DeVeau and Churchill win the 2015 Trail Series opener

Zach DeVeau, Alyson ChurchillSeven days after a road trip to Eglin Air Force Base to win the 30th annual Gate-to-Gate 4.4-Mile, Zach DeVeau was back racing at home in Tallahassee, Florida. There, in Tom Brown Park, DeVeau turned a winning 39:15 for five-and-a-half rugged miles on the Cadillac Trail on Saturday morning, 30 May 2015. Gulf Winds Track Club's Summer Trail Series had returned to Tallahassee, Florida, for a third straight year. DeVeau had just won the first event of the four-race circuit.

It was DeVeau's first Summer Trail Series race, but that wasn't the case for Greg Bargo. Bargo had finished runner-up in the 2014 Cadillac Trail Run, and placed second again in 2015, this time improving his time to 40:46. The race was Doug Bell's sixth Summer Trail Series competition, making him a true veteran of the circuit, but he hadn't run the Cadillac Trail 5.5-Miler since 2013. He improved more than two minutes on that effort from two years ago to place third in 41:14, taking the first master runner spot.

Swift Creek Middle School's cross-country season was still three months away. But that didn't keep Alyson Churchill, a rising eighth-grader at Swift Creek, from doing a little cross-country running at the Cadillac Trail Race. Five-and-a-half miles is quite a bit farther than the two miles that Leon County's middle school athletes race in cross country, but the extra distance didn't seem to bother Churchill. Running 42:51 she was the first female finisher in the race, placing seventh overall. It was the first Summer Trail Series event for Churchill, and it was also the first time on the circuit for Carrie Seiberlich. Seiberlich was the top woman master in the race, placing second in the women's standings and 13th overall in 45:42. Shelley Yaun placed third on the women's side, 29th overall in 48:48. Coming in 32nd overall in 49:04, Swift Creek Middle School cross-country runner Megan Churchill was the fourth female finisher.

A record 158 athletes finished the Cadillac Trail race. That number isn't liable to ever get much larger--entries in Gulf Winds Track Club's Summer Trail Series races are capped in order to preserve the trail-running experience. Three events were scheduled to follow the Cadillac Trail Run in the 2015 cirucit--the Oak Hammock Trail five mile in Phipps Park on 13 June 2015, the Coon Bottom Trail four-and-a-half Mile in Phipps Park on 18 July 2015, and the Redbug Trail four-and-a-half mile at Forestmeadows Park on 1 August 2015. All races in the series are directed by Bobby York.
