Paul Guyas and Isabel Davis defeat sand, snags, and the competition at the Prefontaine 5K

West of Tallahassee, Florida and just inside the Apalachicola National Forest, there's a spot on the map labeled "Andrew." Perhaps it was a village before the Great Depression. There's not much there now aside from the intersection of Aenon Church Road and Silver Lake Road. There's an Andrew Lake, but that pond is overshadowed by neighboring Silver Lake, where the United States Forestry Service maintains the Silver Lake Recreation Area. Nevertheless, once each year since 1976, on the cusp of autumn the Gulf Winds Track Club visits Andrew for the Salute To Prefontaine Forest 5K. Tallahassee master runner Paul Guyas won the 44th annual Prefontaine 5K on Saturday morning, 30 September 2019, with a 20:36. Isabel Davis, a seventh-grader at Cornerstone Learning Community, won the women's division, placing twelfth overall in 27:15.

The race started at 8:30 AM from the Silver Lake Recreation Area. The runners followed a two-lap course, each lap taking the field around both Silver Lake and Andrew Lake. Midway through the first lap the runners passed through what would have been downtown Andrew, if there ever was such a thing. Williams Springer was setting the pace at this point. An eighth-grader on the cross-country team at Trinity Catholic, Springer led the field up a hill and over a fallen tree in Central Andrew. Paul Guyas was just a step behind, though, and by the second trip through the heart of Andrew, Guyas was 50 meters ahead of Springer and pulling away. When Guyas crossed the finish line in a winning 20:36, his lead had grown to just under 200 meters. Springer was second in 21:22, and Hans Hassell placed third in 22:36.

In the women's competition, Isabel Davis, a member of the Cornerstone Learning girls' cross-country team, was also trailing on the first trip through Andrew. But Davis was the first female athlete through Andrew on the second lap, and her final time of 27:15 put her more than 100 meters ahead of the next woman in the race. Martha Guyas was the women's runner-up and fifteenth overall in 28:00. Marlee Tucker, a sophomore on the Franklin County High girls' cross-country team, placed third in the women's standings and nineteenth overall in 29:12.

57 athletes finished the 2019 Salute To Prefontaine 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the race.

Guyas and Sack run one-two at Run 2-1-1

2-1-1 Big Bend probably has no intention of making their annual Run 2-1-1 a little more challenging each year. It does seem to happen that way, though. The race started in 2014 as a 5K run around Tallahassee, Florida's Southwood community. In 2015 the course was changed to include a climb from the coastal plain to the Red Hills up the Cody Escarpment. If that additional degree of difficulty wasn’t enough, there was now a 10K option in addition to the 5K race. Then, after three years of cool-weather races in January or February, the fourth annual Run 2-1-1 was scheduled for 3 June 2017. Now the athletes would get to test themselves against the temperature as well as the hills.

Paul Guyas and Kat Sack were in Southwood that Saturday morning, determined to make things even more challenging for anyone else who wanted to win the race. They did. Guyas won the 10K in 41:16, and Sack took the women’s title, placing second overall in 43:27.

Guyas led nearly from the start of the race, but in the early going he had Gary Johnston for company. Around two miles into the race Guyas shook off Johnston.

“It was on a downhill on Biltmore Avenue,” Guyas described the location of his move.

After that it was a solo run up and down the slopes for Guyas as he went on to win in 41:16. Gary Johnston was the first master runner and second male finisher, coming in third overall in 45:46. Laryn Flikkema, another master runner, was third in the men's standings and fourth overall with a 47:52.

No one in the women’s field stayed with Kat Sack during the 10K; her challenges came from the race itself.

“After the first four miles my legs just went,” said Sack. “The heat and humidity got to me.”

Sack showed no sign of distress, though, as she motored up the last hill on Merchants Row Boulevard, heading toward the finish line in the Southwood Town Center. Monica Judd was the first woman master and second female finisher, seventh overall in 50:17. Nazarae Rodriguez was the third woman across the finish line and eighth overall in 52:32.

For Sack, it was the fourth win on four consecutive Saturdays, coming after victories at the Run For Ansley in Tallahassee, the Catfish Crawl in Blountstown, and the Gate-to-Gate Run in Eglin AFB. After the 2-1-1, the longest of the four runs, Sack plans a break from competition.

“It ends at four,” said Sack. “I’m not running next weekend.”

Guyas, on the other hand, was planning to compete again even while running the 10K.

“I was thinking about the next race today, the Potluck Four-Mile,” said Guyas. “I had to pace myself for that.”

Guyas and Meleski head the Half-Shell Hustle

Running OystersFor as long as there have been Floridians, Floridians have loved oysters. Pre-Columbian people left behind huge oyster-shell middens as evidence of their loves, heaps of shells left behind after the oysters inside had been eaten. One such midden near Jacksonville covers 25 acres and is 25 feet deep in shells, the refuse from nearly 2,000 years of oyster consumption. Elsewhere in the state the mounds of shells show up as islands or oak hammocks.

Rather than start their own modern-day midden as a monument to the oyster, the people of Apalachicola, Florida celebrate the shellfish with an annual festival, the Apalachicola Oyster Cook-Off. And since 2014, part of that festival has been the Half-Shell Hustle Road Race.

The fourth annual Half-Shell Hustle was held on the streets of Apalachicola on Saturday morning, 14 January 2017. Tallahassee, Florida athlete Paul Guyas won the five-kilometer race, running 18:16. Lane Williams, the 2015 Half-Shell Hustle champion, was runner-up in 18:46. Joel Piotrowski of Tallahassee was the fastest master runner in the race, placing third overall in 19:07.

Master runner Genee Meleski was the women's champion placing ninth overall in 22:23. The women's runner-up was Ashley Cook, eleventh overall in 22:25. Just behind Cook, master runner Sarah Ransom placed third in the women's standings and twelfth overall in 22:31.

Alyson Churchill motors to victory on the Cadillac Trail

During 2015 Alyson Churchill won the women's title at each of the four races of Gulf Winds Track Club's Summer Trail Series. A stress fracture kept her out of the first three races of the 2016 series, but two days before the finale on the Cadillac Trail, Churchill got medical clearance to run again. Run she did. On Saturday evening, 30 July 2016, fourteen-year-old Alyson Churchill won the Cadillac Trail Race, covering the rugged course through Tallahassee, Florida's Lafayette Heritage Park in 42:29. Paul Guyas was the first male finisher, coming in second overall in 43:06.

"The course is 5.6 miles," race director Jim Halley announced at the starting line. "Give or take."

Trails being what they are, he probably wasn't entitled to two significant figures.

Alyson Churchill
Alyson Churchill

Five-and-a-half miles or six, the race started just after 6:00 PM. After a short dash along the Goose Pond Trail, the runners left the pavement to turn onto the Cadillac Trail. Paul Guyas led the field through the woods with Eric Godin close behind. Godin had won the second of the first three Summer Trail Series events, the Oak Hammock Trail Race. Godin had trailed Guyas in the other two races, though, with Dan Baur taking the top spot. After about a mile on the Cadillac Trail, Godin made his move.

"I tried to push the pace early on because I'm comfortable on these trails," said Godin. "I run out here more than any of the other trail series courses."

Godin wasn't out front long, though. "Eric jumped past me after the first mile," said Guyas. "Then I passed him back."

"He passed me," said Godin. "And shortly after that Alyson did too."

Paul Guyas
Paul Guyas

Alyson Churchill had been stalking the two leaders nearly since the start of the race. Overtaking Godin, she set her sights on Guyas. She caught him close to halfway through the race.

"It was about 2.8 miles," said Churchill. "I looked on my watch. He actually asked if it was me."

"I didn't know who it was," said Guyas. "But it had to be Alyson."

The second half of the race and the win belonged to Churchill as she finished the course in 42:29. Guyas took second in 43:06, while Greg Bargo overtook Eric Godin to finish third in 44:45. Godin was fourth in 45:25. Katie Gorman, the top woman in the first three Summer Trail Series races, was runner-up in the women's standings at Cadillac Trail. Gorman placed fifth overall in 46:30.

Eric Godin, Greg Bargo

It wasn't just Churchill's first race in the Summer Trail Series, it was her first race of any kind since April. Churchill hadn't been able to compete since the Leon County Middle School Track and Field Championships on 20 April 2016.

"I had a stress fracture," explained Churchill. "I didn't get to go to the State Meet which was disappointing."

Churchill put that disappointment behind her on the Cadillac Trail. What's next?

"Cross country season," said Churchill. "I'm excited to be running high school cross country."

Which high school would that be?

"Lincoln!" said Churchill

More distance at Encounter 316 means more wins for Guyas and Johnson

Tallahassee athlete Paul Guyas won the Encounter 316 five-mile run on Saturday morning, 18 June 2016. Guyas covered the five miles through the streets of Thomasville, Georgia in 31:25. Beverly Johnson was the first woman in the race, finishing fourth overall in 40:05.

I don't have a large enough sample size to state a statistically significant conclusion, but my gut feeling is that there is a trend of races adding longer distance events to their program. For example, fixtures that have gotten by with a 5K and a one-mile fun run for years are including a 10K on the menu. Other races are suddenly offering a half marathon option. This is just a casual observation that I don't intend to explore any farther, so if you want to crunch some numbers and get a scholarly paper out of it then feel free.

Encounter 316 fueled my suspicions by starting out in 2015 as a 5K race, then adding the five mile event in 2016. Guyas took advantage of the longer run, as did Thomasville's Chad Johnson. Johnson was the fastest master runner in the five mile, finishing second overall in 34:47. Lance Parker took third in 36:55.

Polyanna Bass was the first woman master in the race, placing second in the women's standings behind Beverly Johnson. Bass was sixth overall in 45:31. Lori Richardson was the third female finisher, coming in tenth overall in 47:16.

Paul Guyas beats the Batman at FSU's Autism Superhero 5K

Until a few days before the ninth annual FSU Autism Superhero 5K, the Northwood Centre was infested with enough brown bats to populate any bat cave. So it was appropriate that when that race started in front of the Northwood Centre, it was a runner dressed as Batman that jumped out into the lead. However, the Caped Crusader wasn't first over the finish line. Instead it was Paul Guyas who won the race in 18:14, finishing more than a hundred meters ahead of the Dark Knight. Leigh Ann Bradley was the first woman in the 5K, placing 22nd overall in 24:41. 198 athletes finished the 3.1-mile race.

Paul Guyas, Tyler Sununu

The hosts of the race, the Florida State University Center For Autism, is somewhat responsible for the appearance of Batman. After seven years of branding the race as the FSU Autism 5K, the Center added "Superhero" to the title in 2015. "We are encouraging participants to come dressed in their best Superhero costume!" read the pre-race information. So Tyler Sununu showed up at that eighth annual race dressed as Batman, placing second after leading for the first three kilometers. Sununu was back as The Bat in 2016, despite the consequences of running in the heavily-insulated costume.

"I'm already burning up in here," Sununu confessed before the start of the race. He spoke in a rasping Batman voice of course.

Aaron Taylor

The runners got going just after 9:00 AM, starting with a circuit of the Northwood Center parking lot. Out onto Tharpe Street and west into the Parkside-Park Terrace neighborhood, Sununu led the field around the course. Late in the third kilometer Paul Guyas caught up with Sununu. Getting past him took a little longer.

"He kept surging," said Guyas. "I was like he was doing intervals in his batsuit."

"I was doing the voice the whole time," said Sununu. So in addition to changes in pace, Guyas also had to cope with occasional exclamations of "Justice!" and "I'm Batman!" That ended, though, with a kilometer to go.

"I passed him on the turn onto Tharpe Street," said Guyas. "I got onto the inside of the turn and went."

Case Gregory
#4835 Case Gregory and #3281 Michael Savage

The Batman may have caught many criminals since his first appearance in Detective Comics in 1939, but this Batman wasn't going to catch Guyas. Guyas won going away in 18:14, while Sununu was second in 18:39. Aaron Taylor was third in 20:00, Jeremy Fowler third in 20:07 and Ronnie Bonds fourth in 20:57. Twelve-year-old Case Gregory held off the top master runner in the race, Michael Savage, for fifth, both runners clocked in 21:20. Earlier in the morning, Gregory had run 6:50 in the FSU Autism Superhero Mile, finishing first in a field of 128 athletes.

Behind women's winner Leigh Ann Bradley, Debbie Peters was the top woman master and second female finisher, 23rd overall in 26:19. Anna Busby and Sarah Busby were the third and fourth women across the finish line, coming in 24th and 25th overall with identical times of 26:34.

Guyas rolls and Heddaeus sets record at Run For Lawson

Paul Guyas and Jillian HeddaeusThe plans are published. Welaunee Plantation is going to be developed. Welaunee Boulevard is going to be extended all the way to Interstate 10 and beyond and the land will fill up with houses, apartments, businesses, streets, and trails. That's in the future, though. In the meantime you can still make an annual tour of the "toe" of Welaunee Plantation in the Run For Lawson.

At the fourth annual Run For Lawson on Saturday morning, 1 November 2014, Paul Guyas didn't pause to appreciate the scenery. Winning by almost 600 meters, Guyas ran the 10K cross-country race in 38:58. Behind him, Mike Peymann edged Joel Piotrowski for second place and the top master spot, 41:23 to 41:29.

Jillian Heddaeus wasn't stopping to smell the goldenrod, either. Placing ninth overall, Heddaeus not only won the women's title by more than a kilometer, but also set a new women's course record of 45:32, breaking Renee Cox's 2013 record of 45:53. Jill Sweeny was second in the women's standings, coming in 21st overall in 51:46. Beth Culley was the third woman finisher and first woman master, 22nd overall in 52:10.

Evan Wilson and Molly McCannThe Run For Lawson 10K course takes runners twice around a loop through the Welaunee Plantation "toe," possibly the toughest 6.2-mile run in the Tallahassee area. For athletes who prefer a smaller dose of cross-country running, there's the Run For Lawson 5K. Rickards High senior Evan Wilson was the fastest runner in the junior race, posting 19:16 for a single trip around the loop. Aaron Taylor was second in 19:51, and Nick Trombetta third in 20:44. The fastest master runner in the 5K was Dewey Hudson, ninth overall in 23:00.

Placing fourth overall, Maclay sophomore Molly McCann won the women's division for a fourth straight year, and for the fourth straight year she set a new women's course record. This time around the new standard was 20:47, well under the 21:23 McCann ran in 2013. Brittney Barnes was second in the women's standings, finishing sixth overall in 22:18. Montford Middle School cross-country runner Emily Culley was third in the women's competition, coming in 13th overall in 23:28. Sky Feller was the first female master runner, 41st overall in 28:26.

The Run For Lawson is hosted each year by the Lawson Mayfield Memorial Foundation in memory of Lawson Mayfield, who lost her life to bacterial meningitis when she was 18. Proceeds from the event benefit the National Meningitis Association. Finish line and timing services for both races were provided by RaceSmith.com.

Get to the church on time? No problem for Larson and Sherron

Eric LarsonAt 8:30 AM in Tallahassee on Saturday morning, 1 March 2014, there was a slight chill in the air. It was starting time for the ninth annual Thomasville Road Baptist Church road race. By just after 9:00 AM it was shaping up into a sunny, warm day--the kind of weather that makes your friends up north, locked in late winter blizzards, jealous enough to stop talking to you. That was about the time that Eric Larson, winner of the Thomasville Road Baptist Church 10K, crossed the finish line, posting a time of 34:13 for the 6.2-mile race. Tony Guillen was the top master runner in the race, coming in fourth overall in 37:48. Katie Sherron was the first woman in the race, placing tenth overall in 41:23. Thomasville's Mary Anne Grayson, the 2012 TRBC 10K women's champion, was the first woman master for sixth year in a row; this time around she was 19th overall in 44:29.

Eric LarsonThe race started and finished at the church, as did a concurrently run 5K. Eric Larson was out like a bolt, though, outdistancing 10K runners and 5K runners alike. Only Vince Molosky tried to stay with Larson. Molosky had won the TRBC 10K in 2007 and 2010. At the mile mark he was only two second behind Larson. But when Molosky won his first TRBC 10K, Eric Larson had been a state champion distance runner at Pensacola Washington High School. The year that Molosky had earned a second TRBC title, Larson was in the middle of a four-year career of competing in cross-country and track for Florida Southern College. Larson put that experience on display, running away from Molosky and building up a lead of nearly 300 meters on his way back to the church and a 34:13 victory. Molosky was runner-up in 35:12. Zach Deveau finished third in 36:55. Tony Guillen beat out fellow master runner Sean Hudson for fourth place, 37:48 to 38:05.

Katie SherronRenee Cox led the women's field through the first mile, with Jillian Heddasus a few steps behind. Thirty meters back, Katie Sherron stalked them both. Sherron overtook Heddaeus first, then Cox. After taking the lead, Sherron took command of the race, building up a lead of nearly 400 meters and leaving Cox and Heddaeus to squabble over second place. Sherron came in ninth overall, winning the women's title in 41:23. Cox was runner-up on the women's side, placing 15th in 43:01. Heddaeus was the third woman finisher, 16th overall in 43:12. The fourth woman finisher and first woman master was Mary Anne Grayson, 19th overall in 44:29.
