Mike Martinez and Mo Palmer get Trash Dash 5K wins on the classic cross-country course at ARPXC

What New York's Yankee Stadium is to baseball, Tallahassee, Florida's Apalachee Regional Park could very well be to cross-country. The Apalachee Regional Park Cross-Country Course first opened in 2009, so it isn't nearly as old as the House That Ruth Built. But during those years, ARPXC has hosted two USATF National Championship Cross-Country Meets, a variety of other national championships, and several NCAA Regional Championships. The course has become the regular venue for Florida's high school state championship meet and the junior college state championship. It's the home course for the Florida State University Seminoles.


But while no one is going to let you onto the field at Yankee Stadium for a game of catch, you can head out to the Apalachee Regional Park Cross-Country Course for a run on almost any day of the year. And there are even a few days a year where there are races that anyone can run, not just the pros. One of those days was Saturday morning, 26 October 2019, and the race was the ninth annual Trash Dash 5K. Tallahassee master runner Michael Martinez won the 3.1-mile cross-country race, running 19:14. The first woman in the race and overall runner-up was Morgan "Mo" Palmer, who covered the course in 19:43.

Palmer, an alumna of Palmer High, has run faster at ARPXC, notable running 19:15 just fifteen days before the Trash Dash at the FSU Invitational. That day she was suited up for the Florida State University women's cross-country team. So was Riley Bahr, the women's runner-up at the Trash Dash, who placed third overall in 19:38. Ashley David, the third woman and sixth overall in 20:03, is also a Florida State harrier. In fact, the first seven women in the race were all Florida State Seminoles. If the Trash Dash had been a cross-country meet, the Florida State women would have scored a perfect fifteen.


Ashton Smith was second in the men's standings, placing fourth overall in 19:43. Tallahassee master runner Tony Guillen was the third male finisher and fifth overall in 19:54.


100 athletes finished the 2019 Trash Dash 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the race.

Michael Martinez and Rebecca Petersen led the hunt at the Wildlife Run

Opening Pelham, Georgia' annual Wildlife Festival, dozens of athletes took to the streets of that city on Friday evening, 4 October 2019, competing in the Wildlife Run 5K. Mike Martinez came out on top of that competition; posting a winning time of 18:49, the Tallahassee, Florida master runner finished more than a kilometer ahead of his closest rival. Rebecca Petersen was the first woman in the race, placing eighth overall in 28:59.


Thirteen-year-old Riley Brown was the runner-up for the second year in a row. Brown covered the 3.1-mile course in 23:49. Caleb Busker was third in 24:04.


Elise Cox took second in the women's standings and eleventh overall in 30:50. Master runner Peggy Willis was the third female finisher and thirteenth overall in 31:40.


47 athletes finished the 2019 Pelham Wildlife Run 5K. Miles & Minutes, LLC, of Tallahassee, Florida timed and scored the race.

Jim Halley and Monica Toth headline the return of the Swarm 10K

If you want to run a 10K in Tallahassee, there’s the Springtime Road Race. A downtown race, Springtime has been around for more than forty years and there are hundreds of other athletes to keep you company. But what if you were doing something else that day?


“I was doing an adventure race in Steinhatchee with Monica and Kristen,” said Jim Halley. “Six hours! Five-and-a-half hours.”

Anyone who missed Springtime, like Halley, didn’t have to wait long for another chance to race 10K. Just a week later, on Saturday morning, Apr. 6, Conley Elementary hosted the Yellow Jacket Swarm 10K in Southwood. Halley won that 6.2-mile race, running 42:25. Monica Toth, who had run Springtime, got to log a second 10K. She was the first woman at the Swarm, placing third overall in 50:50.


It’s not that Halley has never raced Springtime; he’s run there four times. How does the Swarm compare?


“It’s harder, harder,” said Halley. “You don’t have a net downhill like Springtime. I think Southwood is hillier.”

Springtime starts on top of the same hill that the state capital rests on. Similarly, the Swarm starts at Conley Elementary near the crest of the Cody Escarpment, a slope marking the transition from the Red Hills to the coastal plane. Springtime, though, never returns to the hilltop near the capital. Runners in the Swarm have to climb back up the Cody Escarpment to Conley Elementary and the finish line.


Southwood was covered with fog when the Swarm 10K started at 8:30 AM. The Swarm 5K started at the same time, and athletes in both races headed south through the mist on Four Oaks Boulevard. After two kilometers, the courses for the two events separated, leaving Halley alone in front of the 10K field.

“I had humidity to keep me company,” said Halley.


That was his only companion for the rest of the race. Gavin Jameson was a distant runner-up in 47:48.

In the women’s competition, master runner Samantha Fillmore was leading when the 10K and 5K courses split, reaching that point more than half a minute ahead of Monica Toth and Shelly Herman. Toth overtook Fillmore during the second half of the race, and was fifteen seconds up by the end of the eighth kilometer. That margin grew on the way back to the school, where Toth took the women’s title in 50:50. Fillmore was second in 51:53, and Herman third in 54:23.

Halley trailed only two 5K runners at the split, and one of those was the pacesetter of the shorter race, master runner Michael Martinez. Martinez continued to lead the 5K, running a winning 19:15. Steven Wilson was second in 21:06, and Cadden Maxwell, a sixth-grader on the Raa Middle School cross-country team, placed third in 24:02.

At 25:40, Bridget Joyner was the first woman in the 5K. Sarah Durrance was the women's runner-up in 32:00. Katrina Harris was the first woman master and third female finisher, running 33:56.

The Swarm was run annually each autumn from 2011 to 2013, but was on hiatus until being revived as a spring race this year. Miles and Minutes, LLC, of Tallahassee timed the 5K and 10K races at the 2019 Swarm, as well as a one-mile fun run.

Speed made the difference for Mike Martinez and Paula O'Neill at the MAD Dash 5K

It could have been a match race on the streets of Tallahassee, Florida between Michael Martinez and Myles Gibson. By the end of Harvest of Life Ministry’s Make-A-Difference Dash 5K, the two master runners were more than 600 meters ahead of the rest of the field, practically in a race by themselves. And when Martinez crossed the finish line at Thomasville Baptist Church that Saturday morning, 23 March 2019, he was a hundred meters ahead of Gibson. Martinez had won the inaugural MAD Dash 5K, running 18:36 to Gibson’s 19:00. Master runner Paula O’Neill was the first woman in the race, placing sixth overall in 23:15.

The 5K started from Thomasville Road Baptist Church at 8:30 AM, following a one-mile fun run. Martinez and Gibson put a gap on the field right away. Sometimes Gibson would lead, sometimes Martinez.


“He’s a good downhill runner,” Martinez said about Gibson. “He didn’t seem to be feeling well on the uphill, so I would get away from him. But he would come back on the downhill.”

On a long, uphill stretch near the end of the third kilometer, Martinez got away from Gibson for the final time. Martinez pulled steadily away after that on the way back to the church and his 18:36 win.


“Myles was getting over a cold, so he wasn’t racing like usual today,” said Martinez. “I’ll take it, though!”


Behind Martinez and Gibson, fourteen-year-old Jaze Buchheister took third in 21:43.

The MAD Dash wasn’t the first race to be run from the church. The Thomasville Road Baptist Church Road Race had been run in the area annually on the first Saturday in March from 2006 to 2016, and ten of those eleven years the event had included a 5K race. In fact, the course for the MAD Dash was the same as that for the Thomasville Road Baptist Church 5K, but run in reverse. Martinez, though, had never run the previous race.


“I had never seen it before,” he said. “I like the course.”

Unlike Martinez, after the MAD Dash Paula O’Neill had run the course in both directions.


“This was a tougher course that the old 5K,” insisted O’Neill. “It was a lot harder.”


O'Neill started the race with another master runner, Shelby Augustyniak. She was soon ahead of Augustyniak, but never forgot about her.

“Oh, I knew she was behind me,” said O’Neill. “That was my incentive to keep going.”


O’Neill kept going, returning to the church in 23:15. She was pleased with the performance.


“I don’t know where I pulled that from,” said O’Neill. “I haven’t been doing any speedwork, and I’ve only been able to run every other day.”

Augustyniak was runner-up in the women’s standings, placing eighth overall in 24:01. Carrie Smith was the third female finisher and thirteenth overall in 26:05.

Antonio Marchi rocks a 31:41 in the Crowdis 10K

10K records just don’t last in Blakely, Georgia. After a 10K race was added to the city’s annual Dr James Crowdis Run in 2017, the course records have fallen each year. In 2018 Dr Patrick Whitehead rolled to a 35:59 win, breaking his own 2017 course record of 36:24. Ann Centner topped the women’s competition in 2018 with a 41:32, demolishing the women’s course record of 54:43, established in 2017 by Katie Sheppard.


And on Saturday morning, 19 January 2019, at the 23rd Crowdis Run Antonio Marchi ran the 10K in 31:41, winning the race by more than two kilometers. In case you haven’t been following, that was also a new course record. There was a new women’s course record as well; sixteen-year-old Viviana Schuyler took the women’s title in 41:22, knocking off Centner’s 2018 mark while placing third overall.


The Crowdis Run began in 1981 as a 5K. The 5K is still part of the Crowdis, starting at the same time and following the same course as the 10K. The 2019 races started from Blakely First United Methodist Church with Antonio Marchi quickly bolting out ahead of the entire field, 5K and 10K runners alike. There must have been some excitement back at the church when Marchi came back into sight at the end of his first five-kilometer loop, with the spectators thinking that they were about to see the first sub-16:00 at Crowdis since 1992. Instead, they saw Marchi ignore the 5K finish line and turn back onto the course for another five kilometers of running. The next time Marchi appeared at the church he did cross the finish line, astonishing the onlookers with his winning 31:41. Most of the 5K field was still out on the course.


Myles Gibson of Donalsonville, Georgia was the first master runner in the race, placing second overall in 39:00, his second straight year in the runner-up spot. A prominent figure in Crowdis history, Gibson had won the 5K in 1993, 2014, and 2015. Master runner Jay Wrenn was third in the men's competition and fourth overall, running 47:18.


Viviana Schuyler had finished second to Ann Centner in the women's competition at the 2018 Crowdis. Centner wasn't at the race in 2019, having since moved from Blakely to Tallahassee, Florida. But if Schuyler couldn't race Centner then she could race Centner's record. The Bainbridge High sophomore cross-country runner did just that, trimming ten seconds off the women's course record with her 41:22. Adrian Parker was second to Schuyler in the women's standings, placing eleventh overall in 55:59. Chandra Hanson was the first woman master and third female finisher, fourteenth overall in 64:49.

Alan Flores, a frosh-year runner on the cross-country team at Northview High, finihsed second to Martinez in 19:41. Headland High junior-year cross-country runner Will Scott was third in 19:55.


Dothan, Alabama master runner Carolyn Houston took second in the women's standings, placing twelfth overall in 23:44. Gail Morris was the third woman and fifteenth overall in the 5K with a 24:36.

Martinez and Wise highlight the launch of the Dueno Memorial Run

On Saturday morning, 9 September 2017, nearly all of Florida was anticipating the onslaught of Hurricane Irma. Just north of the state line, though, in Bainbridge, Georgia the weather was fair, the air was cool, and the Flint River was low. In short, conditions were excellent for the inaugural Dr. Eric Dueno Memorial 5K. 59 athletes took advantage of those conditions, including Tallahassee, Florida master runner Mike Martinez. Martinez won the race by close to 100 meters, running 19:58. Amber Wise of Bainbridge took the women's title, placing seventh overall in 21:55.


Bainbridge master runner Pauncho Hufstetler placed second overall, running 20:22. Filippo Aldrovandi-Reina, an eighth-grader on the Deerlake Middle School cross-country team in Tallahassee, was third in 20:27.


Laura Reina of Tallahassee was the first woman master and second female finisher, twelfth overall in 23:10. Paige Braswell placed third in the women's standings and sixteenth overall in 25:21.


The race was held in memory of Dr. Eric Dueno, a beloved runner and Bainbridge State College chemistry professor.

Martinez and Terry were beyond reach at Beyond The Burns

Finishing first in a field of 176 athletes, Tallahassee master runner Michael Martinez won the Beyond The Burns 5K in Maclay Gardens State Park on the north side of Tallahassee, Florida. Martinez ran the 3.1-mile course in 18:49, finishing almost 160 meters ahead of the next runner. Alyssa Terry, a Florida State University graduate student and alumna of the Wellington High cross-country team, took the women's title in 22:13, placing fourth overall.


Behind Martinez, Mason McCord took second in the Beyond The Burns 5K, posting a 19:26 on the 3.1-mile course. Master runner Beau Jackson was third overall in 22:07.


While Martinez finished the race more than half a minute before his nearest rival, the women's competition was much closer. The runner-up in the women's standings, Monica Judd, was less than five seconds behind women's champ Alyssa Terry. Judd finished the race sixth overall in 22:18, the top woman master in the race. Abbey Schultz, a senior on the Lincoln High cross-country team, was third on the women's side, coming in twelfth overall in 23:08.


176 athletes finished the Beyond The Burns 5K and another 46 completed a one-mile fun run. The event wasn't without its problems. On the eve of the race, a large tree fell in Maclay Gardens, blocking the course. Race management scrambled and produced an accurately measured replacement route.


Organized by Freedom Church, all proceeds of the Beyond The Burns 5K and one-mile fun run went to fund the healing of two pediatric burn survivors injured in a demonstration at a local summer camp.

One last win in 2015 for Martinez and Green

Master runners Michael Martinez and Debbie Green wrapped up the old year with wins at the New Year's Eve 5K in Valdosta, Georgia, on Thursday evening, 31 December 2015. Tallahassee's Martinez was the overall winner in 18:01 while Valdosta's Green took the women's title, placing seventh overall in 22:59.


The fourth annual race took place at Lowndes High School, two laps around a loop of the campus. After the first lap Michael Martinez trailed Andrew Elam and Quin McGlamery. Elam was the 2014 champion of the race and the course record holder. McGlamery, a sophomore on the Valdosta High cross country team, had also run the New Year's Eve 5K the previous year, placing ninth. Martinez was running the race for the first time, but his lack of experience didn't show. On the second lap Martinez left Elam and McGlamery behind--almost 200 meters behind. Martinez won the race in 18:01, and Elam edged McGlamery 18:38 to 18:41 for second. Valdosta Master runner Rick Mazurkiewicz was fourth in 20:49.


Debbie Green has run all four of Valdosta's New Year's Eve 5K races, collecting a second place in the women's standings in 2012, a third place in 2013, and a fourth place in 2014. In 2015 she completed the set, finishing first on the women's side in 22:59. Lauren Bewley of Valdosta was the women's runner-up, placing twelfth overall in 23:47. Valdosta master runner Martha Mazurkiewicz was the third woman finisher, thirteenth overall in 24:40.


61 athletes finished the fourth annual New Year's Eve 5K, a production of A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia.

Martinez and Centner run hot times at the Frosty 5K

After the 2015 Swine Time 5K, Tallahassee master runner Michael Martinez talked about the mental difficulties of catching another runner late in the race.


"That's when your mind plays tricks on you," said Martinez. "You start thinking, even if you do catch him, he's gonna have a kick."


But Martinez has a kick himself, as Dustin Reynolds found out a week later at the fourth annual Frosty 5K on Saturday afternoon, 5 December 2015. Martinez edged Reynolds, a Seminole County High cross country runner, 17:27 to 17:29, to win the 3.1-mile race through Georgia's Seminole State Park.

In another close finish, Nick Batchelor was third in 18:57 and Ann Centner fourth in 18:58. 18:58 was fast enough to earn Centner the women's title. Seminole County Middle School cross country runner Macy Williams was second in the women's standings, finishing tenth overall in 22:49. Meg Houston was the third female finisher, eleventh overall in 24:04.


80 athletes finished the 2015 Frosty 5K, part of Seminole State Park's annual Tour of Lights Festival. The race was sponsored by the Friends of Seminole State Park.

October's fastest Challengers are Martinez and Thompson

On Saturday morning, 24 October 2015, Michael Martinez notched yet another road race win, this time in his home town of Tallahassee, Florida. The 49-year-old master runner ran 19:04 for 3.1 miles through the streets around Canopy Oaks Elementary School, finishing first in the TMH For Life Challenge October 5K. 10-year-old Layla Thompson was the first female finisher, completing the USATF-certified course in 22:19 and placing eighth overall. 98 athletes finished the 5K.


Behind Martinez, Raa Middle School cross-country runner Nile Bryant outkicked Tim Unger for second place, both runners clocked in 20:09.


Former Niceville High cross country runner Abby McCool was second in the women's standings, placing tenth overall in 22:21. Lisa Unger was the top woman master and third female finisher, coming in 22nd overall in 26:00.


The race was the third 5K this year in the TMH For Life Challenge, a program created by Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare to lead the community to be active, eat healthier, monitor and maintain the body, and be happy. Chip timing was provided by the Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee, Florida.

No rust on Martinez or Hamilton at the Cast Iron 5K

Michael Martinez isn't at every road race in the region. It just seems that way.


Wherever you do spot the Tallahassee master runner though, he's sure to be near the front. In the first ten months of 2015, Martinez logged wins in Blountstown, Live Oak, Bainbridge, and even his hometown, Tallahassee. On 10 October 2015 Martinez was on the Gulf Coast, logging a second place finish in the Apalachicola, Florida, Brat' Trot 5K. Exactly one week later on another Saturday morning, he was far inland in Quitman, Georgia, home of the annual Brooks County Skillet Festival. There, Martinez won the Cast Iron 5K, running 18:17. Thomasville, Georgia, distance runner Beverly Hamilton was the top woman in the race, placing fifth overall in 22:25.


Directly behind Martinez, Thomasville master runner Chad Johnson took second in 20:35. At 21:56, third place went to another master runner, Rob Sheridan of Valdosta, Georgia.


Valdosta, Georgia, athlete Debbie Green was the first woman master and the second female finisher, coming in eighth overall in 22:54. Twelve-year-old Brenna Clark of Valdosta was third in the women's standings, placing ninth overall in 23:04.


74 athletes finished the fifth annual Cast Iron 5K. Timing and finish line services were provided by A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia.

At the Hog Jog, Martinez is harder to catch than a greased pig

The promoters of the Smokin' on the Suwannee BBQ Festival claim that grillers from all over the Southeast come to Live Oak, Florida, to compete in their barbecue contest. While the same can't be said of the festival's road race, the Hog Jog 5K, it is true that master runner Michael Martinez drove all the way from Tallahassee to run the fourth annual event on Saturday morning, 25 July 2015. And run he did, winning the five kilometer race by more than a kilometer while posting a time of 18:04 for the 3.1 miles through the streets of Live Oak.


Natalie Lord, a sophomore on the Suwannee High cross country team, finished second overall in the Hog Jog 5K, winning the women's title in 23:24.


31 athletes finished the race. Proceeds of the Hog Jog 5K and the other events at the Smokin' on the Suwannee BBQ Festival support the Back To School Bash.

Bainbridge Memorial Day wins for Martinez and Martin

On Saturday morning, 23 May 2015, Michael Martinez was at Eglin Air Force Base, finishing fourth in the Gate-to-Gate Run. The Memorial Day weekend was just getting started for the Tallahassee, Florida, master runner though. On Monday evening, 25 May 2015, he was in Bainbridge, Georgia, where he won that city's ninth annual Memorial Day 5K Night Race. Martinez finished around 200 meters ahead of the next runner, covering the 3.1-mile course in 17:46. Donalsonville, Georgia, master runner Myles Gibson was second overall in 18:20, just ahead of the 18:28 that earned third place for Travis Parker. Lance Williams finished fourth in 19:12.


Wakulla High sophomore Haleigh Martin took the women's title, placing tenth overall in 21:33. Paige Braswell, a University of West Georgia distance runner, was second in the women's standings, finishing eleventh overall in 21:59. Darla Castoro was the third female finisher and first woman master, coming in 19th overall in 25:23.


71 athletes finished the 2015 Bainbridge Memorial Day 5K Night Race. The race is a fundraiser for the Bainbridge High School cross country teams.
