Chris O'Kelley and Nancy Stedman rush through Phipps Park to get Potluck cross-country wins

Gulf Winds Track Club's Potluck Four Mile is an annual cross-country race in Tallahassee, Florida with a different course each year. You can do that in Phipps Park. Because there is a prediction division at the event, there are no mile marks and runners aren't allowed to wear watches. So when I asked Chris O'Kelley when it was that he broke out into the lead, his answer didn't rely on course markers or clocks, but on his running experience and his knowledge of the Phipps Park trails.

"It was about a mile?" opined O'Kelley. "I broke away going up the hill near Gate B, then put in a surge on the downhill to widen the gap.


"I got impatient."


After that, he was in a hurry to get to the finish line. O'Kelley arrived there more than 600 meters ahead of everyone else in the race, winning in 26:15. Tallahassee master runner Nancy Stedman was the first woman in the four miler, coming in twelfth overall in 36:31.

Before he became short on patience, O'Kelley had been running in a group with Alex Marshall, Andrew Nix, and Duane Evans. Marshall and Nix were rising juniors on the Wakulla High cross-country team, but it was Evans, the master runner, who hung on to finish runner-up in 29:01. Another master runne, Paul Guyas, took third in 30:55. Nix ended the race fifth in 32:28 while Marshall was eighth in 35:51.


Early in the race, while Andrew Nix was setting the pace for the leaders around the Meadows Soccer Complex, Nancy Stedman was already well ahead of the rest of the women's field. There wasn't a late-race challenge after that, nor a dramatic break-away move. Stedman simply went on to win the women's title by more than 400 meters, covering the course in 36:31. Martha Guyas took second in the women's standings, placing thirteenth overall in 39:11. Master runner Beth Alexander was the third woman and eighteenth overall in 41:19.

The speed winner was known as soon as the first runner finished, but you had to wait till the last runner finished to determine who won the prediction competition. That turned out to be Joe Vega, who run just under 39:31--less than one second off his predicted finish time of 39:30. The second-best forecast was turned in by another master runner, Sarala Hermes, who also had the closest prediction among the women. Hermes ran 52:51 after predicting 53:02.


A brief rain shower soaked the course before the race, but mostly it just settled the dust and made the surface more resilient. True, it also made the air a bit steamy, but rain at Potluck is almost traditional--like the traditions of a new course every year, a post-race potluck dinner supplemented with a low country boil, and the announcement of the Chenoweth awards at the end of the evening.


48 athletes finished the 2022 Potluck Four-Mile. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the race. Potluck will return in 2023 for the 25th running of the race. Look for it in Phipps Park on either the first or second Saturday in June.

Riparian victories in Bainbridge for Gibson and Stedman

"I can't close on him!" said Paul Guyas.


It was Saturday morning, 27 February 2016, and Guyas had just one kilometer to go in the Bainbridge, Georgia Kiwanis Club's twelfth annual River Run 10K. In spite of his best efforts he was twenty seconds behind Myles Gibson, stuck in second place. It was the same story at the finish line, with Gibson crossing the finish line first in 37:27 and Guyas following in 37:48. Tallahassee, Florida master runner Nancy Stedman took the women's title in 48:31, placing sixth overall.

It was a race that almost didn't happen. The River Run had originally been scheduled for 9 January 2016, but that week the Flint River had crested at more than five feet above flood stage. All indications were that most of the course through Earle May Boat Basin Park would still be underwater on race day. The Bainbridge Kiwanis rescheduled the River Run for 27 February 2016 with the hope that the river would cooperate.


The Flint was back in its banks when the runners set out on the new date. Donalsonville, Georgia's Myles Gibson took the pace out hard.


"He was out like a shot," said Paul Guyas, a Tallahassee athlete.


At the mile mark Gibson was half a minute ahead of the next runner, Guyas. Guyas was determined not to give up any more ground to Gibson, and actually gained a bit over the next two miles. At the halfway point, Gibson noticed him.

"I saw him back there when we came out of the woods," said Gibson. "I knew I really had to start working then."


It was a tough second half. Guyas wouldn't give up the chase, Gibson wouldn't give up an inch. Guyas' 37:48 was his best 10K time ever, but it didn't get him any closer to Gibson's winning 37:27. John Hemanes was a distant third, running 44:46.


For Gibson, it was a faster time than the 38:14 he had run two weeks earlier to win the Run 2-1-1 10K in Tallahassee. He would like to go faster still.


"I ran 32 races last year," said Gibson. "I'm not going to do that many this year. I'd rather run one 10K under 37:00 than four slower ones."


Even so, Gibson had his eye on the Thomasville Road Baptist Church 10K in Tallahassee the following Saturday, 5 March 2016. When the racing bug bites you, you tend to stay bitten.

In the women's standings, Nancy Stedman's winning 48:31 gave her a lead of more than 700 meters over the runner-up for the ladies, Darla Castoro. Castoro ran 52:16, placing tenth overall. Carla Elliott was the third female finisher, coming in twelfth overall in 53:05.

Rik Pool won the River Run's 5K race, held concurrently with the 10K. Pool, a former member of the Bishop Moore High cross country team, ran the 3.1-mile course in 19:00. Bainbridge High frosh Caleb Harris took second in 19:21. Al Whatley of Cairo, Georgia was the top master runner in the shorter race, placing third overall in 20:48. Tallahassee master runner Paula O'Neill was the top woman in the 5K, finishing sixth overall in 23:51.

Molosky still owns the Draggin' Tail Challenge

If there was a "Dragon Master" at the 20th annual Draggin' Tail 18-Mile Challenge, it would have to be Vince Molosky. Running 1:55:23, the Tallahassee distance runner won the race for the sixth year in a row on Saturday morning, 22 November 2014. By now Molosky has quite a collection of the dragon-effigy awards that go to the winners of the event. Other athletes have won the race, but that was so long ago that it's getting hard to remember them. The most recent champion before Molosky began his one-man dragon dynasty was Tallahassee master runner Jack McDermott. McDermott took the Draggin' Tail Challenge titles in 2005, 2006, and 2008, but in 2014 he ran 2:04:22 and finished second to Molosky.


Tallahassee realtor Nancy Stedman was the first woman as well as the first woman master in the 18-mile race, placing 14th overall in 2:35.39. Master runner Karen Meadows was second in the women's standings, finishing 18th overall in 2:41:51. Birgit Maier-Katkin edged Theresa Sullivan for the third women's spot, 2:53:04 to 2:53:05; the two runners were 23rd and 24th overall.


43 athletes finished the 18-mile out-and-back course through Sunny Hills, Florida, confronting bad pavement, lonely roads, and "sand mountain." Twelve relay teams also covered the course, and another 21 athletes completed the Draggin' Tail 5K fun run.

Sizzler runners beat BP to St. George Island

I was hesitant about making the trip to the coast for this year's St. George Island Sizzler 5K. After all, it is close to a hundred miles from Tallahassee. But as race day approached, the drive didn't seem quite as long. By that morning I was thinking fondly of the highway through Tate's Hell. Some depressing news reports reminded me that this might be one of the last chances to see St. George Island before the white sandy beaches got a new color scheme courtesy of British Petroleum. So by 4:00pm on Saturday, 26 June 2010, I was on the road out of town to watch the 12th annual St. George Island Sizzler.


Scattered thunderstorms had moderated the temperatures inland, but on the island skies were clear and it was just plain hot. The sea breeze was too gentle to be of much comfort. The shade was pleasant--too bad there was none on the course. Having established that it was going to be a hot race, I decided to check and see if the 5K was starting at 7:30pm ET as posted on the entry form, or if it was starting at any old time after the one-mile fun run as it had last year. The ubiquitous Bill Lott was helping set up the finish line, so I checked with him.


"7:30!" he declared. "The time that's on the entry form! Hobson said that he was sure to make some mistakes this year, but he wouldn't make that one again."


If race director Hobson Fulmer was determined to start on schedule, then it would be my own fault if I missed the start. Reassured, I found a hiding place out of the sun, emerging only to watch the one-milers set out. Soon enough it was time for the main event. Quite close to exactly 7:30pm, the runners set out.


In spite of the heat, more than a few runners set out at too optimistic pace. It was a self-correcting error. Halfway through the race a group of four led the field, headed by Carl Nordhielm and Tim Unger. Over the last two kilometers Nordhielm shed his challengers, finally dropping Unger and going on to finish both as the overall winner and the first master runner in. Behind Nordhielm, Marathon Jack McDermott had trailed the leaders, running back in seventh place as late as the three-kilometer mark. But during the second half of the race, McDermott steadily picked up places, moving past runners spent by the heat or by the hot pace of Nordhielm. Finally, in a near-replay of the previous weeks Melon Run, McDermott overtook Unger 200 meters from the finish line and went on to finish in the runner-up spot.


The women's competition saw Nancy Stedman moving to the top spot and staying there to take the title. Like Nordhielm in the men's race, Stedman was also the first master across the line among the women. The race for runner-up was closer, but once again a McDermott prevailed, as Laura McDermott took second.


As the last of the finishers moved into the finish chute, race director Hobson Fulmer looked relieved. The event had gone off seamlessly and the heat hadn't killed anyone. "It was even hotter than last year," said Fulmer. "These were the slowest winning times ever, and there were some fast runners out there."


Well, maybe. I remember the heat being even more awful in 2009, but I'll concede the point rather than look up the relevant weather reports. Either way, it's the conditions you'd expect from the "Sizzler." And let's forget that "slowest winning times" business. Outrunning everyone who shows up on race day is good enough; it's not necessary to beat twelve years of "Sizzler" runners.
