Vince Molosky slays a seventh Draggin'

2016 Draggin' Tail Run logoClarence DeMar won the Boston Marathon seven times.

It did take him twenty years. He won his first Boston title in 1911 and his seventh in 1930. In another century, Vince Molosky won the Draggin' Tail 18-Mile Challenge seven times. It only took Molosky eight years, with the first win in 2009 and his seventh in 2016. That seventh win came at the 22nd annual Draggin' Tail on Saturday morning, 19 November 2016, when Molosky ran the 18 miles through the streets of Sunny Hills, Florida in 1:58:50.

Tracey Burch was the top master in the race and second overall in 2:09:01. The 2015 champion, Burch was the only other runner to win the race during the "Molosky Era" of 2009 to 2016. Master runner Steven Beaupre was third overall in 2:09.21. Jack McDermott, a three-time Draggin' Tale champion, was fourth in 2:11:26.

Stephanie Williamson won the women's title in 2:35.55, coming in thirteenth overall. The top woman master and second female finisher was Karen Wilson, twentieth overall in 2:48:02. Tallahassee master runner Birgit Maier Katkin edged Laura McDermott for the third spot in the women's standings, 2:49:58 to 2:49:59. Maier-Katkin and McDermott were 21st and 22nd overall.

40 athletes and seven relay teams completed the 18-mile course at the 2016 Draggin' Tail Challenge. Another sixteen people finished an associated 5K. The 22nd annual Draggin' Tail Challenge was dedicated to the memory of the late Elsa Law, who had been at each of the events through 2015.

Burch and Keene weren't Draggin' in Sunny Hills

21st annual Draggin' Tail 18-Mile Challenge, 21 November 2015The roads in Sunny Hills, Florida, are quiet, a lot quieter than the real estate developers who founded the community would ever have liked. But on one day each year, runners disturb that quiet, as they did on Saturday morning, 21 November 2015, at the 21st Draggin' Tail 18-Mile Challenge.

Tracey Burch was the fastest of the 18-Mile Challengers as the race started its third decade. Winning by more than a mile-and-a-quarter, Burch covered the out-and-back course in 2:09:11. Mark Tombrink took second in 2:18:40. Crawfordville, Florida, athlete Duane Evans was the fastest master runner in the race, placing third overall in 2:19:09.

Eden Keene took the women's title, finishing ninth overall in 2:36:01. Laura McDermott was second in the women's standings, placing twelfth overall in 2:45:03. Theresa Sullivan was the top woman master and third female finisher, coming in thirteenth overall in 2:47:08.

For the athletes not willing to tackle the entire challenge, there was a 3 x 6-mile relay. For the second year in a row the relay event attracted twelve teams, each just as interested in racing as they were in seeing which team member could be suckered into running the middle leg (the one that includes "Sand Mountain"). The fastest squad was the Tallafasties (Paul Guyas, Jack McDermott, and Paula O'Neill), who finished right behind Tracy Burch in 2:10:31. Tallahassee's Tallafasties were the top mixed squad; the first men's squad was AOC1 (John Johnson, Daniel Kim, and Matt Schnell) who were third in the team standings with a 2:32:03. The top women's team was the Sole Sisters (Daniel Mulick and Norma McPherson), at 2:38:21 the fourth overall team.

In addition to the 33 runners and twelve relay teams who finished the 18-Mile Challenge, another 19 athletes completed the Draggin' Tail 5K. After that, the streets of Sunny Hills were quiet again, the pavement crumbling peacefully for another year.

Molosky still owns the Draggin' Tail Challenge

If there was a "Dragon Master" at the 20th annual Draggin' Tail 18-Mile Challenge, it would have to be Vince Molosky. Running 1:55:23, the Tallahassee distance runner won the race for the sixth year in a row on Saturday morning, 22 November 2014. By now Molosky has quite a collection of the dragon-effigy awards that go to the winners of the event. Other athletes have won the race, but that was so long ago that it's getting hard to remember them. The most recent champion before Molosky began his one-man dragon dynasty was Tallahassee master runner Jack McDermott. McDermott took the Draggin' Tail Challenge titles in 2005, 2006, and 2008, but in 2014 he ran 2:04:22 and finished second to Molosky.

Tallahassee realtor Nancy Stedman was the first woman as well as the first woman master in the 18-mile race, placing 14th overall in 2:35.39. Master runner Karen Meadows was second in the women's standings, finishing 18th overall in 2:41:51. Birgit Maier-Katkin edged Theresa Sullivan for the third women's spot, 2:53:04 to 2:53:05; the two runners were 23rd and 24th overall.

43 athletes finished the 18-mile out-and-back course through Sunny Hills, Florida, confronting bad pavement, lonely roads, and "sand mountain." Twelve relay teams also covered the course, and another 21 athletes completed the Draggin' Tail 5K fun run.

Molosky, Mann triumph over the Draggin' in Smaug-free Sunny Hills

Tallahassee's Vince Molosky extended his Draggin' Tail 18-mile challenge winning streak to four races at the 18th annual edition of that event on Saturday morning, 17 November 2012. Molosky covered the course through the streets of Sunny Hills, Florida in 1:47:47, finishing the 18 miles before any other runner in the race had gone even 16 miles. It was the fastest of the four Draggin' Tail wins that Molosky had collected from 2009 to 2012. Gabriel Garza was the next runner across the finish line, putting up a 2:01:46 for the rolling 18 miles. Sean Smith took third in 2:19:20. Tallahassee's Chuck Davis was the fastest master runner in the race, finishing fourth in 2:21:04. The next master runner in was Tallahassee's Mike Burns, fifth in 2:25:46.

Panama City Beach distance runner Amy Mann's 2:27:38 wasn't quite as fast as the 2:27:01 that she ran at the 2008 Draggin' Tail, but in 2012 it was good enough for sixth place overall and first female honors. Mann finished the race a comfortable 250 meters ahead of the women's runner up, Debbie Wittmer, who was eight overall in 2:28:58. Wittmer was the first master woman in the 2012 Draggin' Tail.

The number of participants at the Draggin' Tail was slightly down from the previous year, which was already lightly attended. With only 35 finishers in the 18-mile challenge, plus six 3 x 6-mile relay teams and 17 finishers in the 5K, the Draggin' Tail seems on the verge of becoming as extinct as the dragons that grace the race trophies and T-shirts. Athletes who love this event should start training for the 19th annual race (23 November 2013) and plan on bringing a friend or two.

Molosky and Patterson are Draggin' slayers in Sunny Hill

2011 Draggin' Tail ChallengeThe numbers were somewhat down at this year's 17th annual Draggin' Tail 18-Mile Challenge in Sunny Hill, Florida on Saturday morning, 19 November 2011. Maybe the members of the long-distance running fraternity had chosen instead to run the Pensacola Marathon, the St. Augustine Marathon, or one of the other events in the rapidly proliferating roster of 26.2-mile races. Or maybe they were just getting tired of losing to Vince Molosky. If the latter were the case they they chose wisely, because for the third year in a row, Molosky administered an ass-whupping to the Draggin' Tail field, this time finishing at the front of a field of 38 athletes in 1:48:35. It was Molosky's fastest Draggin' Tail yet, and the fastest time at Draggin' Tail since 2002 when Jessie Blanton turned the 18 miles in 1:46:42. About two and a half kilometers behind Molosky, Tallahassee's Roger Schmidt finished runner-up in 1:58:12. Aaron Scrimager of Panama City Beach was third in 1:59:51, and Tallahassee's Michael Kennett placed fourth in 2:10:09. The top master in the Draggin' Tail Challenge was Jim Meadows of Panama City Beach, who came in fifth overall in 2:14:34. Michelle Patterson was the first female in the field, finishing ninth overall in 2:25:55. Diane Morris (11th, 2:29:53) was the second woman finisher and the first female master.

Molosky, Nyquist up to the challenge at Draggin' Tail

Tallahassee's Vince Molosky trotted back to St. Theresa Catholic Church almost three minutes before any other runner, winning the 16th annual Draggin' Tail 18-Mile Challenge on 18 November 2010 in Sunny Hills, Florida. Successfully defending his 2009 Draggin' Tail title, Molosky's time was 1:52:43. The next runner in after Molosky was David Shearon of Panama City Beach, who finished as top master in 1:55:37. Another Panama City Beach runner, Hadley Nyquist, was the first woman finisher, placing third overall in 2:06:10. The women's runner-up, Kristin Petersen, finished nearly two miles behind Nyquist, 11th overall in 2:20:31. Another mile back, Tallahassee's Nancy Stedman (17th, 2:28:28) was the third woman finisher and top woman master. 53 runners and 13 relay teams finished the race.

The Draggin' Tail 18-Mile Challenge is run in Sunny Hills, Florida, a sub-division in the sand hills of the Florida panhandle between Panama City and Chipley. Developers audaciously bought the land, put in roads and a country club, and then waited for residents to flock to their community. For the most part they are still waiting; vacant lots far outnumber homes in Sunny Hills. But the miles of deserted streets make it a great place to hold a road race, and Draggin' Tail has taken advantage of that for 16 years now, with only one course change in its history. For runners not up to the full Challenge there is a 3 x 6-mile relay and a 5K fun run. The awards and T-shirt always feature a dragon, and you can count on the race being held each year on the Saturday before Thanksgiving.
