Leonardo Canete and Shanya Washington blaze winning debuts in the Swamp Run

On the northern outskirts of the great Okefenokee Swamp, Tallahassee master runner Leonardo Canete won Waycross, Georgia's 45th annual Swamp Run 10K, covering the trails in 38:38 and finishing 600 meters ahead of the next runner. Columbus State Cougar cross-country runner Shanya Washington was the first woman in the 19 March 2022 event, placing third overall in 41:09.


The race started from the Georgia Lions Club's Camp For The Blind, near Laura Walker State Park. Rain in the region had threatend to turn the course into an extension of the Okefenokee Swamp, but on the Saturday morning of the race, the trails were passable--at least for cross-country runners. Setting the early pace for the field were Leonardo Canete and Dylan Dixon, a junior on the Bacon County High cross-country team. Eventually, Canete left Dixon behind, going on to win the race in 38:38. Dixon was runner-up in 41:09. Brunswick, Georgia's Nate March was the third male finisher, placing fourth overall in 44:01. Jon Robertson, a Ware County High cross-country runner, was fourth in the men's standings and fifth overall in 44:33.

Since 2016, Shanya Washington has raced cross-country for Ware County High, South Georgia State, Albany State, Point University, and Columbus State, but on the first day of spring, 2022, she was back in Ware County for the Swamp Run. By the end of the ten-kilometer race, Washington had moved up to third place overall and was close to the runner-up spot, going 41:15. It was the fastest women's time at the event in twenty years; not since 2002 when Jessica Collins ran 39:00 had a womam posted a better mark in the Swamp Run.

Tiffany Warren of Waycross was the top woman master and second female finisher in the 10K, placing sixth overall in 45:07. The defending women's champ of the Swamp Run, Warren has won the race in 2008, 2009, 2014, 2016, and 2021. Thirteen-year-old Abby Dell, an eighth-grader on the cross-country team at Southside Christian School, was third in the women's standings and tenth overall with a 50:05--eight-and-a-half minutes faster than she had run in the 2021 Swamp Run.


82 athletes finished the 2022 Swamp Run 10K, with another twelve completing a one-mile fun run. Second Wind Race Timing timed and scored the race. Okefenokee Track and Cycling Club hosted the event.
