Michael Rosato and Lisa Johnson make it a Gainesville sweep of the Race The Tortoise 5K

Gainesville, Florida triathlete Michael Rosato went 17:30 for 3.1 miles in O'Leno State Park on Saturday morning, 5 March 2022, winning the twelfth annual Race The Tortoise 5K. Finishing second overall behind Rosato, master runner Lisa Johnson took the women's title with a 20:00.


In a showdown of two athletes from High Springs, Florida, Timothy Guinn edged Soren Brockdorf for the second spot in the men's standings, 21:05 to 21:08. The two runners were third and fourth overall, and Brockdorf was the first male master.


In another close finish, master runner Rahn Huffstutler crossed the finish line fifth overall, just ahead of Mandy Harrell; both runners were clocked at 21:236. Harrell was second in the women's division. Third place on the women's side went to Tierra Dozier, tenth overall in 24:28. Thirteen-year-old Abbey Robinson was the fourth female finisher and thirteenth overall in 24:46. A seventh-grader, Robinson raced for the Ocala Distance Project during the 2021 cross-country season.


203 athletes finished the 2022 Race The Tortoise 5K. Start 2 Finish Race Management timed and scored the race.

Brad Busboom and Lisa Johnson launch the 10K at the Trent

The Trent isn’t a new event. It was first run in 2009 at Roberts Elementary School, northeast of Tallahassee, Florida. But on a chilly Saturday morning, 26 January 2019, the event got a new name and a new race. It also got a new champion when Brad Busboom won the 10K at the tenth annual Trent, covering the new 6.2-mile course in 37:37. Lisa Johnson was the first woman in the race, coming in fifth overall in 40:07.

Shortly after the 8:30 AM start at Roberts Elementary, Myles Gibson, a Donalsonville, Georgia master runner, was leading the 10K. A mile into the race Gibson was still in front as the athletes galloped through the Dublin Downs community, but three Tallahassee men were just a few steps behind him--master runner Tony Guillen, Corey Osgood, and Brad Busboom.

Busboom didn’t stay behind. On the hilly roads of Dublin Downs he took command of the race, ultimately building up a lead of more than a hundred meters. When Busboom crossed the finish line back at the school in a winning 37:37, Gibson and Osgood were still in a fight for second. Their battle went to the final meter of the 10,000-meter race, where Osgood barely beat Gibson, both runners clocked in 38:04. A few seconds later, Guillen finished fourth in 38:19.

From first place to fourth, the top men were spread out over less than 200 meters. The women’s competition wasn’t that close; Lisa Johnson never had to look back. Leading from wire to wire, Johnson was more than a thousand meters ahead of the next woman in the 10K when she crossed the finish line in 40:07. Cecilia Bouaichi was runner-up in the women's standings, placing eleventh overall in 45:01. Nikky Manausa was the third woman and twelfth overall in 45:20. Sarah Samford was the first woman master and ninth female finisher, 28th overall in 51:18.

Lisa Johnson was also the first woman at the Trent in 2014, back when it was called the Red Fox Trot. Corey Osgood had been the overall winner in 2018, by which time the race was called the Trent Trot. Both of those years, as in each of the first nine editions of the race, the distance had been 5K. The 10K was added in 2019 when the event shortened its name to the Trent, but there was still a 5K race at the tenth annual Trent, run concurrently with the longer race.

The two races were also on the same course in the early going. Zach DeVeau, the 5K leader, ran with the fastest 10K runners for the first two kilometers, with master runner Michael Martinez following closely. DeVeau broke contact with Martinez during the second half of the race, going on to win the 5K in 18:25. Martinez took second in 19:01. Jackson Rowe, a seventh-grader on the cross-country team at nearly Montford Middle School, placed third in 19:50.

Kate Chunka was the top woman in the 5K, placing eleventh overall in 23:09. Sixth-grader Sophia Youngberg, another Montford cross-country runner, was second in the women's standings and thirteenth overall in 23:18. Rasheda Brumfield was the first woman master and third female finisher in the 5K, fourteenth overall in 23:24.


123 athletes finished the inaugural 10K at the 2019 Trent, and another 229 completed the 5K. 239 finished a one-mile fun run. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed all three races.

Lin's and Adriani's fast shoes prevail at Red Shoe

At the third annual Red Shoes Run, the only way Reikan Lin could beat Tony Guillen was by running his best 10K ever. So Lin did just that, posting a 36:52 to win the 19 April 2014 race through Tallahassee's Southwood community.


"It was a freaky race," said Lin. "My PR before was 38:18 and I ran 36:52."


Master runner Guillen finished runner-up in 37:07. Micah Adriani took the women's title, placing third overall in 41:05. Jennifer Shafer was the first woman master, 17th overall in 47:11.


It was a gray and sunless Saturday morning in Southwood for the race. Even though an overnight rain had stopped, a cold mist still hung in the air. The weather didn't prevent over 500 athletes from showing up in Southwood that morning, though. After an 8:00 AM one-mile fun run was over, the 10K and a 5K started at 8:30 AM on Esplanade Way. By a mile into the race Tony Guillen was leading the 10K field, with Reikan Lin six seconds back. Guillen widened that lead during the first half of the race, getting as much as 20 seconds ahead. During the second half, though, Lin started to close the gap. On Schoolhouse Road, with about a mile and a half to go, Lin had pulled to within seven seconds. He realized that he had a chance of catching Guillen.


On Grove Park Drive with less than a mile left in the race, Reikan Lin passed Tony Guillen. Driving for home, Lin pulled away. Back on Esplanade Way he crossed the finish line first in 36:52, a Red Shoe Run record. Guillen followed in 37:07, the first master runner. The next male across the line was Wakulla High junior Travis Parks, fifth overall in 41:40.


The top women preceded Parks, though. Early in the race, Micah Adriani, Jillian Heddaeus, and Renee Cox shared the lead in the women's competition. During the second half of the 10K Adriani pulled away. Cox was left far behind, but Heddaeus managed to stay within shouting distance. Literally shouting distance, as it turned out.


"I wasn't sure where to go," recalled Adriani. "I had to call back to Jillian and ask, 'Which way?'"


The two athletes managed to find their way to the finish line, Adriani in 41:06 and Heddaeus next in 41:15. Renee Cox was the third woman finisher, sixth overall in 42:35.

In the 5K Crawfordville master runner Duane Evans set the early pace. Late in the first mile, Tallahassee's Thomas Parker passed Evans, going on to win the 3.1-mile race in 19:14. Behind Parker, Lisa Johnson and Adriana Piekarewicz dueled for the women's title. The two ran side by side during the first half of the race. In the second half, Johnson, who had won the Red Shoe Run 5K in 2012, left Piekarewicz behind. Johnson finished second overall in 19:20, the top woman in the race. Piekarewicz was third overall in 19:28. Placing fourth overall in 19:54, Duane Evans was the first master in the 5K.

Moore wins and Johnson sets record at Education For Life 5K

There was no shortage of distance running on Florida State University's Tallahassee campus on Saturday morning, 22 March 2014. With the sun still low in the sky a pistol fired at the Mike Long Track, signaling the start of the first of six consolation sections in the FSU Relays 3200 meter run. Shortly after the gun went off, the campus carillon chimed 8:00, proof that the starter had begun the race a bit ahead of schedule. Moments later, the fifth annual Education For Life 5K started on West Call Street, just north of the track.


About 700 meters into the Education For Life 5K, Mickey Moore moved into the lead. The Tallahassee master runner is closely connected to the race; Moore is president of the Southern Scholarship Foundation, which puts on the Education For Life 5K each year. If you didn't know this, though, you might have guessed it from the cheering sections of scholarship house residents, each of which seemed to know Moore by name.

By the two-kilometer mark, Moore's lead looked insurmountable. Roberts Elementary schoolteacher Lisa Johnson, the women's leader, had moved into second behind Moore. Closely tailing Johnson, former Orlando Olympia High School distance runner Justin Zagra held third, while Aaron Taylor and Gary Galvez fought for fourth further back.


With a kilometer to go, Mickey Moore and Lisa Johnson still held the first two spots. Aaron Taylor had moved up to third, leaving Michael LaBossiere, Gary Galvez, and Micah Adriani to contest fourth. Zagra, fading, had slipped to seventh.


Mickey Moore had run the Education For Life 5K twice before, placing second in 2010 and third in 2012. This was his first time winning the race, though, as he crossed the finish line first in 18:12. Lisa Johnson took the women's title, coming in second overall and setting an Education For Life women's record of 19:26. Aaron Taylor was third in 19:38, with Michael LaBossiere fourth in 19:42, and Gary Galvez fifth in 19:48. Micah Adriani was the women's runner-up, sixth overall in 19:50. Third in the women's standings, Megan Giovanniello charged home to steal seventh from Justin Zagra, both runners clocked in 20:20. Giovanniello previously raced in Tallahassee on 9 November 2013, when she ran for Cape Coral's Baker High at the FHSAA State Cross-Country Finals.


Tallahassee's Paula O'Neill was the fastest female master in the race, coming in 13th overall in 22:13. 161 athletes finished the 2014 Education For Life 5K.

Linton and Johnson have fast legs at Bowlegs 5K

No one had ever won Tallahassee's annual Bowlegs 5K three times in a row. No one, that is, until 18 January 2014, when Stanley Linton won the 30th edition of the race after Bowlegs wins in 2012 and 2013. Linton's 15:46 was the fastest winning time at the 3.1-mile race since 1997 when Gary Droze ran 15:45. Droze is also the Bowlegs record holder with a 15:33 performance in 1993. Michael Martinez was the fastest master runner in this year's race, finishing fifth overall in 17:51. Lisa Johnson won the women's title with a 19:18, good for 17th overall. Paula O'Neill was the top woman master, coming in 47th overall in 22:06.


Watching the front of the race you might be excused for thinking you were seeing the 2013 Bowlegs again. It was the same cool air, and the same course through Innovation Park. After half a mile it was the same two runners out in front of field, Stanley Linton and Vince Molosky. Just like in 2013, Linton left Molosky behind. It was a faster race this time, though, for both Linton and Molosky. Linton shaved 26 seconds off his 2013 time, breaking 16 minutes with a winning 15:46, while Molosky ran eight seconds faster than 2013 for a runner-up 16:39.



About the same time that Linton was breaking contact with Molosky, Zach DeVeau was passing Ryan Truchelut to take over third place. DeVeau was never able to challenge the leaders, but he remained in command of third, even after Truchelut was passed by Peter Kaus. Deveau finished third, posting a 17:26, while Kaus was fourth in 17:47. Tallahassee master runner Michael Martinez outkicked Truchelut to take fifth place, 17:51 to 17:53.


Like Linton, 2012 and 2013 Bowlegs women's champion Katie Sherron was on the starting line with a chance for a third straight title. Half a mile into the race, though, Tallahassee school teacher Lisa Johnson was leading the women's field, with Renee Cox and Katie Sherron well behind. Johnson continued to pull away throughout the race on her way to a 19:18 win. Cox was the second woman across the finish line, 28th overall in 20:04. Sherron was third in the women's standings, 33rd overall in 20:35. Nikky Manausa was fourth on the women's side, 38th overall in 21:18. Paula O'Neill was the fifth woman finisher and first woman master, 47th overall in 22:06.


168 athletes finished the race, which benefits the scholarship fund of the Faculty and Friends Club of Florida State University.

From 1985 to 1994 the Bowlegs 5K was run on the main campus of Florida State University, starting and finishing near Tully Gym, on USATF certified course FL88014BH. From 1995 to 2014 the Bowlegs 5K was run in Innovation Park, starting and finishing near the College of Engineering on USATF certified course FL95008DL. The course was later recertified with number FL12001EBM.

Tony Guillen and Renee Cox fly at the Swarm 10K

Running through the streets of Tallahassee's Southwood community, Tony Guillen successfully defended his title in the Conley Yellow Jacket Swarm 10K on Saturday morning, 2 November 2013. The Tallahassee master runner posted a 37:32 in the third annual 6.2-mile. Renee Cox placed first on the women's side, coming in fourth overall with a 42:47. Jennifer Shafer was the first woman master, placing 14th overall in 48:28.


The 10K started in front of Conley Elementary School on Four Oaks Boulevard. 43 athletes racing the 10K were joined on the starting line by another 71 competing in the 5K. The whole group was sent on their way just after 8:30 AM by official starter Mike Conley--not only the educator for whom the school is named, but also an athlete who earned a spot in the FSU Athletic Hall of Fame through his career as a miler. After that sendoff the runners headed south on Four Oaks. After a kilometer Tony Guillen was leading not only his competitors in the 10K, but also the runners in the shorter 5K. Half a minute back, Mike LaBossiere and Renee Cox led the pursuit, with Leyssa Helgeson a few steps behind them. Mark Tombrink followed Helgeson, and Reikan Lin trailed Tombrink.


Guillen continued to pull away. By halfway through the race he was too far ahead for the competition to see. Behind him, Reikan Lin moved up into second. LaBossiere and Cox continued to run together, holding down third and fourth. When Guillen crossed the finish line with a winning 37:32, his lead had grown to nearly 700 meters. Reikan Lin was runner-up in 40:14. LaBossiere pulled away from Cox late in the race to take third in 42:40. Cox, taking honors as the top woman in the race, was fourth in 42:47. Mark Tombrink was fifth in 45:19. Leyssa Helgeson was the second woman to finish, placing sixth overall in 45:31.

Jaryd Walton, a cross-country runner at Lincoln High School, took the lead in the Conley Yellow Jacket Swarm 5K about a kilometer into the 3.1-mile race. However, he couldn't shake Tallahassee schoolteacher Lisa Johnson. Johnson shadowed Walton until about halfway through the race, then she took charge. After that the race was hers. Johnson won in 19:11, not far off the 19:00 women's course record for the Swarm that she set in 2011. Crawfordville master runner Duane Evans was the first male finisher, placing second overall in 19:58. Walton was the third runner in, running 20:12.

Remy Tamer and Lisa Johnson succeed at Sundberg

On Saturday morning, 19 October 2013, Former University of North Carolina-Wilmington trackman Remy Tamer left the rest of a field of 139 runners far behind, winning the Alan C. Sundberg Memorial 5K by more than 600 meters. Leading from start to finish, Tamer ran 16:43 to win the 3.1 mile race through Maclay Gardens State Park in Tallahassee, Florida. Tallahassee runner Lisa Johnson was the first female finisher, coming in third overall in 19:23. Bing Xu was the first master runner in the race, fifth overall in 19:48. The fastest female master was Paula O'Neill, 18th overall in 22:48.


There are a variety of Tallahassee 5K races held in Maclay Gardens, including the Marzuq Mother's Day 5K and the Fallen Heroes 5K, each using the same course that starts and finishes in the Lake Hall recreation area. The Sundberg 5K wasn't the first race to be held in the Gardens, but it is the oldest event currently held there--the 2013 Sundberg was the 15th annual. When the run started just after 8:00 AM, fog shrouded Lake Hall. It was foggy all over the park, and indeed all over north Tallahassee. As the athletes moved through the mist, Remy Tamer bolted to the front. Jillian Heddaeus led the pursuit, with Lisa Johnson right behind her. Tamer stretched out his lead while Heddaeus and Johnson continued to spar for second. After two kilometers Johnson left Heddaeus behind. As Heddaeus fell back, Anthony Kuchera moved up, pulling even with Johnson. Running alone up front, Tamer crossed the finish line first in 16:43. Kuchera raced away from Johnson in the last 200 meters to take second in 19:16. Johnson was third in 19:23, the first female finisher. Reikan Lin was fourth in 19:41 and master runner Bing Xu was fifth in 19:48.


The race is held in memory of Maclay Gardens State Park employee Alan C. Sundberg, who died of melanoma in 1998. Aside from promoting skin cancer awareness, the event offers free post-race skin-cancer screenings. Chip timing and finish line services at the Sundberg 5K were provided by the Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee, Florida.

Kevin Sullivan is man of the season at the Springtime 10K

Three-time Canadian Olympian Kevin Sullivan dueled with Stanley Linton for nearly four miles before breaking away to win the featured 10K event of Gulf Winds Track Club's 38th annual Springtime Road Race. Sullivan took advantage of near-perfect running weather to put up a 31:45 for the 6.2-mile race. Stefanie Slekis was the first woman finisher in the field of close to a thousand athletes, running 36:05 and leading her competition from start to finish.


At 8:10 AM over 1,800 athletes lurched north on Monroe Street from in front of the Leon County Courthouse, including about 800 entries in the 5K. The crowd barreled downhill on East Call Street, then turned south onto the newly re-opened Franklin Boulevard. Alex Smyth led the runners as the race passed the mile mark, closely followed by Jonathan Campbell, Kevin Sullivan, and Stanley Linton. On Lafayette Street, though, Smyth took the 5K route while Sullivan, Campbell, and Linton turned into Myers Park to follow the 10K course. At two miles Sullivan led Campbell and Linton. During the third mile, Campbell fell off the pace and it was just Sullivan and Linton.


This was the second Springtime 10K for Kevin Sullivan, who raced wearing the colors of his athletics store, Capital City Runners. Two years earlier on the same course, Sullivan had finished second behind Chris Lake. Lake, though, despite his record of three straight Springtime wins, was over half a minute behind at the midpoint of this year's race. Any challenge to Sullivan in the second half of the race was going to come from Stanley Linton.


Linton had also run in the 2011 Springtime 10K, but not by design. Intending to run the 5K, he had accidentally followed the 10K runners into Myers Park and onto the longer course. There weren't going to be any wrong turns today, though. Linton had already won seven races in 2013 and was looking for win number eight.


Sullivan and Linton hit the 5K mark of the race together at 16:19, fast enough to win the open 5K race, but not as fast as they would run the second half of their race. Sullivan started to open a gap during the fourth mile, and by the opening of the fifth mile he had broken contact with Linton. Sullivan reached the finish line on Suwanee Street in 31:42, the fastest winning time at Springtime since 2003. Linton took second in 32:32, while University of West Florida cross-country coach Caleb Carmichael was third in 33:16. Jack Redwing outkicked Nate Kaiser for fourth, 34:00 to 34:01, while three-time defending champion Chris Lake placed sixth in 34:14. After hanging with the leaders for the first two miles, Jonathan Campbell faded to finish seventh in 34:28.


Stefanie Slekis made it a sweep for Capital City Runners in the Springtime 10K by taking the women's title. Running in her first Springtime Road Race, Slekis finished 11th overall in 36:05, over a minute ahead of the women's runner-up, Tallahassee lawyer Sheryl Rosen. Rosen, the 2010 Springtime 10K women's champion, was 18th in 37:11. Katie Showman, a Florida State University economics professor, placed third in the women's division, running 34th overall in 39:22.

While Linton and Sullivan were battling through the streets of Myers Park, Alex Smyth finished a winning effort in the 5K, running 16:48. Smyth ran almost a minute faster than runner-up Peter Van Brussel, who clocked 17:45 on the 3.1-mile course. Bainbridge High School distance runner Chase Harris placed third in 17:51. For the third straight year, Tallahassee's Lisa Johnson won the Springtime 5K women's title, finishing 13th overall in 19:24. At 21:37, Katherine Resavage of Holy Comforter Episcopal School was the second female finisher, and Ana Wallace of Deerlake Middle School was third in 21:47.
