.


First place in the men's standings was hotly contested, but so was the third spot. Taking that third spot, Dothan's Billy Champion finished just ahead of Drew Johnston of Midland City, Alabama, 24:52 to 24:54, while McLain Kingry of Dothan was just another step behind in fifth at 24:55. Not much farther behind was the first master runner in the race, Dothan's Steve Hoekenga. Hoekenga the sixth man and seventh overall in 25:08.


Isabelle Walker of Midland City was the women's runner-up, ninth overall in 26:40. Lindsey Marco edged Sibel Yilmaz for third in the women's division, 27:10 to 27:12. Marco and Yilmaz were eleventh and twelfth overall; Yilmaz was the first woman master.


39 athletes finished the 2025 Shamrock Scamper 5K. River Region Timing of Central Alabama timed the race.

Florida Springs Trail Series victories for Nathan Meloy and Natalie Lord at Ichetucknee

Ichetucknee Springs 5K Trail RaceWhen most people think of Florida's Ichetucknee Springs State Park, they think of lounging in the water on an innertube or other float, drifting down the spring run on the current. However, park also includes the land around the springs and that land includes trails, some of which were included in the second annual AdventHealth Ichetucknee Springs 5K Trail Race on Saturday morning, 15 March 2025. Nathan Meloy won the race; the frosh member of the Tavares High cross-country team covered the course in 20:32. Natalie Lord, currently of Cambridge, Massachusetts, was the first woman in the 5K, placing second overall in 21:23.


Racing for second in the men's division, Fort White, Florida's Japheth Sommers edged Matthew Fischer of Ocala, Florida, 21:40 to 21:43. Sommers and Fischer were third and fourth overall. Just behind them, John McDaniel was the first master runner in the race and the fourth male finisher; the Sebring, Florida athlete was fifth overaall in 21:45.


Danae Witte of Gainesville, Florida was the women's runner-up, coming in seventeenth overall in 24:53. Candler, North Carolina's Lena Ruark-Eastes took third in the women's standings and 21st overall in 25:10. Lori Simpson of Lake City, Florida was the first woman master and fifth female finisher, 26th overall in 26:56.


191 athletes finished the 2025 Ichetucknee Springs 5K Trail Race. The event was part of Sommer Sports' 2025 Florida Springs Trail Run Series; the next scheduled race in the Series is the Rock Springs Run Trail Race in Sorrento on Saturday, 17 May 2025.

Leonardo Canete and Morgan Whiton were the top Swamp Runners at Waycross' 48th annual race

2025 Okefenokee Swamp RunLeonardo Canete--the Tallahassee, Florida master runner--won the 48th annual Swamp Run 10K near Waycross, Georgia on 8 March 2025. To pick up the win, Canete didn't have to run faster than he had in winning the race in 2022 or 2023. Probably any time under 39:00 would have put him first across the finish line. He didn't have to, but he did. Canete posted his fastest time yet at the race in Okefenokee Swamp Park, earning his third Swamp Run win with a 37:33. Morgan Whiton of Salem, Massachusetts was the first woman in the 10K, placing sixth overall in 46:59.


Austin Hunter of San Marcos, California finished runner-up to Canete in 39:10. Brunswick, Georiga athlete Cohen Carpenter was third in 41:36.


Bree Howard of Blackshear, Georgia took second in the women's standings, coming in ninth overall in 52:14--more than two minutes faster than she had run in the 2023 Swamp Run, her last appearance in the race. Another Blackshear athlete, Libby Dodd, was the first woman master in the Swamp Run. Dodd was the third woman and tenth overall in 52:36. It was her third year in a row as the Swamp Run's top woman master.

70 athletes finished the 2025 Swamp Run 10K, and another fourteen completed a one-mile fun run. Second Wind Race Timing timed and scored the races.

The World Cross-Country Countdown started with wins by Leonardo Canete and Rebekah Mills

The next World Athletics Cross-Country Championship is slated for Tallahassee, Florida's Apalachee Regional Park Cross-Country Course on 10 January 2026. So on Saturday morning, 11 January 2025, 364 days before the big event, Visit Tallahassee hosted a Countdown to the World Championship at ARPXC. Heading the schedule at the Countdown was a three-kilometer cross-country run on the course. Tallahassee master runner Leonardo Canete was the first to finish the 3,000 meters, running 10:53. The first woman was Rebekah Mills, who toured the course in 13:34.

It was Canete's second win of 2025; just seven days earlier he had won the half-marathon at Gulf Winds Track Club's Swamp Forest Trail Race, another cross-country event. Both Canete and Mills had raced at Apalachee Regional Park three weeks before the Countdown in the Tannenbaum Trail 6K on 21 December 2024. Based on that schedule, you'd have to think that the two athletes have some love for the sport. You wouldn't be wrong.


"It's wonderful that there's so much excitement for cross-country here," said Mills, Caesar Rodney High's four-time medalist at the Delaware Cross-Country Championships. "It's the best sport."

Excitement is warranted. You'll see different figures for the number of national teams that will compete in the World Championship (dozens and dozens) and for the number of athletes (hundreds and hundreds). The exact numbers aren't important, though. What is important is that these will be the best cross-country runners in the world. This is, after all, the World Championship, and these harriers will be competing in Florida, in Tallahassee, at Apalachee Regional Park.


There will be five races. Senior men, senior women, junior men, junior women, and a mixed relay. "Senior" means any age; the senior athletes race ten kilometers. "Junior" is under 20, the junior men race eight kilometers and the junior women six kilometers. The relay is 4 x 2 kilometers in the order man, woman, man, woman.

No one in any of the five races will have to race up Apalachee Regional Park's notorious incline, the Wall. The races will each feature multiple laps around a new two-kilometer loop at ARPXC, a loops that will feature a sand element (symbolizing Florida's beaches), a mud element (symbolizing the Everglades), a roller-coaster element (sharp up-and-downs symbolizing Florida's theme parks), and a water element (symbolizing Florida's water recreation). Thankfully, there will be no 'gator attack element (symbolizing Florida's wildlife) or lighting-oneself-on-fire element (symbolizing Florida man).


The World Championship has never before been in Florida. It has seldom been in the United States; of 46 World Championship meets Tallahassee 26 will be only the third in North America.

Margaret Bartlow and Henry Lewis repeat as 2A District 1 cross-country champions

On Friday morning, 1 November 2024, the FHSAA 2A District 1 Cross-Country Championship was at Apalachee Regional Park. It was the second year in a row that the meet had been held at that Tallahassee, Florida venue. It was also the second year in a row that Margaret Bartlow of North Bay Haven won the District title in the girls' 5K. And it was also the second year in a row that Henry Lewis of Wakulla took first in the District's boys' 5K. The Pensacola Catholic girls were the top team in their race with 45 points, while West Florida scored 39 points in the boys' 5K, claiming the team title in that race.

The girls raced first, starting just before 8:50 AM. By 8:50, North Bay Haven's Margaret Bartlow was leading. She reached the end of the first kilometer of the five-kilometer race almost 50 meters ahead of the next runner, Pensacola Catholic junior Addison Garrett. By three kilometers, Bartlow's lead had swollen to more than 200 meters. Garrett was hanging onto second, while Wakulla senior Isabella Laughton had moved into third. Bartlow continued to widen the gap over the remaining two kilometers, ultimately crossing the finish line first by 300 meters in 18:43.


"I was just trying to breathe," Bartlow said after the race. "I've been having some nasal problems. We're really focusing on Region and State."


"It was a bit warm today, but not compared to the heat we raced in and trained in early in the season."

Pensacola Catholic's Addison Garrett took second in the district, running 19:54. Isabella Laughton of Wakulla placed third in 20:27. Another Wakulla senior, Lana Hawkins, was fourth in 21:01.


The next two spots went to Pensacola Catholic athletes--junior Callie Howard was fifth in 21:07 and senior Julia Frosch was sixth in 21:18. Pensacola Catholic's remaining two scorers were frosh Isabel Gross (14th, 22:06) and sophomore Natalie Jackson (20th, 23:25), making it 45 points for the Crusaders, good for the District title.

Bartlow North Bay Haven girls totaled 50 points, taking second. Florida State University School placed third with 76 points, led by a top-ten finish by sophomore Leah Boutwell (7th, 21:43).


Pensacola Catholic, North Bay Haven, and Florida State each qualified for the 2A Region 1 meet in Jacksonville on 8 November 2024. The other teams that earned the right to race in the Region 1 championship were Wakulla (4th, 80 points), West Florida (5th, 107 points), Freeport (6th, 157 points), and Walton (7th, 179 points).

After an embarrassing number of misfires by the starter's pistol, the boys' 5K got underway just before 9:50 AM. Halfway through the race, Wakulla's Henry Lewis had a 70-meter lead, with Florida State senior Ben Kyvik his closest pursuer. Well behind Kyvik, a pack of eight athletes battled for third. Each runner in the pack would also have been happy to overtake either Kyvik or Lewis, but that didn't happen. Lewis continued to run alone during the second half of the race, stretching out his lead to almost 200 meters on his way to a 16:27 win. Kyvik took second in 17:01--more than half a minute faster than he had run at District in 2023, but not fast enough to catch Lewis.

Meanwhile, the battle for third was down to six athletes, but it was still brewing with 200 meters to go. On the homestretch, Bay senior Lundon Faile managed to gain a few steps on his rivals and take third in 17:28. Barely behind him, West Florida frosh Donovan Carmichael edged Bowen Spear, a Pensacola Catholic junior, for fourth, 17:30 to 17:31.


The West Florida Jaguars had two more scorers in the top ten, senior Riley Valdez (7th, 17:37) and junior Ray Duong (8th, 17:38). The fourth Jaguar scorer was sophomore Jude Theriault (12th, 18:01), and junior Quinn Duong (13th, 18:08) was their final scorer. West Florida had 39 points and the 2024 2A District 1 team title.

Pensacola Catholic, led by Bowen Spear, put up 65 points for second. North Bay Haven was third with 80 points; the teams's top scorer was frosh Mason Brain, sixth in 17:34.


Joining the top three teams as qualifiers for the 2A Region 1 Championship were Wakulla (4th, 99 points), Florida State (5th, 99 points), Marianna (6th, 178 points), Freeport (7th, 186 points), and Northview (8th, 209 points).

Estella Collante and Sean Cunningham nab 1A District 2 wins at Apalachee Regional Park

On Wednesday morning, 30 October 2024, the FHSAA 1A District 2 Cross-Country Championship came to Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida. The 2024 meet was very nearly all about Providence. True, Oak Hall junior Estella Collante did win the girls' 5K with a 19:35. But the Providence Stallions took the team title in the race, scoring 39 points. Providence also had the top team in the boys' 5K, scoring a mathematically unbeatable putting up a mathematically unbeatable 20 points while Stallion sophomore Sean Cunningham won the race Estella Collantein 16:39.

Sunny skies, humid air, and rising temperatures were part of the program when the girls' 5K started at 9:00 AM. A mob of Providence girls set the early pace, but by the end of the first kilometer Maclay junior Caroline Couch was leading the field. Couch, the defending champion, had posted a winning 18:20 in the 2023 1A District 2 girls' race. Behind her, a pursuit group of five runners formed--Katie Cunningham and Emma Akhundjanov of Providence, Rebecca Stratton of Saint Johns Country Day, and Oak Hall runners Lola Murfee and Estella Collante.


At the halfway point the runners had started their second loop at ARPXC. Couch continued to lead. The pursuit group was hanging together. During the second half, though, Couch dropped out and Oak Hall's Collante took over the lead.

"It was on the second loop before the big hill," said Collante, recalling where she took the lead. The "big hill" is, of course, the Wall--Apalachee Regional Park's notorious rise half a kilometer from the finish line.


Collante was more than a hundred meters ahead and still pulling away when she crossed the finish line in 19:35, the 2024 1A District 2 champion. Her Oak Hall teammate, sophomore Lola Murfee, placed runner-up in 20:02. Saint Johns Country Day senior Rebecca Stratton coming in third at 20:03.

Providence runners took the next two places, with Stallion eighth-grader Emma Akhundjanov fourth in 20:06 and junior Katie Cunningham fifth in 20:17. Providence had two more in the top ten, juniors Sara Palmer (7th, 20:53) and Kasey Davey (9th, 21:32). The Stallions fifth scorer was frosh Leeza Loftin (14th, 21:55), giving the Providence girls 39 points and the team title.


Led by the one-two finish of Collante and Murfee, Oak Hall placed second in 1A District 2 with 55 points. Maclay, District champs in 2023, edged Saint John Country Day for third, 98 to 101. Maclay's first scorer was senior Payton Thumm, sixth in 20:50.

The top eight teams qualified for the 1A Region 1 meet, scheduled for Friday morning, 8 November 2024, at Cecil Field Golf Course in Jacksonville. Providence, Oak Hall, Maclay, and Saint John Country Day made the cut, as did Trinity Christian (5th, 140), Branford (6th, 181), Christ's Church (7th, 196), and Bishop Snyder (8th, 201).

The 2024 FHSAA Cross-Country State Championship is Saturday, 16 November 2024 at Apalachee Regional Park. The 1A District 2 meet was one of the few chances during the 2024 season for athletes to preview the State Championship course at ARPXC.


"Since Pre-State was canceled because of the hurricane, this was like our Pre-State," said Collante.


Some athletes, though, have already seen ARPXC more than a few times.

"This is my seventh time running here," said Providence's Sean Cunningham. "I've been racing here since the seventh grade. You hit the Wall hard and use the downhills. It's a true cross-country course."


Cunningham was in front of the field right after the start of the boys' 5K, the rest of the Providence boys following in his wake. Soon, though, even his teammates were left behind. Not that Cunningham knew what was going on back there.

"To be honest, I didn't look back at all," he said. "I was just going to feel it out today, and do what I need to do to win. I just wanted to win today."


Cunningham did just that. Never challenged, he crossed the finish line close to a hundred meters ahead of the next runner in 16:38.21, his best time yet at ARPXC. Oak Hall senior Grant Curtis took second in 16:59, just ahead of Providence junior Harrison Kozlowski, third in 17:03.

Sam Loftin, a Providence junior, placed fourth in 17:15 and Providence senior Ellis Halton was fifth in 17:24. Providence's fifth scorer, senior Donovan Drake, also cracked the top ten, coming in seventh in 17:38. That gave the Stallion boys 20 points and the 1A District 2 title, their third in the past three years.


Led by Curtis, Oak Hall placed second with 57 points. Maclay, the host school, put up 81 points for third. Maclay's first scorer was sophomore David Barton, sixth in 17:34. Barton had won the 2023 1A District 2 race.

The top three teams qualified for 1A Region 1 competition, as did the next five--Community Christian (4th, 92 points), Saint Francis (5th, 165), Harvest Community (6th, 184), Saint John Country Day (7th, 199), and Bishop Snyder (8th, 211). For the remaining seven teams, the 2024 season was over.

The Chiles Timberwolves swept cross-country team honors in 3A District 1

FHSAA 3A District 1 Cross-CountryIf an odd-shaped state like Florida could be said to have a northwest corner, FHSAA District 1 for high school cross-country is that corner. The high school cross-country teams of District 1 started the post-season championship series on Monday, 29 October 2024 at Niceville's Twin Oaks Park with the District Championship Meet. The Chiles Timberwolves of Tallahassee had the top team in both the girls' 5K and the boys' 5K. In individual competition, Choctawhatchee junior Isabel Harter won the girls' 5K with an 18:28, while Gulf Breeze sophomore Andrew Beroset took the boys' 5K race in 15:33.


The girls were on the course first; their race starting at 9:30 AM. It was the second year in a row that the 3A District 1 Meet had been at Twin Oaks Park. In 2023 two juniors had dueled for the individual title, with Leon's Madi Sims edging Elyse Carmichael of Washington 19:01 to 19:05. Both athletes were back in 2024, but anyone expecting a rematch had not reckoned on Isabel Harter. Choctawhatchee's Harter had finished back in the field in 2023, coming in fifth in 20:11, but a year had made a great deal of difference. This time out, Harter tore around the course in 18:28, finishing the race with a 70-meter lead. Carmichael was runner-up in 18:43. Savi Stanley, a Chiles sophomore, was third in 19:02.


Stanley was only the first Timberwolf in the top ten. She was joined by junior London Mellen (8th, 19:52), sophomore Kaia Ables (9th, 19:53), and junior Maddy Morris (10th 19:57). Frosh Chloe Molen completed the scoring for Chiles, coming in sixteenth in 20:31. That gave the Timberwolf girls 46 points and the District 1 title.


Host Niceville was a close second with 51 points, led by a pair of frosh athletes--Delaney Diehl (4th, 19:43) and Riley Marise (5th, 19:47). Third in the team standings, Fort Walton Beach scored 72 points behind Viking senior Belicia O'Grady. O'Grady was sixth in 19:48.


Eighth teams qualified for next meet in the State Championship series, the 3A Region 1 Championship in in Panama City on Thursday morning, 7 November 2024. In addition to the top three squads the teams from Gulf Breeze (4th, 110), Leon (5th, 174), Mosley (6th, 201), Choctawhatchee (7th, 212), and Rickards (8th, 212) advanced to Region.

At the 2023 3A District 1 meet, only two athletes had broken 16:00 on the Twin Oaks Park course--Leon's Patrick Koon and Andrew Beroset of Gulf Breeze. Of those two only Beroset was still running high school cross-country. That might have prompted you to pick the Gulf Breeze sophomore as the favorite going into the 2024 District Meet.


It would have been a smart choice. Beroset left the field over a hundred meters behind on his way to a 15:33 win. The runner-up also cracked 16:00, with Chiles sophomore Jonathan Kiros turning a 15:54 for second place. Lincoln junior Matthew Hauser took third with a 16:04, just ahead of the 16:08 posted by fourth-place Joshua Hicks, a Chiles junior.


Chiles senior Gabriel Edwards also cracked the top ten, coming in fifth in 16:23. Chiles also got scoring performances from senior Jack Fuller (19th, 17:02) and junior Jackson Beener (20th, 17:03), giving the Timberwolf boys 50 points--good for first place in 3A District 1.


Gulf Breeze and Beroset were second with 65 points. Lincoln and Hauser were third with 89.


The other teams making the top eight and advancing to the 3A Region 1 meet were Niceville (4th, 94 points), Fort Walton Beach (5th, 119), Leon (6th, 120), Arnold (7th, 185), and Mosley (8th, 256).


The 3A Region 1 meet, though, is only another step on the way to the top of the staircase--the FHSAA Cross-Country State Chamionship in Tallahassee, Florida at Apalachee Regional Park on Saturday morning, 16 November 2024. The top eight teams in the Region will advance to State.
