Trevor Sununu and Erika Huerta charge through the Killearn hills for Shamrock Scurry wins

Trevor Sununu went right to the front then kept on going, winning the 32nd annual Shamrock Scurry 5K on Saturday morning, 7 March 2020. Sununu's time at 17:32 for the 3.1-mile run through Tallahassee, Florida's Killearn Estates neighborhood. Erika Huerta was the first woman in the race, placing eighth overall in 19:33.

The race began just after 8:30 AM near Killearn United Methodist Church. Three past Shamrock Scurry winners shared the starting line with Sununu--2019 winner and defending champion Charlie Johnson, 2016 winner Duane Evans, and 2006 winner Mike Martinez. Sununu had left them all far behind before the end of the first mile. Chance Logan was leading the pursuit at that point, followed by Johnson, Michael Nesius, Ryan Truchelut, and Mike Martinez.

"I tried to hang with those guys as long as I could," said Martinez. "They were tough."

The first half of the race was mostly downhill. The second half, heading toward the finish line back at the church, was mainly uphill. Up or down didn't seem to matter to Sununu.

"My pacing was pretty even," said Sununu. "5:30 miles across the board."

Nesius and Martinez dropped back. Climbing a hill near the two-mile mark, Logan shook off Charlie Johnson. Logan couldn't get rid of Truchelut, though.

"Ryan said he was gaining on me on the first hill," said Logan. "Then he caught me right before the end. I think I went out too fast."

"I had to chase him down," said Truchelut. "But it was my favorite kind of race, a drag race in the last tenth of a mile. It was my favorite temperature, in the forties, and my favorite kind of race, a drag race."

Sununu had already crossed the finish line in a winning 17:32 when Truchelut and Logan came sprinting up, Truchelut edging Logan for the runner-up spot 17:55 to 17:57. Charlie Johnson was the first master runner in the race, taking fourth in 18:04. Nesius was fifth in 18:12 and master runner Martinez sixth in 18:29.

Katie Sherron had been the first woman in the Shamrock Scurry in 2014, 2017, and 2018. A mile into the 2020 race, the three-time winner was racing alongside another Tallahassee athlete, Brittney Barnes. But over a hundred meters ahead of them, Erika Huerta was leading the women's field. A south Florida athlete, Huerta was in Tallahassee attending FDLE's Special Agent Training Academy. Two weeks before the Shamrock Scurry she had scored a win at the Mardi Gras 5K in Panama City Beach, Florida. The Killearn Estates course had some unfamiliar features for Huerta, though.

"We don't have hills like this in Miami," said Huerta. "It was a challenging course."

Huerta met the challenge, winning the women's title by well over 200 meters in 19:33. Barnes got away from Sherron to come in second in the women's standings and fourteenth overall in 20:33. Sherron was the third woman and twentieth overall in 20:53. Laura Reina was the top woman master and sixth female finisher, 38th overall in 22:24.

Huerta's best mark for 5K on the roads is 18:04, but she doesn't want to stop there.

"It's been six months I've been training to break 18:00," said Huerta. "Soon! Maybe at the Corporate Run."

The Miami Corporate Run 5K is slated for 23 April 2020. 18:00 would have won the women's division at the race in 2019.
