Trevor Sununu and Ann Centner open the 2020 racing year on a winning note at Bowlegs

Gulf Winds Track Club hosted the 36th annual Bowlegs 5K Run for Scholarship on Saturday morning, 11 January 2020. Before the race, Trevor Sununu was on his feet all night, baking for Panera Bread. Ann Centner had spent the days prior to the race struggling to prepare for her preliminary exams in the Ph.D. program in nutritional science at Florida State University. Real world stress proved to be the common ingredient in athletic world success, as both Sununu and Centner picked up wins at the race. Sununu was first overall, running the 3.1 miles around Tallahassee’s Innovation Park in 16:36. Centner was the first woman in the race for the second year in a row, placing third overall in 17:54.

Athletes with past Bowlegs experience had come to expect chilly conditions for the January race, perhaps seasoned with a bit of rain as they negotiated the hills of Innovation Park. The hills were there, but the weather was unusual, with racetime temperatures in the 70s and strong wind gusts.


“About 25 to 30 miles per hour,” estimated meteorologist Ryan Truchelut, who turned an 18:20 that morning.


“The wind was tougher than the hill,” declared Chris O’Kelley. O’Kelley finished the race second in 17:35.

The gusts were at the runners’ back when they began racing at 9:00 AM, and the tailwind may have contributed to a fast early pace for many. Sununu led them all, finishing the first mile half a minute before the next runner.


“I started off way too fast,” said Sununu. “4:55 for the first mile. The second mile was 5:10 and the third 5:28, about the pace I wanted to run. I was only aiming to break 17:00.”


Sununu’s 16:36 was well under 17:00 and nearly a minute ahead of O’Kelley’s runner-up mark of 17:35. Charlie Johnson, winner of the 2018 Bowlegs, took third in the men’s standings and fourth overall in 18:06. It was Johnson’s first Bowlegs as a master runner.

“As soon as I turned 40 I got plantar fasciitis,” observed Johnson.


Ann Centner had battled Sheryl Rosen and Katja Blunden for the women’s title throughout the 2019 Bowlegs. During the 2020 race, though, Centner was unchallenged by the rest of the women’s field, finishing the 5000 meters more than 600 meters ahead of the next woman.

“The wind was pretty tough,” said Centner. “There was no one to draft off of.”


Even without pacers or windshields, Centner still went 17:56, even faster than the 17:59 she posted in the previous Bowlegs. Centner is the only woman to have broken 18:00 at Bowlegs in the last 21 years, and now she has done it twice.


Alyssa Terry was the second woman in the race, placing sixteenth overall in 20:27. Brittney Barnes took third in the women's standings and 24th overall in 21:29. Laura Reina was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, 36th overall in 22:41.

172 athletes finished the 2020 Bowlegs 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the race.

From 1985 to 1994 the Bowlegs 5K was run on the main campus of Florida State University,
starting and finishing near Tully Gym, on USATF certified course FL88014BH.

From 1995 to 2019 the Bowlegs 5K was run in Innovation Park, starting and finishing near
the College of Engineering on USATF certified course FL95008DL. The course was later
recertified with number FL12001EBM.
