Jonathan Stern and Andi Vilardo roll up more Trail Series wins at Red Bug

On Saturday evening, 18 June 2022, over a hundred athletes lined up north of Tallahassee, Florida at Forestmeadows Athletic Center for the second race in Gulf Winds Track Club's 2022 Summer Trail Series, the Red Bug Trail Race. There were several past winners of Trail Series races in the field. Master runner Leonardo Canete had two Trail Series wins. Daniel Wurgler had one. Zach DeVeau had six, more than any other athlete on the circuit. But when the seven-kilometer race was over, Jonathan Stern had picked up his Trail Series victory, and Andi Vilardo was first in the women's standings for the second time.

Stern's winning time was 32:19, putting him nearly 300 meters ahead of the field--more than double his margin of victory in the first race of the 2022 series, the Swamp Forest Trail Race on 28 May 2022. Leonardo Canete was runner-up in that earlier race and took second again at Red Bug, running 33:35. Kyle Kraeft was third in 34:50.


Andi Vilardo, the top woman in the race, finished sixteenth overall in 44:01. A rising eighth-grader at Montford Middle School, Vilardo is a cross-country runner on her school's team. The second woman in the race was Kendall Meikenhous, 25th overall in 47:02. In a showdown for the top woman master spot, Katie Clark finished just six seconds ahead of Katasha Cornwell, 47:57 to 8:03. Clark was the third woman and 27th overall, Cornwell the fourth woman and 29th overall.


111 athletes finished the 2022 Red Bug Trail Race. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the event.

At Swamp Forest, Jonathan Stern and Andi Vilardo lead the return of GWTC Summer Trail Races

In Tallahassee, Florida's Phipps Park on Saturday morning, 28 May 2022, Gulf Winds Track Club opened the ninth season of its Summer Trail Series of races. The debut event of the four-race circuit was the Swamp Forest Trail Race, and Jonathan Stern won that opener by more than half a minute, running the seven kilometers in 28:08. Andi Vilardo was the top athlete in the women's standings, placing 21st overall in 38:29.

It was 33rd Summer Trail Series race since 2013, the year Bobby York established the series. It was also the largest yet, with 141 athletes on hand for the 8:00 AM start. Among that record-sized field were several past winners of Summer Trail Series races, Leonardo Canete, Jonathan Stern, and Daniel Wurgler, each of whom posted wins during the 2021 season. Those former champs were heading the field early in the race, but Stern was in front of them all. Stern had the lead at the halfway point of the race, 15 seconds up on Canete. Wurgler was running in third, another five seconds back. Those positions held for the rest of the race, with Stern taking first in 28:08, Canete second in 28:42, and Wurgler third in 28:49. For the fifth time in a row, Canete was the first master runner in a Series race.


Likewise, Andi Vilardo was leading the women's field at the midpoint of the race. Not a stranger to the trails, Vilardo ran cross-country for Montford Middle School during 2021, her seventh-grade season. Stacie Taylor was seven seconds behind Vilardo, followed by Kendall Meikenhous and Juliana Krueger. Vilardo maintained her position and claimed the women's title in 38:29. Overtaking Taylor and Meikenous, Krueger finished runner-up for the women, placing 22nd overall in 38:44. Taylor was the third woman, 25th overall in 39:00, while Meikenhous was fourth in the women's standings and 29th overall in 39:45. Katie Clark was the first woman master and the sixth female finisher, 32nd overall in 40:39.

The course for the Swamp Forest Trail Race was run on the trail system of Phipps Park, mostly on single-track paths maintained by the Tallahassee Parks and Recreation Department. The race started and finished off Miller Landing Road near Gate A, atop the rim of the Lake Jackson basin, with much of the first half of the race spent running downhill toward the lake. Although the athletes never quite reached the water, they still had to spend the latter stages of the race climbing back up to the finish line.


After the Swamp Forest Trail Race, three events remained in Gulf Winds Track Club's 2022 Summer Trail Series--the Red Bug Trail Race at Forestmeadows Athletic Center on 18 June 2022, the Maclay Gardens Trail Race at Maclay Gardens State Park on 16 July 2022, and the Cadillac Trail Race in Tom Brown Park on 20 August 2022.

Jonathan Stern and Clifton Lewis pluck wins at Maclay Gardens

On Saturday morning, 24 July 2021, Jonathan Stern was in a hurry. He was in a hurry to get into the lead of the Maclay Gardens Trail Race. He was in a hurry to finish the nine-kilometer course through the Overstreet Tract of Maclay Gardens State Park, north of Tallahassee, Florida. But when he had finished, Stern had won the third race in Gulf Winds Track Club's Summer Trail Race Series, running 37:48. Thirteen-year-old Clifton Lewis was first in the women's division, placing eighth overall in 44:06.

It had been a dry year in Tallahassee. On the morning of the race, there was no water at all in the creek that carried overflow from Lake Overstreet. Nevertheless, there had been enough recent rain that the air was heavy with humidity, typical of July in Florida's Big Bend. The grass was dew-covered, and the ground itself was moist. Those were the conditions when the race got started, just a few minutes after 8:00 AM.


And just a few seconds after that start, Jonathan Stern was setting the pace for the field. A former cross-country and track athlete at Lake Forest College, Stern was closely followed by master runner Leonardo Canete. Two weeks earlier Canete had won the second event of this years Gulf Winds Trail Series, the Swamp Forest Trail Race. But the Maclay Gardens Race belonged to Stern. Stern continued to lead and took first in 37:48, finishing well over 200 meters ahead of the next runner. Tristan Lanasa ran 38:58 for second, his best placing yet in this year's Trail Series. Michael Nesius was third in 39:22. Canete was the first master runner in the race, coming in fourth overall in 39:34.

The Maclay Gardens Trail Race was Stern's debut on the Summer Trail Race circuit as well as his first Trail Series win. The first three Trail Series events in 2021 had three different male winners--Daniel Wurgler in the Tom Brown Park Trail Race, Leonardo Canete in the Swamp Forest Trail Race, and now Stern in the Maclay Gardens Trail Race. The women, on the other hand, had a repeat winner in Clifton Lewis. Lewis got her first win of the 2021 circuit at the Tom Brown Trail Race, then added a second victory at the Maclay Gardens Trail Race with a winning 44:06.


Amelia Bryant was second in the women's standings, finishing ninth overall in 44:55. Bryant had been the first woman in the Swamp Forest Trail Race. Hannah Hosay, an alum of the Maclay School cross-country team, was the third woman and tenth overall in 45:06. Ruffian Tyner was the first woman master and seventh female finisher, 29th overall in 53:19.
