Linton and Sherron score at the Scurry

Stanley LintonIn 2013 Stanley Linton won Killearn United Methodist Church's annual Shamrock Scurry 5K, running 16:13. So what do you do once you've won a race? Well, you can go on to other events. Or you can come back the next year and try to win again. You can return and try to run faster.

Again and faster is exactly what Stanley Linton did at this year's Shamrock Scurry on Saturday morning, 8 March 2014. The sophomore NROTC midshipman from Florida State successfully defended his title, winning by over a minute in 15:44. Sean Hudson was the first master runner, coming in seventh overall in 18:21. Katie Sherron led the women finishers, placing 18th overall in 19:48. And for the fifth year in a row, Mary Anne Grayson was the top woman master, finishing 37th overall in 21:27. 677 athletes finished the race.

Vince Molosky
Stanley Linton wasn't the only runner with ambitions lining up next to Killearn United Methodist Church for the 8:30 AM start of the race. Vince Molosky, who had won the Gulf Winds Track Club 30K back in January, was also there. So was Zach DeVeau, winner as the Sisson Memorial 5K just two weeks earlier. Peter Kaus, the 2011 Shamrock Scurry 5K champion, was on the starting line. Chris Lake would also be racing for the Shamrock Scurry title. Lake was coming off an injury, but had won nearly every major race in the area while losing only a handful of times from 2008 to 2012.

Disregarding the resumes of his rivals, Linton went right to the front. He was already well ahead of everyone when he passed the mile mark in 4:54. Vince Molosky led the pursuit. Zach DeVeau stayed with Molosky initially, but fell back after the first half mile. Lurking in fourth place, Chris Lake stalked the leaders.

Chris Lake
Up front, though, it was Linton versus the clock. He continued to pull away from Molosky and company, reaching the finish line in a winning 15:44. It was the fastest time run on the course since the Shamrock Scurry was revived in 2010. Meanwhile, Chris Lake had picked off Zach DeVeau to move into third, while starting to close in on Vince Molosky. But Molosky was able to stay ahead of Lake and claim the runner-up spot in 16:45. Lake was third in 16:52. Holding off a late surge from Nate Kaiser, DeVeau took fourth, 16:59 to 17:02. 2011 Scurry champion Peter Kaus was sixth in 17:58.

Katie Sherron
Most of the first half of the Shamrock Scurry course is downhill, and Jillian Heddaeus took advantage of the slope to get out ahead of the rest of the women's field. During the second mile, though, Heddaeus was overtaken by Micah Adriani. Chasing Adriani was Katie Sherron. Sherron had finished second in the women's standings of the 2012 Shamrock Scurry, losing a late fight for the title to Carrie Seiberlich. In this year's race, heading for the two mile mark, Sherron made her move. It was on one of the biggest uphills on the Shamrock Scurry course.

Micah Adriani"Katie got me on the hill right before two miles," recalled Adriani. "She was racing up it, and I was walking."

From there Katie Sherron raced home to take the women's title in 19:48. Micah Adriani was the second woman finisher, placing 25th overall in 20:09. Jillian Heddaeus hung on to the third woman's spot, coming in 27th overall in 20:24. Renee Cox was the fourth woman, 28th overall in 20:41.

Following the race, each runner was served the pancake breakfast that has become traditional at the Shamrock Scurry 5K. Sometimes you need external motivation to finish a run, especially one as hilly as the Shamrock Scurry.
