A rout at Red Bug for Baur and Gorman

Climbing hills, crossing streams, and negotiating more than four miles of winding trails, Dan Baur won the Red Bug Trail Race, the third event in Gulf Winds Track Club's Summer Trail Series, running 33:14. Katie Gorman was the first woman in the race, placing fourth overall in 35:04. 130 athletes completed the race, held on Saturday morning, 9 July 2016, north of Tallahassee, Florida in Phipps Park.

The race started on a field at Forestmeadows Athletic Center, with the runners staring south toward a narrow opening into the woods. Just after entering the woods everyone had to turn left onto an even narrower path, one with only room for one person at a time. All this was in the first 100 meters of the race. It made for an interesting start.

"I expected that, but it was a real dogfight," said Paul Guyas, who placed second in the race. "I don't know how fast we ran that first 50 meters, but it was faster than race pace."

Some twenty seconds after the race was under way, Guyas was the fourth runner to squeeze onto the single-track. During the next two kilometers he overtook Greg Bargo and Geb Kiros, moving into second. No one caught Dan Baur, though. His pursuers occasionally glimpsed him through the trees, but Baur was unchallenged on his way to a 33:14 win. Guyas ran 33:41 for the runner-up spot. Eric Godin--winner of the second Summer Trail Series race, the Oak Hammock Trail Race--was third in 34:17. Geb Kiros was the fastest master runner that morning, placing fifth overall in 35:29.

Baur had been first to the turn at the start of the race, and in the women's field Katie Gorman was the first to the turn. Gorman, a James Madison University alumna, Gorman led the rest of the way, picking up her third win of the 2016 Summer Trail Series. Running 35:04 to the 36:40 posted by women's runner-up Meg Ogle, it was also Gorman's widest margin of victory so far in the series. Cairo, Georgia physician Zita Magloire was third in the women's standings, placing twentieth overall in 40:42. Magloire had been a standout distance runner at Tallahassee Chiles High before going on to run for Mississippi State University. Monica Judd was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, coming in 23rd overall in 42:17.

So far Baur has only made it to two of the three events in the Summer Trail Series. A doctoral student in exercise physiology at Florida State University, Baur is busy writing a dissertation and can't always make it to the races. However, he plans to be away from his research long enough to run the fourth and final race in the Series, the Cadillac Trail Race in Tom Brown Park on 30 July 2016.

"We really like the Cadillac Trail," said Baur. "It's right near our house."

Katie Gorman is also looking toward the Series finale.

"I'll be there," said Gorman. "Unless I get terribly out of shape before then."

In just three weeks, that doesn't seem likely.

Winning debuts for Baur and Gorman in the Summer Trail Series

Dan Baur, Katie GormanBefore Saturday morning, 21 May 2016, neither Dan Baur nor Katie Gorman had run a race in Gulf Winds Track Club's Summer Trail Series. That lack of experience didn't show in Tallahassee, Florida's Tom Brown Park that morning, when Baur won the Magnolia Trail Race and Gorman took the women's title. The three-and-a-half mile race was the opening event in the fourth year of the annual trail series.

The course took the runners on a winding tour of single-track trails on the face of a wooded bluff overlooking Lake Lafayette. Dan Baur covered the distance, somewhere between three and four miles, in a winning 25:18. Paul Guyas was second in 25:42. Greg Bargo, an early leader of the race, was third in 25:54. Chad Johnson, the fastest master runner in the race, finished eleventh overall in 28:50.

Women's champ Katie Gorman ran 27:05, placing sixth overall. Meg Ogle was second in the women's standings, coming in tenth overall in 28:29. Jocelyn Chan was the third woman and 25th overall in 31:43. Brook Pace, the winner of two Trail Series race in 2013, was the fourth woman and 31st overall in 32:28. Kelly Garland, the top woman master and fifth female finisher, placed 36th overall in 33:36.

After appearing on the four-race Trail Series schedule in 2013 and 2014, the Magnolia Trail Race was absent from the circuit in 2015 before returning in 2016. The remaining events of the 2016 Summer Trail Series are the Oak Hammock Trail Race on 4 June 2016, the Red Bug Trail Race on 9 July 2016, and the Cadillac Trail Race on 30 July 2016.

Strong finishes and Tallahassee Marathon titles for Chepses and Crouch

In 2013 at Gulf Winds Track Club's 39th annual Tallahassee Marathon, Connecticut runner Chris Zablocki outran Mark Chepses by a slim margin, 2:23:23 to 2:23:36, to win the 26.2-mile race. On Sunday morning, 8 February 2015, Chepses returned the favor at the 41st Tallahassee Marathon, winning the race in 2:19:12 and leaving Zablocki to finish runner-up in 2:20:31. Sarah Crouch of the Zap Fitness racing team ran away from Jordan Nelsen in the late stages of the Marathon to win the women's title, 2:46:59 to 2:47:49.

This little marathon,”55 guest speaker Hal Higdon described the Tallahassee Marathon. By the numbers it certainly couldn't be mistaken for a large race, especially if you compare it to the five-figure fields of the New York City and Boston Marathons. But of the runners who gathered at the starting line on the Florida State University campus for the 2015 Tallahassee Marathon, 335 of them would finish the full 26.2 miles--more than in 39 of the 41 years of the race's history.

A group of four runners was well out in front of the rest of those 335 by the end of the first mile. Chris Zablocki was setting the pace for the lead group, which also included Martin Mariithi, Mark Chepses, and Peter Kemboi. It was Zablocki's third marathon in little over a month; he had already won the Jacksonville Bank Marathon in 2:27:41 on 28 December 2014 and the Carlsbad Marathon with a 2:24:53 on 18 January 2015. Through the FSU campus, down Lake Bradford Road, and onto the St. Marks Trail, the foursome remained the same. At the nine-mile mark nothing had changed from the mile mark. It was still Zablocki half a step in front, shadowed by Mariithi, Chepses, and Kemboi.

In the Woodville area, though, during the miles surrounding the turn around, things changed. Kemboi dropped off the pace first. Then Mariithi could no longer stay with the leaders. Back in the Tallahassee city limits, the final miles would be a duel between Zablocki and Chepses.

Chepses broke away late, leaving Zablocki well behind. It wasn't a replay of 2013, where the top three runners were all on the Florida State's Mike Long track at the same time for their final lap. Chepses was on the track, through with his last lap, and wearing his finisher's medal before Zablocki had stepped onto the track. Chepses's winning time was 2:19:12, while Zablocki took second in 2:20:31. Mariithi was a distant third in 2:29:02. Cole Atkins of Zap Fitness had run down Kemboi, but couldn't quite catch Mariithi, and finished fourth in 2:29:35. Kemboi was fifth in 2:34:36. Running nearly nine minutes off his best time, William Sanders took sixth in 2:36:10. Tampa, Florida, athlete Larry Smart was the fastest master in the marathon, placing seventh overall in 2:43:43.

Jordan NelsenUnlike Zablocki in the men's race, Sarah Crouch wasn't an early leader in the women's competition. Two-time Tallahassee Marathon women's champ Nina Kraft was the first woman through the one-mile mark, closely followed by Jordan Nelsen of St. Augustine, Florida. Crouch was most of a minute behind in fifth. Seven miles later, Nelsen was leading the women's field, half a minute ahead of Kraft. Another two minutes behind Kraft, Crouch had moved up into third.

That was before the middle miles, though. In the Woodville area Crouch ran down Kraft then reeled in Nelsen, pulling even with the leader before the 19-mile mark. As the runners closed in on the finish line Crouch pulled ahead, going on to win the women's race in 2:46:59, placing eighth overall. Posting a PR of 2:47:49, Nelsen was the women's runner-up, coming in tenth overall. Shawanna White caught Nina Kraft to take third in the women's standings, 13th overall in 2:54:28. Kraft was the top woman master and fourth woman finisher, 16th overall in 2:55:14.
