Tallahassee's top 5K road times in 2018 (through September 29)

It has been a little too long since I last visited Tallahassee's 5K road rankings. During the interim there have been four 5K races in town on USATF certified courses--the Firecracker 5K on 4 July 2018, the Sickle Cell 5K on 8 September 2018, the Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival on 22 September 2018, and the Victory Run 5K on 29 September 2018. When I was doing the previous update of the rankings, I hadn't even heard of the Victory Run. I certainly didn't know that it was going to be held on a USATF certified course. Things move quickly when it comes to Tallahassee road racing.

Some of the runners move quickly, too. From those four races, thirteen performances made it into the men's top 25 and sixteen made it onto the women's list. Let's start with the men's side. At the Sickle Cell 5K, Christopher Haynes ran 15:16, improving on his Palace Saloon 5K time and moving to second in the rankings. Ricardo Estremera went 15:34 at the Firecracker 5K, then finished alongside Haynes at the Sickle Cell 5K to get a share of second on the men's list. Stan Linton's 15:52 runner-up showing at the Firecracker 5K puts him fifth in the rankings, and Austin Whitelaw's 16:30 in the same race puts him seventh on the list. Chris O'Kelley and Charlie Kline round finish the top ten at ninth and tenth, both with performances at the Sickle Cell 5K--O'Kelley a 16:40 and Kline a 16:42.


Amy Hines made her first 5K run of the year count, running 18:07 for the women's title at the Sickle Cell 5K, putting her third on the women's list. In the same race, Sheryl Rosen improved half a minute on her previous 2018 best at the Palace Saloon 5K, running 18:11 and moving up to fourth in the rankings. Ann Centner ran 18:18 at Sickle Cell to secure the sixth spot on the list, and Jennifer McGranahan is eighth on the list with the 19:22 she ran at Sickle Cell.

Some things haven't changed, though. Justin Garrard still has the fastest time of the year, the 15:15 he ran at the Palace Saloon 5K. Adriana Piekarewicz still leads the women with her 17:59 from the Run For The Cookies 5K. Tony Guillen remains the year's best master at 18:03, his time at the Palace Saloon 5K. And Corinne Porcher still has the best mark of the year by a woman master, 21:29 at the Palace Saloon 5K.


With less than three months left in 2018, there isn't much time left to topple those marks. It could happen, though, at the Deer Run 5K on 3 November 2018, the VetFest 5K on 12 November 2018, Gulf Winds Track Club's Tallahassee Turkey Trot 5K on 22 November 2018, or any other race meeting these criteria:

• The race has to be in Tallahassee (anywhere in Leon County is fine)
• The race has to be run on a USATF certified course
• The race has to have published results
• I have to see the results
