Cox and Rosen conquer Springtime

Stephen CoxForty years. In five different decades and two different centuries, Gulf Winds Track Club's annual Springtime Road Race has been run forty times, changing courses, names, and even distances across the years. The very first of those forty runs was a four mile race. Ever since then, though, the featured distance was ten kilometers, as it was at the most recent Springtime on Saturday morning, 28 March 2015. Maclay School assistant cross-country coach Stephen Cox won that latest Springtime 10K, covering the 6.2 miles in 32:59. Sheryl Rosen, a Tallahassee lawyer, won the women's title, placing seventh overall in 37:30.

The 986 athletes who finished the Springtime 10K plus another 709 who completed the Springtime 5K started their run from in front of the Leon County Courthouse, heading north on Monroe Street. After a steep dash downhill on East Call Street, Chris Lake was leading the field as the runners chugged toward the mile mark on Franklin Boulevard. Lake was a three-time Springtime 10K champion, having won the race in 2010, 2011, and 2012. Stephen Cox only trailed Lake by a few seconds though, while Nate Kaiser and Jack Redwing dueled for third place a little farther back.

Chris Lake
Kaiser and Redwing faded from the picture as the runners climbed up into the hills of the Myers Park neighborhood, but Cox was starting to close on Lake. Before the race was halfway over Cox had pulled even with Lake; both runners reached 5K in 16:33. During the fourth mile Cox moved into the lead, opening a gap on Lake. It was never a huge margin, but Cox was out front to stay. He reached the finish line on Suwannee Street in 32:59, winning the race. A few seconds later, Lake crossed the line second in 33:10. After falling well behind Nate Kaiser in the middle of the race, Jack Redwing caught Kaiser just before the finish to take third, 34:07 to 34:20. Triathlete Charlie Johnson placed fifth in 34:20. Maclay School cross-country coach Gary Droze was the fastest master runner in the race, coming in sixth overall in 35:53.

"So how many of these have you won?" I asked Sheryl Rosen, the women's champion.

Sheryl Rosen"This sounds terrible, but I really don't know," apologized Rosen.

As it turns out, Rosen had won the Springtime 10K once before in 2010. Her confusion is understandable, though, because Rosen wins a lot of races. Rosen has won the women's division in every race she's entered in 2015 with the sole exception of the Gate River Run 15K in Jacksonville, Florida--the USATF national championship at that distance. In the Springtime 10K, Rosen led the women's field nearly from wire to wire, winning by over 200 meters in 37:30. Lauren Poulos was the women's runner-up, finishing 12th overall in 38:19. Katie Sherron was third in the women's standings, coming in 18th overall in 39:40. Stephanie Liles-Weyant was the fourth female finisher and first woman master, 26th overall in 40:32.
