Lake owns Springtime, makes it three wins in a row

Nicholas Maedel, Chris Lake, and Stephen CoxBecause of the construction in and around the Capital Cascades Greenway, there have been three different courses in the past three years for Gulf Winds Track Club's annual Springtime 10K, including a new route for the 37th annual race last Saturday, March 31. One thing has remained constant for the Tallahassee 10K through those three years, though. Chris Lake keeps winning. The University of Florida medical student took a break from studying for his Monday exams to score his third straight Springtime 10K win, running 33:29. "I wouldn't have missed this race," wrote Lake.

Nicholas Maedel, Chris Lake, and Stephen CoxThe 2012 course change had the runners starting from downtown going south on Monroe Street instead of north as in previous years. Chris Lake and Nicholas Maedel led 900 10K runners plus another 800 5K runners through the first mile in 4:56. Just off their pace, Stephen Cox shadowed the pair in 5:00. Cox closed with the leaders during the second mile and for a short while the three leaders ran as a group through the streets of Myers Park. But early in the third mile Lake opened a gap on Maedel and Cox. Cox broke away from Maedel to give chase, but by the halfway point of the 6.2-mile race Lake had slammed the door shut on the field. Lake's lead only got longer during the last three miles of the race. 33:25 after leaving downtown, Lake arrived at the finish line in front of the Florida Department of Transportation's Haydon Burns Building to claim the title. Cox finished runner-up with a 34:18, followed by Maedel in third place with a 34:33 and Nate Kaiser in fourth at 34:39. Maclay School track coach Gary Droze was the fastest master in the race, placing fifth overall in 35:57.

Lindsay Zeiler and Sheryl RosenIf Lake leads a busy life, so does Lindsay Zeiler of Capital City Runners. An FSU grad student and assistant track coach, Zeiler had been coaching at a track meet at the University of North Florida the day before the Springtime 10K, returning to Tallahassee at 2:00 am Saturday morning, just six hours before the start of the race. 2010 Springtime 10K women's champion Sheryl Rosen led the ladies past the mile mark, but Zeiler was just off her right shoulder. Zeiler passed Rosen during the second mile, then built up a lead of over 100 meters by the halfway point. At the finish line Zeiler was over a minute ahead of Rosen, winning the women's division 37:33 to 38:35. Behind Rosen, Katie Showman ran 40:30 to finish third among the women, and at 40:47 Micah Adriani was the fourth woman in. Thomasville's Mary Anne Grayson took the women's master title with a 42:40.

Lisa JohnsonIt wasn't Lake's three in a row, but in the 5K Lisa Johnson was starting on her own streak. In 2011 the Tallahassee schoolteacher had won the Springtime 5K outright, beating both women and men. This year she successfully defended her overall title in the shorter race, running 18:24 and finishing nearly 200 meters ahead of the next runner. The runner-up and top male in the race was David Witman, who crossed the line in 19:02. The fastest male master in the 5K was Crawfordville's Duane Evans, eighth overall in 20:31. Tallahassee's Kory Skrob captured female master honors with a 24:36 effort.

  1. 1700 runners? Holy Moly!!! It was a great day out there -- the course changes packed quite a hilly wallop and for those of us near the end those funky little lightning bolts off in the distance near the end gave an added little bit of fun (!). Great writeup as always, Herb - I didn't even see you out there taking pictures so no observant award for me!! Or medal ... you know they'll give those out for anything these days (just to let you know we do read your articles!!!).

  2. You really get around a race course Herb. I noticed 4 or 5 different race locations in your pics.

  3. I actually took pictures at six different places, but the 2012 course was so winding that I didn't have to travel very far to do it. And unlike the runners, I never went back up Capitol Hill.

    Herb.

  4. Paula,

1,700 is just an approximate number of finishers out of the folks who started out at 8:10am in the 10K and 5K, and doesn't even include the horde that left downtown earlier in the kiddie mile. Once you include them, I don't know what the total would be, but it's a lot of runners to have all at one time in downtown Tallahassee.

I haven't had anyone accost me on the street and hurl their finisher's medals in my face. I'm not sure what that means, though. Theories include that the article was well received, that few people read it, or that I'm not out on the street much.

    Herb.

  5. I've finally looked at all the pics & read the blog, Herb!

Since I don't really get to see much of anything except the start, it is so exciting to me to be able to read how the race unfolds.

I had to laugh when I read your article (& Paula's comments) about medals. The first year we directed this race, we did away with the medals...it was the ONLY thing for which we were excoriated, over & over again!

Thank you for the marvelous pictorial account & fabulous blog, Herb. You are appreciated!

    Congrats on another successful Palace!
