Junious Brown and Ella Porcher key another Maclay sweep of 1A District 3

For the 2011 cross-country season, the Florida High School Activities Association re-drew the District boundaries, creating sixteen districts. Florida has four high school classifications in cross-country, so since 2011 there have been 64 District meets. One of those is the 1A District 3 Championship. The Maclay boys have always won their race at this meet, as have the Maclay girls. 2018 was no exception. On Tuesday morning, 23 October 2018, the Maclay girls collected their eighth-straight District 3 crown, scoring a mathematically unbeatable 21 points, while Maclay eighth-grader Ella Porcher took the individual title in 21:16. The Maclay boys also made it eight-in-a-row, winning their District competition with a score of 18. Maclay junior Junious Brown successfully defended his individual title, covering the 5K course in 16:33. Both races were held on the grounds of Maclay School in Tallahassee, Florida.

For Porcher, it was the third win in seven days. On 17 October 2018 she had won the middle school girls 3K at the Tallahassee Open. Later that same week, on 20 October 2018, she had won the high school girls' 5K in the Eagle Invitational. At the District Meet, her winning 21:16 put her just over 30 meters ahead of the next runner. That next runner was Community Christian seventh-grader Sarah Tychsen, runner-up in 21:24. Maclay eighth-grader Sofia Paredes edged her seventh-grade teammate, Susan Koeppel, to take third, 21:38 to 21:41.

Karis Desotell, a sophomore, took fifth for Community Christian in 22:28. But after Desotell, Maclay sophomores Anna Grant and Madison Perkins finished up the scoring for the Marauders, placing sixth in 23:01 and seventh in 23:08. That gave the Maclay girls their winning total of 21. Community Christian was second with 36. Led by the fifteenth place, 24:04 showing of sixth-grader Finley Boyd, Jefferson County narrowly beat out Aucilla Christian for third, 93 to 95.

The top three teams advance to the Region 1 meet, so the girls from Maclay, Community Christian, and Jefferson County could book their travel plans for Jacksonville, where the 1A Region 1 championship is scheduled for the New World Sports Complex on Saturday morning, 3 November 2018. In addition to those teams, Saint John Paul II senior Natalie Laywell also qualified for the Region 1 Championship by placing ninth in 23:15. Any athlete who places in the top fifteen advances to Region as an individual.

The top four girls were all on the homestretch together, but the athletes in the boys' race weren't nearly as tightly bunched. When Junious Brown crossed the finish line in 16:33, he had a lead of more than 400 meters. North Florida Christian junior David Andrew Keen was runner-up in 18:07, 250 meters ahead of the next runner--Maclay sophomore Sean-Patrick McCann. McCann finished third in 19:04.

The rest of Maclay's scorers weren't far behind McCann, with senior James McDuffie fourth in 19:13, junior Damian Hundley sixth in 19:46, and eighth-grader Clayton Knox eighth in 19:48. For good measure, the Marauders also put their pushers in the top ten, with senior Alfredo Paredes ninth in 19:52 and sophomore Michael Sweeney tenth in 20:02. That put Maclay in first with a near-perfect eighteen points. Led by sophomore Nicholas Ciarlariello, fifth in 19:40, the Community Christian boys were second in the District with 58 points. Jefferson County was third with 81 points, led by sophomore Matthew Steen, twelfth in 20:15.

Those three teams--Maclay, Community Christian, and Jefferson County--qualified for the Region. David Andrew Keen advanced to the Region 1 Championship as an individual, as did Aucilla Christian sophomore Joseph Davis (7th, 19:48) and Saint John Paul II sophomore Nicholas Moran (14th, 21:02).
