Triumphs for Truchelut and Terry at the Shamrock Scurry

In Tallahassee, Florida, the azaleas, dogwoods, and wisteria aren't always blooming on the day of the annual Shamrock Scurry 5K. For instance, because of the "Storm of the Century" in 1993, the race had to be delayed till May, long after the flowers were gone. But in more than 30 outings, the race has visited the streets of Killearn Estates on a Saturday in March--such as Saturday, 4 March 2023, when blossoms lined the course. That day, Ryan Truchelut won the Shamrock Scurry by over a minute, covering the hilly 3.1-mile course in 18:43. The women's competition was closer, with Ph.D. student Alyssa Terry going 21:25 to outkick Charlotte Sikes and Savannah Stanley.

The first Shamrock Scurry was in 1979, starting and finishing at Killearn United Methodist Church. The course was much the same in 2023, also starting and finishing at the church.


"It's easy to go out too fast in this race because most of the first half is downhill," noted Truchelut.


Unfortunately, that means to get back to the church, there's a lot of uphill during the second half of the race.

Trent Parsons, a cross-country runner at Montford Middle School, set the early pace for the field. Truchelut followed, hitting the first mile in 5:58 before taking charge.


"It was just after the first mile," recalled Trucheulut. "I had a good lead on him before the uphills started."


Up and down, Truchelut left the field far behind on his way back to the church, where he arrived in a winning 18:43. Tallahassee master runner Mike Martinez overtook Parsons late in the race to place second in 19:46. Parson was third in 19:54.

400 meters into the Shamrock Scurry, a pair of middle school athletes led the women's field--Swift Creek sixth-grader Charlotte Sikes and Montford eighth-grader Savannah Stanley. 40 meters behind the two harriers, Jillian Heddaeus and Alyssa Terry shared the third position. Sikes and Stanley were still leading the women with a kilometer to go. Heddaeus hd fallen back. Terry, the 2019 Shamrock Scurry women's champ, continued to trail by 40 meters as the athletes headed toward Pancake Hill, the final climb on the course.

"I didn't think I could catch them," said Terry. "But I finally did on the last tenth of a mile. They had slowed down, but they sped up when I caught up."


Terry sped up as well, and was a step ahead at the finish line where she arrived ninth overall in 21:25--one second faster than she had gone four years earlier when she won her first Shamrock Scurry title. Sikes was also clocked in 21:25, the women's runner-up and tenth overall. Stanley placed third in the women's standings and eleventh overall in 21:28. Heddaeus, once a contender for third, was the fourth women and fourteenth overall in 22:38. Ali Kelly was the first woman master and seventh female finisher, 32nd overall in 24:47.

As in years past, a pancake and sausage breakfast at the church followed the race--more appetizing than a finisher medal. 308 athletes finished the 2023 Shamrock Scurry 5K, and another 141 completed the one-mile fun run. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee, Florida chip-timed the races.

Leonardo Canete and Alyssa Terry conclude the Summer Trail Race Series with wins at Cadillac

At Tallahassee, Florida's Tom Brown Park on Saturday morning, 20 August 2022, the curtain closed on Gulf Winds Track Club's ninth annual Summer Trail Race Series with the fourth and final event in that year's circuit--the Cadillac Trail 9K. Tallahassee master runner Leonardo Canete took first in 37:18, finishing more than 600 meters ahead of the next runner. Alyssa Terry was the first woman in the race, placing fifteenth overall in 48:39.

It wasn't Canete's first time on the Cadillac Trail course.


"I raced here last year in the Summer Trail Series," said Canete. "I think this was my best time on the course today."

It was. In the 2021 race, Canete had led early then finished runner-up to Daniel Wurgler. In 2022, Canete also grabbed the early lead, but this time he never relinquished it, running a winning 37:18. Kyle Kraeft finished second in 40:01; he had been fourth in 2021. Daniel Wurgler, the 2021 champ, placed third in 41:29.


"I was happy being out here among all the familiar faces," said Canete.

It was Canete's eighth Trail Series race and his fourth career win on the circuit. On the women's side, Alyssa Terry was also a Trail Series veteran, having run nine previous events in the Series, including the 2016 Cadillac. In 2022, however, Terry had missed the first three races.


"I was out of town," she explained.

But on that Saturday in August, Terry was in Tallahassee and looking for her first Trail Series win. Soon after the start, she was setting the pace for the women's field, closely followed by Andi Vilardo and Kendall Meikenhous.


"I think they were right behind me for a mile and a half," said Terry.

Meikernhous dropped back first. Vilardo, an eighth-grader on the Montford Middle School cross-country team, had taken the women's title in the previous three Trail Series races, but Terry shook her off as well, opening up a 300-meter lead before crossing the finish line in a winning 48:39. Vilardo took second in the women's division, placing 24th overall in 51:31. Meikenhous was the third woman and 26th overall in 52:15. Katasha Cornwell was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, 27th overall in 52:54.


"There were definitely some challenges in places," said Terry, assessing the course. "Running across broken chunks of concrete, for example.

"I really liked it," said Vilardo. "It was really hilly. I liked all the bridges. It was fun! It was a lot of fun."


And fun is what most trail runners are looking for.


98 athletes finished the 2022 Cadillac Trail 9K. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the event.

Bryce Kelley and Alyssa Terry race for the win at the Run For The Cookies

“I’m mostly training for the Beer Mile,” said Bryce Kelley. “I’ll definitely run the Palace Saloon 5K.”


But malty brews were not at stake in Tallahassee, Florida on Saturday, 8 February 2020. The theme on the Tallahassee Community College campus that morning was baked goods, and Kelley won the 27th annual Run For The Cookies 5K, running 17:02. Alyssa Terry was the first woman in the race, placing fourteenth overall in 19:45.

Ever since it was first run in 1994, the Run For The Cookies has been unique in that each person who enters gets a box of Girl Scout cookies. Award winners get additional cookies; Kelley collected five more boxes for finishing first. The team with the most athletes entered takes home a case. Some people leave the race with a lot of cookies.


The folks in the Run For The Cookies set thoughts of sweets aside at 9:00 AM, lining up for the start of the race. Tallahassee Community College cross-country coach Gary Droze was in the field, the winner of the first four races and the fastest Cookie Runner ever; he went 15:17 in the 1997 event. When the athletes got under way, though, it was Lucas Mauch, a frosh-year cross-country runner at Maclay School, who set the pace. Kelley trailed Mauch, followed by master runners Mike Martinez and Gary Droze.

“I didn’t want to go out in first,” said Kelley. “I thought I could catch him later.”


Martinez, trailing, also liked Kelley’s chances. “He looked really good. He had that bouncy look.”

Before the end of the first mile, Kelley had bounced by Mauch. Kelley was in control of the race after that, edging farther and farther ahead of the field as he cruised along Senator Pat Thomas Boulevard. His lead was nearly 300 meters when he crossed the finish line in a winning 17:02. Martinez overtook Mauch in the last quarter mile of the race to take second in 18:07. Mauch was third in 18:13, and Droze fourth in 18:28.


“Twenty years it took me to catch Gary!” said Martinez. “I had never beaten him before.”

Mauch also had reason to be pleased with his performance. “I think that was my best 5K.”


Jamila Allen was the early leader for the women. Brittney Barnes took over that spot a few minutes into the race. Allen stayed with Barnes, and Amanda Sava and Alyssa Terry were right behind--four athletes vying for the women’s title.

“Brittney passed me about half a mile,” said Allen. “I knew she was on my right, and I could hear two girls behind me, but I didn’t know who they were. So I was running scared.”


“Typically, Alyssa goes by me at a mile and a half,” said Barnes. “Today, everybody went by me about one-point-eight.”

“It was during the first uphill, after we turned back onto Pat Thomas Boulevard,” said Terry. “I was feeling good, so I picked it up. They were still pretty close at the turnaround, but after that I increased my pace again.”


After that, no one was close as Terry built up a lead of over a hundred meters. Her winning time of 19:45 was nearly her best ever.

“My best 5K was Turkey Trot, and I was only two seconds off that today,” said Terry.


Chasing Terry, Amanda Sava and Jamila Allen left Brittney Barnes behind. Sava held the second women’s spot till the final stretch, when Allen sprinted by, edging Sava 20:11 to 20:13. The two were seventeenth and eighteenth overall. Barnes was fourth in the women’s standings and nineteenth overall in 20:40.

337 athletes finished the 2020 Run For The Cookies 5K, and another 83 completed an earlier one-mile fun run. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed both races.

Kyle Kraeft and Monica Judd romp in the Swamp

Phipps Park lies on the north edge of Tallahassee, Florida. The park is host to hikes and cross-country meets, but is probably best know as the site of the Red Hills Horse Trials. This is a bit unfair, because the horses and their riders only see a small corner of the hundreds of acres and miles of trail in Phipps. Athletes in Gulf Winds Track Club's Swamp Forest Trail Races see a lot more of the park, touring a loop nearly seven miles long. At the seventh annual Swamp Forest Trail Run, entries in the Quarter-Marathon got to see that loop once. Those in the Half-Marathon race toured it twice. Athletes in the Twenty-Mile Challenge made three circuits of the loop. Kyle Kraeft of Tallahassee was the first to finish the three laps on Saturday morning, 4 January 2020, winning the race in 3:02:27. Tallahassee master runner Monica Judd was the first woman in the Twenty Mile, placing fifth overall in 3:02:27.

Geb Kiros, a biostatistics professor at Florida A & M University, was the top master runner in the Twenty Mile, coming in second overall in 3:05:41. Gabe Peters of Tallahassee took third in 3:08:42.


Newton, Georgia athlete Christine Sandbach placed runner-up to Judd in the women's division, finishing seventh overall in 3:34:26. Allison Adamov of Niceville, Florida was the third female finisher and eighth overall in 3:37:49.


The Twenty-Mile Challenge was the longest race at the 2020 edition of the Swamp Forest Trail Races, which had included a Marathon from 2014 to 2019 and even a 50-kilometer race in 2019. The marathon had never attracted more than twenty-five finishers though, and during the first six years of the race more than a few athletes had dropped out after the first three laps of a longer race. Race director Bobby York adjusted the program in 2020, making the three-lapper an event, the Twenty-Mile Challenge. The "shorter" race proved a hit, attracting 36 finishers.

The Twenty-Mile Challenge may have been more popular than the trail marathons of previous years, but the Half Marathon has always been one of the most popular events of the Swamp Forest Trail Races. The 2020 half mary had 55 finishers, and the fastest of those was Tristan Lanasa of Tallahassee, who won the race in 1:41:46. Tallahassee master runner Ali Kelly was the first woman in the two-lap event, placing eighth overall in 2:03:20.


Stephen Hennigar of Tallahassee was the second man in the race, just seven seconds behind the winner in 1:41:53. Tallahassee's Eric Schulz took third in 1:53:03. Another Tallahassee runner, Timothy Qualls, was the first master runner in the half marathon and fourth overall in 1:54:01.


Tallahassee master runner Lourena Maxwell took second in the women's standings, coming in tenth overall in 2:11:11. Megan Chapman of Tallahassee was the third woman and eleventh overall in 2:16:39.

Gary Droze was the fastest of the 65 athletes who cast their vote for the Quarter Marathon. A master runner and Tallahassee Community College cross-country coach, Droze set a new course record in the one-lap race, running a winning 51:18. Alyssa Terry of Tallahassee likewise set women's course record, taking the women's title in the Quarter Marathon with a 58:51, good for third overall.


David Huggins of Tallahassee was the overall runner-up, finishing the more-than-six-but-less-than-seven miles in 56:09. Anthony Walker of Tallahassee placed third in the men's standings and fourth overall in 64:14.


Tallahassee's Brandi Campbell was the first woman master and second female finisher, eighth overall in 65:40. Nancy Moody of Tallahassee took third in the women's standings and ninth overall in 67:28.

Sweet, juicy victory for Scott Lloyd and Alyssa Terry at the Melon Run

On Saturday morning, 15 June 2019, the Monticello, Florida Kiwanis Club had placed a water table on the Monticello Bike Trail, close to the halfway point of their 41st annual 5K Melon Run. There was another water table just past the finish line, on top of the infamous Water Street hill. The true treat, though, was a little bit further on at race headquarters in front of the First United Methodist Church. There, a table was piled high with sliced watermelon, sweet and juicy.


The melon table may have been an incentive for many athletes to finish the race a little faster, but none finished as fast as Scott Lloyd. A first-year chemistry major at the University of Central Florida, Lloyd won the 3.1-mile Melon Run in 18:39. Alyssa Terry of Tallahassee was the first woman in the race, coming in ninth overall in 20:27.

The runners lined up for the 8:15 start on West Washington Street, Monticello's main east-west artery, in front of the Methodist Church and less than three blocks from the Jefferson County Courthouse. By the end of the first kilometer, Scott Lloyd and Myles Gibson had broken away from the rest of the field. Gibson, a Donalsonville, Georgia master runner, dueled with Lloyd for the lead.


“He kept getting five steps ahead, but I’d come back,” said Lloyd. “He was the one pushing the pace.”

“I got out and got into the lead on the first hill,” said Gibson. “I felt good until two miles.”


Just after two miles, the runners left the bike trail to race west on Chase Drive. That was where Lloyd took over.

“I tried to stay with that young runner as long as I could,” said Gibson. “The last hill murdered me.”


The “last hill” was the final 400 meters of the race, a slope on Water Street equivalent to climbing to the seventh floor of a high rise. Lloyd reached the top first in 18:39. Gibson was runner-up in 19:05.

Behind Lloyd and Gibson, three runners reached the bottom of Water Street together--Dalton Gray, Noah Deem, and Jack McDermott. Gray, a member of the Tallahassee Community College cross-country team, got away on the uphill to take third with a 19:22, leaving twelve-year-old Deem and Tallahassee master runner Jack McDermott fighting for fourth. Deem, a sixth-grader on the Community Leadership Academy cross-country team, edged McDermott for the spot, 19:30 to 19:32.


Lilli Unger and Alyssa Langston shared the lead in the women’s competition through the first three kilometers of the race. Both were cross-country runners--Unger a rising junior on the Leon High team, and Langston a 2019 graduate of Wakulla High where she was a harrier for four years. Alyssa Terry trailed them.

“I felt good after the first mile, so I picked it up,” said Terry.


During the second mile, Terry narrowed Langston and Unger’s lead. During the third mile she passed them. Langston gave chase, but Terry was the first woman to the top of Water Street, running 20:27. Langston took second in the women’s standings and twelfth overall in 20:47. Unger was the third woman and fourteenth overall in 21:13. Monica Judd of Tallahassee was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, 21st overall in 22:08.

Lloyd, the overall winner, had been the ace on the Wakulla High cross-country team in 2018, but had gotten out of running since heading to UCF.


“I didn’t really start running again till February,” said Lloyd. “It’s been fun getting back into it.”


For the present, he plans to stay into it.

“I’ll probably run the Paul Hoover 5K in two weeks,” said Lloyd.


That seventh annual race at Wakulla Springs honors the late Paul Hoover, Lloyd’s coach for three of his four years at Wakulla High.


194 athletes finished the Monticello Kiwanis’ 2019 Melon Run 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the race.
