Sandra Griffin finishes first in the Fall Four

Quitman, Georgia Four Seasons Four Miler SeriesThe race in Quitman, Georgia on Saturday morning, 19 November 2016, was Sandra Griffin's first Four Seasons Four Mile. Being a newcomer was no handicap, though, as Griffin won the Fall Four Mile in 29:05--the fastest time yet by a woman in the Four Seasons series. Quitman master runner David Monds was the overall male winner in 29:18, his third men's title at a Four Seasons race. 25 athletes finished the four mile course.

It was the fourth Four Seasons race for David Monds, who has run every race in the series. That was also the case for Thomasville, Georgia's Gareth Pyle. Pyle was third overall in the Fall Four Mile, at 29:39 the second male finisher. Boston, Georgia master runner Wendy Owens was the women's runner-up and fourth overall in 31:38. The next two places went to two more master runners, with Warren Williford of Grove Town, Georgia fifth in 33:57 and Scott Routsong of Valdosta, Georgia sixth in 34:03. Lauren Will of Tallahassee, Florida took the third women's spot, placing seventh overall in 36:09. Will was the women's champ at the preceding race in the series, the Summer Four Mile.

A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia timed the race and provided finish line services. The Four Seasons Four Mile series is scheduled to be back in 2017, starting with the Winter Four Mile on Saturday morning, 25 February 2017.

Monds and Graves win Quitman's first Winter Four

FourFour-mile races aren't unheard of in distance running. In Valdosta, Georgia the annual Four-Mile Run For Missions goes back to 2012. In Tallahassee, Florida the first Springtime Road Race in 1976 was a four-mile run. Daytona Beach, Florida's annual Easter Beach Run has been a four miler since 1968, nearly half a century.

The Quitman, Georgia Four Seasons Four Mile tries to go those events one better by being a quarterly race--four times a year instead of one. It's all about the number four.

Quitman master runner David Monds won the first Four Seasons race on Saturday morning, 27 February 2016--the Winter Four Mile. Monds covered the 6437 meter course in 29:07, finishing more than 160 meters ahead of the next runner. Thomasville, Georgia's Gareth Pyle took second in 29:53. Master runner Warren Williford of Grovetown, Georgia was third in 33:19.

On the women's side, Valdosta master runner Lisa Graves took the top spot, finishing fifth overall in 37:52. Amy Reese, another Valdosta master runner, was second in the women's standings, placing eighth overall in 39:28. Quitman's LeAnna Pledger was the third female finisher, coming in ninth overall in 41:16.

36 athletes finished Quitman's first Four Seasons Four Mile. Many "first annual" races never see a second event, and quarterly races are iffy as well. Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare started a quarterly series of 5K races in 2015, but ended up canceling the summer run. If all goes well for Quitman, though, the Spring Four Mile will be on 14 May 2016, the summer four mile on 6 August 2016, and the autumn four mile on 19 November 2016.
