Hermine can't halt Butzin or Green

Hurricane HermineVery early on Friday morning, 2 September 2016, Hurricane Hermine made landfall along the coast of the Florida Panhandle. A few hours the storm went by Valdosta, Georgia. The center didn't blow right up Hill Avenue, but it was close. Over two days nearly five inches of rain were recorded in the city.

Several road races and cross country meets scheduled in the area for that Labor Day Weekend were canceled. But in Valdosta, the eighth annual Labor Day 5K went on as planned on Monday morning, 4 September 2016. Dan Butzin won the post-Hermine race through the streets of Valdosta in 18:03, while master runner Debbie Green took the women's title in 21:44, placing eleventh overall.

Half a minute behind Butzin, Deshon Taylor, a junior on the Valdosta High cross country team, was runner-up in 18:33. Nicholas Rosatti of Hahira, Georgia placed third in 18:54. John Bolmer of Nashville, Georgia was the first master runner in the race, placing ninth overall in 21:08.

Debbie Green was just ahead of the next runner in the women's standings, Elizabeth Smith of Valdosta. The second woman across the finish line, Smith was twelfth overall in 21:48.

Alden Lisse, a junior at Highland Christian Academy, edged Kelly Davis of Valdosta for third in the women's standings, 23:02 to 23:06. Lisse and Davis were eighteenth and nineteenth overall.

106 athletes finished Valdosta's eighth annual Labor Day 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.

Kelly and Green lead the march through Barnes Healthcare's second century

Barnes HealthcareBarnes Healthcare in Valdosta, Georgia has been around for over a hundred years. As Southern institutions go that's not as old as Coca-Cola, but it's still pretty old. You'll be able to tell when the business reaches 200, because that will be about the time that you hear word of the 101st running of the Barnes Healthcare 5K. The race may still be run in downtown Valdosta at that far future date, although the title probably won't be decided by another duel between Valdosta-area runners Dan Butzin and Ryan Kelly. The race did come down to such a duel during the last two years. Butzin got the decision over Kelly in 2015, beating the Valdosta High coach 18:12 to 18:24. At the eighth annual race, though, on Saturday morning, 16 July 2016, Kelly was victorious, outrunning Butzin 18:29 to 18:33. It was Kelly's second Barnes Healthcare 5K title; he had also won the race in 2013.

While Kelly and Butzin were fighting for the top spot, Nick Rosatti and Daniel Swilley were in their own battle for third. Hahira, Georgia's Rosatti crossed the finish line just ahead of Daniel Swilley, 19:14 to 19:15. Swilley, a senior on the Lowndes High cross country team, could take comfort in the fact that he finished ahead of Quin McGlamery, a junior on rival Valdosta High's cross country squad. McGlamery was fifth in 19:25. David Monds of Quitman, Georgia was the first master runner in the race, placing sixth overall in 20:42.

Valdosta master runner Debbie Green took the women's title in the 5K, coming in coming in eleventh overall in 23:04. Kelly Davis of Valdosta was second in the women's standings and fifteenth overall in 24:13. Hahira master runner Jodi Van Jura (16th, 24:19), just ahead of the fourth woman, Brandy Heruska Van Jura (17th, 24:22) of Hahira.

96 athletes finished the 2016 Barnes Healthcare 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.

One last win in 2015 for Martinez and Green

Michael MartinezMaster runners Michael Martinez and Debbie Green wrapped up the old year with wins at the New Year's Eve 5K in Valdosta, Georgia, on Thursday evening, 31 December 2015. Tallahassee's Martinez was the overall winner in 18:01 while Valdosta's Green took the women's title, placing seventh overall in 22:59.

The fourth annual race took place at Lowndes High School, two laps around a loop of the campus. After the first lap Michael Martinez trailed Andrew Elam and Quin McGlamery. Elam was the 2014 champion of the race and the course record holder. McGlamery, a sophomore on the Valdosta High cross country team, had also run the New Year's Eve 5K the previous year, placing ninth. Martinez was running the race for the first time, but his lack of experience didn't show. On the second lap Martinez left Elam and McGlamery behind--almost 200 meters behind. Martinez won the race in 18:01, and Elam edged McGlamery 18:38 to 18:41 for second. Valdosta Master runner Rick Mazurkiewicz was fourth in 20:49.

Debbie Green has run all four of Valdosta's New Year's Eve 5K races, collecting a second place in the women's standings in 2012, a third place in 2013, and a fourth place in 2014. In 2015 she completed the set, finishing first on the women's side in 22:59. Lauren Bewley of Valdosta was the women's runner-up, placing twelfth overall in 23:47. Valdosta master runner Martha Mazurkiewicz was the third woman finisher, thirteenth overall in 24:40.

61 athletes finished the fourth annual New Year's Eve 5K, a production of A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia.

Green and Green put the "fast" in "fast food" at Valdosta's Chik-Fil-A 5K

When the Chik-Fil-A race series came to Valdosta, Georgia, on Saturday morning, 19 January 2015, it was an alumnus of the Lowndes High cross country squad who won the 5K race. Former harrier Jackson Green posted a 19:07 for the 3.1-mile run on the north side of Valdosta, finishing more than 250 meters ahead of the next runner. Valodsta's Rick Mazurkiewicz was the top master runner in the race, placing second overall in 20:12. Peter MacDonough took third in 20:22.

Valdosta master runner Debbie Green was the first woman in the 5K, coming in fourteenth overall in 22:34. Coffee Middle School seventh-grader Gracie Woods was second in the women's standings, sixteenth overall in 23:33. 21sr overall in 24:15, Valdosta's Martha Mazurkiewicz was the third female finisher and second woman master.

137 athletes finished the 5K, which started and finished at Crossroads Baptist Church. The race was run on Valdosta's only USATF-certified course, assuring the runners that their times could be legitimately compared with performances on other certified courses. In days gone by, distances in road racing were treated rather casually. During the 1930s seven-time Boston Marathon winner Clarence Demar observed that a ten-mile road race might actually be anywhere from six to twelve miles long. Decades later Ted Corbitt formulated a procedure for measuring road-race courses; events that used his method could apply to have their courses certified. No method of measurement is perfect, and you can argue that a USATF-certified 10K course isn't actually ten kilometers long. However, such a course is the same length as any other ten-kilometer course measured by the same method, or at least close enough to allow comparison of performances.

Proceeds from the Chick-Fil-A Race Series Valdosta 5K benefited the Georgia Sheriffs' Boys Ranch. The Valdosta race was the last on the series schedule for 2015, which had included 32 events in eleven different states.

Kelly and Green win one for Viking cross country

Lowndes High School VikingsAsk anyone who has directed a road race, and they'll probably tell you that it's very near the bottom of the list of effective ways to raise money. Nevertheless, just about every weekend someone is holding a race--usually a 5K--to get money for their favorite cause. Whether it's corrective lenses for cross-eyed kittens, missions to Bolivia for the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, or helmet stickers for the Hazzard County High football team, there has probably been a benefit 5K for it. Sometimes, though, there's actually a race held by people who love running where the proceeds go to support the sport of running. Such an event was the Lowndes High School Cross Country's Fundraiser 5K, held Saturday morning, 12 December 2015, at Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Georgia.

Valdosta High cross country coach Ryan Kelly won the 3.1-mile race, covering the two-loop course around the Lowndes High campus in 18:39. Valdosta distance runner Jeremy Storey was the fastest master runner in the 5K, finishing second overall in 20:08. Nathan Storey, a sophomore on the Lowndes High cross country team, was third in 20:46.

Valdosta master runner Debbie Green took the women's title in the race, placing sixth overall in 22:28. Pavo master runner Polly Anna Bass was second in the women's standings, coming in sixteenth overall in 25:41. The third female finisher was Valdosta master runner Lisa Graves, eighteenth overall in 27:38.

40 athletes finished Lowndes High School Cross Country's 2015 Fundraiser 5K. Timing and finish line services were provided by A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia.

Bonilla and Green keep 'em flying in Valdosta

USA Flags2015 marked the tenth straight year of Independence Day racing in the streets of Valdosta, Georgia. The first three years, 2006 through 2008, the morning of July 4 was the occasion for the Baytree 8K, reminiscent of the slightly longer and somewhat larger Peachtree 10K in Atlanta. Starting on 4 July 2009 the Baytree 8K was replaced by the Valdosta 5K, which athletes have raced annually ever since.

Jesup, Georgia, master runner Roberto Bonilla won Valdosta's seventh Independence Day 5K on Saturday morning, 4 July 2015, running a fast 16:36 and finishing nearly 100 meters ahead of his nearest challenger. Another master runner--Joseph Carnegie III of Ocala, Florida--took the runner-up spot with a 17:05. Two Lowndes High distance runner battled for third, with rising senior Chance Roe edging out rising junior Kaleb Wolfenden 17:20 to 17:22. Fifth went to Valdosta High sophomore Matthew Baun in 17:36. Lowndes High rising sophomore Elijah Boyd outfought Valdosta State University distance runner Josh Hall for sixth, 17:57 to 17:59.

Valdosta master runner Debbie Green took the women's title, crossing the finish line with a 350-meter lead over the rest of the women's field. Green was 21st overall with a time of 22:26. Amber Elam of Valdosta was second in the women's standings, coming in 25th overall in 24:09. Valdosta master runner Martha Mazurkiewicz captured the third women's spot, placing 26th overall in 24:27. Josie Mazurkiewicz, who performed the National Anthem before the race started, was the fourth female finisher, 36th overall in 25:19.

128 athletes finished the 2015 Valdosta Independence Day 5K. The race was produced, timed, and scored by A Course / Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia.

Kelly and Green lead the charge at Valdosta's Memorial Day 5K

Memorial DayRyan Kelly ran 18:05 to finish first in a field of 87 athletes at Valdosta, Georgia's fifth annual Memorial Day 5K on 27 May 2013. It was just two days after Kelly's win in the Thank A Farmworker 5K, and his fourth road win since 11 May 2013. Behind Kelly, St John School distance runner Matthew Baun finished runner-up in 19:12. Lowndes High runner Chance Roe edged out Liam Bickerstaff for third, 19:47 to 19:51. Tom Phillips was the fastest master runner in the Memorial Day race, finishing fifth overall in 20:45.

Debbie Green of Valdosta, Georgia was the first female finisher as well as the first female master runner, coming in 18th overall in 23:21. In contrast to Kelly's big lead in the male competition, though, the next three women finished within half a minute of Green--'Dosta Dash 10K champion Melissa Roe (19th, 23:37), Valdosta master runner Angel Godwin (20th, 23:44), and Road Kill 5K winner Eryn Wilkey (21st, 23:51).

Unlike the previous year when tropical system Beryl was threatening the region, runners were greeted with clear skies and temperatures in the 70s. Improved weather no doubt helped lead to improved participation, as 87 runners finished this year's edition of the race.
