Holguin and Garcia star in Panama City Beach's Firecracker 5K

Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot road races have become a cliché of athletics. If you're looking for a town without a Turkey Trot, start by looking for a town without a November road race.

If any event name is going to give "Turkey Trot" a run for the money, it's "Firecracker." Every since the Revolution, Independence Day has been a traditional date for athletic events. A good number of them are named "Firecracker." There's more than one Firecracker 5K, Firecracker 10K, and Firecracker 10-Mile. I don't know of a Firecracker Marathon but I wouldn't be surprised to learn that one exists. Panama City Beach, Florida, entered the Firecracker club on Saturday morning, 4 July 2015, with its inaugural Firecracker 5K in Frank Brown Park.

Gabe Holguin, a former trackman at Bay High and at Winthrop University, won Panama City Beach's first Firecracker 5K, running 16:45. Mitchell Shelton was runner-up in 17:04 and Brian Vincent took third in 18:36. Panama City Beach triathlete and master runner David Shearon was fourth in 18:48. Claudia Garcia was the first female finisher, 11th overall in 21:47. Tracie Hough was second in the women's standings, 16th overall in 23:21.

The Panama City Beach Firecracker 5K was organized by Road Race Consultants, LLC.
