Leonardo Canete and Caroline Willis collect wins at the return of the Bowlegs 5K

"I though he was going to catch me," said Leonardo Canete.


He didn't. No one caught Canete, as the Tallahassee master runner won Gulf Winds Track Club's 37th annual Bowlegs 5K on Saturday morning, 8 January 2022. Racing through Innovation Park on the south side of Tallahassee, Florida, Canete edged Mickey Moore for the win, 18:09 to 18:15. Davidson College alum Caroline Willis was the first woman in the 3.1-mile race, placing fourth overall in 19:25.

Temperatures had crept up into the 40s when the race started at 9:00 AM near the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. Leonardo Canete was soon in the lead, arriving at the 800 meter mark six seconds before Mickey Moore. Two kilometers into the race, Canete was still six seconds ahead of Moore. Six seconds, six seconds. After Canete crossed the finish line in a winning 18:09, Moore was there six seconds later, taking second in 18:15. Tristan LaNasa was third in 19:21. Matthew Hauser, an eighth-grader on the Montford Middle School cross-country team, was fourth in the men's standings and fifth overall in .


Caroline Willis hadn't raced a 5K in Tallahassee since 2019, when she she went 20:20 at the Firecracker 5K. Of course Willis had been busy during 2017-2021 racing cross-country and track for Davidson College, a sequel to her prep career at Maclay School. At Bowlegs, she led the women's field from start to finish, logging a winning 19:25. Half an hour after finishing, Willis was still running around Innovation Park.

Alyssa Terry took second in the women's standings, placing eighth overall in 20:16. Terry had also been the women's runner-up in the previous Bowlegs, running 20:27. 2006 Bowlegs women's champ, Stephanie Liles-Weyant, was the third woman and the first female master runner in the race, coming in eighteenth overall in 21:56. Eleven-year old Charlotte Sikes was fourth in the women's standings and 20th overall in 22:04. Savannah Stanley, a cross-country runner and seventh-grader at Montford Middle School, was the fifth woman and 24th overall in 22:22.


129 athletes finished the 2022 Bowlegs 5K Run For Scholarship. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the race.

From 1985 to 1994 the Bowlegs 5K was run on the main campus of Florida State University, starting and finishing near Tully Gym, on USATF certified course FL88014BH. From 1995 to 2020 the Bowlegs 5K was run in Innovation Park, starting and finishing near the College of Engineering on USATF certified course FL95008DL. The course was later re- certified with number FL12001EBM. In 2022 the course was slightly modified and certified with number FL21047JK.

Milford and Willis lead a Maclay sweep of the individual and team titles in 1A District 3

On Tuesday morning, 18 October 2016, championship season opened for the class 1A high school cross-country teams of Florida's Big Bend with the District 3 meet. This gateway to the Region 1 championships was hosted by Aucilla Christian Academy at the University of Florida's IFAS Jefferson County Extension Office, just west of Monticello.


Competition opened with the girls' 5K race. Maclay senior Caroline Willis won the race, covering the 3.1-mile course around the Extension Office grounds in 20:51. It was Willis' fourth district title in four years. Maclay also took the next three places, with Marauders Molly McCann second in 20:56, Lindsay James third in 20:58, and Ella Porcher fourth in 22:22. John Paul II senior Julia Rose Travis was the first runner to interrupt the wave of Marauders; Travis was fifth in 22:34.


Once Maclay's Sophia Paredes had crossed the finish line sixth in 22:35, the Marauders had a near-perfect score of 16 points and the team title. Led by the eighth-place 22:55 performance of Natalie Vasquez, Aucilla Christian was second in the team standings with 58 points. John Paul II placed third with 68 points. All three teams advanced to the Region 1 championships, scheduled for Friday afternoon, 28 October 2016, at the Escambia County Equestrian Center near Pensacola.

In the girls' race, Caroline Willis was the only past champion on the starting line. However, there were three athletes in the boys' 5K who had won the race before. Maclay senior Jake Mazziotta had been the 1A District 3 champion in 2013, Aucilla Christian senior Gatlin Nennstiel had won the title in 2014, and Maclay sophomore Clay Milford was the 2015 winner. When the 2016 race was over, Milford had successfully defended his 2015 title, winning the race in 17:28. Nennstiel was runner-up in 17:40, and Junious Brown IV of Maclay was third in 18:16. 2013 champ Mazziotta was fourth in 18:25.


Once Thomas As the top three schools, Maclay, John Paul II, and Aucilla Christian qualified for the Region 1 championship. By placing fifth in 18:51, David Keen of North Florida Christian advanced to the Region 1 meet as an individual, as did Community Christian's Andrew Wynn, who was eighth in 19:01.

Stan Linton runs 4:30.10 before breakfast

The race in Tallahassee, Florida on Saturday morning, 13 August 2016, wasn't an Olympic middle distance event, but it featured a finish that would do credit to any Olympic run. On the homestretch of the Maclay School Track, in the final hundred meters of the Gulf Winds Track Club Mile, Stan Linton ran down Matt Mizereck to get the win, 4:30.10 to 4:31.67. With less drama, Caroline Willis took the women's title with a 5:26.47.

Roger Bannister never won the 1500 meter run or any other event at the Olympic Games. Even without Olympic gold, though, Bannister is an athletic legend because he was the first to run a mile in under four minutes. The persistence of Bannister's fame shows just how tight a grip the mile has on our imaginations. Consider also that more than 200 people showed up at Maclay School just to run a mile at the nineteenth annual Breakfast On The Track.


With so many people wanting to run a mile, the race had to be run in eleven sections. The athletes expecting to run the fastest were in the first section. That section include two former Florida State University distance runners, Stan Linton and Matt Mizereck. Back on 6 May 1954 at Oxford University, Bannister had stepped onto the Iffley Road Stadium track to run a 4:00 mile. Linton and Mizereck were chasing a less ambitious 4:30. In 1954, Bannister had Chris Brasher and Chris Chataway to set the pace for him. At the Breakfast On The Track, Linton and Mizereck had also brought a pacemaker.


"He was supposed to go out in 2:12 for the first half mile," said Mizereck, the 2014 Gulf Winds Track Club Mile champion. "But he got a little happy and ran 2:02."

It was fast enough that Linton couldn't keep up with the rabbit. Mizereck did, and was ten seconds ahead of Linton when the pacesetter stepped off the track halfway through the race. Mizereck wasn't unaffected by the fast first two laps, though. On the third lap he was already starting to struggle, and Linton was starting to catch up.


On the fourth and final lap Mizereck was in zombie mode, plodding onward by reflex. Linton was gaining but still far behind. Even with 100 meters to go Mizereck's lead seemed safe. But Mizereck had nothing left, and couldn't react when Linton charged by on the way home. Linton was across the line first followed by Mizereck.


"I was trying to get under 4:30," said Linton. "But I guess we fell short."

It was close, though, with Linton clocked in 4:30.10 and Mizereck in 4:31.67. Three high school cross country runners followed, with Bainbridge High senior Poncherella Leonard third in 4:44.86, Maclay senior Jake Mazziotta fourth in 4:45.30, and Maclay sophomroe Clay Milford fifth in 4:50.02. Bryan Koon, Director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management, was the top master runner in the mile, placing seventh overall in 4:57.59.


Caroline Willis was the only woman in the second section and the fastest woman in the race, placing 26th in the overall standings in 5:26.47. A senior at Maclay School, Willis is looking ahead toward cross country season.

"This was getting a baseline for what I'm capable of running in a 5K during cross country," explained Willis. "I'm happy with it. It's about what I've done here in previous years, and I was only able to train half the summer because I had mono. I'm still trying to get my fitness back."


Running out of section three, Katie Sack was the women's runner-up, placing 51st overall in 5:53.56. Jillian Heddaeus was the third woman in the mile and 56th overall in 5:59.87. Kenya Rich was the top woman master and seventh female finisher, 64th overall in 6:23.88.

In all, 204 athletes ran a mile at the ninteenth annual Breakfast On The Track. Many of them enjoyed the free pancakes served at trackside, something that Roger Bannister never had at Iffley Road Stadium. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the race.

Milford and Willis make it all Maclay at the Prefontaine Classic

At the 2014 Prefontaine Classic, Maclay runners Clay Milford, Jake Mazziotta, and James McClure led most of the 5K race running together. Clay Milford jumped ahead late to get the win, and the trio led the Maclay boys to a win over a field of six teams. There is, after all, no reason to change a winning plan. Milford, Mazziotta, and McClure were together again after the race.


"We just wanted the win today. We knew our top three were good, but four was a problem. Our fourth man is in Denver at a concert."


"We're gonna tell him we lost by one point."


The times at least were different in 2015. Milford ran 17:39, Mazziotta 17:41, and McClure 17:48. Gatlin Nennstiel of Aucilla Christian was fourth in 18:13, while 2014's fourth-place runner, Wakulla's Bryce Cole, was fifth in 18:45.


Cole's Wakulla team came very close to overtaking Maclay, scoring 36 points to Maclay's 32. Florida State University School was third with 104 points.

In the girls' competition, Maclay junior Caroline Willis enjoyed a narrow 20:48 to 20:51 victory over 2014 Prefontaine Classic champion Haleigh Martin of Maclay. The Maclay girls also put Molly McCann (3rd, 21:46) and Rachel Rumana (5th, 22:40) in the top ten, then finished their scoring with Ramsay Grant (14th, 24:49) and Madison Perkins (15th, 24:59). That gave Maclay 38 points and the 2015 Prefontaine Classic team title. Scoring 65 points, the Wakulla girls were second in the seven-team field. Led by the 23:05 fifth-place finish of Anna Lee Trest, Aucilla Christian scored 78 points to take third.

Milford and Willis lead a Maclay sweep in Monticello

There's a little sliver of the University of Florida on US 90 just west of Monticello, Florida--the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences extension office. No UF Gator athletes were present, though, on Saturday morning, 19 September 2015, when Aucilla Christian Academy hosted their second annual Warrior Cross-Country Rampage on the IFAS grounds. Maclay School Marauders were definitely in attendance, because athletes in their colors swept all the top honors at the meeting. Maclay frosh Clayburn Milford won the high school boys' 5K race in 17:16, as Marauders took the first four places on their way to the team title with a mathematically unbeatable score of 23 points. In the high school girls' 5K Maclay also took the team title, scoring 29 points behind the first-place finish of Marauder junior Caroline Willis.


As an eighth-grader, Clay Milford had run two races for Maclay at the 2014 Warrior Rampage--the middle school two mile and the high school 5K. This year that wasn't an option--Milford had moved on to high school age, and no middle school race was offered anyway. So the Maclay School frosh had to be content with winning the high school boys 5K in 2015, edging teammate James McClure 17:16 to 17:17 for the top spot. Maclay runners also took the next two places, with junior Jake Mazziotta third in 17:20 and senior George Gwynn fourth in 17:43. Maclay junior Gannon Hundley, 15th overall in 19:04, was his team's fifth scorer, giving the Marauders 23 points and first place in a field of nine teams. Wakulla score 40 points to place second, led by the sixth-place finish of their junior-year runner, Bryce Cole (18:14). Chiles was third with 108 points, led by junior Zachary Jackson (13th, 18:52).

In the 2014 Warrior Rampage high school girls' 5K Wakulla's Haleigh Martin and Maclay's Caroline Willis had dueled for over three kilometers before Martin broke away, going on to win the race by half a minute over runner-up Willis. Martin and Willis met again in the 2015 race, but this time the victory belonged to Willis. The Maclay junior won the 5K in 20:11, eight seconds ahead of the 20:19 posted by runner-up Lindsay James, a Maclay seventh-grader. Wakulla junior Martin was third in 21:01.


Chiles frosh Emily Culley was fourth in 21:22, but Maclay took the next two places with juniors Molly McCann (5th, 21:36) and Rachel Rumana (6th, 22:50). Senior Mary Kathryn Healy (16th, 24:15) finished the scoring for Maclay, and the Marauders had 29 points and first place. Chiles was second with 66 points, and Wakulla third with 75.

Schmidt and Skalski top Miller Landing Madness

On Saturday morning, 22 August 2015, Roger Schmidt of Capital City Runners won Gulf Winds Track Club's Miller Landing Madness 8K. His five-mile run through Tallahassee's Phipps Park wasn't without incident though.


"I got a sweet gum tree ball stuck to my spikes," said Schmidt.


Schmidt weathered that and the other perils of cross country running to finish the race in 28:45, almost half a kilometer ahead of the next runner. Maclay School cross country coach Gary Droze was the top master runner in the race, coming in second overall in 30:31. Jane Skalski won the women's title, placing 21st overall in 38:07. Deborah Congdon was the first woman master and fifth female finisher, 40th overall in 42:40. 126 athletes finished the race.


The 8K started just after 8:00 AM, with runners in the Miller Landing Madness 5K sharing the first mile or so of the course--or all the running up to the first time through the water hazard. Roger Schmidt was content to follow the front runners in the 5K for that early part of the run. After all, the athletes in the shorter race would be running faster, right?


"I ran 29:03 last year. That's about a 5:50 per mile average," said Schmidt. "I thought those guys would pull me through pretty fast, but we ended up going through the mile in 6:05."


After the 5K runners turned off to do their shorter loop, Schmidt picked up the pace, running faster than the 5K field, running faster than anyone in the park that morning.


"I didn't hear any pitter patter of footsteps behind me or anything," said Schmidt. "It got lonely on the back part of the course."


Schmidt endured the solitude on his way to posting a winning time of 28:45. Behind him, master runner Gary Droze pulled away from fellow master Bryan Koon to take second in 30:31. Koon was third in 31:00.


The woman to reach the water was Victoria Richmond. At that point, a mile into the race, Jane Skalski was over half a minute behind Richmond and fifth in the women's standings. But Skalski was moving up. With a mile to go, Skalski was leading the women, ten seconds ahead of Richmond and pulling away. At the finish line Skalski was the first woman across, running 38:07. Richmond was the women's runner-up, finishing 27th overall in 39:22. Emma Spencer was third for the ladies, 28th overall in 40:00.

In the period leading up to the Miller Landing Madness, Roger Schmidt was preparing for the Berlin Marathon later in the fall.


"The volume of training for the marathon is crazy," said Schmidt.


The mileage did nothing to hurt Schmidt's race. In the 5K, James McClure also had a twist to his training. The Maclay sophomore is taking weight training as his P.E. class. However that may affect his running during cross country season this fall, it didn't harm his performance in the Miller Landing Madness. McClure won the race in 18:16, running five seconds faster than in the 2014 Miller Landing Madness 5K. To get the win, McClure had to outkick another Maclay cross country runner, junior Jake Mazziotta. Mazziotta was second in 18:17. Maclay frosh Clay Milford placed third in 18:24. The top master runner in the 5K was Michael Martinez, 11th overall in 19:26.


Maclay junior Caroline Willis also improved on her 2014 Miller Landing Madness performance. Taking the women's title for the second year in a row, Willis finished 20th overall in 20:33, 40 seconds faster than her previous year's time. Maclay junior cross country runner Molly McCann was the second female finisher in the 5K, coming in 52nd overall in 22:40. Taylor County High senior Meagan Giddens (57th, 23:07) edged Wakulla junior Haleigh Martin (58th, 23:09) for the third female spot.


207 athletes finished the 5K.

Joseph Ashebo of Holy Comforter Episcopal was an early leader in the Miller Landing Madness 3K, with Swift Creek Middle School eighth-grader Alyson Churchill pushing him. Maclay School eighth-grader Johnny McClure overtook both of them, then went on to win the race in 11:14. Florida State University School seventh grader Jahaz Morgan took second in 11:25. Alyson Churchill was the first female finisher, placing third in 11:34--the fastest girls' time ever in the Miller Landing Madness 3K. Swift Creek eighth-grader Megan Churchill was the second girl across the finish line, coming in ninth overall in 11:52.


205 athletes finished the 3K.

Caroline Willis and Jake Mazziotta lead a Maclay sweep of District 3-1A

If you're at a cross-country event at Maclay School in Tallahassee, the stormwater retention pond is going to come up in conversation. The District 3-1A Meet on Tuesday morning, 28 October 2014, was no exception.


"We were in the right place at the right time," declared Maclay Coach Gary Droze. "I usually have to run the hose to get some water in there, but they filled it for the adventure race last weekend. And then the fire department came yesterday and tested the hydrants on campus."


The course takes the runners through the pond three times, and it was starting to sound like it would be three trips through a quagmire. It had been dry in Tallahassee, though, and all that watery input had left the pond only slightly more moist than a heavy dew on the grass.


But athletes don't come to the District meet to play in the mud, anyway. They come to earn a spot in the Regional championship. Four teams had shown up for each race in District 3-1A this year, but only three would qualify. Like a game of musical chairs, when the running was over someone was going to be left out.


The Maclay girls weren't going to be the team without a Region 1 seat. Half a kilometer into the girls' 5K race, Maclay runners already held the first six places, led by defending district champion Caroline Willis. No one caught the Marauder top five. Willis went on to get another District title in 20:45. The next four places also went to Maclay, with sophomore Molly McCann taking second in 20:54, frosh Jainey Coates third in 21:44, sixth-grader Lindsay James fourth in 21:53, and junior Kathleen Whitworth fifth in 22:00. John Paul II sophomore Julia Travis took sixth n 22:09, but Maclay already had a perfect score of 15 points and the win. Aucilla Christian was second with 65 points and John Paul II third with 66, both teams joining Maclay in advancing to the Region 1 meet.

It had been foggy during the girls' race, but it was bright and sunny by 10:00 AM when the boys started. Aucilla Christian sophomore Gatlin Nennstiel went right to the front, building up a lead of nearly 50 meters during the first of three trips around the course. During the second loop, though, Maclay sophomore Jake Mazziotta came after Nennstiel. Mazziotta had outrun Nennstiel at the Cougar Challenge, Bearcat Invitational, and Pre State, but only ten days earlier Gatlin had run four seconds faster than Mazziotta at Aucilla Christian's Warrior Rampage. As Mazziotta closed on Nennstiel, the two left the rest of the field far behind. One of them would be District 3 champion.


With about a kilometer to go, Mazziotta overtook Nennstiel, then began to pull away. The Aucilla Christian Warrior never folded his tent, but Mazziotta continued strong to the finish, winning the race in 17:25. Nennstiel was second in 17:31. The next four places belonged to Maclay Marauders, with junior George Gwynn coming in third in 18:32, frosh Daniel Sweeney fourth in 18:39, frosh Seth Kemeny fifth in 18:43, and junior George Escobar sixth in 18:44. It's impossible to beat a score of 19 points; the District 3 title went to Maclay. Aucilla Christian was second with 57 points, and North Florida Christian scored 78 to take third place and the remaining Region 1 qualifying spot.


The teams that advanced will race next on Saturday morning, 8 November 2014, in the Region 1-1A Championship at Sunnyhill Farm in Tallahassee. From the Region 1 meet, six teams will earn a position on the starting line of the State Finals at Apalachee Regional Park on 15 November 2014.

Lake and Barnes take Miller Landing Madness 8K

Racing over the hills and trails of Tallahassee’s Phipp Park, Chris Lake won Gulf Winds Track Club’s annual Miller Landing Madness 8K on Saturday morning, 23 August 2014. The University of Florida medical student covered the five-mile cross-country course in 28:26, finishing 200 yards ahead of the next runner. Maclay School cross-country coach Gary Droze was the fastest master runner in the race, placing fourth overall in 30:32. Brittney Barnes took the women’s title with a 35:26 effort, coming in 15th overall. Christienne Coutts was the top woman master, finishing 39th overall in 41:27. 154 athletes completed the 8K.


In cross-country running the course itself is a star. This isn’t true on the track, where the venues are all much the same. In the bad old days, athletes would have to be concerned about whether a track was cinder, or clay, or crushed brick. Was the surface loose or well-packed? Was it wet? A prominent part of the 1950s quest for the Four-Minute Mile was the search for good tracks for attempts on the barrier. Thanks to the proliferation of synthetic all-weather tracks, every oval is about the same nowadays. Colors differ, but I never heard an athlete say that they ran faster on a blue track than on a red one.


Each cross-country course is unique, however. That’s also true of road-racing courses, but a cross-country course will even change from day to day, affected by weather and the changing seasons. The grass could be growing or dead, the ground dusty or muddy.


Ever since first bringing the Miller Landing Madness to Phipps Park in 2008, race director Tom Perkins wanted mud. The park is well-drained, though, sloping down to Lake Jackson. Perkins brought in buckets of water one year. The grass appreciated his efforts, but there wasn’t even a puddle when the runners went by. This year, however, a course for the Red Hills Horse Trials had been built through the park. Among the jumps was a water hazard that just happened to be right next to the mile mark of the Miller Landing Madness. Perkins quickly re-routed the runners through the hazard. Water had to be hauled in, and it was about as treacherous as a wading pool, but Perkins had what he wanted.


“Have you seen the water?” Perkins asked me. He asked everyone that.


So the runners in the Miller Landing Madness 8K and 5K had to contend not only with the usual hills and sand, but with two quick splashes through the water during the race. Chris Lake was already leading at the first pass through the water, followed 20 seconds later by Roger Schmidt. Master runner Bryan Koon held the third position with Stephen Cox, Gary Droze, and Brian Manry trailing. Lake stretched out his lead to nearly a minute on the way to the second pass through the water. Schmidt started to close the gap during the last mile, but Lake made it to the finish line ahead of him, 28:26 to 29:03. Cox was a close third in 29:09. Droze overtook Koon, beating him for fourth place and the first master spot, 30:32 to to 31:16.

It was Chris Lake's second win at the Miller Landing Madness; he had also won the 8K race in 2009. Lake wasn't the only repeat winner in Phipps Park, though. Joseph Garcia won the Madness 5K for the third year in a row, running the 3.1-miles in 17:09. Michael Martinez was the first master runner, 11th overall in 19:49. Maclay sophomore Caroline Willis was the first female runner, 25th overall in 21:13. Francee Laywell was the first master woman, 79th overall in 26:58. There were 172 finishers in the 5K.

The 5K was run concurrently with the 8K and the athletes in the shorter race also made two passes through the water. The 3K, run after the longer races, made only one trip through the water, but made up for it with a higher heat index at race time. Maclay School cross-country runner Jonathan McClure splashed and sweated through the 1.86-mile race to win in 11:33. Deerlake Middle School's Emily Molen was running neck-and-neck with Swift Creek's Alyson Churchill late in the race, but Churchill pulled ahead during the last 400 meters to take the top female's spot, 12:34 to 12:41. Churchill and Molen were 5th and 6th overall in a field of 173 finishers.
