Driver and Floyd hit the trail on Independence Day

The Larry and Rona Dykes Trail in Westgate Park is the go-to venue for racing in Dothan, Alabama. Not only are there dozens of regularly scheduled events on the trail, but the Dothan Runners readily find occasions to hold yet another race in Westgate. Valentine's Day was on a Saturday in 2015? That's reason enough to organize the 'Stache Dash 5K Trail Run. Independence Day also falls on a Saturday? The Dothan Runners Club took advantage of that and scheduled the Firecracker 5K Trail Run for 4 July 2015.


The Westgate Park Trail also gets used for high school cross country meets, and the top two places in the Firecracker 5K went to a pair of Straughn High cross country runners, Johnathan Driver and Samuel Driver. Johnathan Driver, a rising senior who also throws the discus during track season, narrowly edged out frosh Samuel Driver for the win, 21:09 to 21:10. Bainbridge, Georgia, Grace Christian Academy 2015 graduate Austin Lambert took third behind the two Drivers in 21:57. David Allegood was the top master runner in the race, finishing fourth in 23:16.


Finishing 400 meters ahead of the rest of the women's field, Kimberly Floyd captured the women's crown in the Firecracker Trail Race, placing ninth overall in 26:00. Kristi Holland was runner-up for the women, coming in 13th overall in 28:22. Placing 14th overall, Chris Fox outkicked Cassie Logan 28:48 to 28:49 for third in the women's standing and the top woman master's spot.


42 athletes finished the 2015 Firecracker 5K Trail Race.
