Godin and Sherron prevail on the trail at Tails & Trails

Call it two out of three for Eric Godin. Godin has won the half marathon in two of the last three years at the Animal Shelter Foundation's annual Tails and Trails, his most recent win coming on Saturday morning, 6 May 2017. In that 13.1 mile effort, Godin posted a winning time of 1:27:34. That same morning, Katie Sherron ran her own record to two out of two, winning the women's title in the half marathon for the second year in a row by placing tenth overall in 1:36.48.

The Tallahassee, Florida Tails and Trails has been around since 2002, but the program only included 5K and 10K races plus a one-mile fun run till 2015, the year the half marathon was added. 13.1-miles long, the half marathon course went cross country through three separate parks--Tom Brown Park, Lafayette Heritage Park, and the Alford Greenway. There were views of Upper Lake Lafayette from the tops of steep bluffs, a jaunt across the Piney Z Lake dam, and a trip over the Canopy Walkway Bridge. After that the runners got to turn around and see it all again on their way back to the animal shelter where the race had started. Unlike previous years, the half marathon started before the 10K and 5K.


"The weather was perfect," said Godin. "Starting half an hour earlier was nice."

"There was a group of us going out," recalled Godin. "Zach DeVeau, Jon Manry, and I ran together for about two miles. Mike was about a hundred yards ahead of us going into Alford."


Only Godin succeeded in overtaking Peymann.


"I caught him right after we got out of the woods at Alford," said Godin.


Godin spent the rest of the race opening a 300-meter gap on Peymann. At the animal shelter, Godin was first across the finish line in 1:27:34, with Peymann second in 1:29:03. Zach DeVeau took third in 1:30:16, and Jon Manry was fourth in 1:31:19.

The women's competition was closer. For much of the race it was very close indeed for the first two women.


"I was with Katie Sherron till nine-and-a-half miles," said Katie Sack. "Then she looked back, saw me, and took off."


In the remaining six kilometers Sherron built up a lead of over 100 meters on Sack en route to a 1:36:48 win. Sack was the women's runner-up and fourteenth overall in 1:37:22. Jillian Heddaeus was third in the women's standings and fifteenth overall in 1:40:32. Nancy Stedman was the top woman master and eighth female finisher, 33rd overall in 1:52:59.

At 8:30 AM, 30 minutes after the half marathoners had started their run, the 10K and and the 5K got under way. The 10K quickly developed into a duel between Leon High senior Matthew Cashin and Lincoln High alumnus Chris O'Kelley. For over half the race O'Kelley and Cashin were never more than a few steps apart as they left the rest of the field far behind. Cashin had won the Tails and Trails 10K in 2014 and 2015, but this time O'Kelley left him behind during the closing kilometers of the race. O'Kelley was first in 38:54 with Cashin runner-up in 39:56. Bobby Duggleby placed third in 41:02. Joel Piotrowski was the fastest master runner in the 10K, finishing fifth overall in 44:54.


Tallahassee lawyer Sheryl Rosen won the Tails & Trails 10K women's title in 2009 and she added a second win in 2017, finishing first in the women's standings and fourth overall in 44:40. Alyssa Terry was the women's runner-up and seventh overall in 49:16. Monica Judd was the first woman master and third female finisher, placing ninth overall in 50:34.

Finishing nearly half a kilometer ahead of the next runner, Kurt Dietrich won the Tails & Trails 5K in 18:47. At 20:47 Tim Unger was the first master runner and the overall runner-up. Hayden Swier was third in the 3.1-mile race with a 21:01.


Christina Linton, the women's champ at the Hops and Half Shells 5K trail race just two weeks earlier, added another women's title to her collection with a 23:44 win in the Tails and Trails 5K, placing eighteenth overall in 23:44. Deerlake eighth-grader Brooke Waldal was second in the women's standings and 23rd overall in 24:27. Becky Leckinger was the top woman master and third female finisher, 30th overall in 25:01.

It was a crowded morning at the races, with nearly 700 athletes finishing either the half marathon, the 10K, the 5K, or the one-mile. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed each of the four events.

Record runs on the Torreya trails for Clinthorne and Daily at the Draggin' Tail Ultra

After the first nine years of the Draggin' Tail Ultra, Tallahassee, Florida athlete Vince Molosky had won the 50K race eight times and held the course record. That's how things stood on Saturday morning, 8 April 2017, when runners gathered in Florida's Torreya State Park for the tenth annual Draggin' Tail Ultra. But part of both the cruelty and glory of sports is that once a race starts, no one really cares about resumes. With no regard for the history of the race, Dr. Jonathan Clinthorne was first across the finish line in Torreya that morning, posting a new Draggin' Tail 50K record of 4:29:36. Apparently, it was a good morning for records, because Ashley Daily broke her own Draggin' Tail women's record, winning her third 50K title in 5:16:34 and coming in third overall.


Aside from Clinthorne, Molosky was the only other runner to finish in under five hours, placing second in 4:58:47. 2015 Draggin' Tail 50K champ Charn McAllister was the third male finisher and fourth overall in 5:43:35. Tracy Burch was the first master runner in the 50K, placing fifth in the men's standings and sixth overall in 6:33:28.


Paula Lunt was the first woman master in the 50K as well as the second female finisher, eighth overall in 6:51:25. Master runner Andrea Nelson placed third on the women's side and tenth overall in 7:14:57.


Twenty athletes finished the 2017 Draggin' Tail Ultra Trail Challenge 50K.

Did I mention that it was a good day for records? Eric Godin's performance supported that premise; the Tallahassee athlete set a new Draggin' Tail record in the 25K, winning that race in 2:08:22. Mountaineer Greg Bargo took second in the 25K with a 2:11:55. Ken Thrasher was the first master runner and third overall in 2:39:35.


Master runner Monica Judd was the women's champ in the 25K, coming in fifth overall in 2:48:52. Master runner Nancy Stedman was the women's runner-up and ninth overall in 3:05:59. Kristin Halley grabbed third in the women's standings, finishing tenth overall in 3:09:08. 2016 Draggin' Tail 25K women's champ Lydia Miles was the fourth woman and fourteenth overall in 3:14:19.


63 athletes finished the 25K.

O'Kelley and Chalmers capture the Run For Lawson

Autumn is cross-country season for the high schools and colleges in Florida and the rest of the United States. For high school athletes there are hundreds of cross-country running events scheduled during the season just in Florida. The menu is a little more limited for collegiate runners, but there are still plenty of options. For everyone else there are fewer choices. Some of the best are right here in Tallahassee, though, including the Run For Lawson. More than 300 runners chose the sixth annual Run For Lawson on Saturday, 22 October 2016, racing either 10K or 5K. Chris O'Kelley won the longer event, covering the 6.2 miles through Welaunee Plantation in 36:23. Juanita Chalmers was the first woman in the 10K, placing tenth overall in 45:47.

Jonathan Manry of Capital City Runners was second in the 10K, running 38:25. Mickey Moore was the top master runner in the race, placing third overall in 38:42. Master runner Gary Johnson was fourth in 42:56 and Ben Kirbo, a seventh-grader on the Holy Comforter cross-country team, was fifth in 43:00.

Florida State University student Emily Long was the second woman and eighteenth overall in 49:43. Maclay School frosh cross-country runner Avery Smith placed third in the women's standings and twentieth overall in 40:13. Paula O'Neill of Tallahassee was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, 21st overall in 50:54. Ormond Beach, Florida athlete Ashley Young was fifth on the women's side and 22nd overall in 51:02.

Eric Godin of Tallahassee won the shorter race, running the five kilometers in 18:24. Leo Kelly, a seventh-grader on the Holy Comforter cross-country team, took second in 19:42. Matthias Laywell, an alumnus of the John Paul II cross-country team, placed third in 20:26. Bill McNulty was the first master runner in the 5K and fourth overall in 20:31.

The Tallahassee Community College Eagles were well represented in the race, with members of their women's cross-country squad taking the first two spots in the women's standings of the 5K. Samantha Reilly took the women's title in 20:57, and Mia Wiederkeher was the women's runner-up in 22:14. Reilly and Wiederkehr were seventh and eighth overall. Sixteen-year-old Tallahassee athlete Kendall Ward was third on the women's side and fourteenth overall in 22:57. Krista Killius was the first woman master and fourth female finisher in the 5K, coming in eighteenth overall in 24:09. Another TCC harrier, Ellie Stubblefield, was the fifth woman and nineteenth overall in 24:24.

Godin and Gorman triumph on the trail at Oak Hammock

Dashing away from the field in the final 800 meters, Eric Godin won the Oak Hammock Trail Race, the second event in Gulf Winds Track Club's 2016 Summer Trail Series. Katie Gorman got her second women's title in the series, placing fourth overall. 123 athletes finished the nine-kilometer race, held on the north side of Tallahassee, Florida in Phipps Park on Saturday morning, 4 June 2016.


"What would you say is the difference in elevation between the lowest point on the course and the highest point on the course?" wondered one of the athletes after the race.

The leaders with two miles to go

It was a natural question to ask after five-and-a-half miles on hilly trails. The run had started north of the park's soccer fields, a bit over 200 feet above sea level, then headed for Lake Jackson, less than 100 feet above sea level. After descending nearly to the shores of the lake halfway through the run, the course took the athletes back to the soccer fields and the finish line. This meant that not only was there a net elevation difference of over 100 feet, but that the second half of the race was mostly uphill--the half of the race when the trail runners were already tired, and the morning temperatures had started to rise.


On the way down toward the lake, a lead pack of three runners opened a gap on the field--Eric Godin, Paul Guyas, and Greg Bargo. Bargo was a veteran of five earlier trail series races, including a win in the 2015 Red Bug Trail Run. Guyas had run four series races since 2013 and Godin two, but neither had posted a win. Bargo had the better record, but maybe Guyas and Godin were hungrier. Whatever their reasons, the three stayed together out front for the entire mostly-downhill first half of the race, and also for the better part of the mostly-uphill second half of the race. Finally, though, that changed.


"We were all together till about five miles, then I went," said Godin. "I knew that Paul had a kick, so I had to make a move with about half a mile to go. I had run the course a week ago so I knew where that was. I think Paul suffered from not knowing the course."

Godin surged ahead. Bargo went with him at first, but then fell back to be overtaken by Guyas. Back at the soccer fields Godin crossed the finish line in 42:53, securing his first Summer Trail Series victory. Guyas was second in 43:03 and Bargo third in 43:11.


At the first Summer Trail Series event of the year, the Magnolia Trail Race on 21 May 2016, the top three women had been Katie Gorman, Meg Ogle, and Jocelyn Chan. At the Oak Hammock Trail Race the same trio was at the top of the women's standings--Gorman finishing fourth overall in 45:23, Ogle seventh overall in 46:06, and Chan sixteenth overall in 51:46. For each of the three runners it was also their second Trail Series race. However, Gorman had finished 84 seconds ahead of Ogle at Magnolia Trail, but the margin was down to 43 seconds at Oak Hammock. Was it and indication of even closer races in the women's division in the remaining events of the Trail Series?

There are, after all, two more races in the 2016 Summer Trail Series. Race directors Jim and Kristin Halley were relieved to have the Oak Hammock Trail in the books, but the second half of the season is still ahead--the Red Bug Trail Race on 9 July 2016 and the Cadillac Trail Race on 30 July 2016.

Godin and Hayden prosper on the longer trail at “Tails & Trails”

Since the very first Tails And Trails in 2002 the event has included a 5K. The race had a different name and was in a different month than now, but there was a 5K. In 2006 the race director added a 10K to the program. This year, at the 14th annual Tails And Trails, a half-marathon joined the other races. It wasn't the only 13.1-mile race in Tallahassee. It wasn't even the first trail half-marathon in town. But it was the first Tails And Trails Half Marathon. And it ended with the long climb up from Lake Lafayette to the Tallahassee Animal Services Center that the Tails And Trails races are notorious for.


Eric Godin was the first to finish that climb in the inaugural half marathon, winning the Saturday morning race in 1:25:43. Godin finished over 600 meters ahead of the next finisher, Jonathan Manry of Capital City Runners. Manry's time was 1:28:21. Andy Roberts was the fastest master runner in the long race, placing sixth overall in 1:40:08.


Mary Jane Hayden won the women's title, coming in 13th overall in 1:49:34. April Bentley was the top woman master, finishing fourth in the women's standings and 21st overall in 1:56:07.


92 athletes finished the first Tails And Trails half-marathon.

Unlike the brand-new half-marathon, the Tails And Trails 10K has some history behind it. Part of that history is that Leon High distance runner Matt Cashin won the race in 2014. Cashin repeated that performance in 2015. The sophomore won the 10K again, this time by more than 300 meters in 37:22. FAMU professor Geb Kiros was the top master in the 6.2-mile race, finishing second overall in 38:41. Placing 24th and 25th overall, Brittney Barnes edged Jillian Heddaeus for the women's crown, 46:04 to 46:15. Coming in 45th overall in 59:35, Katie Clark was the top woman master and eighth female finisher.


278 athletes finished the 10K at the 2015 Tails And Trails.

Finishing more than half a kilometer ahead of the runner-up, Roger Schmidt of Capital City Runners won the 14th Tails And Trails 5K in 17:06. Placing seventh overall in 20:25, Alese Autore was the first woman in the 5K--her fourth Tails And Trail win in the last five years. Bob Asztalos was the first master runner to finish the 3.1-mile race, coming in 13th overall in 21:16. Laura Reina was the first woman master and fifth female finisher, placing 34th overall in 23:32.


552 athletes finished the 5K.

McAllister and Daily master the Draggin' in Torreya

In a recent issue of Georgia's Great Places, a magazine published by the Friends of Georgia State Parks, an article about photography in state parks included some advice from Ranger Randell Meeks. One of his tips is:

Take your time. Hike slowly and pay attention to your surroundings. Oftentimes snakes, flowers, and insects are right right there but we pass by them without noticing.

In Florida's Torreya State Park on Saturday, 11 April 2015, 68 athletes had no use for Ranger Meeks' words. They weren't shutterbugs, though; they were the participants in the eighth annual Draggin' Tail Ultra Trail Challenge, featuring a 50K and a 25K race up and down the Apalachicola River bluffs. Charn McAllister won the 50K event, covering the rugged 31 miles in 4:54:04. Some of his competition might consider handing him a camera before the next race. In winning the race, McAllister unseated the Trail Challenge's seven-time defending champion and record holder, Vince Molosky. Until this year Molosky had not only never lost the 50K Trail Challenge, no one but Molosky had ever won it. This time around, though, Molosky was runner-up in 5:16:14. Andy Roberts was the fastest master runner in the 50K, placing third overall in 5:38:12.


Ashley Daily topped the women's standings, placing seventh overall in 6:15:07. Daily had also won the women's title at the 2013 Challenge, where she set the women's event record of 5:47:48. Sandra Garrett was the first woman master and second female finisher in the 50K, coming in 12th overall in 7:36:10. On an unseasonably warm and humid day, 18 ultrarunners finished the long race.

Lake and Sherron each get a second TRBC 10K title

You can't talk to a runner about the Thomasville Road Baptist Church 10K without hearing about the hills. Chris Lake isn't an exception to this rule. Right after winning the 10th annual edition of the race on 7 March 2015, Lakes comments were colored by the hills.


"It's a tough course," Lake said of the Tallahassee, Florida, race. "Tougher than the Springtime 10K. Especially the last mile and a half. The last mile killed me."


Jillian Heddaeus, who finished third in the women's standings, concurred. "I think this course is tougher than Springtime. Last year I ran 50 seconds faster at Springtime than I did here."


"I was dreading the last hill," said women's runner-up Renee Cox. "But overall it wasn't that bad."


It's not just idle chatter. Tallahasseans can see the slopes the runners faced while driving on Thomasville Road between Armistead Road and the the church, or while traveling through the aptly-named Betton Hills section of town. Hilly, tough, or otherwise, Chris Lake won the 6.2-mile race in 34:08, faster than his 34:22 winning time in 2012 and the second-fastest time recorded in the Thomasville Road Baptist Church 10K since the event was first run in 2006. Defending women's champion Katie Sherron was the first female finisher, placing seventh overall in 42:02.


The 10K and a concurrently run 5K started from Thomasville Road Baptist Church just after 8:30 AM on a Saturday morning. 195 athletes finished the 10K and another 236 the 5K but Lake was soon in front of them all, dropping an early challenge by Zach DeVeau. DeVeau held on to finish runner-up in 35:59. Donalsonville, Georgia, athlete Myles Gibson was third in 38:51, the top master runner in the race. David Welling edged Mark Tombrink for fourth, 40:33 to 40:39.


Lake won the race by more than half a kilometer, but the road to the starting line hadn't been smooth.


"I broke my toe after the Gainesville Half Marathon [on 15 February 2015]," said Lake. "I've only been able to train for ten days now."


"My next goal is to get faster in the 10K and 5K and get ready for Springtime and Palace," continued Lake. In addition to the Springtime 10K and Palace Saloon 5K, Lake is also looking ahead to the Shamrock Scurry 5K.


Renee Cox was in front of the women's field for the first half of the race. Katie Sherron, the 2014 women's champion, was never far behind, though.


"I was leading till about mile three," recalled Cox. "Then Katie made a move."


It was a decisive move. Over the second half of the 10K, Sherron built up a lead of over 200 meters on Cox. At the finish line, Sherron was seventh overall in 42:02, capturing her second straight women's crown in the race. Cox was the women's runner-up, tenth overall in 43:03. Heddaeus was third in the women's standings, 12th overall in 43:24. Kory Skrob was the top woman master and ninth female finisher, 37th overall in 49:21.

Eric Godin won the 5K event at the Thomasville Baptist Church Road Races, running 18:38. At 20:22 Scott Minnert was the runner-up and fastest master runner in the 3.1-mile race. Master runner Mary Anne Grayson of Thomasville, Georgia, topped the women's competition in the 5K, coming in fifth overall in 22:17.
