Willis and Rutherford win in District 3-1A; Maclay sweeps the team titles

The Florida High School Athletic Association decreed that the 2013 cross-country season would start and finish a week earlier than it had in 2012. In spite of the calendar, when it was time for the District 3-1A championships on Thursday morning, 24 October 2013, temperatures were almost autumnal. You know, real cross-country weather. So under clear skies and in cool air, the small schools of the Big Bend came to Maclay School for the first round of the state championship series in cross country.

The program opened with the girls' 5K race, three times around a loop on the Maclay School campus. Almost immediately after the starting siren sounded at 9:15 AM, Maclay freshman Caroline Willis was setting the pace for a lead pack that consisted almost entirely of Maclay School athletes. Not quite halfway through the 3.1 miles, Willis had broken away, and the first seven positions were all held by Maclay runners. It stayed that way through the second loop, then the third loop, and all the way to the finish line. Caroline Willis won in 21:32 and her fellow Marauders took the next six places, giving Maclay a perfect 15-point score and the district title. Aucilla Christian was second with 60 points and John Paul II Catholic was third with 69 points. All three teams qualified advanced to the Region 1-1A championships in Lake City, Florida, on Saturday, 2 November 2013.

The boys' 5K race followed at 9:45 AM, and by 9:46 AM North Florida Christian School senior Griffith Rutherford, the District 3 defending champion, was in the lead. NFC's Luke Strickland and Maclay's Connor Daughton battled for the second position. Later in the first loop, Jack Rutledge of Maclay joined the struggle for second. By the end of the second loop, Rutledge had fallen back, leaving Strickland and Daughton. Meanwhile, Rutherford just got farther and farther ahead. Strickland left Daughton during the third loop, taking sole possession of second. Aucilla Christian's Braden Mattingly passed Daughton to move into third. Rutherford and Strickland held their positions to take the top two places for North Florida Christian, running 16:43 and 17:06. Aucilla's Mattingly took third in 17:10. Connor Daughton held off Aucilla's Gatlin Nennstiel for fourth, 17:22 to 17:24. After Nennstiel, though, Maclay took four of the next five places, putting all five of the Marauder's scorers in the top ten and giving the host team a score of 35 points--just barely good enough to beat North Florida Christian's total of 37, giving Maclay another district title. Aucilla was third in the team standings with 58 points, and John Paul II fourth with 111. The top three teams advanced to the Region 1 meet, but the season was over for John Paul II.
