Leonardo Canete and Katie Sherron take tough half-marathons at "Tails and Trails"

Running a half-marathon is tough. Running those 13.1 miles on trails is tougher. When those trails are in Tallahassee, Florida going up and down the bluffs surrounding Lake Lafayette, the run is tougher still. Nevertheless, that describes the task that nearly a hundred athletes faced on Saturday morning, 7 May 2022, when they set out to run the half-marathon at the twentieth annual "Tails and Trails." Master runner Leonardo Canete was the fastest of the group, winning the race in 1:25:32. Dr. Katie Sherron, another master runner, was the first woman, placing sixth overall in 1:33:36.

The race started just after 7:30 AM on Easterwood Drive, in front of the Animal Services Center. The first kilometer was mostly downhill and on pavement. After that, the course turned onto the trails. Leonardo Canete already leading at that turn, 150 meters ahead of the next runner, August Roberts.

Twenty kilometers later, that lead had doubled to 300 meters when Canete crossed the finish line in a winning 1:25:32. Roberts took second in 1:26:51. During the final four kilometers, Chris O'Kelley overtook Tom Parker and Tallahassee master runner Mickey Moore to take third in 1:31:06. Moore was fourth in 1:32:51 and Parker fifth in 1:32:58.

Less than 200 meters behind Parker, Katie Sherron took sixth, the first woman in the half-marathon. Sherron not only finished more than two-and-a-half kilometers ahead of the next woman in the race; she also set a new women's course record for the "Tails and Trails" half-marathon, running 1:33:36. The old record? A 1:36:48 posted by Sherron in the 2017 race. The 2022 win was Sherron's third in the "Tails and Trails" half-marathon; she was also first woman in the 2016 race.

Jenna Thompson took second in the women's standings, finishing just six seconds ahead of the third woman, Melanie Leitman. Thompson was thirteenth overall in 1:46:57 and Leitman fourteenth in 1:47:03.

92 athletes finished the 2022 "Tails and Trails" half-marathon.

Due to COVID-19, the 2021 "Tails and Trails" had an abbreviated program, and the only race was the 10K. When all the races returned in 2022, the 10K was among them.

Duane Griffiths
Duane Griffiths and Trent Parsons

Duane Griffiths took an early lead in the 6.2-mile race. A few miles in, Montford Middle School cross-country runner Trent Parsons caught up with Griffiths, giving him some mid-race company. By the second half of the race, Griffiths had shaken off Parsons, who in turn was overtaken by Mike Horton. Griffiths held off Horton to win the 10K, 46:24 to 46:32. Parsons was third in 47:56. Joel Piotrowski was the first master runner in the race and the sixth male finisher, seventh overall in 50:31.

Duane Griffiths won the men's division of 10K by just eight seconds, but in the women's standings Anna Gann prevailed by nearly six minutes. Gann ran 48:56, placing fifth overall and finishing the full ten kilometers before any other woman in the race had finished nine.

The first turn on the "Tails and Trails" 5K course comes about 400 meters into the race. If Brent Moody had looked back at that corner, he would have seen that he was leading by about twenty meters. Moody didn't look back, though, and he didn't have to look back for the rest of the race. He won the 5K by well over 200 meters, running 20:04. Behind him, Ethan Liu, an eighth-grader on the Fairview Middle School track team, moved up through the field during the race to take second in 21:09. Duane Evans was the first master runner in the race, placing third overall in 21:21.

A seventh-grader at Montford, Annabelle Wiktorski runs both cross-country and track on her school's teams. During the 2021 cross-country, she won the county championship in the middle school girls' 3K. Three days before "Tails and Trails," she won her second 1600 race of the 2022 track season while wearing Montford colors, running 5:58.01. The "Tails and Trails" 5K was longer than the 3K races Wiktorski had run during cross-country or the 1600-meter races she had run during track, but she handled the extra distance. She handled it well. Wiktorski ran 21:23, taking first in the women's standings and placing fourth overall.

Amelia Bryant was the second woman in the race, placing tenth overall in 23:09. Eleven-year-old Charlotte Sikes was third in the women's division, placing twentieth overall in 25:15. Half an hour before the 5K, Sikes had finished first in the one-mile fun run, throwing down a 6:22. Katie Price was the first woman master in the 5K and the sixth female finisher, placing 46th overall in 27:27.

275 athlete finished the 2022 "Tails and Trails" 5K. Another 37 completed the one-mile fun run. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee chip-timed the races.
