Red, white, and flew! Leon harriers Audrey Dogan and Sukhi Khosla win District 3-3A

Sukhi KhoslaThe red and white of Leon High School was prominent at Tallahassee's Apalachee Regional Park cross-country course on Saturday morning, 26 October 2013. Leon freshman Audrey Dogan ran 19:36 for 5K to take the FHSAA District 3-3A girls' cross-country title, then Leon junior Sukhi Khosla posted a 15:52 to take the boys' title. But cross-country is primarily a team sport, and Stanton Prep took the girls' team title home to Jacksonville, scoring 37 points. In the boys' race Chiles repeated as team champs, edging cross-town rival Leon by three points for the second straight year.

Audrey DoganThe girls got the course first, racing at 9:00 AM. Stanton runners Emily Isely, Breck Peterson, and Emily Faltemier went to the front right away, and they were still holding the first three positions at the 3200-meter mark. But 20 seconds behind Iseley, Leon's Audrey Dogan and Chiles runners Ashton McMurray and Alex Wallace were in pursuit. Over the last mile Dogan, McMurray, and Wallace overtook the three Stanton runners then raced for home. Dogan broke away to take the district title in 19:36. McMurray and Wallace took second and third, both runners clocked in 20:00. Iseley (4th, 20:07), Peterson (5th, 20:07), and Faltmier (6th, 20:07) grabbed the next three places for Stanton. When they were followed across the finish line by their teammates Kayla Thomas (9th, 20:59) and Kayce Whitbeck (13th, 21:40), Stanton had a team score of 37 points--good enough to win the district team championship. Leon finished second with 42 points, while Chiles was third with 73. Those three teams advanced to the Region 1-3A meet, but the season came to an end for Lincoln, Columbia, and Terry Parker.

FHSAA District 3-3A Cross Country ChampionshipsSeven teams lined up for the 9:45 AM start of the boys' race, but only four squads would qualify to go on to the Region 1 meet. Trying to make sure their team would be one of the four, five runners charged into the lead group--Eric Tallbacka of Stanton; Lee runners Dominic Williams, Rayford James, and Ky're Griffis; and Leon's Sukhi Khosla. Khosla was the course record holder at Apalachee Regional Park on the strength of a 14:59.45 two weeks earlier at the FSU Invitational. By the 3200m mark, the pack had dropped Griffis, but they were being stalked by Stanton's Wesley Norton and Cade Zimmerman of Chiles. Zimmerman had won the district championship in 2012, outkicking Khosla for the title.

At 4K Khosla struck, running away from the rest of the lead pack. He was unchallenged over the last kilometer, taking the district title in 15:52. Wesley Norton followed, second in 15:59. Tallbacka was third in 16:08, and Dominic Williams fourth in 16:13. Zimmerman of Chiles was fifth in 16:20, the first of five Chiles runners who finished 17th or better, giving the Timberwolves a team total of 50 and the district title. Khosla-led Leon was second with 53 points. Stanton took third with 57, and Jackonville's Lee High School was fourth with 94. Lee was the last team to qualify for the Region 1 meet; it was the last race for Lincoln, Columbia, and Terry Parker.

The top six teams at the Region 1 meet would be back on the Apalachee Regional Park course in two weeks for the FHSAA State Finals in cross-country.
