In Tallahassee, Cadden Maxwell and Megan Churchill were flying at the Firecracker

On Tuesday, 4 July 2023, the United States of America turned 247 years old. In Tallahassee, Florida that same morning, the Capital City Kiwanis Club's Firecracker 5K turned 40. More than 400 athletes turned out in Cascades Park to observe that latter anniversary, including Cadden Maxwell, who won the race in 17:41. Also attending the celebration was Megan Churchill, the first woman in the race and fifth overall in 18:55.

The race started at 8:00 AM on Suwanee Street, with the athletes heading north. One runner darted out in front of the field.


"I don't remember his name, but he was leading for the first two minutes," recalled Cadden Maxwell.

That early leader was Josha Robinson, a rising senior at John Paul II Catholic High School. Maxwell overtook Robinson early in the race, and never had to look back again, running unchallenged on his way to a 17:41 win. Running 18:15, Robinson clung to second.


Behind, Maxwell and Robinson, Tallahassee's Hong-Guo Yu and Michael Rhodes of Perry, Florida dueled for the top master runner spot in the 5K. By the end of the second kilometer, the two had moved up through the field and were also fighting for third. They swapped positions a few times during the race, but Hong-Guo Yu was the first master runner across the finish line, third overall in 18:30, while Rhodes took fourth in 18:50.

A rising junior at Leon High, Maxwell finished his sophomore year high school track season just two months before the Firecracker. On the track, he specialized at 800 meters and 1600 meters, both significantly shorter than the 5000 meters of the Firecracker.


"I adjust really well to the longer distances," said Maxwell. "I like cross-country, where we run 5K, a lot more than track."

The 2023 race was the 40th Firecracker 5K, but it was the ninth to have been run in Cascades Park. The first Firecracker in the Park was the 2014 race, which was also Megan Churchill's first Firecracker.


"Not my first race, but I have been doing this race for a long time," said Churchill. "I love this race!"

You have to look deep into the 2014 results to find Churchill's name. After that, though, she started to get serious about racing. After two years of competing in cross-country for Swift Creek Middle School, Churchill raced for Lincoln High and then Chiles High. She'll be wearing the uniform of a Flagler College Saint during the 2023 cross-country season, her third at that school.


Each year, though, Churchill returned to Firecracker, missing only the 2022 race. 2023 was her eighth. Leading the women's field almost from the start, she threw down her fastest Firecracker performance yet--a winning 18:55. Megan Noonan took second in the women's standings, placing eleventh overall in 20:43. Brittney Barnes, women's champ at the 2016 Firecracker 5K, was the third woman in 2023, eighteenth overall in 21:40. Nancy Proctor was the first woman master, placing eighth in the women's division and 40th overall in 24:05.

418 athletes finished the Capital City Kiwanis' 2023 Firecracker 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the race. Look for the 41st annual Firecracker 5K in Cascades Park on Tuesday morning, 4 July 2024.

From 1983 to 2012 the Firecracker 5000 was run in Gadsden County from
Sycamore to Greensboro.
In 2013 the Firecracker 5000 was run in Tallahassee on trails in Phipps
Park.
In 2014 the Firecracker 5000 was run in Tallahassee from Cascades Park
on USATF Certified Course FL14067EBM.
In 2015 the Firecracker 5000 was run in Tallahassee from Cascades Park
on USATF Certified Course FL15071EBM.
In 2016 the Firecracker 5000 was run in Tallahassee from Cascades Park
on USATF Certified Course FL14149EBM.
Due to COVID-19, there was no 2020 Firecracker 5000.

Cadden Maxwell and Megan Noonan take Potluck

Days before Saturday, 3 June 2023, and Gulf Winds Track Club's 25th annual Potluck Bash Four Mile, race director David Yon stated, "This will be the fastest PLB course ever."


After the race through Tallahassee's Phipps Park, Cadden Maxwell said, "I thought it was shorter than four miles."

That's one way of ensuring the "fastest course ever."


Maxwell knows his distances. A high school sophomore, Maxwell has put in two years on the cross-country team at Leon High, preceded by three more years at Raa Middle School. And he was also the fastest athlete on the trails at the Potluck Cross-Country Race, running 25:43 for whatever distance it was. Megan Noonan was the first woman in the Potluck, placing thirteenth overall in 31:13.

The Potluck course varies from year to year, but the starting line has always been at Meridian Park and the finish line at Forestmeadows Athletic Center, with the intervening miles of running in Phiips Park. The 2023 event followed this pattern, and the athletes set out from Meridian Park at 6:00 PM. A few minutes later, the field crossed the Meadows Soccer Complex, with Cadden Maxwell setting the pace and Zach DeVeau close behind. A few weeks earlier, Maxwell had finished his sophomore year track season. Since then, his only running had been an easy six miles a few days before Potluck. In spite of the layoff, Maxwell soon shrugged off the pursuit, although he couldn't say exactly where.


"When we left the east loop, that's where I couldn't see him behind me any more," said Maxwell.

After that, it was a solo run for the Leon High athlete, with only the lead bike to keep him company. Maxwell arrived at Forestmeadows and the finish line in 25:43, taking first. Tallahassee master runner Hong-Guo Yu was second with a 26:40. Jonah Blay, a rising senior on the Chiles High cross-country team, placed third in 26:50. Zach DeVeau, who had challenged Maxwell for the lead in the early going, ended the race fifth in 27:48.


Megan Noonan was the first woman to make it to the Meadows Soccer Complex, arriving there fifteen seconds before Madison Sims. Only the size of the lead changed after that. Noonan went on to grab the first woman's spot, running 31:13. Sims, another sophomore cross-country runner from Leon High, was the second woman and eighteenth overall in 33:14. Signe Ulsamer was the top woman master and third female finisher, nineteenth overall in 34:37.

Athletes run the Potluck without timepieces because the race includes a prediction competition--i.e., runners see how close to a predicted time they can complete the course. The best prognosticator was Tallahassee master runner Allen Blay, who predicted a time of 31:59 and ran 31:54. In contrast, Cadden Maxwell, the first runner across the finish line, was more than two minutes off his prediction. Maybe if he hadn't taken those three weeks off....


"Summer training starts Monday," said Maxwell.

"That woman" Katie Sherron scores a 1:27:12 win in the Tails & Trails Half Marathons

Lafayette Heritage Park was near the ten-mile mark of the 2023 Tails and Trails Half Marathon. On Saturday morning, 6 May 2023, I arrived at the park a bit more than an hour after the start of the race. A cyclist was already there.


"That woman was way ahead," he said. "No one else has come by."


I nodded agreement. We waited another minute.


"Have you seen anyone else go by?" he asked.

I hadn't. It was a long wait for the next athlete, because "that woman," Katie Sherron, ended up winning the trail race by almost six minutes, running 1:27:12. Kyle Kraeft was the first male finisher, placing second overall in 1:33:04.


Founded years ago as the annual five-kilometer Furry Scurry, Tails and Trails has grown to include a 10K, a half marathon, and a one-mile fun run. In 2023 the half marathon was first on the program, starting a few minutes after 7:30 AM. A few meters into the race, Katie Sherron was already leading, racing downhill toward the woods and the Cadillac Trail. Edward Nabong and Kyle Kraeft followed closely, but it wasn't long before Sherron had dropped her escort.


"About two miles or so," she recalled.

After that, racing through Lafayette Heritage Park to the Alford Greenway and back, Sherron's only company was the scenery and the wildlife, including a Lake Lafayette alligator.


"I saw one out there!" she said. "It was cool. On the land bridge on the way back."


Back on higher ground some miles later, Sherron crossed the finish line first overall in 1:27:12, as well as the first master runner and the first woman.


Tallahassee trail runner Kyle Kraeft led the men's field, placing second overall in 1:33:04. Edward Nabong was the men's runner-up, coming in third overall in 1:35.06. Brennan Ausloos was the third man in, fourth overall in 1:35:21. Jack McDermott was the first male master and the fifth male finisher, sixth overall in 1:38:01. Less than three weeks earlier, "Marathon Jack" had run 3:24:06 in the Boston Marathon.

Morgan Wilson took second in the women's standings, placing sixteenth overall in 1:47:00. A cross-country runner at Florida Gateway College, Wilson had raced in another half marathon in Tallahassee the previous November--the NJCAA National Championship Half Marathon, where she was 38th in 1:44:44. Behind Wilson, Emma Huggins was the third woman in the race, placing seventeenth overall in 1:48:10.


68 athletes finished the 2023 "Tails and Trails" half-marathon.

The Tails and Trails 10K got underway about an hour after the the half marathon, starting just after 8:30 AM. Tallahassee master runner Mickey Moore took first in the 6.2-mile event, running 39:42. Lincoln High senior Jordan Dougherty, just days after his final prep track season, finished runner-up in 43:13. Mike Horton, another Tallahassee master runner, took third in 45:25.

Susan Walden won the women's title in the 10K, placing tenth overall in 50:51. Stephanie Jones was the second woman across the finish line, twelfth overall in 51:34. Tamara Martin was the first woman master and third female finisher, thirteenth overall in 52:03.


90 athletes finished the 2023 "Tails and Trails" 10K.

The 5K, the oldest Tails and Trails race, started with the 10K. Leon High sophomore Cadden Maxwell won the shorter race by over 600 meters, covering the course in 17:43. Fifteen-year-old Landon Maxfield took second in 20:11, and Barry Drenkhahn was third in 20:19. Crawfordville's Duane Evans was the first master runner in the 5K, placing fourth overall in 20:34.

Claire Fullerton was the first woman in the 5K, running 24:30 for fourteenth overall. Just in sight at 24:50, Emelia Richardson was the women's runner-up and fifteenth overall.Tsige Tadesse-Kiros was the first woman master in the 5K, finishing third in the women's standings and nineteenth overall in 25:30.


243 athletes finished the 2023 "Tails and Trails" 5K. Another 37 completed the one-mile fun run. Miles and Minutes, LLC, of Tallahassee chip-timed the races.
