Kyle Kraeft and Signe Ulsamer win the Swamp Forest Trail 20 on a fast day in Phipps Park

The course for the Gulf Winds Track Club's tenth annual Swamp Forest Trail Race was a loop just short of eleven kilometers, winding through Tallahassee's Phipps Park. Athletes run one, two, or three laps, depending on the race in which they're competing. Somewhere on the second kilometer of the course--or possibly the third--I spied Jeff Bryant shuffling along.

"I really just came to help out today," explained Bryant. "But when I found out I was the only one who had run the race all nine times, I had to try to do at least one lap."

Gotta keep the streak going.

Bryant may be the only athlete to have done all ten Swamp Forest Trail races, but he wasn't the only athlete returning to the event. Kyle Kraeft, who had won the three-lapper in 2020 and 2023, was back at Phipps Park on Saturday morning, 6 January 2024, to win again--this time in 2:40:17. Likewise, the defending women's champ, master runner Signe Ulsamer, revisited the race in 2024 and added another women's title, placing eighth overall in 3:44:44.

The three Swamp Forest Trail races are sometimes posted as 6-¾ miles, 13-½ miles, and 20 miles. Other times, you'll see them listed as a quarter marathon, a half marathon, and a three-quarters marathon. There is a difference of opinion as to how long the runs actually are, but no one who does the race argues that the courses are short. After negotiating one or more laps of hills, treacherous footing, and narrow bridges, the distances likely seem understated.

Soon after leaving the starting line, Kyle Kraeft was ahead of every other competitor in the three-lap race. Daniel Korecky was the closest pursuer, followed by Bryan Gensits and master runner Mike Tercyak. No one challenged Kraeft, but before the end of the first lap Gensits had overtaken Korecky. Tercyak passed Korecky during the second lap, then left Gensits behind during the third circuit. Kraeft, meanwhile, lengthened his lead, going on to win in a course record 2:40:17. Tercyak was the first master runner in the three-lapper, grabbing the runner-up spot in 2:46:30. Gensits was third in 2:48:44 and Korecky fourth in 2:51.37.

Signe Ulsamer
Signe Ulsamer

Signe Ulsamer wasn't always leading the women's field, but in the end she was the only woman to finish the three-quarter marathon. Running more than twenty minutes faster than she had in 2023, Ulsamer took her second straight Swamp Forest women's title with a 3:44:44.

Eleven athletes finished the 2024 Swamp Forest Three-Quarter Marathon.

In the two-lap race, Leonardo Canete kept up the theme of repeat winners, taking first in 1:36:16--his third Swamp Forest Half-Marathon win in a row. It was a convincing win--Canete took the lead almost from the start, never trailed, and ended the race more than two kilometers ahead of the competition. At the end of the first lap, Canete was even a minute ahead of the winner of the quarter-marathon race, Sean Blanton.

"That woman" Katie Sherron scores a 1:27:12 win in the Tails & Trails Half Marathons

Lafayette Heritage Park was near the ten-mile mark of the 2023 Tails and Trails Half Marathon. On Saturday morning, 6 May 2023, I arrived at the park a bit more than an hour after the start of the race. A cyclist was already there.

"That woman was way ahead," he said. "No one else has come by."

I nodded agreement. We waited another minute.

"Have you seen anyone else go by?" he asked.

Katie Sherron
Katie Sherron

I hadn't. It was a long wait for the next athlete, because "that woman," Katie Sherron, ended up winning the trail race by almost six minutes, running 1:27:12. Kyle Kraeft was the first male finisher, placing second overall in 1:33:04.

Founded years ago as the annual five-kilometer Furry Scurry, Tails and Trails has grown to include a 10K, a half marathon, and a one-mile fun run. In 2023 the half marathon was first on the program, starting a few minutes after 7:30 AM. A few meters into the race, Katie Sherron was already leading, racing downhill toward the woods and the Cadillac Trail. Edward Nabong and Kyle Kraeft followed closely, but it wasn't long before Sherron had dropped her escort.

"About two miles or so," she recalled.

Kyle Kraeft

After that, racing through Lafayette Heritage Park to the Alford Greenway and back, Sherron's only company was the scenery and the wildlife, including a Lake Lafayette alligator.

"I saw one out there!" she said. "It was cool. On the land bridge on the way back."

Back on higher ground some miles later, Sherron crossed the finish line first overall in 1:27:12, as well as the first master runner and the first woman.

Tallahassee trail runner Kyle Kraeft led the men's field, placing second overall in 1:33:04. Edward Nabong was the men's runner-up, coming in third overall in 1:35.06. Brennan Ausloos was the third man in, fourth overall in 1:35:21. Jack McDermott was the first male master and the fifth male finisher, sixth overall in 1:38:01. Less than three weeks earlier, "Marathon Jack" had run 3:24:06 in the Boston Marathon.

Morgan Wilson
Morgan Wilson

Morgan Wilson took second in the women's standings, placing sixteenth overall in 1:47:00. A cross-country runner at Florida Gateway College, Wilson had raced in another half marathon in Tallahassee the previous November--the NJCAA National Championship Half Marathon, where she was 38th in 1:44:44. Behind Wilson, Emma Huggins was the third woman in the race, placing seventeenth overall in 1:48:10.

68 athletes finished the 2023 "Tails and Trails" half-marathon.

Kyle Kraeft and Monica Judd romp in the Swamp

Phipps Park lies on the north edge of Tallahassee, Florida. The park is host to hikes and cross-country meets, but is probably best know as the site of the Red Hills Horse Trials. This is a bit unfair, because the horses and their riders only see a small corner of the hundreds of acres and miles of trail in Phipps. Athletes in Gulf Winds Track Club's Swamp Forest Trail Races see a lot more of the park, touring a loop nearly seven miles long. At the seventh annual Swamp Forest Trail Run, entries in the Quarter-Marathon got to see that loop once. Those in the Half-Marathon race toured it twice. Athletes in the Twenty-Mile Challenge made three circuits of the loop. Kyle Kraeft of Tallahassee was the first to finish the three laps on Saturday morning, 4 January 2020, winning the race in 3:02:27. Tallahassee master runner Monica Judd was the first woman in the Twenty Mile, placing fifth overall in 3:02:27.

Geb Kiros, a biostatistics professor at Florida A & M University, was the top master runner in the Twenty Mile, coming in second overall in 3:05:41. Gabe Peters of Tallahassee took third in 3:08:42.

Newton, Georgia athlete Christine Sandbach placed runner-up to Judd in the women's division, finishing seventh overall in 3:34:26. Allison Adamov of Niceville, Florida was the third female finisher and eighth overall in 3:37:49.

The Twenty-Mile Challenge was the longest race at the 2020 edition of the Swamp Forest Trail Races, which had included a Marathon from 2014 to 2019 and even a 50-kilometer race in 2019. The marathon had never attracted more than twenty-five finishers though, and during the first six years of the race more than a few athletes had dropped out after the first three laps of a longer race. Race director Bobby York adjusted the program in 2020, making the three-lapper an event, the Twenty-Mile Challenge. The "shorter" race proved a hit, attracting 36 finishers.
