Top honors for the women went to Nicole Kump of Valdosta, who ran 24:16 for the win, finishing eighth overall. Nearly 120 meters behind Kump was Jared Komatz of Hahira, Georgia, the women's runner-up, crossing the line tenth overall in 24:51. Homerville's Cathy Helms was the third woman in and the top master woman, 14th overall in 16:10.
The Break Bread Bun Run 5K was hosted by the First Presbyterian Church of Valdosta. The race started and finished in the parking lot of the Valdosta YMCA and toured the Wood Valley subdivision, described by VSU cross-country coach Todd Smoot as "the hilliest neighborhood in the Valdosta area." By the 8:00am race time, temperatures had already nearly reached 80 °F with a relative humidity of about 90%. I'm not sure what sort of heat index can be computed from that, but I'm sure that the answer is depressing. Kudos to everyone who left behind a soft bed and air conditioning to test themselves on the roads.
