Ryan Truchelut and Leonardo Canete take it to the wire at the Salute To Prefontaine 5K

On Saturday morning, 23 September 2023, Gulf Winds Track Club's Prefontaine Forest 5K returned to its latest home--Wallwood Boy Scout Reservation near Wetumpka, Florida--for the 46th running of the event. Ryan Truchelut edged master runner Leonardo Canete for the win, both men clocked in 19:17. Brittney Barnes was the top woman in the race, placing ninth overall in 21:41.

Almost 20 miles and the width of Lake Talquin west of Tallahassee, Wallwood is several hundred acres of woodland on the edge of the Ocklochnee River valley. Creeks emptying into the river have carved ravines lined with hardwoods; the 3.1 miles of the Prefontaine Forest 5K took runners in and out of those ravines and even down to the shores of Lake Talquin. The 2023 version of that trek started at 9:00 AM. Leonardo Canete, runner-up in the 2022 Prefontaine, charged to the front. His lead grew until he was too far ahead for the rest of the to see.


"I had lost sight of Leo about a mile and a half," said Ryan Truchelut. "But then, at the out-and-back to the lake, I saw him behind me."

Mid race, where the course made a loop, Canete had gone around the loop an extra time. He wasn't the only athlete to make that wrong turn, but it had still put him behind the other leaders. With a kilometer to go, Canete trailed Brad Busboom and Truchelut by almost twenty seconds. He labored to make up that deficit, overtaking Busboom and then Truchelut.


"Leo caught me at about three miles," said Truchelut. "I stayed with him till 40 yards to go. Any race that I can reduce to a 40-yard dash, I have a chance to win."

The race came down to a sprint to the finish line. Truchelut won that sprint by a fraction of a second, crossing first in 19:17. Canete took second, also in 19:17. Brad Busboom placed third in 19:28.


Brittney Barnes was the first woman in a race for the second time in two weeks. Before her 21:41 win at the Prefontaine, Barnes had led the women's field at the Sickle Cell 5K on 9 September 2023. One of the athletes behind Barnes at the Sickle Cell race was Alexis Mayfield, a runner on the cross-country team at Swift Creek Middle School. Mayfield was second in the women's standings at Prefontaine, placing tenth overall in 22:09. Tallahassee triathlete Stephanie Liles-Weyant was the first woman master and the third female finisher, twentieth overall in 23:55. A past champion of the Pre, Liles-Weyant had won the women's division at the 2006 race.

86 athletes finished the 2023 Salute To Prefontaine 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the race.

Triumphs for Truchelut and Terry at the Shamrock Scurry

In Tallahassee, Florida, the azaleas, dogwoods, and wisteria aren't always blooming on the day of the annual Shamrock Scurry 5K. For instance, because of the "Storm of the Century" in 1993, the race had to be delayed till May, long after the flowers were gone. But in more than 30 outings, the race has visited the streets of Killearn Estates on a Saturday in March--such as Saturday, 4 March 2023, when blossoms lined the course. That day, Ryan Truchelut won the Shamrock Scurry by over a minute, covering the hilly 3.1-mile course in 18:43. The women's competition was closer, with Ph.D. student Alyssa Terry going 21:25 to outkick Charlotte Sikes and Savannah Stanley.

The first Shamrock Scurry was in 1979, starting and finishing at Killearn United Methodist Church. The course was much the same in 2023, also starting and finishing at the church.


"It's easy to go out too fast in this race because most of the first half is downhill," noted Truchelut.


Unfortunately, that means to get back to the church, there's a lot of uphill during the second half of the race.

Trent Parsons, a cross-country runner at Montford Middle School, set the early pace for the field. Truchelut followed, hitting the first mile in 5:58 before taking charge.


"It was just after the first mile," recalled Trucheulut. "I had a good lead on him before the uphills started."


Up and down, Truchelut left the field far behind on his way back to the church, where he arrived in a winning 18:43. Tallahassee master runner Mike Martinez overtook Parsons late in the race to place second in 19:46. Parson was third in 19:54.

400 meters into the Shamrock Scurry, a pair of middle school athletes led the women's field--Swift Creek sixth-grader Charlotte Sikes and Montford eighth-grader Savannah Stanley. 40 meters behind the two harriers, Jillian Heddaeus and Alyssa Terry shared the third position. Sikes and Stanley were still leading the women with a kilometer to go. Heddaeus hd fallen back. Terry, the 2019 Shamrock Scurry women's champ, continued to trail by 40 meters as the athletes headed toward Pancake Hill, the final climb on the course.

"I didn't think I could catch them," said Terry. "But I finally did on the last tenth of a mile. They had slowed down, but they sped up when I caught up."


Terry sped up as well, and was a step ahead at the finish line where she arrived ninth overall in 21:25--one second faster than she had gone four years earlier when she won her first Shamrock Scurry title. Sikes was also clocked in 21:25, the women's runner-up and tenth overall. Stanley placed third in the women's standings and eleventh overall in 21:28. Heddaeus, once a contender for third, was the fourth women and fourteenth overall in 22:38. Ali Kelly was the first woman master and seventh female finisher, 32nd overall in 24:47.

As in years past, a pancake and sausage breakfast at the church followed the race--more appetizing than a finisher medal. 308 athletes finished the 2023 Shamrock Scurry 5K, and another 141 completed the one-mile fun run. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee, Florida chip-timed the races.

For Ryan Truchelut and Katie Sherron, the best part of waking up was the Mile

Mens sana in corpore sano. A healthy mind in a healthy body. Ryan Truchelut and Katie Sherron have both those boxes checked. Dr. Truchelut, the co-Founder, President, and Chief Meteorologist of WeatherTiger, has a Ph.D. in meteorology. Dr. Sherron, a professor at Florida State University, has a Ph.D. in economics. If you want evidence for healthy bodies, examine the results of the 23rd annual Gulf Winds Track Club Mile at the Breakfast on the Track. Dr. Truchelut won that Tallahassee, Florida race on Saturday morning, 7 August 2021, circling the Maclay School track in 4:46.27. Dr. Sherron was the first woman in the field, placing sixth overall in 5:17.28.

The Breakfast on the Track is an athletics meet with only one event--the one-mile run. There were seven sections of the mile in the 2021 meeting; both Truchelut and Sherron were in the first section. Jonathan Stern led for most of the first three laps of the four-lap race, but he was overtaken by Truchelut on the bell lap. It was still close on the home stretch, but Truchelut made it across the line first, winning 4:46.27 to 44:46.60. Tristan Lanasa took third in 5:02.85. Brookwood School frosh Kent Grayson, a Thomasville, Georgia athlete, took fourth in 5:11.35, well off his 5:01.71 PR for the slightly shorter 1600-meter run. Former Florida State University cross-country runner Christian Minor placed fifth in 5:13.35.


Dr. Katie Sherron, the first woman in the mile, finished a few steps behind Minor in 5:17.28--and just ahead of her husband, Zach DeVeau, seventh in 5:17.73. The battle for second place in the women's standings was between two middle school runners, eighth-grader Clifton Lewis and seventh-grader Annabelle Wiktorski. Lewis prevailed with a 5:53.50, good for nineteenth overall. Wiktorski, a Montford Middle School cross-country runner, was 21st overall in 6:03.31.

Dan Manausa was the fastest master runner in the mile, placing twelfth overall in 5:40,81 and eleventh in the men's standings. Michelle Allen was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, 23rd overall in 6:08.52.


91 athletes finished the 2021 Gulf Winds Track Club Mile at the Breakfast on the Track. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the race.

Ryan Truchelut and Amy Hines were swift on the sand at the Paul Hoover 5K

It isn’t true that in 1843, when Wakulla County was created out of Leon County, the dividing line was drawn where the red clay ended and the sand of the coastal plain began. The sand actually starts just south of Tallahassee, Florida before you're out of Leon County. It continues south into Wakulla, and from there all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. So it is true that once you cross the county line into Wakulla, you’ll find nothing but sand, punctuated with the occasional limestone outcropping. That includes Florida's Wakulla Springs State Park, and it also includes the course of the sixth annual Paul Hoover Memorial 5K Freedom Run inside the park.


Geology will tell you why all that sand is there. Ryan Truchelut relied on another science to explain the state of the sand at the race.

“The sand was actually pretty firm today,” said Truchelut. “There were a few loose patches but nothing like the sugar sand of past years. It’s due to the wet conditions the last couple of weeks. But as a meteorologist I could talk about the weather and its effect on the sand for quite a while.”


Rather than lecture about the sand on Saturday morning, 30 June 2018, Truchelut raced on it, winning the Freedom 5K in 18:21. Amy Hines was the first woman in the race, placing third overall in 19:10.

In spite of the frequent rains that Truchelut mentioned, it was a sunny morning when the Freedom 5K started just after 8:00 AM. Myles Gibson led the early charge off of the park’s paved drives and onto the trail headed to Cherokee Sink, the site of the mid-race turn-around. A crop inspector, Gibson had traveled all the way from his home in Donalsonville, Georgia for the race.


“The tomatoes are done and I switched my sweet corn days because I wanted to run this race,” said Gibson. “I decided to go out hard from the start today. I was in first for about a quarter mile, but my pace just cratered when I hit the sand.”

That was where Truchelut took over.


“I passed Myles at about a third of a mile,” said Truchelut. “After that I was running alone, just me and the sand. I tried to work on my form.


“It was pretty uneventful.”

It was for Truchelut while he cruised home unchallenged in a winning 18:21. Brad Busboom picked off the fading Gibson to take second in 18:40. Mason McCord, a junior on the Wakulla High cross-country team, also overtook Gibson, placing third in the men's standings and fourth overall in 19:44. A few steps behind McCord at the finish line, Gibson was the first master runner in the race, taking fifth overall in 19:48.


With the eye of a cross-country runner, Amy Hines noticed where the good footing was on the course.

“It seemed better in the shady spots,” said Hines. “The sand seemed harder packed.”


Perhaps Hines had a gift for finding those shady spots, because her 19:10 was the fastest time ever posted by a woman at the Freedom Run. The previous women’s course record was 19:51, set in the 2015 race by Katie Sherron. No other women have broken 20:00 at the Freedom Run.


After running together early in the race, Kat Sack took the second women's spot over Alyssa Terry, 21:55 to 22:04. Sack and Terry were seventeenth and eighteenth overall. Summer Williams, a senior on the Florida High cross-country team, was the fourth woman and nineteenth overall in 22:16. Angela Dempsey was the first woman master and sixth female finisher, 25th overall in 23:00.

Hines' 19:10 wasn't the only record that morning. There were also a record number of finishers in the race, 213. It was the first time that more than 200 athletes had finished the Freedom Run.


The Freedom Run 5K was established in 2013 as a fundraiser for Coach Paul Hoover's cross-country team at Wakulla High. After Hoover's tragic death in 2017, the Wakulla High Cross-Country Boosters continued the race as a memorial to Coach Hoover. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the 2018 Paul Hoover Memorial 5K Freedom Run.

Truchelut and Sherron go like a gale at the Hurricane 5K

The Capital Area Red Cross's annual Robin Lotane Memorial Hurricane Run 5K has been held in Tallahassee, Florida during ten different North Atlantic Basin hurricane seasons. For tropical drama, 2017 has to rank high on that list of ten. For the second year in a row, Tallahassee was in the path of a storm, Hurricane Irma. Texas, Puerto Rico, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi each saw hurricane landfalls. Even Ireland was under a hurricane warning. There have been more active seasons in the North Atlantic, but that was before there was a Hurricane Run.


So perhaps it was appropriate that a meteorologist, Dr. Ryan Truchelut, won the tenth annual Hurricane 5K on Saturday morning, 7 October 2017, running 18:27 on the streets of Tallahassee's Southwood section. Dr. Katie Sherron was second overall in 18:47, taking the women's title for the third time since 2011. Sherron holds the women's record in the Hurricane 5K, the 17:34 she posted in the 2015 race.


Kurt Dietrich was second in the men's standings and third overall in 18:55. Zach DeVeau was the third male finisher and fourth overall in 19:01. Fairview Middle School cross-country runner Patrick Koon was the fourth male finisher and fifth overall in 19:09. Bryan Koon was the fastest master runner in the Hurricane 5K, placing fifth in the men's standings and sixth overall in 19:11. As another hurricane connection, Bryan Koon was Florida's Director of Emergency Management through the peak of the 2017 hurricane season.


Alyssa Terry was the women's runner-up, placing ninth overall in 20:49. Stacie Elliott took third in the women's standings and twelfth overall in 22:19, while Mary Jane Hayden was the fourth woman and twentieth overall in 24:01. Paula O'Neill was the top woman master in the 5K, the fifth female finisher and 22nd overall in 24:52. O'Neill was the women's champ at the 2013 Hurricane Run.


121 athletes finished the Capital Area Red Cross's 2017 Robin Lotane Hurricane 5K. Miles and Minutes, LLC, of Tallahassee timed the race.

From 2008 to 2011, the race was held in Southwood. From 2012 to 2014 the Red
Cross moved the Hurricane 5K to the Tom Brown Park area. In 2015 the race
returned to Southwood.

Truchelut and Bademan make an impression at the Monet 5K

Ryan TruchelutAs a doctoral candidate at Florida State University, Ryan Truchelut doesn't have a whole lot of spare time.


"My dissertation is due in a week," explained Truchelut. "I haven't been sleeping a lot."


But on Sunday morning, 17 May 2015, when Alliance Française of Tallahassee staged the Monet 5K on the FSU campus, Truchelut found time to race, even with the finish line of his Ph.D. research approaching.


"It was near my church, so it was really two trips in one," said Truchelut. "It's the only race where they're sure to pronounce my name correctly. And it was a good workout for summer track."


James Harrison, Ryan TruchelutIt was good that Truchelut was able to find a way to attend, because he was the fastest of the 80 athletes in the Monet 5K, winning the 3.1-mile race in 19:13. James Harrison, a first-year student at Florida State and an alumnus of the Lemon Bay High cross-country team, was able to stay with Truchelut for 800 meters or so, but no longer.


"He was gone by the hill on Call Street," recalled Truchelut.


After that Truchelut was alone and out front, with no distractions from the competition for more than four kilometers on his way to the finish line. By the time he crossed that line, he was more than 300 meters ahead of the next runner.


"I wanted to hum La Marseillaise as I crossed the finish line," said Truchelut. "But I was too out of breath. I hummed it at the awards presentation, though."


Martha BademanHarrison took the runner-up spot in 20:33. Jim Schaeffer was the first master runner in the race, placing third overall in 21:52.


Jena Mickel was the early leader in the women's competition. Unlike Truchelut, her lead didn't go unchallenged. Martha Bademan wasn't going to let Mickel steal the Monet 5K.


"When I started there were two girls ahead of me," said Bademan. "I passed one right away and then kind of crept up on the next one. I caught her on Jefferson Street."


"The next one" was Mickel, whom Bademan overtook about halfway through the race. Bademan built up a healthy lead during the second half of the 5K, ultimately taking the women's title and finishing seventh overall in 23:49. Mickel was runner-up on the women's side, coming in ninth overall in 24:01. Julia Sura was the top woman master and third female finisher, placing 13th overall in 26:04.

Truchelut and Rosen hit hard on the TMH hills

"Mile 2.9 is not a good place to put a hill," said Truchelut.


Yet on Saturday morning, 3 January 2015, that's exactly where the athletes competing in the inaugural Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare For Life 5K had to make the climb past the Ghazvini Center on Surgeons Drive, less than 400 meters from the finish line. And in spite of Truchelut's poor opinion of the slope, that's exactly where he got away from David Altmaier and won the 3.1-mile race, running 18:40.


When the race started at 9:10 AM, the streets around Tallahassee Memorial Hospital were wet from a pre-dawn downpour. Ryan Truchelut led the field south on Medical Drive to Miccosukee Road, where the runners turned east. On Miccosukee David Altmaier overtook Gary Galvez to move into second place. Altmaier remained several steps behind Truchelut through the first two miles, while the two leaders left the rest of the runners farther and farther behind. Then on the third mile, Altmaier started to close.

"The last mile was rough," recalled Truchelut.


Altmaier did his best to make it rough. He was almost even with Truchelut when the two runners turned from Miccosukee onto Surgeons Drive with just over half a kilometer to go. On Surgeons, Altmaier grabbed the lead, getting a few steps ahead of Truchelut 400 meters from the finish. But that was the base of the Surgeons Drive hill. Truchelut regained the lead on the long uphill, then started to open a gap on Altmaier. With just a few yards to go, the runners reached the crest and flashed downhill to the finish line. Truchelut reached home before Altmaier, 18:40 to 18:50. Gary Galvez was third in 19:33. The first male master was Michael Quiggins, sixth overall in 20:31.


"I had a lot of holiday sludge to shake out today," Truchelut said after the race. "It was a good tune up."


Sheryl Rosen and Stephanie Liles-WeyantTallahassee lawyer Sheryl Rosen also shined on the final hill of the TMH For Life 5K. In the early going of the women's competition, Rosen held second place, following triathlete Stephanie Liles-Weyant away from the hospital on Miccosukee Road. On the return trip, when the two runners turned onto Surgeons Drive, Liles-Weyant was still a few steps up on Rosen. Rosen had started to move, however. By 400 meters to go she had overtaken Liles-Weyant. After that the hill was the difference. Rosen crested the slope ahead of Liles-Weyant and was the first woman across the finish line, fourth overall in 19:42. Liles-Weyant was the women's runner-up and top master, fifth overall in 19:55.


"I'm trying to get in 5K shape," said Rosen. "I'm trying to get good times at Bowlegs and Run For The Cookies. A faster 5K pace should lead to a faster pace in my half marathon and other longer races."


142 athletes finished the Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare For Live 5K. Chip timing was provided by Gulf Winds Track Club.
